AUTHOR

My name is Christian Reyes, I was born in Colombia and at the age of twelve I moved with my family to Puer to Rico. It was here where I decided to study architecture and the impor tance of design in our communities. This early change in my life has given me the ability to adapt easily to new conditions and environments. As a student, I am always looking for new challenges to demonstrate my abilities as a designer. To me, architecture should impact the lives of people through dynamic and livable spaces. These are some of the reasons I chose to become an architect.

DESIGN COMPETITION

Without a Trace

A Building Technology and Sustainable Design Competition

August 2013 - October 2013

First place in design competition organized by the Pontifical Catholic University of Puer to Rico. The goal of the competition was to design a small ecohouse in the mountains of central Puer to Rico. Among the jury was puer torican architect Fernando AbruĂąa and american architect Peter Gluck.

Description The mid-rise, mix-use building, is located in the urban historic district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The site for this project presented a particular location; to the west, the city displayed an open city, a large scale and a program that accommodates itself to one of the main tourists areas of the capital. On the other hand, it presented one of the largest single-family housing areas of the town.

The opportunity to create a flexible and changeable building emerges directly from the natural organization of the city. West oriented open terraces, placed in different levels of the building, allow cross ventilation and responds directly to the city’s attributes. Cantilevered balconies create a compact and dense skin on the other side of the building, responding in the same way to the urban elements presented by the city. The building, as well as the city combines different attributes, but they both work as one integrated system, providing people with a dynamic environment to interact.

Description The LIGHT PAVILION, located in the "Plaza las Delicias" in Ponce, applies the concepts of compression and expansion to control the amount of light and ventilation inside, as well as to respond to the sorrounding urban conditions. located in the northwest corner of the square, this pavilion addresses the northern entry to the town by expanding in size and letting indirect light to come through.

Meanwhile, the compression was used to create a distinct interior space, thus allowing the visitors to experiment a different perception through the spatial sequence.

STRUCTURE TECTONIC WOOD Joints of traditional Japanese architecture were analyzed in order to gain deeper understanding on how wood structures behave. The three-way miter joint consists of three individual pieces: post, front and side. This type of joint, which dates to the Ming dynasty, is often used in furniture design. The goal for this project was to design a pavillion for the marketing and sale of products designed and built in the School of Architecture.

This pavilion is made up of four different modules, which can be stored in an 8’x8’ space. These four independent modules are able to separate, organize and collect depending on the conditions. Perforated strips connect these four pieces together, creating an interior exhibition space as well as producing a transparent transition between interior and exterior. Three of the modules control the access, the other one, exhibits physical models both inside and outside and can store many of the exhibitions materials. Wood, will be the main construction material for this project and the three-way miter joint will be used to create the modules.
