The CBU Forward Annual Fund touches every corner of our campus, from scholarships to social services for students. When you make a gift to CBU Forward, 100% of your donation goes to support students in every step of their journey as they Enter to Learn and Leave to Serve.
It didn’t take much catching up at the last Alumni Weekend to be reminded of how impacted we were by the service-oriented teachings of our Lasallian professors. Examining the staff and leadership of our local nonprofit and education institutions, you will find CBU alumni leading the causes that matter most for our community. They are supported by our peers in business through board leadership, sponsorships, mentoring, and community partnerships.
This community focus is not an accident, but the byproduct of the mission at Christian Brothers. Through their every day actions, the Brothers and their Lasallian teaching partners imbued in us a focus on community through the way they taught, sometimes without us even noticing..
St. John Baptist de La Salle wrote that “You can perform miracles by touching the hearts of those entrusted to your care.” Most of us reading this can probably recall a few moments like this at CBU. Although I didn’t enjoy a verbal lashing from the late Dr. Vincent O’Neill for a low-effort paper, he and his fellow educators also showed moments of care and support through life’s tough moments.
Our alumni have reminded me of the power of this community effect in the last couple of years. This community has increased support by showing up for campus events, by mentoring and recruiting through career services, and also through financial support of the vital mission of our Lasallian community.
Thank you for your part in this mission to make our East Parkway campus a place where those miracles continue to happen for a new generation of learners.
With gratitude,
Aaron Lamey National Alumni Board President
Thank you, Raegan!
After ten years of generous service, Raegan Cook is stepping down as President of the National Alumni Board. Throughout her tenure, she has overseen an increase in alumni participation, volunteer opportunities, and philanthropic engagement. Raegan helped facilitate the return of Alumni Trivia and the reinvention of Alumni Weekend, constantly working to provide high-quality events for our alumni. She is leaving office with the NAB in the strongest position we have seen in recent history. This is due largely in part to her leadership and her commitment. We thank her for her commitment to CBU!

ROOTED IN MISSION, FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE
CBU and Lewis University Sign Letter of Intent to Explore
Christian Brothers University (CBU) has always believed in providing a transformative education. That belief is at the heart of an announcement that marks the beginning of a thoughtful, forward-looking journey: CBU has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Lewis University, a fellow Lasallian institution based in Illinois, to explore the potential for a formal partnership.
This is the first step in a collaborative process that allows both institutions to assess how they might collaborate to expand academic opportunities, improve sustainability, and deepen their shared mission to serve students and communities.
“This process is about envisioning what’s possible at CBU — academically, financially, and in how we serve our students and city,” said Brother Chris Englert, FSC, Interim President of CBU. “By considering a partnership with Lewis, we’re taking a step toward a stronger, more sustainable future while remaining rooted in our faith in God and the Lasallian mission that has guided us for more than 150 years.”
CBU aims to bolster its position as a premier institution serving the greater Memphis region and beyond by aligning academic programs with workforce needs and adopting a financially sustainable model.
Explore Strategic Partnership
The Board of Trustees fully supports this careful evaluation process and remains focused on ensuring the best longterm outcome for CBU and its stakeholders. We believe this step holds great promise for CBU’s future, and we are committed to making thoughtful, missiondriven decisions every step of the way.
Emily Greer CBU Board of Trustees Chair
Mission-Driven Response to a Shifting Landscape
Like many institutions across the country, CBU continues to navigate a complex set of challenges. The lingering effects of the 2007 recession have led to a national decline in the college-age population, while post-pandemic enrollment trends remain unpredictable. Rising inflation is placing additional pressure on students and families, and uncertainties surrounding federal aid and international student recruitment add further complexity to the higher education landscape.
External pressures are certainly a factor; however, this is not just about reacting to them. It is about evolving intentionally while recognizing that tough decisions still lie ahead.
This new CBU would strengthen its ability to meet the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s leaders by:
• Offering new high-demand programs in aviation, business, engineering, healthcare, and technology
• Creating stronger pathways for commuters, adult learners, and transfer, international, traditional, and graduate students
• Growing online and hybrid course offerings to increase accessibility and flexibility for traditional and non-traditional students
• Extending the reach of both CBU and Lewis University into new markets through academic innovation
CBU Campus in Memphis, Tennessee
Why Lewis?
This partnership is meant to elevate both institutions’ ability to meet regional and national needs. Located in Romeoville, Illinois — 35 miles southwest of Chicago — Lewis University has grown significantly, serving nearly 8,000 students. With eighty undergraduate majors, over 35 graduate programs, and a shared Catholic and Lasallian mission, Lewis brings strong momentum and is an ideal fit.
“With Memphis being home to industry leaders in distribution, engineering, transportation, technology, and healthcare, this potential partnership allows us to explore new ways to meet regional needs,” said Dr. David Livingston, President of Lewis University. “By leveraging our complementary strengths, we believe there is potential to extend the impact of the Lasallian mission beyond what either of us could achieve alone.”
Any opportunity to amplify STEM education in the Digital Delta, including aviation and healthcare, is a major advantage for our city. It positions us to bring more to the table — helping local businesses grow, attracting new industries, supporting innovation, and unlocking new possibilities for our workforce and community.

What to Expect
No immediate changes to academic programs are planned, and we expect the upcoming school year to proceed as usual with our scheduled academic offerings. The LOI marks the first step in a careful, intentional, and shared process.
Both institutions will begin a comprehensive evaluation to explore opportunities, address challenges, and shape a future built on their combined strengths. Forums, listening sessions, and strategic planning will help determine the most beneficial path. This fall, a decision on whether to proceed with a full agreement is expected.
Christian Brothers University has been an essential partner in building Memphis’ workforce, producing talented graduates who fuel innovation and meet the needs of our local industries. As the demands of today’s economy continue to evolve, a stronger CBU will help ensure that Memphis remains competitive by developing the skilled professionals companies need and retaining top talent right here at home.

FROM CLASSROOM
TO TIMES SQUARE
CBU STUDENT ART GOES GLOBAL
Two Christian Brothers University seniors, Presley Broughton and Paulina Vidal, reached new creative heights when their graphic design work debuted on a 10,000-square-foot billboard in New York City’s Times Square on March 7, 2025. The project, developed through CBU’s partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchange Initiative, marked International Women’s Day with bold, student-designed visuals highlighting gender equality in corporate leadership.
Guided by Associate Professor Melinda Posey, the students embraced the challenge of designing for the curved façade of the NASDAQ building—an ambitious, real-world experience that pushed their creativity and strengthened their portfolios. This marks the fourth Times Square collaboration between Posey’s classes and the UN, reflecting CBU’s commitment to hands-on learning with global impact.

HOMECOMING
FEBRUARY 8, 2025
Buccaneers showed their amazing pride and spirit at the Homecoming Alumni Reception on Saturday, February 8. Everyone gathered at the Canale Arena Skybox for an opportunity to enjoy the best seats in the house while watching the game and catching up with good friends over delicious food.
Guests were treated to extra fun with a Pop-Up Bookstore filled with awesome Buccaneer merchandise. Local brews from Urban Consequence Brewing Company, owned by our very own faculty member Dr. Jeff Sable, added a special touch.
During halftime of the men’s game, we had a fantastic surprise: a special prize package sponsored by First South Financial Credit Union was awarded to our lucky winner, Jordan Michael (’09)!
We also celebrated an exciting milestone by awarding the first Donna Crone Athletic Excellence Scholarship during halftime of the women’s game. Congratulations to Chloe May, a freshman and dedicated soccer player!
We were thrilled to have Jack Terry from the Class of 1965 join us all the way from Idaho! It was his first trip back to campus in years. He felt he couldn’t miss it after receiving a lovely email invitation.
What a great day to be a Buccaneer!
In the meantime, check out the event photos—let’s continue building lifelong connections and Buccaneer memories!

Embracing the Call
by Brother Christian Camacho
Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.
Those are the words that are glued onto the doors from our residence halls to the business office. To the outsider, we reflect those values in what we teach in the classroom, but it means so much more. Our University has been around for 154 years and has opened its doors to students with a desire in their heart to gain a higher education. What some of them did not know is that they are being welcomed into a community that asks more of them; not just in ways that they can answer vocally, but through their actions.
When you walk across the stage to receive your diploma, you have just left an institution that has embedded a heart of service onto you whether you’ve noticed it or not. You made a PB&J sandwich for someone who uses St. Mary’s Kitchen in Downtown Memphis as their morning diner, or you helped refill the on-campus pantry with food for your classmates who are struggling with an insecurity that you may not even know about. When asked why you do this, you aren’t doing it for a reason other than you know it is the right thing to do. You echo the words of Brother Terence McLaughlin who accepted Jesse Turner Jr. in the Fall of 1963, It was the right thing to do.
In September of 2024, I joined 505 fellow Buccaneers in completing 505 hours of volunteer work. We were nervous during the planning stages but with the outpouring of support from our wonderful alumni, we felt that we could take on the world. On Saturday of that week, the Alumni cleaned around the Brothers’ house and took time to be in community with Brother Tom Sullivan, who to this day is still teaching at the young age of 80! “Your students are living images of Jesus”; those are the words of our founder who reminds us that as we give our hours of service to the current campus population, we are only reflecting the love and appreciation we received when we were in their shoes.
In my own college journey, I attended Lasalle University and was given the mustard seed of service for the poor on the first day. Seven years later, I sat in Campus Ministry on my first day with my supervisor, Joel Kelley, and prepared to give out mustard seeds as had been done for me. For the time that they are on our campus, we can help them lift up their cross just a little higher. As Alums come to our campus and volunteer, they show the students how to implement what they learned when they were students themselves; seeing Jesus in the eyes of each new person and upholding the Lasallian mission of “Leaving to Serve.”
He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Matthew 13:31-32
ABROAD ABROAD Kiaya Weaver
Psychology ’25
As I prepared to graduate, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad before finishing my undergraduate journey. I chose Costa Rica because my background in Spanish-language courses were a requirement for my major, and I wanted to continue building my skills while using the language in a realworld setting.
I wasn’t aware of many study abroad options at first, but thanks to one of my professors, I was introduced to Ashley Worthington, Assistant Director for International Initiatives, which sparked my journey. Costa Rica stood out to me not only because it was affordable, but also because it offered an internship component. As someone about to graduate, I wanted to gain as much hands-on experience as possible—and what better way than interning in a Spanish-speaking country?
My experience here has been incredible. The people are welcoming, the culture is rich, and I’ve grown both personally and professionally. I would highly recommend studying abroad to anyone—it’s an unforgettable opportunity to learn, grow, and explore.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATES
CBU Students Lead Powerful Celebration of Black History and Culture
CBU, in collaboration with the Black Student Association (BSA), proudly celebrated Black History Month with a full calendar of events honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans. Throughout February, students, faculty, staff, and alumni came together for a series of powerful programs, service projects, and celebrations designed to educate, inspire, and uplift the CBU community.
The month kicked off with the Black Brilliance Bash, a semi-formal cocktail-style event that brought students and distinguished alumni together in an elegant black-andgold setting, fostering connection, networking, and pride in Black excellence.
Service was a central theme throughout the month. BSA members visited Binghampton Christian Academy, spreading Valentine’s cheer and creating heartfelt cards with students. Additional service efforts included a hygiene product donation drive, care package assembly for the
homeless, and collaboration with Word Church to prepare donation packages for elderly community members.
The month concluded with a Celebration of Black Excellence, a powerful showcase of performances and artistic expressions that honored African American legacy and inspired reflection, joy, and unity.

FACULTY SP OTLIGHT Dr. Tracie Burke
“Sorry I’m so dressed up. I’m leaving for a wedding of two former students after this!”
Dr. Tracie Burke said as she breezed into our scheduled interview. This encapsulates Dr. Burke’s approach to teaching and her students perfectly. She is not just your professor for a semester but a cheerleader for the rest of your life. She is enthusiastically committed to every student’s growth as a scholar but also as an individual.
Dr. Burke became a Psychology professor full-time at CBU in 1997. She was drawn to CBU for its reputation of good teaching but has stayed for the past twentyeight years because of her colleagues and the students.
Even in light of the numerous accolades she has received, Distinguished Lasallian Educator in 2011 and Teaching Excellence Award Recipient in 2017 to name a few, one of her proudest accomplishments is Director of the Honors Programs from 2000 to 2020. Her passion lies in helping students become more successful in every area of their life. Whether it being equipping students with more financial knowledge through the creation of the “Life After College: Money Matters” speaker series or encouraging a love of Memphis, Dr. Burke is dedicated to expanding horizons however she can. She’s known for her motto of “just say yes,” encouraging students to try new things at every chance they get.
When asked about her time at CBU, she said with awe and sincerity, “I had no idea it would transform my life, the transition from teacher to mentor. What an impact it would have on me to help students develop their whole person.” She isn’t alone in her sincerity. The profound effect Dr. Burke had on her students was most felt during her Last Lecture presentation this past April. In a packed University Theater, alumni from across decades brought signs and cheered with an energy more akin to a pep rally than a final academic presentation.
Dr. Burke has led camping trips and organized month-long service programs. She officiated two weddings of former students and even convinced several faculty members to join a dance team for half-time entertainment at Basketball games all while teaching multiple courses. There are few hats she hasn’t worn on this campus.
As many of us are aware, the impact Dr. Burke has made is tremendous. She said during our time together, “There are so many students there will never be another of and I’m glad I was a part of their journey.” To borrow her words, there will never be another Dr. Tracie Burke and we are glad CBU was a part of her journey.
We wish her the best of luck in her retirement.
CBU SWEETHEARTSShip at the Shipped
Christian Brothers University is a campus where milestones happen. It’s where scholars discover their passion and learn the skills that will help them for generations after graduation.
It’s also been the first page of several love stories for our CBU Sweethearts.
It was 1987 and Valarie Bates was a Student Ambassador. She was tasked with welcoming the new students to campus and helping them settle into their new home at CBC. It was during Freshman Orientation that she met Bartholomew Orr. He remembers looking less than cool during this first meeting in his suspenders and with pens in his shirt pocket. It didn’t stop him though. With a confidence he still radiates today, he recalls thinking “I just met the girl I am going to marry.”
While Valarie didn’t walk away from Orientation with the same idea, they did become close friends almost immediately. They spent the majority of their time together studying in Plough Library. They fondly referred to the other as an academic rival, constantly comparing notes and test scores. Although competitive, Valarie and Bartholomew were committed to helping each other become the best students they could be.
I just met the girl I am going to marry.
When Bartholomew was only a sophomore, he was asked to become the Pastor of Brown Missionary Baptist Church in Southaven, MS. It was a significant undertaking for a nineteen-year-old to lead a congregation of sixty-six members but Bartholomew took it in stride, officially becoming Pastor Orr.
This led to Bartholomew deciding it was time. He was going to ask Valarie out on a date. The pair got dinner together on Valentine’s Day at Ruby Tuesday. There is some discussion to this day about how the date went but Valarie insisted that afterwards they remained good friends.
A few months later, Bartholomew told Valarie that she owed him another date. This second date went much better and the two were engaged in May and married in August of that year. Valarie graduated as a member of the last class of Christian Brothers College and the following spring, Bartholomew graduated a part of the first class of Christian Brothers University.
They are still pushing each other to be the best they can be. Brown Missionary Baptist has grown into one of the largest predominantly Black megachurches in the United States with over 12,000 members and two locations. They have four sons and eight grandchildren.
Dr. Margarette Sathers encouraged him by saying “Bart, follow your heart.” Whether that was switching his major from engineering or marrying Valerie, Pastor Orr did just that.
Sometimes CBU faculty get involved in the love story! Lindsey Barnes worked with Cale Alexander on a few projects in Dr. Hargett’s Statistics class when he decided to ask Lindsey out. He actually asked a few times. Lindsey always kindly declined until Dr. Hargett pulled her aside after class and said, “You should really give him a chance.”
Lindsey and Cale’s first date was at Huey’s in Midtown and they’ve been together ever since! They got married in 2017 and welcomed their first child, their son Nash, to their CBU family in 2024.
Bartholomew and Valarie aren’t the only study buddies turned sweethearts. Britany Brass met Andrew Ivory during Freshman Orientation in 2004. They became study partners when they both took Brother Walter’s Old Testament class and credit his course to the reason they got so close. They began dating in 2006.
Andrew graduated from CBU with a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting in 2009. After a short break, Britany graduated with a BBA in 2018. Andrew and Britany have been married since 2011 and have two children together. Britany says, “It has been a beautiful 19 years that I wouldn’t trade for the world!”
Olivia Dees and Logan Hale fell in love walking across campus together after late nights studying in the Honors Lounge and after attending Campus Ministry events. They were President’s Ambassadors together and spent a lot of time wearing matching polos. They grew together in their faiths and their leadership skills while students together. “CBU gave us more than degrees—it gave us a partnership built on shared values, friendship, and a whole lot of laughter. Now, we are married, and still each other’s favorite teammate!”
“When we were in college, there was a dance almost every weekend. Most were at CBU in the “Cove,” but the first dance my first semester at CBC was a street dance at Siena College. That is where I first saw, met, and danced with my future wife, Cathy! We weren’t too impressed with one another that night but as the semester passed we always ended up dancing together. We still dance together! After Easter break that year, I asked her to go “steady” with me and she accepted the offer. I proposed after sophomore year and we married after junior year. I had one semester to go and Cathy had a full year. We’ve been together over 50 years!”

ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED
by including in your estate plans.
As Eloise and I considered our legacy, we knew we wanted to make a lasting impact on a place that profoundly shaped our lives and continues to hold our hearts. For me, Christian Brothers University has always been more than an institution — it’s a community rooted in faith, learning, and service.
Your generosity will provide students with the resources they need to pursue their dreams of attending college and making an impact on the world around them.
