PROGRAM NOTES Beyond the notes themselves, the viola is an instrument inherently imbued with timbral colours. Like watercolours that flow onto a page, guided by the hand of the artist yet still retaining an element of chaotic freedom, I sough to allow those colours to flow through sound. Watercolours I was written for and commissioned by Jeremy Klein, and was premiered on the 23rd of May 2021.

PERFORMANCE NOTES A few things to keep in mind when playing this piece. There are obviously no barlines and therefore no pulse, one should to avoid establishing a steady definable tempo within reason. In regards to the rhythms notated, one is not expected to play them metronomically, rather they should be approached intuitively. Consider for example the nested tuplets on the second line of the second page; here I would encourage the player to conceptualise it as successive tempo changes, that is, the first 5-tuplet represents a momentary increase in tempo, followed by the triplet and another 5-tupled, both behaving in the same way. Note that I have also gone to some length to make sure that no single lengthy note is static, meaning either the timbre, pitch or dynamic is shifting over a period of time. This is particularly true in those passages that feature a lengthy glissando complemented with a fermata. In these cases, the fermata simply indicated am expansion of the glissando rather than remaining in stasis on the given note. I would also encourage a player to exaggerate everything, from dynamics to timbral differences (sul tasto vs. sul pont). Lastly, I was very conservative in my tempo markings to allow variations in tempo. One should aim to keep the music flowing throughout although the tempo can fluctuate to adapt to the level and length of reverb in the room. In a space with a longer reverb, a faster tempo could be used and vice versa.

NOTATION Fermata over a gliss, elongate the glissando, do not stop on the note. Gliss. finger lightly on top of the string to create the harmonics (‘seagull effect’) Repeat passage bisbigliando for the given length of time. Gradually move from sul tasto to sul pont. Short fall.
