Né en 1954 en Caroline du Sud, il grandit à Brooklyn et se passionne pour les sciences et la musique. La schizophrénie l’empêche néanmoins de poursuivre ses études et, à partir des années 1970, il alterne les séjours en institutions psychiatriques et en centres pour sans-abris. Et c’est dans l’un d’entre eux, sur Wards Island, que l’artiste Andrew Castrucci le découvre en 1989. Mais comme « toujours, imaginer sera plus grand que vivre » ainsi que l’écrivait Bachelard, Melvin se met à exprimer sa quête d’ailleurs par la création. C’est durant un long processus, pouvant s’étendre sur des mois, que Melvin recouvre des fragments de papiers d’écritures, de chiffres, de formules mathématiques et chimiques, de figures géométriques. Glissés dans un livre ou dans une poche, ces faux palimpsestes gardent les traces de tous ses repentirs, des moindres soubresauts de l’âme. Les notations de Melvin Way finissent par ressembler, comme le souligne Jay Gornay, « aux remarquables partitions de John Cage », mêlant pareillement composition fiévreuse et poétique du signe en une symphonie prodigieuse dont la musique s’entend avec les yeux.

Rares sont les œuvres qui, dans une vie de galeriste, offrent un tel potentiel d’ébranlement que les billets talismaniques de Melvin Way.

temps ; ses équations paraissent vouloir localiser les vortex, ces lieux de passage qui mènent de l’un à l’autre. Comme une manière - pour celui qui signe parfois Melvin « Milky » Way - de s’affranchir de sa condition terrestre. Car, comme le souligne Laurent Derobert à son sujet : “L’œuvre de Melvin Way de ceci est le plus bel enseignement : il s’agit moins de nous comprendre que de nous émerveiller”.

Ceci est la première exposition monographique en Europe de celui que Jerry Saltz - critique d’art du New York Magazine - saluait récemment comme un « génie mystique visionnaire ».

Melvin Way réalise des dessins complexes composés d’écritures de formules scientifiques, d’équations mathématiques, de diagrammes et de mots étroitement liés. Dans ses travaux, de discrètes zones ombrées séparent et bordent les blocs de texte, créant souvent des formes abstraites. Cet usage extrêmement habile du négatif et du positif est l’un de ses nombreux indéniables talents tout comme l’est son sens de la composition inné et de toute beauté.

Le langage alambiqué et le charabia parle à la maladie mentale de Way ; les jeux de mots et les doubles sens attestent de son génie. Way semble être le canal d’informations qu’il peut appréhender et nous non, qu’il transmet comme dans une sorte de bégaiement visuel.

Le caractère sacré de ses productions est particulièrement captivant. Les dessins de Melvin fonctionnent comme des talismans ou des amulettes. Ils sont manipulés, pliés, conservés dans la poche de l’artiste. Souvent, ils sont « réparés » ou joints à d’autres dessins avec du papier collant, sur lequel il va alors aussi dessiner. Ses billets nous envoûtent comme des incantations.

L’œuvre de Way, cependant, peut aussi être comprise dans le contexte d’autres œuvres d’art moderne ou contemporain. Way est un musicien, et ses pièces ont des affinités avec les partitions remarquables de John Cage, qui existent de la même manière à la fois comme notation musicale et dessin abstrait. En même temps, leur densité visuelle évoque les dessins de Mark Tobey.

Les créations de Melvin Way rappellent en outre les œuvres d’artistes dont les peintures et dessins sont des canaux qui mènent à un autre niveau plus spirituel. Comme Alfred Jensen, qui exploite de façon similaire l’élégance de l’équation, Way agence les mots écrits à la main et les nombres selon des systèmes d’arcane. Comme Hilma af Klint et Channa Horwitz, il dessine dans un langage secret tout en utilisant la beauté intrinsèque des diagrammes et des symboles.

J’ai toujours envie de décrocher du mur un Melvin Way pour le tenir dans mes mains. Ses petits travaux agréables au toucher ont une gravité particulière qui leur donne de la force.

Mais ils ont aussi une familiarité qui nous parle tendrement et sans détours.

La formule du principe d’incertitude telle qu’énoncée par Heisenberg, apparaît dans l’œuvre de Way comme prémisse qu’il mettrait en abîme : on ne peut connaître à la fois le lieu et la vitesse d’une particule. La maîtrise de l’un révoque celle de l’autre. Mutatis mutandis, les rares fois où l’on pense localiser la pensée de Melvin Way, elle fuse déjà bien vite sans que l’on puisse dire comment. Réciproquement, épouser un instant sa vitesse égare sur là où elle opère.

il est impossible de saisir avec justesse le temps et l’énergie d’un phénomène. Sic d’un artiste ou d’une œuvre. Les équations de buvard de Way rejoignent celles de la physique quantique pour révoquer toute tentative d’embrasser la dynamique d’une pensée. La seule certitude est qu’il ne saurait y en avoir. QED : si les travaux de Melvin Way laissent sans voix, en eux il est démontré pourquoi.

Mathématiques sévères et théorie quantique sont néanmoins secondaires pour appréhender l’œuvre de Way. Car la science qu’il manipule n’est qu’un medium pour des révélations plus hautes. Son

Une écriture, magique, évanescente et hiéroglyphique, propageant les confusions possibles sans qu’il ne faille pourtant s’en inquiéter.

Car après tout un quiproquo perd moins le sens qu’il ne le multiplie, ouvre l’herméneutique à tant de champs possibles. La pierre de Rosette manquante, indicée dans la première œuvre qui se donne à voir dans le catalogue, est ce qui fera éternellement défaut dès qu’on entreprendra de traduire la pensée de l’artiste. Et là encore la démonstration est hyperbolique : c’est bien l’incommunicabilité entre les êtres qui est l’universel dont Way est un vecteur singulier.

En dépit des apparences, manquera toujours la pierre de rosette de nos langages, acculés que nous sommes à l’illusion d’un partage de sens au fond jamais partagé.

algèbre est fondamentalement lettriste, sa chimie tendanciellement alchimique. Ses équations sont sans entorses, mais il s’agit moins d’une mathématique sans erreur que d’une algèbre de l’errance. Les théorèmes sont ici moments de poèmes, les chiffres vecteurs de l’indéchiffrable. Au fond c’est au modèle grec antique qu’il conviendrait de se référer : le contraire de la vérité (ἀλήθεια) n’est pas le mensonge ou l’erreur, mais l’oubli. Et c’est sans doute là une force majeure de l’artiste : faire trembler cette vérité avant qu’elle ne vacille définitivement dans l’oubli, le devenir-noir selon l’étymologie. Obscurcissant ses dessins comme pour en formuler une démonstration par l’absurde, l’artiste dispense des pans de ténèbres gagnant inexorablement sur l’écriture.

artiste, blogger, poète. a animé un atelier d’art de 1987 à 2006 dans le cadre du programme HAI (healing arts initiative).

C’était en 1989, en pleine épidémie de crack et de SIDA. Le centre pour hommes de Wards Island connaissait aussi une recrudescence de tuberculose à ce moment-là, 40 pour cent des pensionnaires en était atteint. Le personnel devait souvent faire du chantage : s’ils ne prenaient pas leur traitement, ils n’avaient pas de nouvelles baskets. Au travers du bois, il y avait des campements de squatteurs, des hommes qui avaient quitté le centre pour vivre à l’extérieur. Certains se sentaient plus en sécurité au dehors.

Avant d’atteindre le pont, j’ai épinglé ma carte d’identité pour avertir de potentiels voleurs que je travaillais au centre, ce qui m’éviterait d’être dépouillé ou d’être accidentellement pris pour un résident.

J’ai pris la ligne numéro 6 en direction de la 103e rue. J’ai longé un pâté de maisons vers la East River et j’ai pris le pont piétonnier qui mène à Wards Island. J’ai traversé une petite zone boisée pour atteindre le foyer pour hommes sans abri Keener. Dans un centre de 800 lits, 300 des hommes sont atteints de troubles mentaux.

C’est ici que j’ai rencontré Melvin Way pour la première fois, alors qu’il participait à un atelier d’art réservé au public de l’hôpital.

cause des dealers de drogue et des voleurs, mais par son côté sauvage. Je pouvais souvent repérer des faucons à queue rouge (à l’époque où il n’y avait plus qu’une douzaine de nids à New York). J’ai aperçu quelques fois des coyotes et un jour j’ai vu Anthony Quinn à vélo sur Wards Island.

On pouvait sentir les esprits des âmes perdues sur Wards Island ; on entrait dans une réalité parallèle.

Marcher jusqu’à Wards island avait quelque chose d’orwellien, avec ces malades isolés sur l’île. L’hôpital public de Manhattan et la prison pour les criminels fous se trouvaient près du centre. On était en lien avec Randall’s Island, puis, de l’autre côté de Hell Gate, il y avait Rikers Island. Il règnait une atmosphère agressive sur Wards Island, pas seulement à

Les gosses de Harlem s’en prenaient souvent aux malades mentaux. Au cours d’une nuit tragique d’Halloween, un gars sans abri a été jeté par-dessus le pont.

Une autre fois, ils se sont mis des masques de la série de films d’horreur Vendredi 13 et ont volé et poignardé deux hommes du centre dont un qui en est mort.

Le jour de versement des pensions par la Sécurité sociale les résidents les plus stables et les plus solides accompagnaient les plus fragiles de l’autre côté du pont jusqu’à Manhattan pour toucher leurs chèques. Les dealers de drogues s’attaquaient aussi aux résidents du centre, et récupéraient parfois 400 ou 500 clients.

Ils savaient quand les hommes avaient leurs chèques de la Sécurité sociale. Ils prenaient aussi 30 à 50 pour cent d’intérêt sur des prêts majorés. Le personnel du centre a fini par organiser un système de gestion de l’argent des résidents, en ne leur délivrant qu’un salaire journalier afin que leur pension ne soit pas épuisée avant la fin du mois.

Melvin Way est né à Ruffin, dans l’état de Caroline du Sud en 1954. Dans son enfance, il a fait le yoyo de Caroline du Sud à New-York avant de s’installer finalement à Brooklyn. Au collège, il s’intéressait beaucoup aux sciences, à la botanique, à la chimie et plus tard, apprit à jouer de plusieurs instruments de musique. Après le lycée, il a intégré l’école technique RCA et a travaillé un court moment comme machiniste avant d’atteindre le grade d’homme de presse qualifié.

Chaque semaine où je suis venu sur l’île j’ai apporté de nouveaux livres pour Melvin : diagrammes médiévaux, cartes, graphiques, profondeurs navigables des eaux environnantes. J’ai partagé avec lui certains de mes propres travaux. On parlait de Einstein et des pouvoirs hallucinatoires du cerveau humain. Entre la matière grise et la matière blanche, « nous n’utilisons que 10% des capacités de notre cerveau ».

Melvin n’était pas d’accord avec ce mythe et prétendait atteindre 30 à 40 pour cent.

Un jour, il mangea ses spaghettis avec du ketchup. Je lui dis que c’était un péché mortel d’utiliser du ketchup comme sauce, surtout en présence d’un italien.

Il affirmait avoir une foule de connections de l’autre côté du pont – dans le Harlem espagnol, à l’ancienne frontière entre les italiens et les Portoricains – tout au long de la 116e rue. Des anges gardiens, parlant souvent une langue que lui seul comprenait, le protégeaient. Hermétique, compulsif, il s’acharnait sur des lettres, des nombres et des codes.

J’ai découvert Melvin à ce moment-là car il participait à mon cours d’art. Toutes les semaines, il me montrait les formules secrètes qu’il mettait au point. Il était très paranoïaque, « Je ne les partage avec personne d’autre ». Plus tard, j’ai apporté les carnets de notes de de Vinci ; il était fasciné et a commencé à décoder ses écrits en les convertissant en symboles, insistant sur le fait que son interprétation faisait parfaitement sens. Il a aussi été attiré par les couleurs vibrantes des Postimpressionnistes, et a utilisé le terme de « fauvisme » dans une nouvelle acception.

Nous parlions de l’artiste comme d’une bête sauvage, vide de toute histoire de l’art et recherchions une nouvelle forme abstraite, une nouvelle couleur.

Dans ma classe d’art, je travaillais avec des malades mentaux. Sur les 800 pensionnaires, 100 d’entre eux fréquentaient la salle. C’était comme de pêcher : je devais au moins en attirer trente d’entre eux, même s’ils ne faisaient que regarder un livre d’art. Ils étaient surtout attirés par les livres de graffitis. Les auteurs de graffitis étaient souvent mon appât. J’ai grandi avec beaucoup d’entre eux, y compris Tracy 168 avec qui j’ai été coursier dans le centre-ville.

1989 a été une année sombre à New York City. Mon boulot consistait à amener l’art dans la vie de mes étudiants pendant mes 2 heures de cours hebdomadaires. Pour beaucoup, faire de l’art était thérapeutique, mais quelques-uns avaient un vrai talent. Leur art avait plus de force que ce que je voyais dans les galeries, dans le monde de l’art professionnel. Je menais une existence marginale à cette époque, squattant dans un immeuble appelé le Bullet Space, un collectif d’artistes urbains.

Après son séjour à Wards Island, Melvin a beaucoup bougé. La résidence de Bowery sur la 116e rue était moins carcérale que Wards Island. Quelques temps après, accusé d’avoir provoqué un incendie dans cette résidence, Melvin fut renvoyé au foyer pour hommes mais à Fort Washington cette fois. J’organisais aussi des ateliers dans cette structure et nous avons donc continué notre relation qui s’est muée en véritable amitié. L’art est devenu le traitement thérapeutique de Melvin et aussi le mien.

J’ai rencontré beaucoup de génies dans ces foyers pour sans abris, des gens pour qui la vie était allée trop vite, submergés par l’électricité, le bruit, le rythme effréné de la ville. Ces asiles servaient de maison de retraite pour prostituées, transsexuels, coiffeurs, anciens drogués qui se sentaient perdus dans la mégapole. J’avais l’impression d’être devant les meilleurs artistes de New York durant cette période de 20 ans ; Melvin avait la production artistique la plus authentique de tous.

Born in 1954 in South Carolina, he grew up in Brooklyn and became passionate about science and music. Schizophrenia prevented him from continuing his studies however, and beginning in the 1970s, he went back and forth between psychiatric institutions and homeless shelters. And it is in one of these, on Wards Island, that the artist Andrew Castrucci discovered him in 1989. But since “imagining will always be greater than living,” as Bachelard used to write, Melvin began to express his quest for new horizons through art. It is during a long process, which can last for months, that Melvin covers fragments of papers with writing, numbers, mathematical and chemical formulas, and geometric figures. Slipped into a book or in a pocket, these faux palimpsests keep the traces of all his regrets, even the slightest convulsions of his soul. Melvin Way’s notations end up looking, as Jay Gornay pointed out, “like the remarkable music scores of John Cage,” blending in the same way feverish composition with poetics of the sign in a prodigious symphony whose music stretches out before the eyes.

For all we know, his pages – as if emerging from a melancholic codex – attest to his obsession with time and space; his equations appear to want to locate vortexes, these crossing points that lead from one to another. It is a way – for the man who sometimes signs Melvin “Milky” Way – of freeing himself from his earthly condition. ”

Melvin Way makes intricate drawings composed of closely written scientific formulas, mathematical equations, diagrams, and words. In these works, discrete shaded areas separate and create borders for blocks of text, often forming abstract shapes. This extremely skillful use of positive and negative space is one of Way’s many formal accomplishments, as is his innate and exquisite sense of composition.

Convoluted language and word salads speak to Way’s mental illness; puns and double meanings attest to his brilliance. Way seems to be channeling information that he can apprehend and we cannot, passing it along as in a kind of visual stutter.

Particularly compelling is the numinous aspect of these works. Way’s drawings function as talismans, or amulets. They are handled, folded, kept in the artist’s pocket. Often, they are mended, or joined to other drawings with tape, which is then also drawn on. They have the power of charms or incantations.

Way’s oeuvre, however, can also be understood in the context of other modern and contemporary artworks. Way is a musician, and his pieces have affinities with John Cage’s remarkable scores, which similarly exist as both notation and abstract drawing.

At the same time, their visual density is reminiscent of the drawings of Mark Tobey.

Way’s creations additionally conjure works by artists whose paintings and drawings are conduits to another, more spiritual plane. Like Alfred Jensen, who similarly mined the elegance of the equation, Way orders handwritten words and numbers according to arcane systems. Like Hilma af Klint and Channa Horwitz, he draws on a private language while utilizing the innate beauty of diagrams and symbols.

I always want to lift a Melvin Way off the wall and hold it in my hands. These small, tactile artworks have a high specific gravity, giving them force. But they also have an intimacy that speaks softly and directly.

Off-course derivatives, integrals woven into an art of primitives, ethereal equations and chemistry without a solution, Melvin Way’s deeply moving fragments cast a spell on the person examining them: that of bringing about a radical, embarrassing doubt, beyond the work itself, everything that can a gaze can touch. Δ𝑝xΔ𝑞x >h

The formula for the principle of uncertainty as formulated by Heisenberg appears in Way’s work as a postulate that he apparently puts into infinite regression: one cannot know both the place and speed of a particle at the same time. Knowledge of the one precludes that of the other. Mutatis mutandis, in the rare moments when we think we might have identified Melvin Way’s thoughts, they are already streaming forth without us being able to explain how. Reciprocally adopting his speed, for a split second, leads astray in the places where he operates. In other words, according to a second writing about the relationship of indeterminacy inscribed in his drawings: ΔEΔt≥h/4π

It is impossible to accurately grasp the time and the energy of a phenomenon. Just as with an artist or a work. Way’s blotting paper equations go with those from quantum physics in that they preclude any attempt to embrace the dynamics of a thought. The only certitude is that there could never be one. QED: if Melvin Way’s works leave us speechless, the reason why is demonstrated within them.

Rigorous mathematics and quantum theory are nevertheless secondary for understanding Way’s works. For the science he manipu-

A magical, evanescent and hieroglyphic writing, propagating possible confusions, though without causing alarm. For after all, a misunderstanding is less a loss of meaning than it is a multiplication, a hermeneutic opening to as many areas as possible. The missing Rosetta stone, indexed in the first work, which is shown in the catalog, will be eternally wanting as soon as we try to translate the artist’s thoughts. And even then the demonstration is hyperbolic: it is the very incommunicability between beings that is the universal of which Way is a singular vector. Despite appearances, the Rosetta stone of our languages will always be missing, cornered as we are in the illusion of a sharing of meaning that deep down is never shared.

lates is none other than a means to greater revelations. His algebra is fundamentally Lettrist, his chemistry tendentiously alchemical.

His equations don’t break the rules, but it is less about math without errors than about an algebra of wandering. The theorems here are moments of poetry, and the numbers vectors of the undecipherable.

Ultimately, we should be referring to the ancient Greek model: the opposite of truth (ἀλήθεια) is not a lie or error, but forgetfulness.

And surely that is a force majeure for the artist: making this truth quiver before it definitively vacillates into oblivion, a becoming-black, as in the etymology. Obscuring his drawings as if to use them to formulate a demonstration through the absurd, the artist dispenses sections of shadows, inexorably winning over the writing.

Melvin Way’s work is in this way the best teaching: it is less about understanding us than it is about filling us with wonder.

I took the #6 line to 103rd. I walked a block towards the East River and took the footbridge to Wards Island. I walked through a small wooded area to get to Keener Men’s Shelter. In an 800-bed shelter, 300 of the men were diagnosed with mental illness.

I first met Melvin Way here running an art workshop through Hospital Audiences.

It was 1989, at the time of the crack and AIDS epidemic.

Wards Island Men’s Shelter also had a TB outbreak at this time, 40 percent of the shelter had TB. The staff often had to bribe the men: if they didn’t take their TB meds, they wouldn’t get new sneakers. The walk through the woods had squatter encampments, men who had abandoned the shelter to live outside. Some felt safer outside.

Before hitting the footbridge, I pinned on my ID to let any thieves know I worked at the shelter so I wouldn’t get robbed, and also wouldn’t accidentally get mistaken for a resident.

The kids from Harlem often preyed on the mentally ill. On one tragic Halloween night, a homeless guy was thrown off the bridge. They wore Friday the 13th masks, and robbed and stabbed two men from the shelter, one fatally.

into the Harlem River and spitting out into Long Island Sound under Hell Gate. Many ships have sunk in these treacherous underwater canyons. You could feel the spirits of lost souls on Wards Island; you were stepping into another realm.

Melvin Way was born in Ruffin, South Carolina in 1954. In his childhood years, he seesawed back and forth from South Carolina to New York, finally settling in Brooklyn. In high school, he had a great interest in science, botany, and chemistry, and later learned how to play various musical instruments. Between Rikers and Blackwell Islands I discovered Melvin at this point participating in my art classes. Each week he I discovered fishing holes on Wards Island, would show me secret formulas he was the triangle of the East River slowing going developing.

On Social Security check day, the more stable, stronger shelter residents walked the more frail men across the footbridge into Manhattan to cash their checks.

Drug dealers would also prey on shelter residents, sometimes collecting 400-500 customers. They knew when the men got their SSI checks. They also took 3050 percent interest on marked-up loans.

Eventually, the shelter staff organized a money management system for the shelter residents, only giving them daily stipends so their money would last through the month.

In my art class, I worked with the mentally ill. Out of an 800 bed shelter, 100 men filled the room. It was like fishing: I had to hook in at least 30 of them, even if they only looked at an art book. They mostly gravitated to graffiti art books. The graffiti writers were often my hook. I grew up with many of them, including Tracy 168, who taught me how to the ride the subways when we were both messengers in Midtown.

Each week I visited the island I brought new books for Melvin: medieval diagrams, maps, charts, navigational depths of the surrounding waters. I shared with him some of my own work and tried to get him to interpret local tide charts, the new moon. We spoke about Einstein and the hallucinatory power of the human brain.

Between gray and white matter, “we only use 10 percent of the brain.” Melvin disagreed with this myth and claimed he reaches 30–40 percent, he had his rocket fuel. He had his spaghetti with ketchup one day. I told him it was a mortal sin to use ketchup as a sauce, especially so close to an Italian neighborhood.

He claimed to have mob connections on the other side of the footbridge – in Spanish Harlem, the former border line between

the Italians and Puerto Ricans – all the way up to 116th street. Guardian angels were protecting him, often speaking in languages only he could understand.

Hermetic, compulsory, he was raging with letters and numbers and codes.

His drawings are a mixed salad of chemical equations, prophecies, angels rehearsing a plan that makes no sense to the common man. The poetry adds up to a rhythm that’s soothing and static at the same time. The receiver is off the hook, numbers just keep coming out, he was extremely confident in what he was saying in his works.

He was extremely paranoid, “I do not share them with anybody else.” I later brought in da Vinci’s notebooks; he was fascinated, and started to decode da Vinci’s backwards writing in symbols, insisting that his interpretation made perfect sense. He also gravitated to the vibrant colors of the Post-Impressionists, and used the term “fauvism” in a new equation. We talked about the artist as a wild beast, void of all art history, other past art as forgeries. We talked about searching for a new form, a new abstract shape, a new color.

1989 was a dark time in New York City. My job was to bring art into the lives of my students during my weekly 2 hour visit.

For many of them it was therapeutic to make art, but there were a few who had real talent. Their art was more powerful 45

than what I was seeing in the galleries, in the professional art world. I also lived a marginal existence during this period, squatting in a building named Bullet Space, an urban artists’ collaborative.

He was very paranoid when he showed me his drawings. They were top secret. Computer diagrams and cryptograms decoded into chemistry formulas. It was like talking to Walt Disney on LSD. Barry White, Isaac Haynes, the future of things to come. Double-edged Sword When Melvin is not on his meds he’s more productive; his drawings become his therapy. Some of the men and women at the shelters were on so many medications, some experimental, that it was hard to work with them. He needs to draw everyday, at least 3-4 hours sporadically, or he’ll get sick.

He would sometimes come off as some sort of rambling mad man, speaking in semiotext-schizo-jisms, and over the years he was often misunderstood by his caseworkers and misdiagnosed by his doctors. They would send him to Manhattan State Psychiatric Hospital, where he was forced to take meds that were sometimes needed and sometimes not. When I got the word that Melvin was at Manhattan State, I would often visit, bringing pens, paper, and tape with me.

I continued my workshops, starting a mural project at Fort Washington. I’d painted collaborative murals at many of the places I’d worked before, but this one was more controversial. Melvin and I directed the mural design, an upside down skyline of New York, Melvin adding his writings, spitting out words and codes like a raging river at peak tide. Other guys from the shelter filled in colors and silhouettes of buildings. Another guy tied the skyline composition together by painting a bridge.

This guy always painted bridges, often escaping to draw the George Washington bridge a block away, from the highest hill in Manhattan. One day, he broke down and pushed an innocent rider off the subway platform, severing both his legs.

After this incident, cops, detectives, social workers, and psychiatrists were all over

the shelter, and the state passed a new law that required mentally ill patients to take their meds on a strict regimen of daily doses. Afterwards, it was hard to run my workshops; everyone was in a catatonic state. Fort Washington became a fort of zombies.

Fort Washington Men’s Shelter. I also had workshops at these sites, so we continued to keep up with each other, building a friendship. Art became Melvin’s meds, and also mine.

I asked to be transferred to Fort Washington where Melvin was based.

We needed to see each other, and looked forward to our weekly meeting. He became my teacher, as I was his.

I always saw Melvin as the most honest artist alive today, a visionary, who could put a mirror to the rest of us, to our madness. Melvin is a true futurist, a Dadaist, a noise musician with words and numbers, but his work is still pure of any -isms.

I felt like I was witnessing the best artists in New York during this 20 year period.

My bosses often missed the boat, not gravitating to the Melvins out there who were making the most heartfelt art of anyone alive.

He still travels with his drawings, digging into his pockets for them like others obsessively searching for a cell phone, text-messaging. He has his pen, his sword, always nibbling away, writing on his textured, stained, sweaty paper. Always dialing, waiting for the next spark.

The frustration of talent trying to rise to the top, expo sure to get Melvin’s work out there.

The shelters: the fine line of sanity

Melvin is an outsider now starting to move inside. His time has come, just like he predicted in his drawing, The Universal Balm.

The shelters I worked at felt like retirement homes for prostitutes, transexuals, hair dressers, former addicts, display window artists, graf artists who got lost in this big city.

His drawings turned softer, with more greens and blues, as his meds were kicking in. They reminded me of van Gogh’s paintings when he was sent to Saint Remy Asylum.

I came across many geniuses in those shelters, people for whom life had become too fast, people overpowered by the electricity, the noise, the speed of this naked city.

Lloyd Williams, a famous basketball player from the 1970s, wound up at “the Fort.” So did Noc 167, the front man of the graffiti “wildstyle» movement.
