L'art brut est l'expression d'une mythologie individuelle, affranchie du régime et de l'économie de l'objet d'art. Ces oeuvres sans destinataire manifeste sont produites par des personnalités qui vivent dans l'altérité – qu'elle soit mentale ou sociale. Leurs productions nous renvoient tantôt à la métaphysique de l'art c'est-à-dire à la pulsion créatrice comme tentative d'élucidation du mystère d'être au monde - tantôt au besoin de réparer ce monde, de le soigner, de le rendre habitable.

Art Brut is the expression of an individual mythology liberated from the system and economy of the art object. This work, produced with no clear audience in mind, is created by individuals who live in "otherness", be it psychological or social. Sometimes it draws our attention to the metaphysics of art - the creative urge as an attempt to elucidate the mystery of existence - and at others, to the need to repair the world, to care for it, to make it habitable.

José Manuel Egea, né en 1988 à Madrid, est fasciné depuis son enfance par la figure du lycanthrope, ou loup-garou. Non seulement est-il convaincu d’en être un lui-même, mais il paraît vouloir nous révéler, par ses oeuvres, que ce double monstrueux sommeille chez beaucoup d’entre nous, pour ne pas dire chez tous.

Pour ce faire, il a développé une riche palette de représentations de cet « autre » que chacun recèle : cela va du dessin aux interventions sur des portraits photographiques tirés de magazines ou de livres d’art, en passant par la sculpture et les performances lors desquelles il « joue » sa transformation.

Cette créature mythologique est évidemment le symbole d’une trouble dualité, mais elle incarne dans le même temps une grande puissance, mystérieuse, et capable d’exercer un ascendant sur l’homme, de lui inspirer de la peur. Alors quoi de mieux, pour l’exorciser, que de jouer avec cette peur, de vouloir devenir la peur elle-même et se sentir investi de sa force ?

Cet iconoclasme peut aller jusqu’à la scission de la page, nette, comme pour accentuer la fracture entre deux mondes ; parfois même, c’est le recouvrement complet de la feuille, d’où l’on devine alors à peine, vaincue dans la noirceur, la beauté factice que ces images nous imposaient.

Plusieurs images : une gestuelle simple, brute, étrangement systématique. Une gestuelle qui ne chercherait nullement à tendre vers une forme de perfectionnement, ni à se rouler dans une virtuosité auto-complaisante. Parfois réduite à sa plus simple expression : un recouvrement quasi intégral du visible.

Les productions de José Manuel Egea ne sont que rarement des dessins créés à parDes visages biffés, violemment scindés ou tir d’une page blanche, mais résultent soulacérés de traits concentriques. Que c’est celle-ci qui fonde notre regard sur ses œuvres. Un désir de calquer sur le monde extérieur le filtre de son monde intérieur. Une certaine définition de l’art.

Bien qu’il ait commencé à peindre et à dessiner dès son plus jeune âge, José Manuel Egea a mûri son travail dans les ateliers du collectif Debajo del Sombrero1 (collectif Sous le Chapeau), dont il fait partie depuis 2010. Le spectre formel de son travail s’étend du dessin aux retouches de pages de magazines, et comprend également la réalisation de poupées, de masques, de sculptures ainsi que des performances.

Depuis l’âge de 10 ans, José Manuel Egea (Madrid, 1988) est fasciné par le mythe du loupgarou et, en particulier, par la phase de transformation de l’homme en bête, par ce passage du blanc au noir, de l’humain à la terrible et puissante créature.

Le propos d’Egea n’est pas de couvrir l’image de noir mais plutôt d’invoquer l’animal qui réside dans le sujet du portrait et qui lutte pour s’échapper. [...]

Egea n’a pas de difficulté à se connecter à « la part de loup » - comme il l’appelle - qui réside sous l’apparence de tout individu. Il la connaît bien grâce à ses crises au cours desquelles il a besoin de hurler pour se calmer et de déchirer toute sorte de chose, tout spécialement ses vêtements.

Sa famille raconte qu’à la maison il a l’habitude de déchirer des papiers, de préférence des magazines ou des livres d’images, notamment sur l’art, qu’ils doivent retirer de sa vue afin d’éviter qu’il les déchire ou qu’il en arrache la couverture.

Son entourage atténue cette pulsion en rangeant les livres à l’envers de telle sorte que ni la tranche ni la couverture ne soit pas visible. Il déchire également les cadres et les affiches ; certains restent accrochés en lambeaux, ce qui interloque les visiteurs.

L’imagination d’Egea L’imagination d’Egea est nourrie par les personnages et les caractéristiques physiques associés au monde du loup-garou, est influencée par le langage des comics Marvel, et par-dessus tout, traduit son propre monde : singulier et cohérent.

Les griffes sont des mains pointues et stylisées desquelles une articulation tend à apparaître sur chaque doigt sous la forme d’un cercle. Les oreilles, également pointues, nous rappellent quelquefois davan-

tage les oreilles d’un lapin que celles d’un loup, comme si ce qui importait le plus, était de signaler leur étonnante croissance.

Souvent, il évide, noircit ou perfore les yeux des images de magazines. Il est rare qu’il n’intervienne pas sur les yeux pour effacer ce qu’ils ont d’« humain ».

La pleine lune, dont l’évocation est présente dans la légende associée à la transformation de l’homme au loup, est dessinée par Egea comme une sorte de grenade qui contient simultanément plusieurs autres cercles.

Autre élément très présent dans son œuvre : la représentation du museau et de la gueule du loup, ou selon son expression « le museau jusqu’ici » qu’il appelle aussi « macho factor », bien que personne ne sache vraiment ce que cela veut dire. On peut observer ce museau dessiné pardessus la photocopie d’une photographie où il apparaît à côté d’enfants. Au-dessus, à gauche, est représentée la lune-grenade.

Une série de mots ou de phrases qui lui plait est également mystérieusement répétée dans ses dessins : androgyne, naissance, transformation, machistar (« faire macho »), fantariló, guéndido, J’aimerai voir mon père naître, sacristie, être né nu, cordon ombilical, Aldano Pegalobeces (Aldano l’attacheur de bestialité), l’idiot, la plage, attacher la bestialité à un adolescent qui devient mi-homme mi-loup, Qu’ils dorment avec lui, devenir noir, hypertrichose, crisálinda, (« jolie chrysalide »), rester noir éternellement, hominidés – il semblerait que les hominidés lui fassent énormément peur.

Dans ses travaux récents, il s’est beaucoup intéressé aux bâtons qu’il récupère dans la rue et dans les arbres. Il les associe à la mort du loup-garou, ce qui résulte d’une intéressante confusion car, traditionnellement, un loup-garou ne peut être tué qu’avec une balle en argent, bien que l’image du pieu, traditionnellement liée à la mort des vampires, s’avère être plus organique et puissante. Cette fusion ou confusion des créatures légendaires n’est pas insensée. Toutes deux sont considérées comme les deux mythes les plus universels qui existent. Toutes deux sont en lien avec l’homme-bête, indestructible par les conventions, et extrêmement fort, malin et rapide.

Un archétype: la Puissance L’autre créature légendaire qui fascine Egea, quoique moins que le lycanthrope, est Hulk, le superhéros de Marvel, La Masa (« La Masse »), dont les principaux attributs sont la puissance colossale de son énorme corps qu’Egea aime imiter.

José Manuel Egea semble avoir un attrait particulier pour la force et, comme nous l’avons dit précédemment, la faculté unique d’appeler la bête qui se terre sous la surface, afin de révéler la puissance, l’animal, la noirceur. La carte de tarot, Arcana numéro XI, « La Force, » reflète bien la puissance symbolique des créations d’Egea.

L’Arcana XI est représentée dans le tarot de Marseille comme une femme ouvrant la gueule d’un lion. Elle l’ouvre sans effort, malgré son nom, car cette carte, par-des-

sus toutes, symbolise un passage : une ouverture à la connaissance du subconscient.

Elle nous invite à dépasser le masque afin de créer des liens avec l’animal qui réside en nous et à convertir cela en puissance.

Cette force archaïque, comprise non seulement comme physique mais aussi mentale, apparaît être le moteur et la direction de sa recherche artistique.

José Manuel Egea, born in 1988 in Madrid, has been fascinated with the figure of the lycanthrope, or the werewolf, since his childhood. Not only is he convinced of being one himself, but he seems to want to reveal to us, through his works, that the double monstrosity lies beneath the surface for many of us, if not all of us.

In order to do this, he has developed a rich palette of representations of this “Other” that everyone harbors: from sketches to drawings on photographic portraits taken from magazines or art books, including sculpture and performances during which he “plays out” his transformation. This mythological creature is obviously the symbol of a blurry duality, but it embodies a great power at the same time, mysterious, and capable of exerting an influence on mankind, of inspiring fear in him. So what would be better, to exorcize it, than to play with this fear, to seek to become the fear itself, and to feel invested with its force?

It isn’t insignificant that Egea makes this dark side appear, especially using images printed on glossy paper whose only

purpose was to seduce us. He conjures our bestiality there, made of shadowy and menacing silhouettes, enucleated eyes, triumphant hairiness and lupine attributes. And this is the reversal in the other side of the mirror. This iconoclasm can reach the gutter of the page, clear-cut, as if to accentuate the fracture between two worlds; sometimes even, it is the complete covering of the page, through which we can barely see, vanquished in the darkness, the fictitious beauty that these images impose on us.

José Manuel Egea gives himself over to liberating play since, even though he mangles our humanity, by freeing himself from the norm, he reveals the grandeurs of alterity to us in a pure and unrestrained artistic gesture.

An image could be nothing. The result of mechanical scribbling to cast boredom away during a telephone conversation. Or adding of a few pen marks on an advertisement in order to change it in a slightly schoolchild way.

Many images: simple body language, brute, strangely systematic. Body language that refuses to try to become a form of perfection, or wrap itself in self-indulgent virtuosity. At times reduced to its most simple expression: an almost complete covering of the visible.

Crossed-out faces, violently split or lacerated with concentric marks. Enucleated eyes, a mouth with vampire canines coming out of it, pointing ears, crayon marks like fur covering the face. The archetypal reminiscences from fantastic literature, cinematographic figures (the Beast from the Jean Cocteau’s film, Chewbacca from Star Wars) or superheroes from the comic sphere (Jack Russell the werewolf,

Wolverine). Recurrent, haunting monsters, echoes of the animality hidden in each of us. An active mythology.

José Manuel Egea’s works are only rarely drawings made on a white sheet, but are often the result of reappropriations of magazine advertisements, pages from comic books, photos of stars. Sometimes joined to make a collage, other times cut out or even hollowed out from a figurative form.

Most are not creations in the sense that they come from their author’s imagination or fancies. It is an indictment of the world.

At a time when the vision of the artist as a shaman is prospering (from Beuys to the current interpretations of parietal prehistoric art), it is easy to understand that the artistic production of José Manuel Egea might not be dissociated from its practice. That it is the latter which underpins our vision of his works. A desire to apply the filter of his interior world to the exterior world. A certain definition of art.

Since he was 10 years old, José Manuel Egea (Madrid, 1988) has been fascinated by the myth of the werewolf, and in particular, by the transformational phase of man to beast, by that passage from white to black, from human being to a powerful and terrible creature.

Even though he began to paint and draw as a young child, José Manuel Egea has developed most of his work in the workshops of the Colectivo Debajo del Sombrero1 (“Collective Under the Hat”), of which he has been a part since 2010. His works range from drawings to magazine alterations, even dolls and masks, and including sculpture and performance.

“Wolfness” in the Works of José Manuel Egea The fable of the man who transformed into a wolf is the root of Egea’s work and like it, also takes part in the performative nature of the myth. He often hollows out, blackens or perforates the eyes in the magazine images. It’s rare that he not do something to the eyes to erase “the human” from them.

Something that is also very present in his works is the representation of the snout and the jaws of the wolf, or, expressed in his own terms, the “snout up to here” which he also calls “macho factor,” though no one is really sure what that means. We can see this snout drawn over the photocopy of a photograph in which he appears next to some children. Above, to the left, is the pomegranate-moon.

José Manuel Egea seems to feel a special attraction to the strength, as well as, as we have been saying, the singular ability to call forth the beast that lies beneath the surface, in order to reveal the powerful, the animal, the darkness. There is a Tarot card, Arcana number XI, “Strength,” that reflects the symbolic power of Egea’s creations well. The Arcana XI is represented in the Marseilles Tarot as a woman opening the jaws of a lion. She opens them without effort, despite her name, because this card above all symbolizes a passage: an opening to the knowledge of 35
