Lieu emblématique de l’art brut, la maison des artistes de l’hôpital psychiatrique de Gug­ging, près de Vienne, en Autriche, a révélé depuis sa création par le docteur Navratil en 1981 quelques-uns des artistes bruts les plus iconiques de notre époque.

On sait moins que David Bowie – qui, avec Brian Eno, leur avait rendu visite en 1994 et collectionnait leurs œuvres - y trouva l’ins­piration de son album Outside. Tandis que l’artiste et collectionneur d’art brut Arnulf Rainer avait été durant de nombreuses années un habitué des lieux, travaillant même à quatre mains avec plusieurs de ses résidents.

Depuis qu’un fascicule de l’art brut leur a été consacré en 1983 – avec l’imprimatur de Dubuffet, d’habitude pourtant réticent à adouber les lieux de création institutionnels – les artistes de Gugging sont certainement ceux qui, dans ce champ, ont fait l’objet du plus grand nombre de publications, de films et d’expositions. Sans compter, qu’à l’instar de Hartung, Merz, Baldessari ou Kentridge, ils ont même été honorés collectivement en 1990 du Oskar Kokoschka Preis, plus haute distinction artistique autrichienne.

Aujourd’hui, tandis qu’une quinzaine d’artistes y vivent et travaillent toujours, l’aventure internationale de ce pavillon - fruit de la germination commencée dès les années 50 par ce psychiatre visionnaire

qu’était Léo Navratil - se poursuit avec une vigueur nouvelle : par la fondation en 2006, à l’instigation de son successeur le Dr Johann Feilacher, d’un musée exceptionnel et le développement d’une politique éditoriale extrêmement qualitative qui a fini d’établir la renommée de Gugging comme l’autre centre névralgique de l’art brut, avec la collection de Dubuffet fixée à Lausanne.

Plus d’une décennie après le premier hommage que nous leur avons rendu en 2006, nous sommes aujourd’hui très fiers de réunir les œuvres - des plus historiques, voire muséales, aux plus contemporaines - de 9 de ces artistes hors pair : Laila Bachtiar, Johann Fischer, Helmut Hladisch, Johann Korec, Heinrich Reisenbauer, Günther Schützenhofer, Leopold Strobl, Oswald Tschirtner et August Walla, à qui nous avons déjà consacré une exposition et un catalogue en 2015.

An emblematic art brut space, the artists’ house of the Gugging psychiatric hospital near Vienna, in Austria, has, since its creation in 1981 by Doctor Navratil, uncovered some of the most iconic Brut artists of our time.

It is less well-known that David Bowie – who, with Brian Eno, had visited them in 1994 and collected their works – found inspiration for his album Outside there. Meanwhile the artist and collector of Art Brut Arnulf Rianer had been a regular visitor of the space for many years, even doing one-on-one hands-on work with many of its residents.

Ever since an Art Brut fascicle was dedicated to them in 1983 – with the imprimatur of Dubuffet, although he was usually reluctant to endorse institutional spaces of creation – the artists of Gugging are certainly the ones who, in this field, have been the focus of the greatest number of publications, films and exhibits. Not to mention that, like Hartung, Merz, Baldessari or Kentridge, they were even collectively honored in 1990 with the Oskar Kokoschka Preis, the highest artistic distinction in Austria.

Today, with about fifteen artists still living and working there, the international renown of this pavilion – the fruit of seeds planted in the 1950s by the visionary psychiatrist Léo Navreatil – continues with a

renewed vigor: through the foundation of an exceptional museum in 2006, at the request of his successor Dr. Johann Feilacher, and the development of an extremely qualitative editorial policy that ended up establishing the renown of the Gugging as the other neuralgic center for Art Brut, after Dubuffet’s collection located in Lausanne.

More than a decade after we first paid homage to them in 2006, today we are very proud to gather the works – from the most historic, or even museumesque, to the most contemporary – of 9 of these unparalleled artists: Laila Bachtiar, Johann Fischer, Helmut Hladisch, Johann Korec, Heinrich Reisenbauer, Günther Schützenhofer, Leopold Strobl, Oswald Tschirtner and August Walla, to whom we already dedicated an exhibit and a catalogue in 2015.

laila bachtiar Laila Bachtiar est née en 1971 à Vienne. À partir de 1990, elle fréquente la Maison d’Artistes du Gugging une fois par semaine et depuis 2003 s’y rend quotidiennement.

Laila Bachtiar passe un temps considérable - crayon ou crayons de couleurs à la main - à dessiner, principalement des arbres, des animaux ou des humains. Après avoir rapidement esquissé un croquis aux traits continus, elle travaille les détails, ajoutant des lignes parallèles à sa structure. Cela produit - particulièrement dans ses dessins au crayon - un effet presque tridimensionnel vu à une certaine distance.

Ses oeuvres peuvent actuellement être trouvées dans de nombreuses collections privées.

Laila Bachtiar was born 1971 in Vienna.

From 1990, she visited the Gugging House of Artists once a week, since 2003 she has come daily to the atelier gugging.

Laila Bachtiar spends a considerable time on her pencil- or coloured pencil drawings featuring mainly trees, animals or humans. Having swiftly drawn the basic structure in almost unbroken lines, she elaborates on them in detail, putting line next to parallel line. This produces – particularly in her pencil drawings – an almost three-dimensional effect from a distance.

Her works can be found in numerous private collections.

johann fischer Né en 1919 à Eggendorf am Wagram (Basse-Autriche), Johann est apprenti maître-boulanger avant d’être mobilisé durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et est constitué prisonnier par les Américains. À sa libération, il prend la suite de son père à la tête du domaine agricole familial. Souffrant dès 1957 de troubles hallucinatoires, il est interné en clinique psychiatrique. En 1981, il intègre la Maison des Artistes et commence son impressionnante production.

Fischer, mort en 2008, n’utilisait que le crayon et les crayons de couleur. Sa palette, tout d’abord composée de tons de gris et de bruns, s’est élargie considérablement à l’aube des années 90. Les sujets plutôt simples des débuts se sont complexifiés progressivement pour aboutir à des histoires illustrées dans lesquelles le réel et l’imaginaire se côtoient constamment. Courtois, méthodique, Johann dessinait tous les matins et faisait suivre sa signature de sa qualité : Künstler ! (Artiste !). Durant de longues années, il a formé, avec Walla, Hauser et Tschirtner, le quatuor de tête des artistes de Gugging. Tandis que nombreux articles lui sont consacrés, ses créations figurent dans les plus grandes collections d’art brut au monde dont celle de David Bowie.

Born in 1919 in Eggendorf am Wagram (Lower Austria), Johann was the apprentice for a master-baker before being recruited during the Second World War and taken prisoner by the Americans. At his liberation, he followed in his father’s footsteps at the head of the family farm, suffering, however, from hallucinations starting in 1957, he was committed to a psychiatric clinic. In 1981, he joined the Haus der Künstler and began his impressive production.

Fischer, who died in 2008, only used pencil and color pencils. His palette, at first composed of gray and brown tones, grew considerably at the beginning of the 1990s. The rather simple subjects of his beginnings became progressively complex, leading to illustrated stories in which the real and the imaginary constantly intermingle. Courteous, methodical, Johann drew every morning and followed his signature with his occupation: Künstler ! (Artist!). For many years, he was, with Walla, Hauser and Tschirtner, one of the four leading artists of the Gugging. With numerous articles dedicated to him, his creations appear in the world’s greatest collections of Art Brut, including David Bowie’s.

helmut hladisch Helmut Hladisch né à Vienne en 1961, représente principalement dans ses dessins les choses qui l’entourent, des objets de quotidien. Des objets qu’il pousse à un tel point d’abstraction, que méconnaissables, ils ne peuvent être, une fois transformés, que devinés.

Ses œuvres tapissées de nombreux traits, offrent une surface accueillante pour l’œil du regardeur. Hladisch crée par ses lignes tracées au crayon, des images aux perspectives fantasques, qui donnent l’impression que ces objets mystérieux respirent.

Helmut Hladisch, born in Vienna in 1961, mainly depicts in his drawings the things that surround him, everyday objects. Objects that he pushes to such a point of abstraction that, unrecognizable, they can barely be made out once transformed.

His works, plentifully bestrewn with lines, offer a welcoming surface for the eye of the beholder. With his penciled lines, Hladisch creates images with fanciful perspectives that give the impression that these mysterious objects are breathing.

johann korec Né à Vienne en 1937, Korec, après avoir passé son enfance dans des foyers pour enfants et avoir fréquenté des écoles spécialisées, travailla dès l’âge de 14 ans comme valet de ferme et gardien de troupeau. Il rêvait de devenir dompteur dans un cirque. En 1958, il fut interné à Gugging et, alors qu’il dessinait depuis les années 60, rejoignit la Maison des artistes en 1981.

Copiant d’abord, à sa manière, des illustrations de journaux, ses œuvres – réalisées à l’encre de chine et à l’aquarelle - devinrent plus personnelles : les scènes érotiques, typiques de son travail, sont décrites et commentées à la manière d’un journal intime illustré.

Johann Korec grows up in institutions for homeless youths. After attending a school for retarded children, he works as a laborer at a farmstead. He is committed to Gugging mental hospital in 1958. Since 1981, he lives and works there in the «house for artists.» He had already begun working artistically in the 1960s.

Based on copies of illustrations that appeared in newspapers, and over several years time, he develops an independent painting technique of his own. His ink and aquarelle pictures primarily depict loving couples and erotic scenes, which can be interpreted as an illustrated diary.

heinrich reisenbauer Né en 1938 à Kirchau (Autriche), Reisenbauer arriva à Gugging lorsque, peu après ses années de lycée, on diagnostiqua une psychose. Après 30 ans d’internement dans un pavillon pour malades chroniques, il fut invité, en 1986, à venir s’établir dans la Maison des artistes.

Ses dessins, le plus souvent de petits formats réalisés aux crayons noir et de couleur, offrent invariablement une répétition quasi sérigraphique du sujet qui se distingue par d’infimes nuances. Il manifeste le même souci obsessionnel d’ordre et d’équilibre dans les tâches les plus quotidiennes. Ainsi, lorsqu’on lui confie la distribution des fruits aux pensionnaires de la Maison, l’exercice se transforme en véritable « installation » sur la table du déjeuner.

Avec le quatuor des Walla, Hauser, Tschirtner et Fischer, Reisenbauer est devenu, à l’échelon international, l’un des artistes les plus emblématiques de Gugging.

Born in 1938 in Kirchau (Austria), Reisenbauer arrived at the Gugging when, shortly after his years in high school, he was diagnosed with psychosis. After 30 years of hospitalization in a pavilion for chronic illness, he was invited, in 1986, to come live in the Maison des artistes.

His drawings, most often small and drawn with black and colored pencils, invariably offer an almost serigraphic repetition of a subject that varies in miniscule details. He displays the same obsessive concern for order and balance in the most trivial daily tasks. Thus, when he is charged with the distribution of fruit to the residents of the Maison, the exercise is transformed into a veritable “installation” on the lunch table.

With the Walla, Hauser, Tschirtner and Fischer foursome, Reisenbauer has become, at the international level, one of the most emblematic artists of the Gugging.

Günther Schützenhöfer, né en 1965, a été découvert et invité à rejoindre la Maison des artistes il y a seulement quelques années. Il y a développé son propre style très caractéristique. Günther trouve des formes abstraites autonomes aux objets les plus communs et fixe des touches de couleur spécifiques dans ses dessins au crayon qui souvent donnent l’impression d’être en trois dimensions. Après avoir terminé les contours du sujet , il les remplit de stries serrées, très lentement et posément.

Son oeuvre souvent drôle et pertinente se décline en petit et moyen format. Ses créations sont extrêmement déconcertantes, énigmatiques même, et leurs titres, à la fois nous éclairent et repoussent nos cadres traditionnels de la représentation.

günther schützenhöfer

Discovered and invited to the House of Artists only a few years ago, Günther Schützenhöfer, born in 1965, has developed his own unmistakable style. He finds self-contained, abstract shapes for simple objects and sets specific colour accents in his pencil drawings, which often appear virtually three-dimensional. Having completed the contours, Schützenhöfer colours in the resulting areas in calm strokes: very slowly and deliberately.

His often humorous and apposite oeuvre comprises small to medium-sized works so far.

Additionally, he has been working on larger formats for some time.

leopold strobl Leopold Strobl est né en 1960 à Mistelbach, en Basse-Autriche. D’après le peu d’éléments biographiques dont nous disposons à son sujet Leopold Strobl se présente comme un personnage kafkaïen qui aurait trouvé sa rédemption dans l’acte artistique ; celui-ci étant envisagé comme une médiation profonde permettant de garder à distance les démons de l’inconscient. Depuis plus de 35 ans il se consacre exclusivement à sa création et depuis 12 ans il fait partie du programme « Open Studio » de la Maison des artistes de Gugging, à Vienne. Il dessine chaque matin et s’obstine à finir au moins un dessin par session. Cette ascèse qu’il s’impose est liée au type de format choisi (la plupart de ses travaux étant aux dimensions 10 x 7,5 cm.). Strobl compose toujours ses dessins – ou ses éléments de collage- sur des coupures de papier journal savamment sélectionnées qu’il colle ensuite sur du papier à dessin. Chacun des travaux finis est signé au dos avec un symbole personnel, et annoté sur la technique utilisée ainsi que sur le temps de travail consacré à l’œuvre. « Parfois je me sens un peu bizarre… comme si quelque part je ne faisais pas partie de ce monde » dit Leopold Strobl.

Leopold Strobl, born in 1960 in Mistelbach, Lower Austria, and who from a scarce biographic record comes across as a Kafka-esque figure – yet one who found definitive solace and redemption in artistic practice; the focused contemplation that keeps mental demons at bay. Strobl has devoted himself exclusively to art for more than 35 years, and for the past 12 he has been a guest of the Open Studio program at the Gugging House of Artists in Vienna. He draws in the morning and single-mindedly finishes a new piece per session.

This aspect of his routine relates directly to his chosen format (most works are approximately 4.2 x 3.9 in.). Strobl always renders his drawings – or the component parts of his paper collages – on carefully selected newsprint clips, which he then adheres onto clean drawing paper. He signs the back of every finished work with a personal symbol, notes the technical specifications, and – remarkably – records how long it took him to complete it. « Sometimes I feel strange... as if I was not part of this world », says Leopold Strobl.

oswald tschirtner Oswald Tschirtner (1920-2007) est né près de Vienne, en Autriche. Dès son jeune âge, il manifeste son désir de devenir prêtre et sera placé dans un séminaire sacerdotal à l’âge de dix ans. Malgré son souhait d’entrer en faculté de théologie, il est recruté au service de l’Empire, puis dans l’armée allemande, où il doit participer à la campagne de Stalingrad.

Vers la fin de la guerre, il est fait prisonnier dans un camp au sud de la France. A son retour au pays, en 1946, il est interné dans un établissement psychiatrique, puis transféré huit ans plus tard à l’hôpital psychiatrique de Maria Gugging, où il devient pensionnaire de « La Maison des Artistes » (Das Haus der Künstler). C’est durant cette même période qu’il se met à dessiner.

Ses compositions frappent par leur style minimaliste, fait d’abréviation, d’abstraction, de synthèse et d’économie graphique. Ses sujets de prédilection sont des silhouettes dont il prolonge les traits interminablement. Seule une ligne court sur le papier et constitue le dessin, réduit ici à sa plus simple expression. Les personnages sont constitués de deux bras et d’une paire de jambes directement reliées à une tête. L’auteur fait systématiquement l’impasse sur le tronc et les extrémités des membres ; tout autre détail est également jugé superflu.

Oswald Tschirtner (1920-2007) was born near Vienna, Austria. From an early age he displayed a desire to become a priest and, aged ten, he was placed in a seminary. Later, despite his wish to enter a theology faculty, he was recruited into the service of the Reich, then the German army, and had to participate in the Stalingrad campaign. Towards the end of the war he was interned in a prison camp in southern France. Returning to his country, in 1946, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, then transferred eight years later to the psychiatric hospital in Maria Gugging, where he became an inmate of the Haus der Künstler (House of Artists). There he began to draw.

His compositions are striking because of their minimalist style, the result of abbreviation, abstraction, synthesis and graphic economy. His favourite subjects are silhouettes with lines that he elongated interminably. A sole line flows across the paper and constitutes the drawing, which is reduced here to its simplest form of expression. The figures consist of two arms and a pair of legs, directly linked to a head. The creator systematically chose to overlook the torso and the extremities of the limbs; he also esteemed any other details to be superfluous.

august walla August Walla, considéré depuis longtemps comme l’un des “classiques” de l’art brut était certainement le plus polyvalent d’entre eux. Cette reconnaissance est d’abord due à son psychiatre, le visionnaire Dr. Navratil : il l’avait accueilli dans son Haus der Künstler et lui avait consacré une importante monographie dès 1988. Mais, même si Walla a semble t-il toujours compensé sa réticence à la prise de parole - qu’il réservait à sa mère - par une créativité hors norme, son destin doit beaucoup à sa rencontre avec ses médecins, Leo Navratil puis Johann Feilacher.

Après une enfance marquée par le rejet, et durant laquelle sa mère le déguisait en petite fille par crainte qu’il ne soit enrôlé dans la Wehrmacht, après des va et-vient incessants entre foyers et hôpitaux psychiatriques, il pouvait enfin être lui-même. Pour faciliter son acclimatation, sa mère fut même autorisée à vivre avec lui dans l’hôpital.

Walla a toujours été un infatigable graphomane, un créateur de novlangues nourri des dictionnaires du Monde entier dont il aimait s’entourer. Le créateur polymorphe qu’il était commença dès la fin des années 50 à s’exprimer à travers la photographie, l’installation, le détournement d’objets, la dactylographie de manifestes, et ne cessa jamais de le faire.

August Walla – considered for a long time one of the “classics” of Art Brut – was certainly the most versatile of them. This recognition is first due to his psychiatrist, the visionary Dr. Navratil: he had taken him in at his Haus der Künstler, and had dedicated an important monograph to him in 1988. But, even if it would appear that Walla has always compensated for his reticence in speaking – which he reserved for his mother – with an uncommon creativity, his destiny owes much to his encounter with his doctors, Leo Navratil and then Johann Feilacher.

After a childhood marked by rejection, and during which his mother would disguise him as a little girl out of fear that he be drafted into the Wehrmacht (“armed forces”), after endless trips back and forth between homes and psychiatric hospitals, he could finally be himself. To facilitate his acclimation, his mother was even authorized to live with him in the hospital.

Walla was always a tireless graphomaniac, a creator of novolanguages derived from the dictionaries of the whole world, which he liked to surround himself with. The polymorphous creator that he was began at the end of the 1950’s to express himself through photography, installation, the transformation of objects, dactylography of manifestos, and he never stopped doing it.
