Que se passe t-il quand le sens se dérobe sous la profusion des signes ? Quand, écrivant du dessin ou dessinant de l’écrit, il n’est plus question que de dire, par tous les moyens à sa disposition. Au risque, sans doute, que ce métalangage ne traverse le ciel sans toucher aucune cible. Rendant plus manifeste encore que nul autre que son auteur n’était sans doute visé. À moins, à moins que l’un de nous ne passe par là, prêt à s’émouvoir de ce soliloque, prêt à comprendre, littéralement à prendre en soi ce déferlement sémantique qui s’apparente à la « pulsion babélienne » dont parle Eric Dussert dans notre catalogue d’exposition. Et celui-là deviendrait de facto le destinataire providentiel de ce sibyllin déferlement, non pas comme un cryptographe hors pair, mais comme quelqu’un qui retrouverait en lui toutes les potentialités de l’expression. Capable aussi bien de ressentir le pouvoir évocateur de l’idéogramme, image et texte indissociés, comme aux temps immémoriaux, ou de se délecter des divagations durant lesquelles la science et la poésie vont l’amble. Voire d’éprouver la petite musique des graphorrhées qui se déploient comme des mantras.

Le rythme et la composition, dans une tension constante, semblent vouloir y révéler un sens nouveau, primal, comme un cri. D’ailleurs,

comme l’on parle d’éclats de voix, ne devrait-on pas parler d’éclats de signes ? Ainsi, toute glossographie nous apparaîtrait non plus comme une incapacité à maîtriser les codes du langage, mais plutôt comme la manifestation profonde d’une urgence, doublée de la nécessité d’échapper aux conventions réductrices. Cet écart majeur offrant, pour celui qui le commet, d’arpenter des voies inexplorées capables d’apporter des réponses inédites à des questions irrésolues. Quand il ne s’agit pas simplement de protéger des incursions profanes le mystère ou le sacré qui se dévoileraient là.

Ce qui sourd alors, dans ces palimpsestes, ces chiffrements magiques, ces imprécations véhémentes, ces mots sédimentés, ces itérations hypnotiques, ces vocables secrets, c’est la formidable plasticité d’une langue primordiale qui les contiendrait toutes.

Satisfaits de ce que l’être humain a élaboré un système astucieux pour porter les messages, compter les biens, marquer les bêtes et inscrire pour la postérité le nom des rois, des reines et des héros, ils se sont justement réjouis, témoignant en l’occurrence d’un grand discernement : qu’elle soit gravée dans l’argile ou la cire, qu’elle soit d’encre répandue sur le papyrus, la toile, la peau ou le papier, la parole ne nous abandonne jamais, non plus que son auxiliaire la lettre.

Si l’on veut bien considérer qu’écrire est le propre de l’Homme, contrairement au rire que nous partageons avec l’hyène et le chimpanzé, nous ne nous trouverons d’éventuelle concurrence que chez l’eumolpe et l’escargot. Ces deux-là ont eux aussi l’habitude de produire des lignes d’écriture ou des lettres isolées, celui-ci en bavant son chemin d’argent, celui-là en grignotant les feuilles de la vigne. La question du sens de leur propos, si l’on ose dire, vient d’emblée régler la rivalité qu’ils pourraient éprouver avec le genre humain, l’escargot n’ayant rien à dire, non plus que l’eumolpe ignorant toute ivresse du Verbe durant sa mandibulographie. Ecrire est bien une activité humaine exclusive. Depuis des siècles, femmes et hommes s’y adonnent avec une énergie phénoménale dont musées, bibliothèques et librairies conservent les traces, inégalement impressionnantes, parfois

Quant au caractère « insensé » de ses écrits, ma foi, il est notoire qu’on en vient parfois à parler autrement, à utiliser des voies parallèles, dont certaines rejoignent l’ineptitude. Comme Joyce a atteint Finnegans Wake par exemple. Cependant, nous préfèrerions nommer « métagraphie », soit « graphie des graphies », « l’écriture du néant sans alphabet connu » évoquée par M. Thévoz, pour désigner les enchaînements de lettres aux codes ésotériques dont le sens est tout enfermé dans l’esprit de son créateur, l’artiste, qui acceptera ou non d’en partager les sucs. Elles n’ont du reste pas attendu Charles Nodier. Avec leur sans-gêne coutumier, les artistes investissent naturellement les impossibles en les laissant proliférer partout où l’esprit du signe décèle une aire blanche.

Monocolore et tellurique chez John Ricardo Cunningham, la lettre dessinée souffle l’évanescence souple du cheveu caressé par le vent (Saito) mais elle peut aussi bien allumer le fanal rouge d’un œil prédateur à travers la jungle d’une hargne (Baker), elle se pose sur l’aplat somptueux d’un noir maître d’une éclipse obstinée à gaufrer le papier par la récurrence de ses traits. Le jeune Anton Hirsfeld pratique lui aussi ce palimpseste, avec plus de douceur néanmoins ; il protège sous le pastel le noms des proches qu’il y a préservé, comme on forge l’abri de ceux que l’on aime en leur cousant un gri-gri.

Avec Zdenec Kosec, admettons que les mots « en liberté futuriste » ont opté pour une anarchie assumée depuis un siècle - La lettre a aussi ses papillons. Naviguant dans les milieux artistes, car en milieu à travers l’espace parce que la parole tend

vers son but, les lettres ne craignent pas de parcourir ou même de provoquer les embrouillaminis du discours. Dan Miller semble avoir capté dans un pub l’écheveau des conversations. Ses mots sont à damner un typographe, lequel comprendra bien le goût proliférant de la lettre invasive. Comme la lentille d’eau, les caractères entrelacés de la géographe Jill Gallieni tissent un paysage et l’occupent en jetant à sa surface un chandail topographique que Joseph Lambert, ce géologue, enlumine encore de strates, réclamant notre attention sur le phénomène de sédimentation qu’il met en évidence.

Que nous disent ces « symbioses de la langue, de l’écriture et de l’image » (Maria A. Azzola) ? L’écriture a-alphabétique dont le mystère reste entier, comme le langage zaoum de Russie (Iliazd) dont la poésie est une galopante beauté. Ces œuvres dressées tiennent un discours audelà de nos compétences. Il faut admettre ici que nous mal-comprenons sans doute les cosmogonies très peuplées qui nous assaillent, offre des figures de dessins de presse, de Joseph Hofer ou de Dominique Theate qui fournissent en lettres, selon des méthodes particulières, des portraits, portraits de doubles ou autoportraits… Des caractères s’échappent des cartouches de Hofer qui épellent son sobriquet puis éclatent, laissant les caractères trouver leurs places autour du miroir. Des êtres communiquent par le truchement de leur langue adamique, de leur sabir person-

nel, et dans l’espace d’une utopie parfois aussi chaotique que celle de Patricia Salen, ce sont l’énergie, l’urgence, l’excitation, l’hystérie qui incarnent les stridulations d’un désir fou. Comme il en est de rages, certains artistes ont des désirs pointilleux, des accès de méticulosité. Ils sont les greffiers d’un réel au grain ultra-fin caché à nos yeux. Leurs micrographies tendent à la cryptographie – cette science terrible des alchimistes et des guerriers qui expose le paradoxe linguistique d’individus inquiets tout à la fois d’être compris et de ne pas tout comprendre... Comme les adorateurs de la langue – qui l’épinglent élytre par élytre -, les artistes ont parfois des intuitions d’encyclopédistes. En reprenant la formule forgée par Etiemble dans son cours intitulé Question de poétique comparée (1959-1960), leur « babélien généralisé » s’impose. Tous les graphes alphabétiques, musicaux, symboliques, rituels traduisent le jaillissement du monde dans sa variété qui peut être angoissante. On devine une source émotionnelle primale que l’on ne peut dévier ni refuser. Il est clair que le « déficit sémantique » décelé par Michel Thévoz compte peu dès lors qu’il faut décrire tout, par le menu, exactement. Sans palinodie le geste graphique prime, flottant flux de signes formant paroles peut-être, continuum figé, dès lors supportable et rayonnant. Comme serait une partition musicale à déchiffrer pour saisir toutes les beautés. Cet entrain encyclopédique de Serge Delaunay, d’Os-

Plus qu’en bien des livres, l’art de la lettre est honoré par Dan Miller et Walla qui ont choisi la dactylographie, ou par Anibal Brizuela qui a choisi, lui, d’interpréter manuellement celle-ci dans un jeu-retour, ou par Josome Hodinos dont la république de fantaisie propose ses actes et documents officiels avec toute la majesté requise. Kunizo Matsumoto a posé, lui, ses mots comme des insectes délicats sur une feuille d’agenda frappé de stupeur.

Stoffers pose ses lignes de mots au feutre, contrecollés, comme des unités de cavalerie légère à emporter, déplacer, moduler toujours dans la mobile expression des vocables. On rejoint la perspective des « topographes » qui se voient adjoindre avec Hararld Stoffers les plans de la cité, ou une « song line » évolutive comme celles que chantent les aborigènes décrits par Bruce Chatwin.

Ce souci de transmettre, on le trouve nettement chez les « affichistes » que sont, Giovanni Bosco, Carlo Zinelli, Josep Hofer, Milton Schwartz. Tous maîtrisent parfaitement les codes de l’agit-prop, la scansion des formes essentielles, les couleurs radicales. Certains poussent même la musicalité des formes jusqu’à se glisser dans un psychédélisme enveloppant (Mehrdad Rashidi). Il est frappant par ailleurs que les mots retirés de Pascal Tassini et la puissante façon d’Auguste Walla sont de véritables odes à l’imprimerie, cette déesse qui protège la lettre et ceux qui s’en servent.

Comme le mystère des chants-boussole, il reste une question sans réponse : l’écriture rationnelle trouve-t-elle sa place dans l’art brut ? A-t-elle encore un sens du reste… Interrogée depuis notre entrée en postmodernité, la rationalité du discours connaissait déjà au XVIe siècle les inepties d’un Bernard de Bluet d’Arbères, fou littéraire notoire installé déjà dans les environs de Saint-Germain-des-Près et du Pont-Neuf. Analphabète, usant d’un secrétaire, il manifestait déjà par ses « pronostications » insolentes et sans fondement le fait que l’acte d’écrire n’implique

car Morales ou d’Ozaki Shogo, leur art d’ingénieurs utopistes, qui évoque à s’y méprendre l’encyclopédisme vibrant du Turc Yüksel Arslan, se décline parfois. Il est si riche. Jean Perdrizet, le représentant abouti, pour ne pas dire suprême, d’un certain Génie Civil brille assurément à ce mécano coloré où le monde exulte comme si chaque jour un printemps le nimbait.

Quel ardeur au crayon ! Certains se spécialisent et ne retiennent que le plus frappant. Melvin Way s’arrête aux composés chimiques, Talpazan aux soucoupes volantes. Leur soin pédagogique les pousse à se faire les reporters précis des phénomènes qu’ils observent, ces explorateurs de leur propre environnement. C’est que, comme chez John Devlin préposé aux cadastres imaginaires (avec figures présentes), « Este mundo « nuestro » que se nos va… » (Hilda Dupont Theurel).

Les œuvres rassemblées montrent comment on distinguera l’atone et l’amorphe des énergiques « lignes de foudre » (Florent Chopin). Ici lettres, mots, phrases ou graphes colportés par l’obsession d’artistes dévoués à leurs messages.

Tout l’art brut est traversé par cette grapholalie. Du facteur cheval ornant son château d’adages et de prises à témoin, ou des signes cabalistiques émaillant le texte de telles cartes postales cryptées.

Do the Write Thing en est l’exubérante expression. Les exégètes de Victor Hugo avaient été contraints d’évoquer sa « verbolalie » (Gustave Rudler) et ses écritures

spirites. Ces énigmes des limbes glaciaux rappellent eux-mêmes les textes tracés par les « pieux marmotteurs » copieurs de bibles avant l’invention de la mise en page. Ivan Illitch a évoqué dans Du lisible au visible (1991) ce que l’organisation d’un texte optiquement organisé avait permis de dresser peu à peu des penseurs logiques. Cédant à la grapholalie, les artistes apportent cependant leur propre organisation graphique du discours, on l’a vu avec les « affichistes ». Preuve s’il en fallait que l’organisation comme la répétition sont de leur point de vue une nécessité au moment d’être compris dans leur message essentiel.

Rompant le temps de leur geste répété, avec une fulgurance et une intensité parfois névrotique, ils enregistrent les encéphalogrammes du verbe. Voilà finalement ce qui habite l’acte d’écrire, et pour tout le monde : de l’intensité et du délire. La formulation rejoint l’amphigouri, le discours direct combine le slogan et la glossolalie, le concert nous joue tout à la fois son imbrication d’idiomes, l’irruption de phonèmes, le glissement des concepts, la permutation des périodes, la jonglerie des moments. Babel est ressuscitée sans cesse, et du haut de sa ziggurat de briques graphiques et sonores diffuse le souffle long de l’Humanité. On y entend la perplexité des hommes et leur agacement, leur vie percluse de douleurs et colorée de joies. Entre deux refrains, on entend

aucune cohérence globale du message qui pourrait tout autant être de « points, de lignes horizontales, verticales, obliques, en zig-zag, curvilignes, ondulées et entrecroisées » (M. A. Azzola). De même que les graphomanes sont jugés négativement par la communauté lectrice, l’écriture semble parfois portée par sa seule fonction, non par la nature de ce qu’elle énonce avec sa propre spécificité. Un dérangement des lignes étant nécessaire pour construire un style, une forme qui seraient littéraires ou savants, il apparaît qu’à maintes reprises des phrases miment le discours et s’en contentent. Dès lors les mots qui s’arrangent formellement pour faire « publicité », « roman », « essai », « discours » » rejoignent la langue vaine de ces « éléments de discours » qui sont langue de bois creux.

claironner que le réflexe d’écrire est garantie d’humanité. Une symphonie de lettre et de signes portant mots et maux dont Michel Nedjar a reconnu un cycle essentiel. Le charme du verbe est pour lui si puissant qu’il a recueilli en digne médium les mots essentiels de notre peuple parleur sur un carbone premier : « existence », « sommeil », « mort ». Les lettres nomment là leurs Parques. Le magicien Pepe Gaitan les connaît sans doute lui aussi. En observant les lézardes blanches qui traversent comme rigoles les pages de texte, il est parvenu à rejoindre l’envers des textes, là où se trouve, peut-être, le miroir des âmes. À moins que ne s’y terre l’ange qui annonça à Zebedee Armstrong la date d’Armageddon, provoquant chez lui la construction de cinq cents boîtes destinées à déterminer le calendrier vrai d’Apocalypse. Lettres et chiffres cachent des chausse-trapes, que les manipulateurs de foules conçoivent sans fin et toujours de la même manière nous prévient Orwell dans 1984, comme si l’humanité ne percevait jamais les intentions des dieux, non plus que les avertissements des devins, des inspirés et des artistes. Lorsque le Japonais Yukio Miyashita, grand artiste indubitablement, compose des unes de journaux inspirées de la presse étrangère qu’il interprète, de quelles prémonitions à rebours se fait-il le passeur ? Qu’entrevoitil que nous aurions dû voir ?

À bien entendre les lettres, les mots et les phrases qui bruissent ou hurlent au cœur de cette assemblée vibrante d’aèdes aux langues inconnues ou trop éthérées pour nos sens, on se laisse aborder par le commentaire d’ibn Ezra sur la babélique époque d’après la Genèse : « À cette époque, disait le sage, les paroles d’un savant et celles d’un sot étaient semblables.

Tous usaient des mêmes mots mais nul n’en connaissait la signification. » L’aréopage des artistes réunis pour célébrer l’écriture y parvient si merveilleusement qu’il serait bien maladroit de notre part de ne pas profiter de l’occasion pour tenter de nous comprendre. Mais rien ne presse, nous avons tout le temps. Babel ne s’est pas démolie en un jour.

What happens when meaning hides under a profusion of signs?

When, in writing a drawing or drawing writing, it’s all about speaking, by any means available. With the risk, surely, that this metalanguage will traverse the sky without reaching any target. Making it more obvious than anything else that its author was surely the target.

Unless, unless one of us crosses that path, ready to be moved by this soliloquy, ready to understand, to literally incorporate this semantic surge that resembles the “Babelian drive” that Eric Dussert discusses in our exhibit catalogue. And that person would de facto become the providential recipient of this sibylline surge, not as an exceptional cryptographer, but as someone who could find all of the possibilities for expression within himself. Equally capable of feeling the evocative power of the ideogram, image inseparable from text, like in time immemorial, or of taking joy in the ramblings in which science and poetry saunter. Or even of experiencing the graphorrhea’s little melodies that unfold like mantras.

Rhythm and composition, constantly in tension, seem to want to reveal a new meaning, something primal, like a cry. Besides, since we’re discussing outbursts of voices, shouldn’t we also discuss outbursts of signs? In this way, all glossography would appear not as an inability

This major divergence allowing whomever carries it out to cut across unexplored paths capable of providing new responses to unresolved questions. When it is not only a question of shielding the mystery or the sacred things that could appear there against profane incursions.

What is deafening then, in these palimpsests, these magical cyphers, these vehement imprecations, these sedimented words, these hypnotic iterations, these secret terms, is the formidable plasticity of a primordial language that seems to contain them all.

The Verb is ours. It is, literally, what the Ancients taught us. Satisfied that mankind had created a clever system to carry messages, count goods, mark livestock and record the names of kings, queens and heroes for posterity, they rightly rejoiced, demonstrating as it happens a great amount of discernment: whether it is inscribed in clay or wax, whether it is made of ink dispersed across papyrus, fabric, skin or paper, the word never abandons us, no more than its auxiliary, the letter.

Zebedee ARMSTRONG 1911 - 1993 | Êtats-Unis Armstrong est né à Thomson, dans l’état de Georgie.

Il quitta l’école à l’âge de 14 ans, se maria en 1929 et fut père de deux filles. Il passa le plus clair de sa vie à cueillir le coton de la ferme locale. Après la mort de sa femme en 1969, il travailla comme ouvrier pour la Thomson Box Factory,jusqu’en 1982.

Armstrong was born in Thomson, Georgia. He went to school until eighth grade. He married in 1929 and had two daughters. For much of his life, he worked picking cotton on the local Mack McCormick farm.

After his wife died in 1969, he began to work at the Thomson Box Factory, staying there until 1982.

En 1972, Armstrong déclara avoir reçu la visite d’un ange qui lui annonça que la fin du monde était pour bientôt. Armstrong entama alors la construction de près de 1 500 boîtes calendriers dans le but de déterminer la date prochaine du Jugement Dernier.

Beaucoup de ses calendriers sont réalisés sur des morceaux de bois sur lesquels il peint des horloges et des cadrans recouverts de quadrillages ou de textes précisant la raison d’être de la boîte.

In 1972, he claimed to be visited by an angel who warned him that the end of world was coming soon.

Armstrong went on to construct almost 1,500 box calendars with the aim of trying to determine the exact date of the approaching doomsday. Many of the calendars are made of wood with clocks and dials, painted white and over-layered with grids or with text denoting the box’s purpose.

Beverly BAKER 1911 - | Êtats-Unis Beverly Baker, atteinte du syndrome de Down, crée ses dessins en superposant de manière obsessionnelle des textes trouvés dans une petite sélection de livres et de magazines qu’elle utilise comme matériel de référence. Il est difficile de retrouver trace du langage à la genèse de ses compositions, au final abstraites, car Beverly Baker dessine continuellement sur la même feuille. Elle efface ainsi les mots ou les lettres avec des mots supplémentaires, des lignes et des couleurs. La plupart de ses dessins sont créés au stylo à bille, au crayon de couleur et au marqueur indélébile.

Beverly Baker, who has Down Syndrome, creates drawings through the obsessive layering of text found in a small selection of books and magazines that she uses as reference material. The final abstract compositions generally contain only trace hints (indices indications) of their genesis in language as Baker draws continuously on the same sheet, obliterating her original words or letters with additional words, lines and color. Most of her drawings are created with ballpoint pens, colored pencils and permanent marker.

Giovanni BOSCO 1948 - 2009 | Italie Né en 1948, le sicilien Giovanni Bosco - d’abord berger puis ouvrier dans une carrière de marbre sombra dans la psychose à la suite de l’assassinat de deux de ses frères. L’institution psychiatrique et la prison à laquelle il fut condamné un an à la suite, semble-t-il, d’un vol de bétail, ne lui ôtèrent ni son sourire désarmant, ni la propension à transformer son existence démunie en un acte de poésie pure. À Castellamare del Golfo, ses journées furent alors rythmées par les chansons populaires napolitaines et les peintures d’une inventivité rare qu’il exécutait sur les murs de sa ville ou sur des matériaux de fortune. Corps démembrés ou «surmembrés», serpenteaux et homoncules, cœurs céphaliques, mots et signes scandés dans l’intervalle du dessin, tel est l’alphabet pictural de Giovanni Bosco.

Lorsque son génie est enfin reconnu, il est emporté par un cancer en 2009.

Depuis, des historiens de l’art et autres spécialistes de l’art brut lui ont consacré des journées d’études et des analyses. Un film retraçant les derniers mois de sa vie a été produit par des étudiants qui furent parmi ses derniers véritables amis, tandis qu’un projet de restauration et de conservation de ses fresques est à l’étude.

Born in 1948 in Sicily, Giovanni Bosco was a shepherd until the murder of two of his brothers caused him to develop psychosis. He underwent treatment in a psychiatric hospital for a while and then spent a year in prison, apparently for the theft of some livestock. Yet none of these experiences dimmed his charming smile or his deep-rooted impulse to transform his poverty-stricken life into an act of pure poetry. He spent his days in Castellamare del Golfo listening to traditional Neapolitan songs and producing art of rare imaginative power, painting his works on the walls of the town or whatever came to hand. Giovanni Bosco’s pictorial alphabet consists of dismembered or “over-membered” bodies, tiny snakes, homunculi, and cephalic hearts, punctuated with words and signs. His genius eventually came to light, shortly before he sadly died of cancer in 2009.

Art historians and specialists in Art Brut have since devoted a series of one-day conferences and studies to his work. A group of students – some of his last real friends – made a film recording his last few months, while a project is underway to restore and protect his frescos.

Anibal BRIZUELA 1937 - | Argentine L’histoire d’Aníbal est une véritable énigme ; aucun membre de sa famille n’a jamais cherché à le contacter. Personnage aussi attachant que mystérieux, il semble arpenter depuis toujours sans jamais l’avoir quittée la vaste propriété de l’hôpital psychiatrique Colonia d’Oliveros, à quelques kilomètres de Rosario en Argentine. On suppose qu’il a 74 ans. Si ce petit homme maigre communique peu, il dessine de façon compulsive. Ses œuvres sont des messages qu’il laisse à différents endroits de l’hôpital. « Ce sont ses oracles » affirme sa curatrice.

Pourtant, Anibal n’a jamais répondu à l’invitation de se joindre aux autres patients pour dessiner.

Seulement a-t-il accepté de participer à l’exposition de fin d’année de l’atelier, au salon d’Artebacdès en 2005, puis au musée Macro (2007) où des centaines de ses dessins ont été montrés sur un mur de 7 mètres de long. C’est à l’occasion de cette dernière présentation de son œuvre que Brizuela a écrit : « Un jour, je pêchais au bord de la rivière et j’ai vu une soucoupe volante. (…) J’ai regardé ma canne à pêche et lorsque j’ai relevé les yeux, elle n’était plus là. Je n’y ai pas attaché d’importance. » Les dessins d’Anibal Brizuela, tracés au stylo bille de couleur, évoquent le dazibao. Et ceci n’est pas uniquement dû au fait qu’il les affiche volontiers un peu partout dans l’hôpital où il vit. Chargés de références et symboles mystiques ou politiques, ponctués d’allusions à l’actualité, ses dessins très structurés frappent à la fois par leur caractère sibyllin et leur liberté formelle.

Anibal Brizuela is a touching and enigmatic figure whose past is shrouded in mystery. He seems to have spent his entire life wandering the vast grounds of the Colonia d’Oliveros psychiatric hospital, a few miles from Rosario, Argentina, and no member of his family has ever tried to contact him. He is thought to be seventy-four years old. A small, thin man, he rarely talks; instead, he draws compulsively and leaves his works in various parts of the hospital, like messages. His guardian describes them as “oracles.” Anibal has never taken up the offer to join the other patients in drawing but has agreed, on occasion, to take part in the workshop’s end-ofyear shows. On the occasion of the 2007 exhibition at the Macro Museum, Anibal wrote, “I was fishing one day by the river when I saw a flying saucer. […]

I looked at my fishing rod and when I looked back up, it had vanished. I didn’t think it was important.”

Anibal Brizuela’s drawings, rendered in ballpoint pen, are highly structured, rich in mystical and political references and dominated by symbols that reference current. They are striking in both their sibylline content and the freedom of their formal characteristics.

Fernand DESMOULIN 1853 - 1914 | France Dessinateur et graveur académique très prisé à son époque, ami des célébrités politiques et littéraires, Fernand Desmoulin s’initie, à l’aube de ses cinquante ans, au spiritisme. Entre 1900 et 1902, il produit une œuvre médiumnique personnelle, radicalement différente de son travail antérieur – une œuvre libre et inventive obéissant à des processus créatifs automatiques.

Au travers de sa main, « l’esprit » signa successivement de trois noms différents : « L’Instituteur », « Ton Vieux Maître » et « Astarté ».

Après ces deux années passées au service des esprits, il reprend le chemin de la raison et retourne à sa production académique.

A very popular draghtsman and engraver in his time, a friend of political and literary celebrities, Fernand Desmoulins was introduced to spiritualism at the dawn of his fiftieth year. Between 1900-1902 he produced mediumistic work that radically differed from his previous creations – free and inventive drawings obeying automatic creative processes.

The “spirit” signed these drawings under three different names: “The Teacher”, “Your Old Master” and “Astarte”.

After two years in the service of spirits, he took the path of reason and returned to his academic production.

John DEVLIN 1954 - | Canada John Devlin est né en 1954 à Halifax, capitale de la province canadienne de la Nouvelle-Ecosse. À 25 ans, il part étudier la théologie au Collège StEdmond, de l’Université de Cambridge. C’est là qu’il est atteint d’une grave dépression, première d’une série d’épisodes psychotiques, qui l’oblige à retourner dans sa ville natale pour y être hospitalisé.

Pendant sa longue convalescence, il est obsédé par l’idée de retrouver l’essence même de Cambridge qu’il considère comme la ville idéale.

Il consacre alors les 10 années suivantes à produire des centaines de dessins, études et autres plans d’une ville imaginaire et utopique, baptisée Nova Cantabrigiensis, qu’il situe sur une île au cœur du bassin des Mines en Nouvelle Ecosse.

Ses esquisses réinventent les bâtiments et les jardins ornementaux de la ville médiévale qui devait le mener à la prêtrise. Toutes sont codées par des symboles, des formules que lui seul comprend. « Ma théorie, dit-il, c’est que pour un design idéal, il y a un ratio idéal. J’ai recherché une telle constante.

J’étais dans une quête faustienne pour découvrir les arcanes de l’ambiance magique de Cambridge. Je pensais que si je pouvais capturer cette ambiance, je n’aurais pas à aller en Angleterre. Je pensais que je trouverais le moyen de sortir de la maladie mentale en revivant les moments heureux vécus à Cambridge… Avant que les choses s’effondrent en moi. » John Devlin est notamment obsédé par le ratio 3:7, rapport entre le nombre de voyelles et de consonnes dans « Jésu Christ ». Il ira jusqu’à se l’inscrire sur ses ongles des pieds.

Après être resté chez ses parents, reclus, de nombreuses années, John a rejoint une maison communautaire en 1989 à Dartmouth où il vit toujours.

John Devlin was born in 1954 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the age of 25, he left to read theology at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge. There he suffered a severe breakdown, the first of a series of psychotic episodes that forced him to return to his hometown to be hospitalized. Over the course of a long convalescence, he was obsessed by the idea of reproducing the very essence of Cambridge, which he considered an ideal town.

He spent decades after that making hundreds of drawings, studies and maps of an imaginary, utopian town that he named Nova Cantabrigiensis, New Cambridge, located on an island in Nova Scotia’s Minas Basin.

His sketches recreate the buildings and ornamental gardens of the medieval town where he had planned to become a priest. All of them are coded with symbols and formulae that only he understands. “My theory,” he says, “is that for ideal design, there is an Ideal Ratio. I have been hunting for such a constant.

I was on a Faustian quest, for arcane knowledge that would explain the magical ambience of Cambridge.

I thought that if I could capture that ambience as a mathematical formula, then I wouldn’t have to go to England. I thought I could think my way out of mental illness back into the happy times in Cambridge … before things began to fall apart on me.” One of Devlin’s main obsessions is the ratio of 3:7, the relationship between the number of vowels and consonants in “Jesu Christ”; he has even marked his toenails with it. He is convinced that all objects that are not constituted according to this perfect ratio are flawed, and by correcting them, he will be able to prevent illness and death.

After a lengthy, reclusive stay at his family home, in 1989 Devlin moved into a group home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where he continues to live.

Jose Manuel EGEA 1988 - | Espagne Né à Madrid en 1988, José Manuel Egea est un adepte, depuis l’âge de 10 ans, des super héros des Marvel Comics, et tout particulièrement de Jack Russel le loup garou et de Hulk, le géant vert qu’il se plaît à imiter. La transformation de l’homme en bête, d’être humain en créature puissante, terrible et indestructible le fascine. Elle est au centre de tout sa création produite, depuis 2010, au sein du centre de création « debajo del sombrero » (sous le chapeau) qui accueille des personnes présentant des déficiences intellectuelles.

Egea n’a pas de difficulté à se connecter à « la part de loup » - comme il l’appelle - qui réside dans l’apparence de tout individu. Il la connaît bien grâce à ses crises au cours desquelles il a besoin de hurler pour se calmer et de déchirer toute sorte de chose, tout spécialement ses vêtements.

Un large pan de son travail consiste à modifier des photographies choisies dans des magazines qu’il crayonne au stylo bille jusqu’à ce que le portrait, enterré sous la noirceur de l’encre, disparaisse, pour céder la place au monstre. Son stylo invoque l’animal qui réside dans le sujet du portrait et qui lutte pour émerger.

Une série de mots ou de phrases qu’il répète mystérieusement l’attirent particulièrement : androgyne, la naissance, la transformation, sacristie, étant né nu, cordon ombilical, le mannequin, la plage, il devient moitié homme moitié loup, hypertrichose, restant noir pour toujours, homidés - il semble que ce dernier mot l’effraie beaucoup..

José Manuel Egea is a great supporter, since the age of 10, of Marvel Comics superheroes, and more particularly of Jack Russel, the werewolf.

The transformation of the human being into the beast, from human kind to a powerful and terrible creature, fascinates him.

Most of the time, he composes using characters found in magazines that he transforms in wolf, covering the image with ballpoint pen until they disappear, making way for the monster.

In observing the images closely, we see that the direction and the intensity of the stroke of the pen or marker is fundamental for provoking the emergence of the beast. Egea does not settle for covering the image in black. Rather, it is about invoking the animal that lies within the subject of the portrait and that struggles to get out. The lines are made in the direction that the hair flows from the face. The lines are made with great amounts of force, leaving a trace in the battered paper. Transcending its apparent smoothness, transforming it, as well.

For Egea, it is not difficult to connect with the wolfness – as he himself calls it – that resides beneath the appearance of people. He knows it well, thanks to his own fits during which his need to howl in order to calm himself down and his passion for tearing up all sorts of things, especially his clothes, manifest themselves.

There is also a series of words or phrases that attract him and that he mysteriously repeats while drawing: androgynous, birth, transformation, machistar (‘to make macho’), attaching wolfness to an adolescent he becomes half man half wolf, remaining black forever, homonids – it seems that homonids scare him very much.

Johann FISCHER 1919 - 2008 | Autriche Né en 1919 à Eggendorf am Wagram (BasseAutriche), Johann est apprenti maître-boulanger avant d’être mobilisé durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et est constitué prisonnier par les Américains. À sa libération, il prend la suite de son père à la tête du domaine agricole familial. Souffrant dès 1957 de troubles hallucinatoires, il est interné en clinique psychiatrique. En 1981, il intègre la Maison des Artistes et commence son impressionnante production.

Fischer, mort en 2008, n’utilisait que le crayon et les crayons de couleur. Sa palette, tout d’abord composée de tons de gris et de bruns, s’est élargie considérablement à l’aube des années 90. Les sujets plutôt simples des débuts se sont complexifiés progressivement pour aboutir à des histoires illustrées dans lesquelles le réel et l’imaginaire se côtoient constamment. Courtois, méthodique, Johann dessinait tous les matins et faisait suivre sa signature de sa qualité : Künstler ! (Artiste !).

Durant de longues années, il a formé, avec Walla, Hauser et Tschirtner, le quatuor de tête des artistes de Gugging. Tandis que nombreux articles lui sont consacrés, ses créations figurent dans les plus grandes collections d’art brut au monde dont celle de David Bowie.

Born in 1919 in Eggendorf am Wagram (Lower Austria), Johann was the apprentice for a masterbaker before being recruited during the Second World War and taken prisoner by the Americans. At his liberation, he followed in his father’s footsteps at the head of the family farm, suffering, however, from hallucinations starting in 1957, he was committed to a psychiatric clinic. In 1981, he joined the Haus der Künstler and began his impressive production.

Fischer, who died in 2008, only used pencil and color pencils. His palette, at first composed of gray and brown tones, grew considerably at the beginning of the 1990s. The rather simple subjects of his beginnings became progressively complex, leading to illustrated stories in which the real and the imaginary constantly intermingle. Courteous, methodical, Johann drew every morning and followed his signature with his occupation: Künstler ! (Artist!). For many years, he was, with Walla, Hauser and Tschirtner, one of the four leading artists of the Gugging. With numerous articles dedicated to him, his creations appear in the world’s greatest collections of Art Brut, including David Bowie’s.

Pépé GAITAN 1959 - | Colombie Pepe Gaitán est issu d’une famille bourgeoise. Son père décède quand il est très jeune. Sa mère qui vit toujours, le reçoit chaque samedi au petit déjeuner pour qu’il lui lise les journaux.

Pepe Gaitán comes from a bourgeois family. His father died when he was very young. His mother is still alive, and has him over every saturday for breakfast so that he can read her the newspaper.

Il suit des études de communication sociale et s’intéresse particulièrement à la radio. Il est un temps professeur. En 1975, la curieuse expression « ne mange pas tant de sucreries, si tu ne veux pas attraper des amibes » semble être déclencheur d’un tournant dans sa vie. C’est en effet à partir de ce moment qu’il commence son œuvre. Il passe ses journées dans des bibliothèques, sélectionne avec minutie des textes, les photocopie puis intervient d’abord en rayant la plupart des lettres, puis transforme la page en lui ajoutant des collages et des signes en utilisant une gamme chromatique très choisie. Les échos de formes qui font penser à une codification confèrent à ces œuvres une force géométrique saisissante. Chaque page cache des amibes qu’il nomme pseudopodes.

He pursued his studies in social communication and was a professor for a while. He was particularly interested in radio. In 1975, the curious expression “Don’t eat so many sweets if you don’t want to catch amoebas” seemed to be the catalyst for a turning point in his life. It was indeed after this moment that he began his work. He spent his days in libraries, picked texts meticulously, photocopied them and then added his touch, first by crossing out most of the letters, then transforming the page by adding collages and signs always with a very particular chromatic range. The echoes of forms that recall a sort of codification give these works a striking geometric force. Each page hides amoebas that he calls pseudopods.

Yoshiyasu HIRANO 1980 - | Japon Yoshiyasu Hirano fréquente l’atelier Yellow (Izumisano, Osaka) depuis son ouverture en 2008.

Il a longtemps oscillé entre deux type de dessins ; l’un caractérisé par des compositions dynamiques aux éléments soulignés par d’épaisses lignes noires ; l’autre remarquable par ses lignes uniformes tirées à la règle et au stylo de couleur. Mais sa série la plus récente consiste en des lignes de mots soigneusement recopiés de journaux et de magazines. Affranchis de tout stéréotype, les dessins de Yoshiyasu Hirano ont trouvé leur espace de liberté.

Yoshiyasu Hirano (born 1980) has been making artworks at Yellow (Izumisano, Osaka) since it was founded in 2008.

He has two series of animal drawings; one series characterized by dynamic compositions and thick black lines accenting the drawings, and another series characterized by uniform lines created with a ruler and color gel pens. His most recent series is word drawings, where he carefully draws words taken from newspapers and magazines. Hirano’s flat drawings of words have a great sense of liberation, being free from existing stereotypes.

Jill GALLIENI 1948 - | France Née en 1948 d’une mère américaine et d’un père comédien, Jill Galliéni est élevée loin de ses parents avant que son père ne la prenne en charge à sept ans. Depuis toujours, elle crée, à Paris, d’étranges poupées de tissus et, vers l’âge de 30 ans, les prières l’aident à se reconstruire, à chercher comment se sortir d’inextricables situations mentales qui l’empêchaient de vivre. Elle aurait d’abord voulu « dire » par des mots, mais voir une phrase écrite par elle lui était absolument insupportable. Alors, elle a inventé les phrases de prières, toujours les mêmes, des centaines de fois répétées, guirlandes de prières très serrées afin que le sens échappe à tous. Adressées à Sainte-Rita, patronne des causes désespérées, Jill « traite » par ces prières des situations, des personnes, elle-même, ect.

Simili d’écriture ou écritures superposées les unes aux autres, c’est selon, l’encre noire ou de couleur emplit feuilles volantes et cahiers ; libérée de toute convention, l’écriture évolue dans différents sens, obéissant à une rythmique propre, suivant des courbes, des diagonales, dessinant, tels des calligrammes, fleurs, maisons, cœurs, ou d’autres formes parfois abstraites. Ces textes saisissants ont récemment été accueillis dans les collections du Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut de Lille.

Jill Galliéni was born in 1948 to an American mother and a French father, and has always lived in Paris.

Her father was an actor. She was brought up by guardians until the age of seven, when her father took over her care. She began creating her strange fabric dolls at a very early age. She turned to prayer towards the age of thirty as a way of helping her to rebuild her life and free herself from the vicious mental traps that were stopping her from living her life to the full. She initially wanted to “speak” through the medium of words, but, finding it unbearable to see sentences written in her own hand, she invented sentences from prayers – always the same, repeated hundreds of times. These formed tightly bundled garlands so that the meaning of the prayer would remain a mystery. The prayers are addressed to Saint Rita, patron saint of lost causes, and refer to situations, people, her own circumstances, and so on. They feature imitations of the written word or superimposed layers of writing in black or coloured ink, covering loose sheets of paper and notebooks.

Thus freed from the constraints of convention, the writing roams in different directions, following its own rhythm, forming curves and diagonals and creating calligram flowers, houses, hearts, and abstract shapes. Her striking texts – including a rare notebook presented at the Histoire(s) de carnet exhibition at Drawing Now Paris in 2010 – have recently been acquired by the Lille Métropole Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Art brut.

Anton HIRSCHFELD 1992 - | France Anton Hirschfeld, né à Paris en 1992, commence à peindre l’année de ses 16 ans, encouragé par la professeur d’art du centre d’accueil thérapeutique pour adolescents qu’il fréquente. Jusque là, personne dans son entourage n’avait encore décelé son talent, bien qu’il ait compté des artistes dans sa famille. Ce fut une révélation même pour ses parents, pourtant très impliqués dans son éducation.

Fasciné par les reflets, Anton trouve l’inspiration de ses premières peintures dans les fenêtres des trains, qu’il pouvait regarder pendant de heures dans les gares parisiennes. Bien que la plupart de ses peintures tendent vers l’abstraction, il est capable de saisir une ressemblance dans un portrait, y compris ses autoportraits, et s’inspire souvent des photos de paysages urbains, New York en particulier.

Anton travaille en écoutant de la musique ; l’impact des mélodies et des rythmes sur sa peinture est manifeste.

Il aime peindre des triptyques et travailler en transparence, par couches superposées, en utilisant de manière inattendue l’acrylique, le pastel et l’encre. Il a un sens inné, profond, de l’harmonie, des couleurs et de la composition, qu’il relève souvent par un accent ou un contraste. Anton Hirschfeld was born in Paris on June 22, 1992.

He began painting when he was sixteen, thanks to the sensitivity and skill of an art teacher in a center for teenagers with special needs. Up until that point, no one had suspected this talent, despite a family history of artists, and parents who were very committed to his education from early childhood.

Fascinated by reflections of all kinds, his first paintings were inspired by train windows, which he could spend hours watching in the railway stations of Paris. Although most of his painting tends towards abstraction, he is capable of capturing a likeness in a portrait, including his own, and he often draws inspiration from photos of cities, particularly New York. As a rule he works listening to music and the impact of melodies and rhythms is unmistakable.

Frequently he paints triptychs, using many transparent layers, and making inventive use of acrylic, pastel and ink. He appears to have an innate sense of colour harmony and composition, often adding an unexpected accent or contrast.

Increasingly, Anton begins work by making handwritten lists, mostly of people who will attend social events that matter so much to him, which he then covers over, leaving a trace, an inner life to his paintings.

Émile Josome HODINOS 1853 - 1905 | France Joseph Ernest Ménétrier est né à Paris de parents boulangers. À la mort de son père l’enfant de huit ans est placé en pension. Adolescent, il débute en 1869 un apprentissage à l’atelier Tasset, graveur officiel des médailles de la Troisième République. Il prend alors des cours de dessin et de modelage aux Beaux-Arts mais sept ans plus tard il doit mettre fin à toutes ses activités et est interné pour « excitation maniaque » à l’hôpital psychiatrique de Ville-Evrard où il demeura jusqu’à sa mort, en 1905. C’est lors de son internement qu’il choisit de se faire appeler Emile Josome Hodinos, du grec hodinos fils de personne.

Après quelques années, il commence à dessiner à la mine de plomb et à l’encre de chine de minutieuses médailles où les détails sont aussi travaillés que les inscriptions manuscrites qui structurent ses medalia. Privé de ses outils de médailleur, Hodinos dessine au crayon sur des papiers d’emballage de biscuits et utilise des lanières de papier pour remplacer le compas. La forme écrite et narrative est très présente dans le travail de Josome Hodinos qui lui donne un statut presque équivalent à celui d’un journal en encadrant ses médailles de contes personnels, relatant aussi bien son enfance que les conditions de vie à l’asile en passant par ses opinions artistiques et politiques. Cependant sa production littéraire s’étend au-delà de ses dessins puisque nous lui devons aussi la rédaction de deux manuels : un dictionnaire politique et L’Histoire des Etats européens de 1453 à 1789.

Découvert par Jean Dubuffet, Emile Josome Hodinos est aujourd’hui considéré comme l’un des classiques de l’art brut et fait partie de grandes collections dont celle de L’Art Brut de Lausanne.

Joseph Ernest Ménétrier was born in Paris to baker parents. His father died when the boy was eight; the latter was then placed in a boarding school. In 1869 he entered into an apprenticeship with the engraver of the third republic medals. In addition, for four years he took drawing and modelling courses at an art school. Abruptly, his life turned upside down and he was admitted to the Ville-Evrard asylum, where he would stay until he died. He changed his identity then and adopted the pseudonym Emile Josome Hodinos. He passed his time at the hospital drawing innumerable plans for medals in graphite and India ink on which he made meticulous comments in handwritten texts signed with his assumed name.

As support material he used sheets of the paper used in biscuit-making. Strips of paper served as compasses or dividers to calculate the dimensions of his figurines, essentially female, whose anatomy he exaggerated. He would then encircle them with an outline, obtaining the effect of a medal. He also wrote two books : a politic dictionary and The history of European States between 1453 and 1789.

Nowadays Josome Hodinos is considered as a classic of Art Brut, as he has been discovered by Jean Dubuffet, and his work is currently find in the greatest collections as Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne.

Josef HOFER 1945 - | Autriche Josef Hofer ne parle pas. En revanche, il s’exprime inlassablement par le dessin. Né en 1945, il est élevé reclus dans une ferme en Haute-Autriche car souffrant tout comme son frère d’un retard mental, de difficultés d’audition et d’élocution auxquels s’ajoute, pour Josef, une mobilité réduite, le père a souhaité soustraire ses fils aux moqueries de l’entourage et surtout aux traitements qu’auraient pu leur infliger les occupants nazis puis soviétiques.

A la mort du père, en 1982, la mère part vivre avec ses fils à Kirschlag, donnant à Josef l’occasion de contacts sociaux, ainsi que la possibilité de fréquenter un hôpital de jour. Ces changements s’avèrent bénéfiques: Josef prononce même quelques mots. Par la suite, il est pensionnaire d’une institution à Ried, où Elisabeth Telsnig repère son goût pour le dessin et encourage sa créativité.

Josef Hofer might not speak, but he draws constantly. He was born in 1945 and spent his early life on a farm in Upper Austria. The family lived in isolation since Josef and his brother both suffered from learning difficulties and hearing and speech problems – Joseph also had impaired mobility – and his father wished to spare them from being teased by the locals and, more importantly, to protect them from the Nazis and, later, the Soviets. When Josef’s father died in 1982, his mother took him and his brother to live in Kirschlag, giving him the chance for some social contact and the opportunity to attend a day clinic. These changes proved beneficial, and Josef even spoke a few words. He later became an inpatient at an institution in Ried, where Elisabeth Telsnig spotted his love of drawing and encouraged his creativity.

Pepi, as he signs his works, observed and narrated his own life. His works are a mirror reflecting himself and the spectator and revealing the hypnotic infancy of art. As Michel Thévoz writes, “Josef Hofer is in a state of grace” – an erotic, untrammelled form of grace where the body strives to break free from the prison of the frame. The sensual, raw nudity shines through the confident, unpolished lines in warm hues.

Depuis la rétrospective que lui a organisée la Collection de l’Art Brut en 2003, de nombreuses expositions et publications lui ont été consacrées. Ses dessins font désormais partie des plus grandes collections d’art brut au monde. Fait unique, la Collection de l’Art Brut lui a à nouveau dédié une rétrospective en 2011 à Lausanne, doublée cette fois-ci de la publication d’une importante monographie.

Numerous exhibitions and publications have been devoted to Josef’s art since the retrospective held by the Collection de l’Art Brut in 2003. His drawings are now featured in all the major Art Brut collections world-wide. He is also the first artist to have a second retrospective devoted to his work at the Collection de l’Art Brut, accompanied by a major book-length study.

John Urho KEMP 1942 - 2010 | États-Unis John Urho Kemp obtint une licence en génie chimique et biochimique à l’université de Berkley Californie - en 1965.

Il travailla comme ingénieur chimiste pendant presque deux ans, puis démissionna pour étudier la Scientologie en Angleterre et à Los Angeles jusqu’en 1971. Pendant les dix années suivantes, il fit tourner un magasin d’antiquités à Los Angeles. Entre autres activités parallèles, il parcourut le monde pour assister à des éclipses solaires et devint un habitué des sources thermales du nord de la Californie. Tout au long de sa vie, John a cherché la révélation à travers la méditation, la métaphysique, les formules mathématiques et les nombres tirés de sa propre histoire qu’il consignait dans un premier temps, au crayon et au stylo, sur des papiers brouillons. La plupart de ses travaux étaient affinés, compilés et mis en forme avant d’être photocopiés pour être distribués et partagés avec le plus grand nombre.

Des archives en ligne de ses travaux - poèmes, équations, dessins et collages de 1979 à 2000 sont en cours d’élaboration.

L’on doit le sauvetage et l’archivage de son grand œuvre à son ami le photographe Aram Muksian, soit des milliers de pages, diagrammes, schémas et séquences de chiffres, allant jusqu’à coloniser des liasses interminables de papier d’imprimante à aiguille.

Daniel Baumann - commissaire, critique d’art et actuel directeur de la Kunsthalle de Zürich ainsi que de la Fondation Wölfli à Berne - lui a consacré une exposition au 548 Center à NY en 2014.

John Urho Kemp graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965 with a degree in chemical engineering and biochemistry. He worked as a chemical engineer for almost two years, then quit to study Scientology in England and Los Angeles until 1971. He spent the next decade operating an antiques business in Los Angeles. Amongst other interests, he traveled the world to witness solar eclipses and frequented hot springs of Northern California. Throughout his life he sought revelations through meditation, metaphysics, formulas, and numbers, recorded primarily in pencil and pen on the blank surfaces of scrap papers.

Much of his work was refined and compiled into compact documents that were then photocopied and leafletted as a means of sharing his findings with as many people as he could. An online archive of his work is underway, and includes poems, equations, drawings, and collages from 1979-2010.

We owe the rescue and archiving of his numerous works to his friend, the photographer Aram Muksian, namely thousands of pages, diagrams, sketches and numerical sequences, to the point of colonizing endless bundles of dot-matrix printer paper.

Daniel Baumann – commissioner, art critic and current director of the Kunsthalle of Zürich as well as of the Wölfli Foundation in Berne – dedicated an exhibit to him at the 548 Center in NY in 2014.

Mikhaël KALIAKINE 1910 - 1980 | Russie Nous ne possédons aucun renseignement concernant cet auteur qui serait né vers 1910 et mort vers 1980. Johann KOREC 1937 - 2008 | Autriche Né à Vienne en 1937, Korec, après avoir passé son enfance dans des foyers pour enfants et avoir fréquenté des écoles spécialisées, travailla dès l’âge de 14 ans comme valet de ferme et gardien de troupeau. Il rêvait de devenir dompteur dans un cirque. En 1958, il fut interné à Gugging et, alors qu’il dessinait depuis les années 60, rejoignit la Maison des artistes en 1981.

Copiant d’abord, à sa manière, des illustrations de journaux, ses œuvres – réalisées à l’encre de chine et à l’aquarelle - devinrent plus personnelles : les scènes érotiques, typiques de son travail, sont décrites et commentées à la manière d’un journal intime illustré.

Johann Korec grows up in institutions for homeless youths. After attending a school for retarded children, he works as a laborer at a farmstead. He is committed to Gugging mental hospital in 1958.

Since 1981, he lives and works there in the « house for artists. » He had already begun working artistically in the 1960s. Based on copies of illustrations that appeared in newspapers, and over several years time, he develops an independent painting technique of his own. His ink and aquarelle pictures primarily depict loving couples and erotic scenes, which can be interpreted as an illustrated diary.

Zdenek KOŠEK 1949 - 2015 | République tchèque Zdenek Košek a d’abord été typographe et caricaturiste pour des magazines et des journaux régionaux. Artiste autodidacte, il a commencé à produire une peinture de facture plutôt conventionnelle. Dans les années 80 il subit un grave traumatisme dont les conséquences psychiques sont irrévocables. Diagnostiqué psychotique il est mis à la retraite en 1989. Dès lors il va produire une œuvre radicalement différente de ses peintures antérieures. Košek était persuadé qu’il jouait un rôle déterminant au sein de la grande ordonnance du monde dont le temps météorologique est le vecteur. « J’étais le maître du monde et j’avais l’énorme responsabilité de résoudre tous les problèmes de l’humanité. Si je ne les résolvais pas, qui d’autre le ferait ? » Il se voyait comme une sorte de centrale recevant et émettant sans cesse des multitudes d’informations et pensait devoir maîtriser les problèmes météorologiques. « Je ne maîtrisais pas seulement le temps mais aussi la politique, j’ai nommé Vaclav Havel président de la République. [...] Je me croyais immortel ».

Il passait ses journées devant la fenêtre de son HLM afin de contrôler le temps - direction des vents, vol d’oiseaux, bruits, changements de température, pensées - et dessinait sur des cahiers d’écolier, sur des cartes d’atlas ou dans de vieux magazines. Ses diagrammes sont un rituel dicté, indispensable, auquel il doit se soumettre au risque d’être responsable d’un chaos irréversible. En collant ses diagrammes contre les vitres de son appartement, il communiquait aussi avec les oiseaux, qui étaient pour lui des êtres supérieurs aux hommes.

Zdenek Košek worked as a typographer and drew caricatures and satirical cartoons for regional magazines and newspapers. A self-taught artist, he has also produced a number of more or less conventional paintings. In the 1980s a deep psychological trauma gradually changed his perception of the world; he was diagnosed as psychotic and had to retire in 1989. From then on he would produce a work radically different from his previous paintings.

Meteorology and weather are the main themes of his works on paper. Košek was convinced that he played a determining role at heart of the great ruling of the world. He saw himself as a kind of power station, continuously receiving and emitting multitudes of information. He thought that his duty was to master the meteorological phenomena. «I mastered not only the time but also politics, I named Vaclav Havel president. [...] I thought I was immortal».

He spent his days in front of the window, convinced that he could provoke or control the weather, writing down everything that was happening around him : the direction of the wind, the flight of the birds, sounds, the changes on temperature, different combinations of numbers, letters and chemical elements, etc. He would draw on notebooks, maps, atlas or old magazines. His diagrams served him as a direct means to influence weather - an indispensable ritual dictated to him, to which he abandoned himself in order to avoid his biggest fear, the irreversible chaos. By sticking his schemes onto the window of his apartment, he communicated with birds, which he believed to be superior to man.

Joseph LAMBERT 1950 - | Belgique Joseph Lambert passe ses journées à La « S » Grand Atelier* à écrire, tricoter des « mots », des signes compris de lui seul qui s’accrochent les uns aux autres pour former une phrase visuelle, qui forme une strate, une couche géologique dans la glaise du texte comme si le paysage s’arpentait tout en s’enroulant, en son tortillon. Joseph Lambert spent his days in the ‘S’ Grand Atelier writing, knitting “words,” signs understood by only him and attached to each other to form visual sentences, which form a stratum, a geological layer in the heart of the text as if the landscape stretched out all the while rolling itself up, in a twist.

Kunizo MATSUMOTO 1962 - | Japon Vivant à Osaka, Kunizo Matsumoto est en charge de la vaisselle dans le restaurant familial. Il collectionne d’une manière compulsive toutes sortes d’imprimés (brochures du théâtre kabuki, catalogues d’expositions, guides, etc.), dont sa chambre est pleine et auxquels personne n’a le droit de toucher. Analphabète, il a créé sa propre langue. Parfois, il recopie des passages de pièces de kabuki. Une fois la page noircie, il lui arrive de continuer à écrire dans l’air, la danse prenant ainsi le relais en une chorégraphie imaginaire. Le soir, quand tous les membres de sa famille sont couchés, il écrit sur le calendrier du restaurant ou remplit des cahiers dans sa chambre.

Kunizo Matsumoto is in charge of the dishes in the family restaurant in Osaka. He obsessively collects a variety of printed brochures of Kabuki theater, exhibition catalogues, guides, etc. His room is filled up with these objects and no one has the right to touch them. He can neither read nor write, yet in 1985, he began to create his own ideograms.

Sometimes he copies passages from Kabuki plays.

Once the sheet is blackened, he continues “writing” in the air, creating an imaginary dance choreography.

In the evening, when all family members are asleep, he writes on the restaurant calender or in the notebooks in his room.

The force of Malcolm McKesson’s work – transgressive, liberated, born of an exalted urge – invites the subjugated viewer to contemplate an impression of the uncanny. The artist lays bare part of what is buried deep, guiding us to the heart of our own familiar terra incognita.

Drôle de parcours que celui de cet homme qui, la quarantaine venue, se retire du monde professionnel.

Issu d’une famille New-Yorkaise plutôt aisée, diplômé d’Harvard, il travaille vingt ans durant dans l’entreprise chimique familiale jusqu’à ce que, avec le soutien de sa femme, la poète Madeline Mason, il décide de se consacrer pleinement à sa création.

Dès lors, il n’a de cesse de noircir des feuilles de papier au stylo bille. Travaillant les formes comme s’il les sculptait, une multitude de traits confère progressivement volume et consistance à des créatures imaginaires, puis, par un jeu de clairobscur, un être, une ombre se révèle, présence grave, tant pléthorique que fantomatique. Malcolm McKesson came to art by an unusual path.

Born to a well-heeled New York family, he graduated from Harvard and worked for the family chemical company for twenty years before withdrawing from professional life in his forties. With the support of his wife, the poet Madeline Mason, he decided to devote himself to his art. He began covering sheets of paper with a ball-point pen, working on the shapes as if sculpting them, until the multitude of lines gradually lent volume and consistency to his imaginary creatures. Eventually, the play of chiaroscuro revealed a shadowy, serious presence, as generous as it was ghostly. McKesson used this imaginary world to explore his own sadomasochistic fantasies, using it as the artistic counterpart to his short story Matriarchy : Freedom in Bondage. The drawings are characterised by violent, sensual eroticism, the ample figures of the characters fully fleshing out their carnality. Yet these fundamentally androgynous creatures question the difference between the genders, blurring socially accepted codes and conceptions. Malcolm McKesson’s fascinating, lascivious, spectral art has been acquired by major Art Brut collections such as the Collection de l’Art Brut (Lausanne) and The Museum of Everything (London).

Dan MILLER 1961 - | États-Unis La création acharnée de Dan Miller, qui superpose des couches considérables d’écriture jusqu’à l’illisible, a tant fasciné le public qu’outrepassant la sphère de l’outsider art, elle est entrée dans les collections permanentes du MOMA, à New-York. Bien que cette œuvre soit formellement très contemporaine, entrant notamment en résonance avec le travail de Pollock et de Cy Twombly, c’est néanmoins hors du débat artistique que Miller invente ses modes d’expression.

Dan Miller’s tireless creativity in superimposing considerable layers of writing to the point of illegibility has proved such a source of fascination for audiences that his art has now reached beyond the sphere of Art Brut to enter the permanent collection at MoMA in New York. While his work is highly contemporary in formal terms, with notable echoes of Pollock and Cy Twombly, Miller nonetheless invents his modes of expression outside the boundaries of mainstream artistic debate.

Noires et blanches ou de couleurs, ces créations portent en elles un dynamisme rare qui semble raviver - au-delà du cryptage lexical que provoque l’accumulation - le corps de la lettre, la force expressive des mots.

Dan Miller, born in Castro Valley in 1961, is autistic. He has been attending the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California, for over fifteen years, giving entirely unfettered reign to his inventive imagination. He is obsessed with household objects such as light bulbs and electric sockets, the names of towns and cities, people, numbers, and foodstuffs. He pours his inner world onto the paper, intensely repeating its key signifiers in paint, pen, pencil, and felt tip. The various media intertwine and pile up like the words themselves to create subtle strata of undeniable pictorial power. His works – in black and white or colour – reveal a rare dynamic force that seems to breathe new life into the body of the letters and the expressive power of words, above and beyond the lexical encryption caused by their accumulation.

Dan Miller a été montré à deux reprises à la Maison rouge en 2014 dans les expositions : Le Mur, oeuvres de la collection Antoine de Galbert et art brut, collection abcd/Bruno Decharme. Il a fait partie de la sélection officielle de Christine Macel, curatrice de l’exposition « Viva Arte Viva » à la biennale de Venise 2017.

Yukio Miyashita loves data management. The type of data he is interested in varies greatly – the scores of the professional baseball teams, attendance records of the care workers, bus time table, etc. He treasures his calculator and organizer. His earnest character reflects on his artworks. One of the distinctive features of Yukio Miyashita’s drawing style is a motif of tiny squares that he meticulously colors. It can take him a year to finish a piece.

Another characteristic feature of his work is copying letters from English newspapers, although it seems to be more of a task than an artistic creation to him.

Oscar MORALES 1951 - | Chili Óscar Morales Martínez est né en 1951 à Copiapo, au nord du Chili, au sein d’une famille humble. Son père, était chauffeur dans la Société nationale des mines tandis que sa mère élevait leurs 6 enfants. Óscar, comme ses frères, a grandi dans les rues poussiéreuses de sa ville. Il a pourtant suivi des études primaires et secondaires et depuis l’enfance a manifesté un vif intérêt pour la littérature et les arts. À 17 ans, Óscar est parti faire un service militaire de 3 ans à l’issu duquel il a manifesté de premiers symptômes apparents de schizophrénie paranoïde.

Entre 1975 et 1995, il a été interné à plusieurs reprises en hôpital psychiatrique avant de retourner dans sa ville natale. Là, compte tenu de la complexité de sa maladie, Óscar est à nouveau hospitalisé, durablement : « C’était le dernier espoir de salut », dit-il.

Alors qu’il était alité, il se souvient avoir commencé à dessiner « dans le ciel » de sa chambre. En 1999, Óscar met au point sa célèbre « Formule de Valence alphabétique et numérique » à partir de laquelle il crée des machines et dessine de manière compulsive des cellules, des noyaux, des atomes et des radios, sur des ordinateurs portables, des couvertures de livre et des feuilles de dessin de différentes tailles. « Je pensais créer quelque chose de noble qui servirait à tout le monde. Cette formule mathématique est d’un haut niveau. Je l’ai inventée pour améliorer et accroître la capacité de l’ordinateur », explique-t-il.

Depuis 10 ans, Óscar vit dans le foyer d’un l’hôpital psychiatrique avec six autres patients chroniques.Il participe à divers ateliers : peinture, littérature, radio et informatique.

Óscar Morales Martinez was born into a modest family in Copiapó, in northern Chile. His father worked as a driver for the national mining company while his mother raised their six children. Like his brothers, he grew up in the town’s dusty streets, nevertheless completing both primary and high school. From an early age, he showed great interest in literature and the arts.

At the age of 17, Morales served his three-year compulsory military service. When he finished, he began showing the first signs of paranoid schizophrenia. Between 1975 and 1995, he was hospitalized several times in a psychiatric institution before returning to Copiapó. His illness was sufficiently complex for him to be hospitalized there permanently. “It was my last hope of being saved,” he says.

He recalls that while confined to bed, he began to draw “in the sky” of his room. In 1999, Morales developed his famous “alphabetical and numerical valence formula” which he used to create machines and compulsively draw cells, nuclei, atoms and radios, using laptops and drawing on book covers and differently sized sheets of drawing paper. “I wanted to create something noble that would be useful for everyone. This mathematical formula is sophisticated; I invented it to improve and increase computer capacity”, he explains.

For the past ten years, Morales has been living at a psychatric hospital along six other chronically ill patients, participating in painting, literature, radio and computer workshops.

Michel NEDJAR 1947 - | France Michel Nedjar was born in 1947 in Soisy-sous Montmorency (Val d’Oise) to an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father. The third in a family of 7 children, he became passionate about fabric very early on – his father being a tailor –, making dresses for his sisters’ dolls – with which he secretly played – and helping his grandmother sell old rags (Schmatess) at the flea market. As an adolescent, he became painfully aware of the Holocaust, of the history of his family, in large part fallen victim to Nazism: the tragic dolls he then began to make are reminiscent of this. He subsequently went on numerous trips to Asia and Mexico, where he discovered the magical Kachina dolls and the mummies: “They weren’t dead. They had their costumes, their dresses glued to their skin.” It was upon his return that he made his first dolls (his “soul flesh” series, a pun on the French for “dear ladies”) out of rope, rags and feathers that he would soak in a bath of dirt, dye and blood. As many burnt cadavers as mutilated bodies. Starting in 1980, his creativity extended to drawing, wax and painting. When Dubuffet discovered him and started to collect his dolls, Nedjar was introduced to Art Brut: enthusiastic, he himself began to seek new artists, to collect their works and co-founded – with Madelein Lommel and Claire Teller – L’Aracine.* Thus, Nedjar entered doubly into the world of Art History, as a scout for Art Brut, and above all, as an artist. Roger Cardinal dedicated a leading article to him in the Fascicules of Art Brut and more than 20 or so of his works are in the National Museum of Modern Art thanks to the Cordier donation.

Autant de cadavres brulés et de corps mutilés. A partir de 1980, sa créativité s’étend au dessin, à la cire et à la peinture. Alors que Dubuffet le découvre et collectionne ses poupées, Nedjar rencontre l’art brut : enthousiaste, il se met à rechercher lui-même de nouveaux créateurs, à réunir leurs œuvres et cofonde L’Aracine. Ainsi, Nedjar entre doublement dans l’histoire de l’art, en tant que découvreur d’art brut et, surtout, en tant qu’artiste. Roger Cardinal lui consacre un article de fond dans les Fascicules de l’Art Brut et plus d’une vingtaine de ses travaux rejoignent le Musée national d’art moderne grâce à la donation Cordier.

Jean PERDRIZET 1907 - 1975 | France Né en Bourgogne de parents instituteurs, Jean Perdrizet passe sa vie célibataire, auprès de sa mère.

Après son bac, il obtient en 1931 le diplôme d’adjoint technique des ponts et chaussées mais sera mis en disponibilité huit ans plus tard, pour raisons de santé. Par la suite il travaille épisodiquement à Électricité de France puis à la surveillance de la construction du pont de Bollène. Vers 1955, la famille Perdrizet s’installe à Dignes.

Perdrizet réalise dès l’âge de 24 ans les plans de ses inventions prodigieuses. Il s’enthousiasme autant pour la construction de robots, de machines à percer les plafonds que de soucoupes volantes et de moyens de communiquer avec les morts ou les extraterrestres. À la suite du décès de son père, il se fabrique une table spirite pour entrer en contact avec lui et organise des séances avec ses voisins. Trouver une langue universelle le passionne également : il invente la « langue T » ou « espéranto sidéral » qu’il dit « parler couramment ». De sa cave surgissent de temps à autres des constructions loufoques.

Perdrizet se dit « inventeur » et se tient au courant des avancées scientifiques les plus récentes. Cherchant à faire connaître ses innovations, il expédie « deux tonnes [de plans] en 40 ans » à la NASA, au CNRS, aux facultés de sciences, au Vatican, à l’UNESCO dans l’espoir de recevoir un prix Nobel…

Pour autant, plusieurs scientifiques s’intéressèrent à son travail tels que José Argémi ou Jacques Paillard ; le peintre et collectionneur Adrien Dax enviait son « état de grâce »... Perdrizet, inventeur passionné par la science, repousse les frontières de cette discipline et la transcende en un espace aérien et sublime où l’impossible laisse place à l’imaginaire.

Au décès de sa mère, il déclare : « elle n’est pas morte, elle est ailleurs », avant de la rejoindre trois jours plus tard…

Jean Perdrizet, the son of schoolteachers, is born in 1907 in Villers-la-Faye. In 1931 he obtains a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Laid off in 1939 for health reasons, he engages in odd jobs in electrical work and industrial design. Single, he lives with his parents who settle in Digne in 1955. « The Inventor » as he is named, manufactures machines in his basement, shows plans to teachers, distributes his inventions: CNRS, Faculty of Science, NASA, the Vatican, Swedish Academy, in the hope of a Nobel prize.

His plans reveal, ingenious electrical devices with mathematical formulas, linguistic explanations, the metaphysical; all in a rage of materialization and concretion within the imagination. He attempts to « unravel the mysteries of life after death », with machines to « explore the Hereafter » ; to make contact and communicate with « souls » of the deceased; «souls» that become disembodied ghosts. He created a man-machine « the self-reproducing robot astronaut » capable of thought and with a « soul », « these robots in the cosmos, on other planets, are flying saucers to rocket wheel-winch ».

For Perdrizet, « thought arises in the eye, the atoms of thought are pictographic letters » a number of these machines are machines to read, see, to be drilled. He created a universal language, Esperanto sidereal, « a machine to see objects in the Moon from the Earth » « which is the language of robotic astronauts. » This language is also known as: language T, the Optimal, which he defines as « a language where each letter is optimized, and differs minimally from the shape of the object it is designated » (H = scale). It offers « an etymology which uses 92 visible signs of a typographical typewriter, the keyboard of thought».

Prophet Royal ROBERTSON 1930 - 1997| États-Unis Jeune homme, Royal Robertson travaille alternativement dans les champs ou comme peintre d’enseignes. Puis, il revient sur ses terres pour y épouser, en 1955, Adell, qui lui donnera 11 enfants.

Cette vie paisible, quoique rude, sera progressivement dévastée par la schizophrénie paranoïde dont il souffre. Sa jalousie maladive et ses bouffées délirantes finissent par faire éclater toute sa famille et, à mesure qu’il s’enfonce dans sa solitude, le monde lui paraît de plus en plus hostile.

Dès lors, il se mue en prophète sans disciples, se plaçant résolument dans un espace-temps mythique.

Son existence, à partir de cette époque, est rythmée par d’incessants allers-retours entre l’intimité de sa maison - dont l’accès est hérissé de mises en garde - et les contrées extraterrestres où il puise sa consolation.

Royal met son habileté de peintre d’enseignes au service d’un évangile pop, historié et hystérique, aux couleurs stridentes et aux typographies hallucinées. Ses calendriers sont comme la chronique d’un temps magique, ponctuée de versets bibliques et assortie de visions qui paraissent surgies de comics books au service du redressement moral.

Ascensions éthérées, portraits de divinités ou d’aristocrates « martiens », architectures futuristes pareilles à des « maisons témoins » d’un monde à venir, c’est comme si Royal Robertson, tel un Moïse des temps modernes, était descendu de sa planète chargé de ses propres tables de la loi.

En quête de rédemption – la nôtre comme la sienne – Prophet Royal Robertson disparaît en 1997, cinq ans après que l’ouragan Andrew eût emporté son havre de prédication.

Prophet Royal Robertson as a young man, alternated between working in the fields and as a painter of signs. Then, he went back to his stomping grounds in order to marry, in 1955, Adell, who would give him 11 children.

This calm life, however rough, would be progressively devastated by a paranoid schizophrenia that he was suffering from. His obsessive jealousy and his delirious flashes ended up dividing his entire family and, as he went deeper into his solitude, the world seemed more and more hostile to him. From then on, he evolved into a prophet without disciples, resolutely placing himself in a mythical time-space continuum. His existence, from this period on, was cadenced by incessant trips between the intimacy of his home – whose entrance was bristled with warning signs – and the otherworldly regions in which he took solace.

Royal put his talent as a painter of signs to use in a pop gospel, illustrated and hysterical, with strident colors and hallucinated typographies. His calendars are like the chronicle of a magical time, punctuated with biblical verse and accompanied by visions that seem to come from comic books for the purpose of moral redress.

Ethereal ascensions, portraits of divinities or “Martian” aristocrats, futurist architectures identical to the “model homes” of a world yet to come, as if Royal Robertson, like a Moses of modern times, had come down from his planet carrying his own law tables. On a quest for redemption – ours just as much as his own – Prophet Royal Robertson died in 1997, five years after Hurricane Andrew had taken his favorite refuge.

Patricia SALEN 1957 - | France Née au Québec et après un passage aux arts décoratifs de Nice, Patricia Salen devient Pandora en 2005. « Les ouvertures temporelles » lui donnent accès à la fois au passé et au futur, mais également à un autre niveau de conscience qui permet l’écriture automatique, et pourtant codifiée, que l’on retrouve dans ses travaux.

Ce ne sont plus des corps, mais des champs vibratoires, ce ne sont plus des cerveaux, mais des cartographies cryptées qui recèlent un véritable langage.

Elle y exerce, à la manière d’un Zdenek Kozek, une perception cataclysmique. Ce travail hypnotique pour sybillin qu’il soit au néophyte - n’en est pas moins plastiquement jubilatoire.

Milton SCHWARTZ 1925 - 2007 | États-Unis Milton Schwartz a passé le plus clair de son temps à prier et à faire des collages annotés sur des chemises en carton. Dans un premier temps, il a divulgué “la parole de Dieu” par différents messages.

Ses textes sont pétris de références religieuses et ses points de vue sur des questions telles que les droits de l’enfant contiennent toutes sortes de symboles contemporains : le drapeau des États-Unis, des images de personnalités comme Nelson Mandela, ou des logos de sociétés et de restaurants.

Il a vécu au cœur du quartier South Beach de Miami (Floride), mais a toujours mené une vie solitaire.

Patricia Salen was born in Quebec. After studies at Arts Décoratifs in Nice. She became Pandora in 2005. The « temporal openings » not only give her access to both past and future, but also to another level of consciousness that enables her to perform automatic writting, yet codified, that one could see in her works.

Milton Schwartz spent his time praying and making annotated collages on manila folders. In time, he introduced different messages to disseminate “the word of God.” His texts are full of religious references and his opinions on issues such as children’s rights.

It also contains all kinds of contemporary symbols: the United States’ flag, images of public figures like Nelson Mandela and logos of companies and restaurants.

He lived in the heart of Miami’s South Beach (Florida) but maintained a solitary and secluded life.

Yuichi SAITO 1983 - | Japon Yuichi Saito fréquente l’atelier de création pour adultes déficients mentaux de Kobo Shu, dans la préfecture de Saitama.

Depuis 2002, date à laquelle il a commencé ses travaux, Saito a montré un intérêt unique pour la calligraphie et la production d’oeuvres écrites, à la différence des nombreux artistes de l’atelier qui préfèrent la peinture.

Saito écrit les titres de ses émissions de télévision préférées : Pocket Monster, Doraemon, Stray Cops (une version japonaise de Miami Vice), TV Champion, etc., créant méthodiquement chaque oeuvre le jour même où l’émission télévisée est diffusée. Bien que les dessins soient fidèles aux centres d’intérêts de l’artiste, ils ont depuis peu atteint un point d’abstraction visuelle d’une grande intensité. Plus récemment, il trace avec obsession un alphabet unique de « mo », dont les répétitions révèlent ses états émotionnels.

Since 2002, when he began making work Saito showed a single interest in making written works, unlike the many artists at the studio who prefer to work in paint. Saito writes the titles of his favorite TV shows: Pocket Monster, Doraemon, Stray Cops (a Japanese version of Miami Vice), TV Champion and so on, methodically creating each piece on the specific day that the TV show is aired. While the drawings are rooted in the artist’ interests, they have recently reached a point of visual abstraction that illustrates a greater level of intensity. More recently, he is indulged in stroking a single alphabet of “mo”, whose repetitions display his emotional states.

Harald STOFFERS 1961 - | Allemagne Harald Stoffers, né en 1961 à Hambourg, écrit depuis 1999 à sa « chère maman » des lettres composées avec force comme des partitions, parfois savamment déchirées en bandes formant à leur tour une lettre à part entière. Au-delà de la banalité du propos, cette correspondance pose plus d’une question, et notamment : à qui s’adresse-t-on lorsque l’on crée ?

Car ces missives sont rarement envoyées, plus souvent sont-elles laissées là sur la table de travail, comme pour être emportées, voire recomposées par quelqu’un d’autre, cet autre qui deviendrait, ipso facto, le destinataire.

Que se joue-t-il dans ce que Michel Thévoz appelle « l’intervalle du lisible et du visible » ? N’est-ce pas l’essentielle question de la définition de l’art qui serait contenue là, dans cette épître à ses semblables ?

En tout cas, Harald Stoffers, artiste sans discours ni béquille théorique, nous oblige, au travers de la notion d’art brut, à reconsidérer les frontières artificielles trop commodément érigées entre ces formes non conventionnelles de création et l’art dit contemporain.

Harald Stoffers was born in Hamburg. In 1999, he began sending his “dear mummy” powerful letters composed like musical scores, some carefully torn into strips which in turn formed a new letter in their own right. Beyond the banality of the words, the correspondence raises a number of questions, chief among which is, who are we addressing when we create? Does the receiver necessarily live at the address indicated?

In fact, Stoffers’ letters are rarely sent; they are more commonly left lying on the work table as if there to be picked up or even recomposed by someone else – the Other, who thereby becomes the receiver.

What takes place in what Michel Thévoz has called “the gap between the lisible and the visible”?

Do Harald Stoffers’ epistles to his fellow men in fact contain the vital question of the definition of art itself?

Whatever the truth of the matter, Harald Stoffers – an artist with no recourse to the crutch of theoretical discourse – obliges us to draw on the notion of Art Brut to reconsider the artificial boundaries that are all too conveniently drawn up between such unconventional forms of creation and so-called contemporary art.

Ionel TALPAZAN 1955 - 2015 | États-Unis Selon Ionel Talpazan, ses dessins et sculptures de soucoupes volantes contiennent des informations secrètes sur les systèmes de propulsion des OVNI susceptibles d’intéresser la NASA. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que ses admirables créations multicolores, dont l’ensemble constitue une véritable station inter-galactique, nous projette dans un univers unique, celui de cet homme, qui, enfant, a vu une lumière bleue « extra-terrestre », source de son œuvre.

Ionel connaît un parcours mouvementé : né en 1955 près de Bucarest (Roumanie), il perd son frère jumeau peu après leur naissance. Ses parents, en conflit, le confient à son grand-père avant qu’à ses six ans il intègre une famille d’accueil dont la mère se révèle violente et alcoolique. À huit ans, alors qu’il se cache dans des buissons après s’être échappé de la maison, il aperçoit cette étrange lumière bleue qui se meut sans bruit : quatre ans plus tard, il dessine ses premiers OVNI.

At the age of eight, while hiding in the bushes after escaping from the house, he saw the strange blue light moving without a sound: four years later, he drew his first UFO.

Pascal TASSINI 1955 - | Belgique Issu d’une famille de trois enfants, Pascal Tassini, né en Belgique en 1955, a vécu avec ses parents jusqu’à leur mort. Son frère cadet le prend ensuite en charge et lui fait intégrer les ateliers du Créahm à Liège en 1986.

Pascal Tassini was born in Belgium in 1955 into a family of three children. He lived with his parents until they died, when one of his brothers took responsibility for him and sent him to the Créahm workshops in Liège in 1986.

Maniaque du rangement, Pascal se contente les premiers temps de mettre de l’ordre dans l’atelier, jusqu’à ce qu’il tombe en arrêt devant la reproduction d’une sculpture dans un catalogue d’exposition d’art africain. Il se met alors à modeler la terre, puis essaie le dessin et la peinture. Dans le même temps, il commence à dérober des chaises, des matériaux, avec lesquels il s’érige une cabane, à l’intérieur même de l’atelier, dont la structure évolue constamment suivant les objets - reçus en cadeau ou glanés – qu’il y accumule, liés entre eux par un enchevêtrement de tissus (habits de travail de ses compagnons d’atelier) noués les uns aux autres. Teresa Maranzano compare cet espace intime au Merzbau de Kurt Schwitters. Son antre accueille les visiteurs à condition de passer au préalable une visite médicale. Vêtu d’une blouse blanche, le docteur Tassini, comme il se présente, prend le pouls et guérit tous les maux.

He then began working with clay before trying his hand at drawing and painting. At the same time, he began stealing chairs and other material which he used to build a hut within the studio. Its structure changed constantly with the objects he was given as gifts and those he hunted around for. They were bound by a tangle of fabrics (his studio companions’ work clothes) all tied together. Teresa Maranzano compares this private space to Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau. He welcomes visitors to his den on condition that they undergo a medical check-up. Presenting himself as Doctor Tassini and wearing a white coat, he takes their pulses and cures all ills.

Depuis 10 ans, la création de Pascal Tassini n’est plus que textile, oscillant entre la confection de vêtement – robes de mariée, coiffes -, l’habillage de sa cabane ou les emballages d’objets comme le faisait Judith Scott. Il noue un réseau de lambeaux d’étoffes aux nombreuses excroissances et écrit également des missives en répétant la même lettre qu’il signe de deux anneaux entrelacés.

For the past ten years, Tassini has worked only with textiles, switching between the clothes he makes, like brides’ dresses and headdresses, the decoration of his hut, and wrapping for objects such as those Judith Scott made. He intertwines scraps of material to make a webbing with numerous outgrowths, and writes letters consisting of the same letter of the alphabet repeated over and over. He signs off with two interlinked rings.

Dominique THÉATE 1968 - | Belgique À 18 ans, alors qu’il s’apprêtait à entrer aux BeauxArts, un coma successif à un grave accident de moto fait basculer la vie prometteuse de ce jeune liégeois. L’absence de rémission condamna alors Dominique Théate à fantasmer sa vie. C’est ainsi que presque tous ses dessins sont commentés par des «Shema (sic) me représentant…» où il se met en scène, tantôt dans le costume qu’il portera lors de son mariage, tantôt en comédien adulé sur les planches, tantôt en chanteur vedette, quand il ne reproduit pas à l’infini la voiture de ses rêves. Comme l’écrit Anne-Françoise Rouche «Puisqu’on lui a volé son édification d’homme ordinaire, il va dessiner et écrire celle d’un parfait golden boy».

In his eighteens, while he got ready to start studying fine arts, a coma after a serious motorcycle accident changed the promising life of this young artist. The impossibility of recovery condemned Dominique Théte to fantasize about his life. This is why almost all his drawings are followed by a « Shema representing me(sic) …» where he stages different aspects of his fantasy life, whereas in the afternoon suit he would wear during his marriage, in a comedian loved by his audience, in a star singer, or in the reproduction of the numerous cars he dreams of. As Anne-Françoise Rouche implied: «Because he was stolen from his construction of common person, he is going to draw and to write that of a perfect golden boy».

Dominique Théate se livre dans ses dessins à une forme d’incantation qui ne serait que terriblement touchante si elle n’était douée de cette faculté rare qu’ont certaines oeuvres à nous tendre le miroir de nos propres espoirs. Depuis quelques années, ses dessins ont fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions.

Dominique Théate is engaged in his drawings with a form of incantation which would only be terribly moving if it was not endowed with this rare faculty that certain works have to stretch out to us the mirror of our own hopes. His drawings are the object of numerous exhibitions for a few years from now.

August WALLA 1936 - 2001 | Autriche Né en Basse-Autriche, August Walla reste fils unique et vit une relation fusionnelle avec sa mère qui l’élève comme s’il était une fille, espérant ainsi lui épargner d’être enrôlé dans l’armée. Il imagine longtemps qu’Hitler est son père, n’ayant pas connu le sien mort dans sa petite enfance. Incapable de s’accoutumer à l’école, il est placé dans une institution spécialisée. A l’âge de neuf ans, après avoir vécu l’expérience traumatisante de perdre le sommeil pendant trois mois, il écrit dans ses cahiers d’école : « Tout ce qui est rouge est diabolique ».

Souffre-douleur de ses camarades, il reste sans défenses, regrettant de ne pas être une fille. A seize ans, après avoir menacé de se suicider et de mettre le feu à sa maison il est interné pendant quatre ans dans un hôpital psychiatrique où on le diagnostique schizophrène. A sa sortie, sa mère se dévoue entièrement à son service. Mais en 1970, August est de nouveau admis en psychiatrie, à l’hôpital de Gugging près de Vienne. Seize ans plus tard, il devient l’un des pensionnaires de la Maison des artistes (Haus der Künstler) créée quelques années plus tôt par le docteur Navratil en marge de l’hôpital où il restera jusqu’à la fin de ses jours Comme Wölfli, Walla a rempli des pages d’écriture et lorsque la feuille de papier s’est révélée trop étroite, il a recouvert les murs de sa chambre de dessins et d’inscriptions. Parfois il peignait même sur les arbres ou sur les routes, pour ensuite photographier ses messages avec une caméra repeinte en vert parce qu’il détestait le noir. Walla inventait sans cesse des langages imaginaires inspirés par la lecture de dictionnaires de langues étrangères. Ecriture et dessin sont indissociables dans son œuvre, pétrie de symboles obsessionnels et qui se déroule comme un continuum, dont chaque partie serait inséparable de l’ensemble.

Born in Klosterneuberg in Lower Austria, August Walla remained an only son and had a very tight bond with his mother, who raised him as if her were a girl, hoping thus to spare him being enlisted in the army. He imagined for a long time that Hitler was his father, not having known his own, who died during his early childhood. Incapable of adapting to school, he was placed in a specialized institution.

At the age of nine, after having lived through the traumatizing experience of losing sleep for three months, he wrote in his school notebooks: “Everything that is red is diabolical.” The punching bag of his classmates, he remained helpless, regretting he was not a girl. At age 16, after having threatened to commit suicide and to burn down his house, he was committed for four years to a psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Upon his departure, his mother dedicated herself entirely to him. But in 1970, August was again admitted to the psychiatric ward, in the Gugging hospital, near Vienna. Sixteen years later, he became one of the members of the House of Artists (Haus der Künstler), created a few years earlier by Doctor Navratil outside the hospital, and where he would remain until the end of his life.

Like Wölfli, Walla filled pages with writing and when the sheet of paper turned out to be too narrow, he covered the walls of his room with drawings and inscriptions. Sometimes, he even painted on trees or on roads, only to then photograph his messages with a camera he had painted green because he hated black. Walla constantly invented imaginary languages inspired by his readings of foreign language dictionaries. Writing and drawing are inseparable in his work, covered in obsessive symbols and which develops as a continuum, of which each part seems inseparable from the ensemble.

Melvin WAY 1954 - | États-Unis Lambeaux de papiers récupérés, manipulés, recouverts d’écritures, de chiffres, de formules mathématiques et chimiques, de figures géométriques, de partitions de musique, de rubans adhésifs… La densité graphique des billets graciles de Melvin Way leur confère un magnétisme rare. Ils témoignent de son obsession pour l’espace et le temps, et ses équations semblent vouloir calculer les passerelles qui mènent de l’un à l’autre. Comme une manière de s’en affranchir, d’abolir la place qui nous est assignée par ces concepts et, ainsi, offrir des voies nouvelles à celui qui signe parfois lui-même Melvin « Milky » Way. Né en Caroline du sud, Melvin est élevé à Brooklyn par un parent de la famille. Au lycée, passionné par les sciences, il joue de la basse et chante dans un groupe. Alors qu’il engage des études au Technical Career Institut, il est progressivement atteint par d’importants problèmes psychiques. En couple un temps avec une toxicomane, il se consacre par la suite à la musique, puis se retrouve SDF sur l’île de Ward. C’est dans un centre pour sans-abris que, dans les années 80’, l’artiste Andrew Castrucci découvre les dessins de Melvin Way et expose son oeuvre. Melvin griffonne au stylo bille sur de petits bouts de papiers d’innombrables signes, formes, formules sibyllines qu’il chine parfois dans des livres et dont il détient seul la clé. Il travaille plusieurs semaines, parfois plusieurs mois à un dessin puis il le garde dans sa poche ou entre les pages d’un livre et intervient à nouveau dessus des années plus tard.

Aujourd’hui, Melvin Way est un créateur salué par des critiques éminents comme Jerry Saltz qui dit de lui qu’il est « un génie mystique visionnaire ».

Scraps of found paper covered in writing, numbers, mathematical and chemical formulae, geometric shapes, musical scores, and sticky tape... The density of script layered on Melvin Way’s graceful works gives them a rare magnetism. They reflect his obsession with space and time, while his equations seem intended to calculate the channels between the two; they act as a path of enfranchisement, abolishing the place assigned to us by time and space, thereby opening new vistas to the artist, who sometimes signs his works Melvin « Milky » Way. Melvin was born in South Carolina and brought up by relatives in Brooklyn. He was fascinated by science at high school, where he also played bass and sang in a group. He was a student at the Technical Career Institute when he developed symptoms of mental illness that worsened over time. His girlfriend at the time was also struggling with drug addiction.

He decided to become a musician before eventually finding himself homeless on Wards Island. The artist Andrew Castrucci came across Melvin’s drawings in a homeless drop-in centre in the mid-1980s and set up an exhibition to showcase them. Melvin used a ball-point pen to draw on scraps of paper, scribbling countless signs, forms, and mysterious formulae, some gleaned from books, their secret known to no-one but him. He spends weeks, even months, working on his drawings, keeping them in his pocket or between the leaves of a book, and returning to work on them years later. Melvin Way’s art has been admired by eminent critics such as Jerry Saltz, who described him as « a mystic visionary genius ».
