La musique retentit dans l’atelier gymnopédie de Satie ou rengaine pop, selon l’humeur - une jeune silhouette solidement campée devant le large chevalet s’active en passant de l’une à l’autre des trois grandes feuilles disposées là.

De son écriture cursive, Anton Hirschfeld maille des listes de noms, proches et amis, en colonnes processionnelles pour former la trame inattendue de ses œuvres. C’est ce prélude immuable dont Nancy Huston saisit l’essence : « Liens. Cordes. Fils qui nous relient.

Tissage d’âme. Il s’agit de ne jamais perdre le fil, ne jamais rompre le lien. Le tissu des rapports à autrui, symbolisé par leurs noms, est le basso continuo de notre existence. ». Comme si Anton faisait lit des siens pour y coucher sa peinture. Comme si le pastel, l’acrylique ou l’encre - et la composition toute entière formant la chaîne de ce canevas – comme si tout s’ordonnançait selon ces liens secrets et la cadence de la musique. Et le miracle s’accomplit avec une évidence déconcertante. À l’observer, il semblerait même, comme pour l’illustre Pablo, qu’Anton ne cherche pas, mais trouve.

Ainsi, même des œuvres inspirées de photographies de New York se transforment en défis. Défi chromatique, défi plastique, défi rythmique, défi stylistique.

New York n’est plus New York, il est davantage. La cacophonie de Manhattan est rendue à sa substance, à sa spatialité, pour ainsi dire révélée par des couleurs et des contours nouveaux.

Les sensations sont là, vibrantes comme la lumière, radicales dans leur tracé, mélodieuses par leur palette. Baudelaire écrivait à ce propos : « La bonne manière de savoir si un tableau est mélodieux est de regarder d’assez loin pour n’en comprendre ni le sujet ni les lignes.

S’il est mélodieux, il a déjà un sens, et il a déjà pris sa place dans le répertoire des souvenirs ».

Anton Hirschfeld traite avec la même amplitude tous les sujets qu’il aborde, au point qu’abstraction et figuration entrent littéralement en fusion. Et s’il ne semble, au fond, intéressé que par les prodigieuses possibilités de la forme, cette dernière ne serait rien sans l’énergie qui la parcourt et la trame qui la sous-tend. Au point que, parfois, les noms ourlés à la surface de la feuille affleurent dans la transparence d’une couleur. Comme pour nous rappeler d’où sourd cette source inextinguible. Précisément de là, du côté de l’indicible, du côté de l’inexplicable auquel l’artiste se soumet, et nous soumet avec lui Puisque rien - dans une existence qui a tant peiné à l’extraire de sa chrysalide - ne prédisposait ce jeune homme de 26 ans à nous apprendre que l’art n’est pas seulement le chemin, il est aussi l’origine et le but.

Écrivaine et musicienne d’origine canadienne, Nancy Huston a publié plus d’une soixantaine de romans, pièces de théâtre, livres jeunesse et essais en français, sa langue seconde, notamment chez Actes Sud . Son œuvre a été récompensée de plusieurs prix littéraires, dont le Femina, en 2006, pour Lignes de faille.

L’âme c’est le corps.

Elle dérive du mouvement. Ce qui nous touche nous meut nous émeut nous déplace nous fait bouger. L’émotion est motion.

Visuels, sonores ou tactiles, ce sont les rythmes du monde qui nous permettent d’être dans le corps et, inversement, ce sont les rythmes du corps qui nous permettent d’être dans le monde. C’est grâce à eux, par leur truchement, que nous parvenons à saisir le réel, à le traduire, à le fêter dans ses structures intimes, ses récurrences rassurantes.

Tout est musique chez Anton Hirschfeld. Avant même qu’il ne vienne au monde, sa mère lui fait écouter Bach, Schubert, Verdi... Tout bébé, il bouge les mains au rythme des chansons que lui chante son père. À dix mois, il chante avec les chœurs polyphoniques géorgiens, modulant sa voix pour suivre la leur.

Puis le visuel devient lui aussi musique : l’enfanteau arque son dos et jette la tête en arrière pour regarder le monde à l’envers tel un tableau de Baselitz.

À mesure qu’Anton en devient conscient, le langage devient lui aussi musique. À trois ans, au lieu d’écouter les histoires qu’on lui lit le soir ou de regarder les illustrations qui les accompagnent, il est fasciné par le texte écrit et le son que font les phrases en sortant de la bouche de ses parents. Bien avant de maîtriser l’art de la parole, car de sérieuses difficultés de coordination motrice l’entravent, il imite la musique verbale qu’il a retenue de ces lectures et s’efforce de la reproduire, souvent en riant aux éclats. Tout comme il a adoré suivre des cours de piano ou de percussion, de voir décoller des avions, d’enregistrer la scansion des lumières dans le métro ou l’ascenseur, de même, il développera maintenant une passion pour les mots, son et sens. Après les mots-musiques, ceux que l’on entend, chuchote ou crie, viendront les mots-couleurs, ceux que l’on dessine. Très attentif à la précision orthographique et sémantique, Anton se donnera énormément de mal pour maîtriser l’art de l’écriture. Là aussi, il s’autorisera à vivre les rythmes du langage de

l’intérieur, de tout son corps-âme. À être mû et ému par lui. À être lui.

En 2000-2001, à l’âge de huit ans, Anton passe un an et demi avec sa famille à Jérusalem. Il est accueilli plusieurs heures par jour au Centre Feuerstein, encore présidé à l’époque par son fondateur le professeur Reuven Feuerstein, éminent spécialiste des désordres neurocognitifs. Les différents thérapeutes de ce centre joueront un rôle décisif dans la formation du corpsesprit de l’enfant. Au moment de son diagnostic initial, ils énuméreront comme principaux « îlots de compétence » chez cet enfant la perception de la couleur, de la forme, de la taille et de la quantité. Tiens, tiens. Au jardin public, il semble hypnotisé par le bruit imperceptible du sable qui glisse de la pelle et tombe dans le seau, ou par la vue d’un ballon rouge dévalant encore et encore la pente du toboggan. Il est passionné par tout ce qui bouge et par la manière dont ça bouge : avions, ascenseurs, trains, ballons, métros, musique, bulles...

Tous les noms d’artiste qui pourraient venir à l’esprit lorsqu’on contemple son travail pictural (Morandi, Mondrian, Goncharova, De Stael, Rothko, Klee...), le peintre lui-même les ignore. Il ne fréquente ni les galeries ni les musées, et n’a pas été formé dans une école des beaux-arts. Il ne manifeste pas le moindre intérêt pour l’histoire de l’art ou l’hagiographie des peintres, sans parler des montagnes de commentaires, théories et discours au sujet de l’art contemporain qui encombrent 17

nos méninges. Son propre père, le sculpteur canadien Jonathan Hirschfeld, est un artiste accompli ; la présence proche du studio paternel - avec sa belle ambiance de travail, ses chevalets, socles, matériaux, odeurs, argiles, musiques - a dû éveiller la fibre artistique du fils. Mais c’est surtout à l’école que, petit à petit, grâce à quelques enseignantes attentives, l’adolescent a appris à capter et à engendrer le monde dont il avait besoin pour vivre : fenêtres ouvrant sur fenêtres, cadres enserrant cadres, trames couvrant trames. Gratte-ciels, cages, vitres, carrés, rectangles, angles, escaliers. Pinceaux posés à la diagonale.

Portraits qui, afin de saisir l’essence intérieure de leur sujet, tournent résolument le dos au réalisme.

Déjà, en attendant la fête, leurs noms écrits se donnent la main et se suivent sur la page, avançant gracieusement dans une chaîne infinie telles les Danseuses de Matisse. Mais l’inverse est également vrai. Je l’avais surnommé « le communicateur », bien avant de savoir la difficulté qu’il aurait à apprendre à parler. Enfant, il nous impressionnait déjà par sa présence joyeuse, et un médecin perspicace nous a dit que le charme d’Anton allait jouer un rôle significatif dans sa vie.

Anton avait parfois un regard tel qu’il me donnait le sentiment d’avoir vécu d’autres vies. Un jour, sur une île lointaine en Grèce, j’ai montré sa photo au poète Robert Lax. Sans rien dire, il a levé les yeux sur moi et j’ai vu la même lumière dans son regard. Cet épisode m’a inspiré un court poème sur l’amour que j’ai pour mon fils, sur le même ton enjoué qui est parfois celui de Lax. Anton et moi le récitons encore aujourd’hui.

Anton a réalisé très tôt qu’il n’était pas capable de faire certaines choses que faisaient les autres enfants. C’était peu de temps avant que sa petite soeur ne le dépasse dans bien des domaines. Un matin, Léa nous a dit, comme si elle pensait tout haut, « … mais Anton, il ne parle pas ». Elle aurait aussi bien pu dire « … mais Anton, il tombe tout le temps ». À vrai dire, les experts ne pouvaient l’expliquer, ses handicaps étaient déconcertants. Pourtant, nous étions convaincus

de son potentiel et avons tout fait pour le développer. La force de sa personnalité et sa patiente détermination nous ont donné la conviction qu’il allait surpasser toutes les attentes.

Anton avait 15 ans lorsque nous avons découvert ses premières peintures. Aussitôt, j’ai été saisi par le sentiment d’une inévitabilité bienheureuse. Je retrouvais dans son travail des échos des paysages urbains de mon oncle, des tableaux naïfs de ma grand-mère, des croquis habiles de mon père. Les tableaux d’Anton me ramenaient au petit garçon radieux échafaudant des constructions complexes et colorées de Lego géants. Il faisait danser les couleurs au rythme de son geste et, inspiré par les reflets dans les vitres des trains, créait des espaces empreints de profondeur et de lumière. Anton avait trouvé son univers.

Quand Nicole n’a plus pu travailler avec lui, elle a passé le relais à Anne 2. Ils ont entamé une conversation qui dure encore aujourd’hui. Une conversation où elle partage tout avec lui : nouveaux matériaux, nouvelles musiques, nouvelles sources d’inspiration. Anne l’appelle mon ami de l’art. Anton aime la surprendre.

J’ai travaillé dans cette même cour intérieure pendant près de 30 ans. Il y avait là un autre sculpteur3, plus âgé, pas commode. Quand nous avons commencé à exposer le travail d’Anton, cet homme s’est pris d’affection pour lui, en le laissant entrer librement dans son atelier. Il a été le premier artiste confirmé à nous dire que « Je me souviens du jour où j’ai vu Anton le travail d’Anton tenait la route. Un matin, peindre pour la première fois, prendre les mon voisin ne s’est plus réveillé, il avait couleurs joyeusement dans l’assiette un 84 ans. Au début, le rythme de ses allées pinceau brosse à la main et sa belle énergie et venues, sa présence me manquaient. Et un jour, comme par miracle, un jeune de ses proches, qu’il interprète librement, artiste a commencé à travailler dans l’ate- avec tendresse et humour. Il apporte une lier d’en face. solution originale à chaque sujet, loin des codes convenus, dans un vocabulaire qui Avant de franchir le seuil, on entend déjà la évoque mystérieusement la peinture dite musique. Parfois de la pop, parfois du Erik moderne, dont il ignore l’existence.

Satie, parfois du rock. À voir Anton gesticuler devant son chevalet, on ressent sa sensibilité, ses perceptions particulières.

Bien souvent, on découvre des colonnes de noms manuscrits sur trois feuilles de papier à dessin posées à la verticale. Cette mise en route est devenue habituelle chez lui, une façon de se concentrer, de déclencher l’émotion, de donner forme à l’énergie qui nourrira sa performance. Car, dans un laps de temps d’une à deux heures, il va composer une sorte de chorale, d’harmonie visuelle à trois voix, où lignes, plans de couleurs et formes vont s’entremêler pour suivre une trame invisible. Par couches successives, il va peindre des transparences et des profondeurs dans lesquelles on voit, et on devine, des intuitions chromatiques et des harmonies en pigment.

Il s’inspire souvent d’un livre de photos de New York, avec son architecture abstraite, ses vues complexes et insolites. Ou de la cour de son atelier, dont les vieilles granges habillées de plantes grimpantes et la cour pavée rappellent une ruelle du vieux Paris, qu’un ciel ouvert éclaire comme à la campagne. Et puis les visages

The music fills the studio – Satie’s Gymnopédie or a pop tune, depending on the day – as a young silhouette standing solidly before the large easel works back and forth across three large sheets of paper.

With his cursive writing, Anton Hirschfeld weaves lists of names, family and friends, into processional columns that form the unexpected fabric of his works. It is the essence of this immutable prelude that Nancy Huston seized upon: “Links. Ropes. Threads that tie us together. Weaving of the soul. It is about never losing the thread, never breaking the link. The fabric of relations to others, symbolized by their names, is the basso continuo of our existence.” As if Anton was making a bed of his relationships on which to lay down his paintings. As if pastel, acrylic or ink - and the entire composition forming the chain of this canvas - as if everything was arranged according to these secret links and the rhythm of the music. And the miracle is accomplished with disconcerting evidence. To observe it, it would even seem, as for the illustrious Pablo, that Anton does not seek, he finds.

And so, even works inspired by photographs of New York are transformed into challenges. Chromatic challenges, plastic challenges, rhythmic challenges, stylistic challenges. New York is no longer New York; it is more. The cacophony of Manhattan is made into its substance, its spatiality, revealed, so to speak, by new colors and contours.

Anton Hirschfeld treats all the subjects he explores with the same breadth, to the point that abstraction and figuration literally fuse. If fundamentally all that interests him are the prodigious possibilities of form, this form would be nothing without the energy that flows through it and the structure that lies beneath. To the point that sometimes the names hemmed on the surface of the sheet are discernable through the transparency of a color, as if to remind us of this inextinguishable source. From precisely that point, on the side of the inexpressible, on the side of the inexplicable, to which the artist submits, and to which he submits us with him.

Since nothing – in an existence that has struggled so hard to extract him from his chrysalis – predisposed this 26-year old man to teach us that art is not only the path, but is also the origin and the destination.

A Canadian writer and musician, Nancy Huston has published more than 60 novels, plays, children’s books and essays in French, her second language, notably at Actes Sud. Her work has been awarded several literary prizes, including Femina, in 2006, for Lignes de Faille (Fault lines).

Soul is anima - that which is animated, moving, moveable, capable of being moved, i.e. the body.

Soul is body.

Movement is its very essence. What touches you is what moves you, makes you move, displaces you, shoves you around. Emotion is motion.

For Anton Hirschfeld, everything is music. His mother had him listening to Bach, Schubert and Verdi before he was born... As an infant lying in his crib, he’d wave his hands in time to the songs his father sang him.... By ten months, he was singing along with Gregorian polyphonic choirs, modulating his voice line to follow theirs. Then the visual world became music in turn: the baby would arch its body and toss its head backwards to look at the world upside down, like a Baselitz painting. In playgrounds, he’d be mesmerized by the imperceptible sound of sand sliding from shovel to pail, or by the sight of a red ball rolling down the slide again and again. He was thrilled by anything that moved and by the ways in which it moved – planes, elevators, trains, balls, subways, music, bubbles...

As Anton acquired consciousness, language, too, both written and oral, turned out to be music. At the age of three, rather than listening to bedtime stories or looking at the pictures in the story book, he was fascinated

How interesting. Just look at what’s being explored, felt, loved and breathed in the various canvases, inks, watercolours and drawings of Hirschfeld’s first solo show at the Gallery christian berst art brut in Paris.

Any number of famous names might come to mind as we contemplate the young man’s work (Morandi, Mondrian, Goncharova, De Stael, Rothko, Klee...), - but the artist himself is unfamiliar with these names. Anton Hirschfeld doesn’t hang out in galeries or museums, nor did he attend a school of fine arts. He displays no interest in the history of art or the hagiography of great painters, to say nothing of the mountains of commentary, theory and discourse that have been produced on the subject of contemporary art in the past few decades.

When I follow his gaze to try to see what he sees, my eyes zoom in on a detail which would otherwise have gone unnoticed. Thus isolated, the bubbles, lights and circular movements become abstract images that give me a sense of well-being and beauty. I can’t help thinking that Anton has an artist’s eye – he sees the hidden beauty of things.»*

Life is hard enough as it is. For Anton Hirschfeld, acquiring the abilities that came easily to the rest of us (walking, for instance, or talking, or coordinating sound and movement), was a long and painful process. The reverse, however, is also true : abilities to which most artists aspire to in vain – losing oneself in ones work, creating naturally, almost effortlessly, the way one breathes, because one has no choice in the matter, without worrying about what people will think, or wondering if it’s any good, or seeing oneself from the outside, or comparing oneself to others, or sabotaging one’s chances... all this seems to come easily to Anton. He has a gift - and he gives, with amazing calm and confidence. Watching him work, it is difficult not to envy him.

Premonitory words indeed. Today, it is our good fortune to be given an in-depth glimpse of Anton Hirschfeld’s hidden beauty.

Jonathan Hirschfeld, sculptor and photographer, is Anton Hirschfeld’s father.

I called him “the communicator” long before we had any inkling that he would have great difficulty learning to speak.

When he was an infant, we were struck by his jubilant presence; a wise doctor commented that Anton’s charm would play a significant role in his life.

Sometimes Anton would look at me so knowingly that it seemed as if he had lived former lives. One day, on a remote island in Greece, I showed a photograph of Anton to the poet Robert Lax. Silently, he looked back at me with the same luminous gaze. I was inspired to compose a little verse about my love for my son, in a playful style Lax sometimes used. Anton and I still recite it together.

Early on, Anton understood that he was unable to do things that other children could. It was not long before his little sister had surpassed him in all kinds of ways. One morning Léa turned toward us and said, as if thinking out loud, “…. but Anton doesn’t talk”. She could just as easily have said, “…. but Anton falls all the time”. In truth, none of the experts knew why; his handicaps were confounding. However, we were convinced of his potential and did everything to nourish it.

As much as anything, it was the force of his personality and his patient determination that gave us confidence our son would surpass everyone’s expectations.

Anton was fifteen when we first laid eyes on his paintings. Immediately, I was overcome with a sense of blessed inevitability.

My uncle’s cityscapes, my grandmother’s naïve oils, and my father’s deft sketches all somehow echoed in his work.

Something about the way that he had made these paintings recalled the little boy beaming beside his complex, colourful, Lego structures. He made colours dance with the rhythm of his marks and, inspired by train windows, created spaces with a sense of the beyond and the deep.

Anton had found his realm.

Nicole 1, his first art teacher, recalls: I remember the day I saw Anton paint for the first time, joyfully taking the colours from the palette, wide brush in hand with his beautiful energy, happy and instinctive, enthusiastically filling space, the entire space of the sheet, the rhythmic dabs of colour, a game, a certain self-evidence, the possibility of a path …

Nicole understood that her challenge as his teacher was to support his efforts, within terms he could grasp. He was carried along by his own sure judgement, his purposeful search for just the right nuance, and his certainty about when a painting was done.

When Nicole could no longer work with him, she passed the baton to Anne. They began a conversation that continues to this day, in which she shares with him everything from new materials, to new music to new sources of inspiration. Anne 2 calls him “mon ami de l’art” (my comrade in art). Anton likes to surprise her.

For almost thirty years I have worked in the same Parisian courtyard. There used to be another, older sculptor 3, who was not easy to know. When we began to show some of Anton’s paintings, this difficult man took to him and he surprised us all when he would allow Anton to visit his studio freely. He was the first professional to insist that Anton’s work could stand on its own. One morning at the age of eighty-four, my neighbour did not awaken. At first I missed his presence, the rhythm of his coming and going. He was like a lonely hiker and I enjoyed his total absorption in his journey. However I enjoyed my own solitude and it felt good to be alone.

Even before one crosses the threshold, one can already hear the music. Sometimes a pop song, sometimes Erik Satie, sometimes rock and roll. Watching Anton standing before his easel gesturing to the rhythms, one can already feel his unusual sensibility and his special nature. Often, one finds handwritten lists of names on three, separate sheets of paper set vertically side-by-side. It has become his habit to begin this way, a way of concentrating, of triggering feelings, of shaping the energy that will fuel the performance that will follow. During the next hour or two, Anton will construct a kind of visual chorus in three voices, where lines, planes of colour, and forms, will build according to an invisible plan. Layer upon layer, he will create transparencies and depths where one sees, and intuits, harmonies in pigment. Often a book of photographs of New York City will inspire him, with their abstract architecture and their complex, unexpected views.

Or our courtyard, where the open sky illuminates the vinecovered stables and the cobblestones, as if this were still the 19th century. Or faces, that he interprets freely, yet tenderly and with humour. For each
