On 6 August, the editorial team and I had the pleasure of attending our second Swiss National Day celebration at the Swiss Club. Since that evening was one of the rare occasions that the Club opens its doors to the public, we got to observe first impressions being made on first-time visitors to the Club. The wet start in no way diluted the spirit of the occasion, and the staff showed exceptional grace under duress. In fact, we overheard several compliments to that effect. The music was amazing, the food plentiful and the beer cold. It was a fabulous evening.

In many ways, Swiss National Day is a dress rehearsal for Oktoberfest – the legendary annual celebration of good beer, good company and good excuses to party. Make sure you have your tickets in hand, and start working up a thirst… While you’re at it, drink in some Oktoberfest trivia on Page 30.

Every issue I wait for the list of ‘Welcomes and Farewells’ to be forwarded to our editorial team. I noted with sadness that many Members, some of whom I have had the pleasure of meeting, are leaving. However, given the constant efforts of the Management and Committee to add more value to Club life – by expanding the range of activities, livening up the restaurants’ menus with ever changing promotions and upholding the highest standards of service and housekeeping, it seems certain that newcomers to Singapore will weigh up their options and choose the Swiss Club over all others. Salil and Mari did just that. Read about the reasons behind their choice on Page 27.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Members, After a long holiday break, at least for some of us, I am very happy to see you back at our Club. A very special welcome is dedicated to all our new Members. We all hope that you will enjoy your stay in Singapore and make good friends at our wonderful Swiss Club. Please do not hesitate to approach our Management and the Committee for any information or support required.

The first highlight of the new Club year has already passed. Over 500 guests joined us for the traditional Swiss National Day party. As usual it was a great event with a fantastic performance by the band of the Swiss Armed Forces, and excellent food and drinks.

In a few days, we will have our very famous Oktoberfest that will be followed by the AGM on Monday 26 September 2016. You will soon receive our invitation together with the agenda. We do invite all of you to come to the AGM as this is the most important statutory event for the Club. It is not only to accept the Club’s accounts and to elect and re-elect the Committee, but also to obtain knowledge about current and future plans. We have a number of very important agenda items to be decided at this year’s AGM. Please bear with me while I share some detailed information. First of all we need to decide on the proceedings to satisfy the URA requirements with regards to the Club’s gross floor area. We shared this in detail at the last EGM in April. In a nutshell: The Club faces potential Development Charges imposed by the URA for some older buildings which have not been registered with URA initially. The ‘buildings’ are the Pergola Roof, the Jungle Bar, the two large awnings (one next to the Jungle Bar, one next to the Tennis Courts) and the Towel and Tennis Hut. This situation was detected as part of a cleaning up exercise focusing on the Club’s inventory of buildings.

During that exercise, it surfaced that the buildings mentioned above did not have the necessary URA approvals. When

those numbers/additions were sent to URA for approval, the Club received a Development Charge estimate of roughly SGD 1.3 million initially, but this was raised later on to an amount of over SGD 2.0 million, based upon the fact that the Club has fully utilised its gross floor area according to applicable plot ratios. We have to bear in mind that the percentage of the usable gross floor area had been reduced in the past years from 0.4 to 0.19. Thus, after having constructed The Guesthouse cum administrative building we reached the 0.19 limit. The Club has until end of September to decide the reduction of its total gross floor area (by either removing those buildings that have not yet been approved or by removing other buildings) or to pay the

Development Charges. As the best and easiest option, the Committee proposes to the members that we will tear down the Squash Hall instead of paying the amount of about S$1.3 million of Development Charges. We will need to do this to obtain required GFA (gross

floor area) reduction. The two awnings will be replaced with some smaller ones that do not count for the gross floor area calculation. Instead of paying for development charges as mentioned before, the Committee proposes (at a later EGM) to renovate the Pergola and the Pool Bar as both urgently need to be upgraded. This will definitely be a beneficial investment of money.

For the last financial year the Club suffered a loss that resulted primarily from a substantial decrease of our Membership base, unsatisfactory F&B results and the GST back-charges for the years 2012-2015. The detailed figures are published together with the documents for the AGM. The yearbook will again be published electronically but a printed version can be obtained upon request.

The present Club year will be challenging again. We still notice a significant reduction in Membership sign-ups. This is not because the Club is less attractive than previously. The simple fact is that fewer expatriates are coming to Singapore and especially fewer families with children are sent abroad. The Club is very well aware of the situation and the Committee and Management need to propose some adjustments to bring our Club back on solid financial ground.

The Committee will propose two measures to improve both the operational results and also the F&B results. These are an increase of our monthly subscriptions and also an advanced debit of F&B consumption.

For the increase of the monthly subscription we will propose two options (S$2.50 inflation-tagged, or S$10 per Member per month).

Regarding the F&B, we propose to charge at the beginning of each quarter S$150 (S$50 per month per Member).

This F&B credit can be used at any time within the Club’s financial year. Most Clubs enforce a minimum consumption to encourage usage of their facilities.

Today we have 25% of our Members not even spending S$50 per month at our Club – we want to bring these Members back to our outlets.

Last but not least, we will have a slight amendment of the rules as the article 6b (Members) is misleading and could become a real problem for the Club in this rather difficult economic environment.

We will also be in a position to inform you in detail about the status of the land sale that was approved at our EGM held in April.

We are confident that our projects will add value to Club life and contribute to the exceptional Swiss Club ambience. To conclude, I would like to express my heartiest thanks to all who have contributed to our Club.

The Committee, Management and staff are motivated to serve the Swiss Club long into the future. A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Welcome back to Singapore and the Swiss Club, in the event that you have just returned from summer holidays overseas.

Also, a heartfelt welcome to our newly joined Club Members, whether you entered through our Summer Membership Programme, ‘Parents & Teachers’ offer or by referral, we are delighted to have you with us. Rest assured that all our Club employees and contracted service providers are here to serve you in the best possible way. We also wish ‘Bon Voyage’ to all our loyal Members who have decided to return home. We hope you will visit us once in a while – remember we have great accommodation at the Club’s Guesthouse.

With yet another exciting issue of ‘RELAX’ in your hands, the massive Oktoberfest tentage is once again being assembled to welcome some 10,000+ beer-, food- and music-loving patrons.

We truly hope you will be joining in the festivities. Ticket sales are encouraging despite the somewhat gloomy economy, so get the few tickets left if yours are not already in hand, and ‘Be Merry, Be Happy’, as the saying goes. Since we are rolling out some new initiatives at the tent, you simply have to come explore it for yourself. Also, make sure you don’t miss out on the special Oktoberfest Brew, the Angermaier, ‘all you need for Oktoberfest' booth and much more…

As mentioned on Page 5, the Committee and Management would like to thank all those Members who provided feedback through the Pulse Survey, we are still compiling the final indicators so strategies and action plans can be put in place to serve Members better. As the General Manager, it’s delightful to see the support and efforts made by Committee, Management and staff across a broad spectrum of the Club’s activities have not gone unnoticed by Club Members. We thank you for the encouragement and will strive for further improvements over the coming financial year.

A new addition to the Club’s membership services is the soft launch of our newly opened hair salon and soon to be opened spa next to our gym. Do drop by to say hello to the friendly team, led by Frederic Schaaf, and find out anything you need to know about hair, inclusive of products, styling, colouring and other services.

An opening special of 20% off is being offered on all services throughout the month of September.

Last but not least, the past month saw pruning and trimming of our trees to enhance safety measures, electrical upgrades and the completion of the Pavilion works. The Club now also boasts its very own CERT team, responsible for responding to evacuation, fire prevention and ensuring the safety of our Members and staff.

I wish you all a great September and October ahead. Make sure you keep yourself updated via our e-news and the many ongoing promotions displayed within the Club.

Blessings from Above, Greetings from Afar and Music from the Swiss Army For the first time in 25 years or so, it rained at the start of our Swiss National Day festivities on Saturday 6 August. Quick thinking saved the day, and band and guests were swiftly ushered upstairs to Arbenz until the heavens closed. Weather or not, a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all.

THUNDER, LIGHTNING AND… LOTS OF UMBRELLAS! The rain poured down, the sky looked ominous and many furrowed brows and frowns could be seen among the hard-working staff on the afternoon of Saturday 6 August. In spite of fervent prayers and blind optimism, the rain did not relent.

Quick thinking, fancy footwork and lots of umbrellas saved the day. The guests were escorted by Swiss Club staff from their dry haven under the covered entrance of The Guesthouse to the registration desks outside the entrance to the Clubhouse.

They were then directed upstairs, where they enjoyed delightful red and white wine welcome drinks, kindly sponsored by the Swiss Embassy, and beer and soft drinks, courtesy of the Swiss Club.

DRY SKIES AND STIRRING SPEECHES After about half an hour of music and mingling, the band moved downstairs and set up in the grassed area beyond the chess board, on the edge of the jungle.

The 14-piece Swiss Army Band, or rather Schweizer Militärmusik, along with their conductor, manager and organiser, treated the 500-strong crowd to some marvellous music. Young and old alike were enthralled by the rare sight and tremendous sound of a uniformed brass band.

At 7.05pm, the bell was sounded by our General Manager Carsten Kjeldmann.

After welcoming the guests, which comprised Members and public, Carsten introduced the Club President Martin Silberstein and the Swiss Ambassador to Singapore His Excellency Thomas Kupfer.

Our Club President joked that the rain may have been a sign from above. “I think it’s really time to step down. I have been President for 11 years and it’s never rained. Now it’s raining…” (Please, don’t take it so personally, Mr Silberstein!)

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Here are some excerpts from the traditional Swiss National Day speech by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Johann N. Schneider-Ammann.

The opening address…

“I’d like to think that at this moment you are in a beautiful, remote natural setting or in a huge city. You too may associate the 1st of August with many images, and possibly you are a little homesick.

But what we can say for sure is that the Swiss, wherever they are in the world, are today especially proud of their country, and Switzerland is proud of its citizens, near and far.”

On tightening the bonds between the homeland and the 750,000-plus Swiss citizens abroad…

Swiss Army Band to Singapore to grace the occasion of Swiss National Day at the Club. He also thanked the sponsors, including the Swiss Embassy, before handing over the microphone to Mr Kupfer.

Mr Kupfer’s speech highlighted the recent visit of the Swiss President to Singapore, Johann N. Schneider-Ammann. Above all, the similarities between Singapore and Switzerland had become increasingly apparent during the Swiss President’s meeting with the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Tharman.

“It was clear that so many things are similar between Singapore and Switzerland, not only our colours,” said Mr Kupfer. He mentioned the real and growing threats to our nations’ security, from terrorism to opponents to the prevailing governments, and our common strength of good governance.

After Mr Kupfer’s speech, the guests attentively listened to a recording of the Swiss President’s National Day speech, translated into English. Then followed a rousing rendition of the Swiss national anthem, performed live by the band. With the formal proceedings of the evening completed, the bar and buffet tables were declared open, and the feasting began.

A BONFIRE AND BON VIVANTS Chef Adrian, supported by a small army of caterers who were employed especially for the evening, kept the food coming fast and hot. Well-behaved queues soon formed at the everpopular raclette stations, and both cold cuts and hot roasts disappeared as soon as they were served, only to be instantly replenished by vigilant staff.

Just after 9pm, the traditional bonfire was lit by the car park, and wide-eyed children with lampions dangling gazed in wonder upon the leaping flames.

A special occasion, good company, great food and drink, amazing music and a setting second to none – all the ingredients of a wonderful celebration came together on the evening of 6 August 2016.

“It is important that you can take part in the decision-making process, and that we hear your voices. You bring a point of view that often differs from that of your fellow citizens at home.”

In closing…

“However close your ties are to Switzerland, I’d like to thank you for fostering these ties along with us, together for our country. I’d like to wish you a happy 1st of August.”

… ON A RELATED NOTE… We conducted (no pun intended) a short interview with Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Robatel, Manager of Schweizer Militärmusik. During our chat, we learned that Singapore marked the final leg of the Swiss Army Band’s Asian tour. In the previous two and a half weeks, the band had performed in Seoul, Beijing and Manila.

The average age of the band members was 20 years old. At the conclusion of this tour, Patrick explained that the band would be disbanded and members would join other brigade bands. The current tour was a collaboration between the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Defence. It missions were to play for both Swiss Embassies and Swiss people abroad, and to interact with other military bands around the world. The day after they played at the Swiss Club, the band was scheduled to perform at Gardens by the Bay with the Singapore Armed Forces Band.

When asked how the members had enjoyed the tour, Patrick replied, “Everywhere was interesting and well-organised. It has been a cultural learning journey and a culinary adventure.”

We asked Patrick how he found Singapore. “It’s like Switzerland!’ he replied, “The wi-fi works everywhere, the people are kind and warm, and the efficiency and organisation make us feel like we’re at home.”

Superhero Bash Packed a Punch

This year’s Staff Party was a superhero-themed, turbo-charged and fun-filled affair.

Kudos to all team members who dressed to the nines and entered fully into the spirit (and the spirits) of the evening.

START WITH A BANG As the event proper was due to start at 6pm, Christelle interrupted proceedings with a grand entrance and a big bang in her skintight and super-sexy Black Widow (a-la Natasha Romanoff) outfit and guns.

She performed a cheeky dance with Ainsley the emcee, who was visibly enchanted by Christelle’s captivating outfit.

VICTIMS VERSUS VILLAINS There were many frivolous and actionpacked moments as the victims and the villains launched mock-attacks on each other for photo-taking purposes.

The well patronised photo-booth was transformed into a veritable battlefield.

Much to the amusement of onlookers and the annoyance of the emcee, Rave aka The Joker was so stuck in his annoying character that the emcee was forced to ask him to slip out of character for at least one merciful 14

minute. The Joker managed to overcome his true nature and briefly stop joking around… albeit very briefly!

COSTUME EXTRAVAGANZA All staff made a superhuman effort to dress up in their favourite heroes attire.

After much deliberation, the best-dressed winners were announced and crowned.

Samy aka Thor took the trophy in the male category, with Carsten as runner-up.

Meanwhile, Christelle aka Black Widow trumped the female category, closely followed by runner-up Jo. SUPER-WHO? The evening was graced by a smattering of superheroes who were so well disguised that we could barely fathom their true identities. We suspect that Superwoman was our very own hyperactive Eden, though to this day we cannot be sure… Rumour has it that the Flash was our beloved newbie from marketing, Gary.

Others donned gender-bending costumes, such as Spider(wo)man and Hawkeye. A special appearance by Chun Li, our street fighter of the night, was a highlight. She clearly kicked Bane’s bottom – a sight etched forever in the memories of all who beheld the flamboyant spectacle.

TO PLAY IS NOT ENOUGH While many of our youth Members already play football, rugby and tennis like semi-pros, or swim like fish, are they training their minds as well as their bodies?

In truth, the importance of developing the sports psychology factor of our kids’ development is often overlooked. After training the wonderful young Members here at the Swiss Club for the last two years, I personally know that sports are an important part of their lives. We have helped many young adults improve their 16

game and attitude on and off the court and field.

NEW YOUTH TRAINING PROGRAMMES To help improve the performance of our younger members both physically and mentally, we have developed special training systems. For starters, we are offering two age-grouped 12-week programmes for youths aged 12 to 18. The 12-week programme is a structured system of physical exercises and activities to improve youngsters' teamwork, psyches and attitudes.

SPORTS THE SEASON’S IN FULL SWING The new tennis season has started and competitions are already on. Ladies and men will defend the Swiss Club flag in various inter-club leagues. And our young Members are already playing junior tournaments. Good luck to all players!

LOOKING BACK Just before the summer holiday, we organised a Family Day event with tennis, padel, music and a barbecue. It was a delightful event with 50 players, comprising pairs of one parent and one child playing in double matches. Eighty people showed up for the barbecue!

Yoga

Yin yoga has been offered weekly at the Swiss Club since October 2014. Instructor Laurence Chehab-Fabry shares some of the manifold benefits of this slow-paced style of yoga.

SLOWER AND LONGER Yin yoga differs from other kinds of yoga like Hatha and Vinyasa in that the pace is much slower and poses are held for longer periods of time – typically 3 to 5 minutes.

“While this can seem quite passive and easy, it will definitely take you out of your comfort zone and challenge you physically and mentally,” said Laurence.

PERFECT ‘YIN’ TO A ‘YANG’ REGIME Laurence explained that Yin yoga is the perfect complement to more dynamic and muscular types of exercise, which can be thought of as ‘Yang’.

“I highly encourage anyone to have a balanced sports practice incorporating Yang and Yin activities. Many people who think all they need to feel good and be happy is to ‘sweat it out’ and build strength would actually feel even better if they also nourished their Yin side,” advised Laurence.

A PERSONAL JOURNEY After 13 years in marketing and brand management, Laurence moved into coaching. While she encouraged her clients to take up yoga, it was not until 2010 that she actually stepped on a yoga mat. When her family moved to Singapore in 2012, she found the time to passionately pursue yoga. Having attended numerous ongoing and refresher teacher training programmes, she is now a Yoga Alliance RYT500-certified Yoga instructor.

“As a teacher, I love to witness how quickly Yin yoga practice can lead to increased physical ease and mind quietness, even to those who thought it would never be accessible to them!” said Laurence.

First Swiss State Visit to Singapore President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, President of the Swiss Confederation, made the first Swiss State visit to the Republic of Singapore from 11 to 13 of July 2016. The President was accompanied by an important delegation of high-ranking Swiss government officials and a business delegation.

GRAND RECEPTION President Schneider-Ammann was received with military honours by President Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam at the Istana. The two Presidents emphasised the importance of the friendship between our two countries, highlighting our successful collaborations to date and the possibility of strengthening our partnership in the fields of science and education.

The Swiss President also met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman and Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang. Throughout all of the meetings, the excellent relations between our countries were underlined.

KEY EVENT One of the highlights was the Switzerland-Singapore Business Forum on ‘SkillsFuture – Developing a Futureready Workforce’. Keynote speakers were President Schneider-Ammann and Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Education and Social Policies Tharman. The aim of the forum was to shed light on the positive impact of vocational training on the economy, and to raise awareness among Singaporean business leaders on their important role in investing in the young generation with a view to fostering lifelong learning.

During an Orchid Naming Ceremony at the Botanic Gardens, a special orchid was named after President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann.

The event was organised by the Swiss Embassy together with Singapore’s Ministry of Education. About 250 guests from both governments, representatives of Swiss and Singaporean companies, local training providers and educational institutions attended the event at the Shangri-La Hotel.

FLORAL TRIBUTE During an Orchid Naming Ceremony at the Botanic Gardens, a special orchid was named after President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann. This lovely gesture of friendship is traditionally extended by the Singapore Government to Heads of State as well as Government and VIP guests.

On the evening of his arrival in Singapore, President Schneider-Ammann also met with the Swiss Community.

About 130 guests had the opportunity to gather and talk with our President during a reception held at the Swiss Club and organised by the Embassy.

SSiS Goes Back in Time at the Summer Night Event 2016 The end of the school year at SSiS culminated in a wonderful show – the Summer Night Event. This year’s event saw us hit the rewind button and journey back in time.

PREPARATION PAYS OFF In the weeks leading up to the event, students and teachers worked together and rehearsed diligently to put together a stunning display and spectacular performances at the Summer Night Event 2016.

FROM DINOSAURS TO PHARAOHS The show commenced with a heartwarming ‘prehistoric’ performance by the Little Tots and Playgroups. Dressed in adorable costumes that harked back to the age of dinosaurs, the children danced enthusiastically to the music.

Their efforts were rewarded with hearty applause and cheering.

The next performance took a leap through two thousand years to the golden age, to ancient Egypt, Pharaohs and treasures. The Primary 3 students impressed the audience with their short play, which had a distinctly spooky edge. Next stop was the era of the ancient Romans, brought to life by the Primary 4 students with an inspiring musical performance.

FROM KUNG FU FIGHTING TO VIKINGS Primary 1 students ushered us to ancient China and the era of the Tang Dynasty, twirling colourful umbrellas and breaking into kung fu moves. Next, we moved on to the age of the Vikings, with a creative percussion performance by our Primary 2 students.

Primary 5 students entered the stage solemnly dressed as monks, taking us back to Medieval Times. They danced gracefully and finished off the performance with a battle of the knights.

Next, Kindergarten students crept quietly onto the stage dressed as Native Americans, and retold native American history and culture through music.

Primary 6 students then took us through the evolution of dance, grooving to a mixture of hit songs from different decades. The performances finished with a magnificent flash mob, which saw principals, teachers, students and parents gathering on stage and dancing their hearts out. This brought the entire Swiss School family together once again and ended the event on high note.

FAREWELL SCHOOL YEAR, HELLO SUMMER Finally, all the students gathered on stage while our principal, Mr. Sacha Daehler, thanked all the teachers and students for their hard work, and our president, Rebekka Aicher Koch, gave a stirring speech. Then came a rousing rendition of the school song, after which Primary 6 bade us farewell by leaving the stage with the Kindergarten students.

A perfect ‘Summer Night’ ended with a delicious buffet dinner and lively socialising in the school’s courtyard.

These are a Few of the Hedleys’ Favourite Things!

Mark Hedley is a Brit with an Australian accent due to a relocation in his teens, Su Hee is Korean, and their equally handsome young sons, aged seven and four, have personalities as different as the proverbial chalk and cheese. However, they all love the Swiss Club.

Residents of Singapore for 11 years, the Hedleys joined the Swiss Club in 2012, to meet the changing needs of their growing family.

“We wanted the kids to have somewhere to run around and play. We chose the Swiss Club for its family-friendly atmosphere and sporting facilities. It had everything we needed,” recalled Mark.

Su Hee added: “We especially like the pool. You can easily observe the kids and the setup is quite fun, with the little changing hut for the kids.”

The Hedleys make full use of the sports activities and grounds. Apart from frequenting the gym, Mark likes to go hiking and walking. Both Luca and Alex have taken Aquaducks classes and attended the summertime Lego Camp, while Luca has attended the summertime Multi-sports Camp.

ODD WORKING HOURS AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE A fit and youthful-looking 47-year-old, Mark is the Global Head of Recruitment Strategy for Deutsche Bank. His working hours start and end late, from 1pm to 11pm, to coincide with UK and US time zones. He tries to come to the gym in the mornings at least a couple of times a week, and relishes the peaceful atmosphere at the Club in the early hours of the day.

A gorgeous and statuesque 44-year-old, Su Hee is a part-time property agent. She appreciates the luxury of managing her own working hours, balancing time with her boys and time with clients. One of her favourite pastimes is to sit with a glass of wine at Pergola, watching her water-crazy sons splash around in the pool.

GOOD FOOD SERVED WITH A SMILE Our conversation inevitably led to food. When asked what they enjoyed most from the Club’s kitchens, Mark emphatically replied, “Butter chicken.”

Su Hee enjoys the Asian offerings and protein shakes, Luca likes to order the cheese tortellini with cream sauce, and Alex loves the banana splits at Pergola.

The Hedleys also bring a lot of friends to the Club, confident that they will enjoy the combination of good food, good service and great ambience.

“The staff are very friendly. They always remember my face and some have even memorised my membership number,” added Su Hee. EXPLORE MORE! When asked to share some insider’s tips with fellow Members, Mark volunteered this advice. “Take time to explore the grounds. Go beyond the pool and enjoy the whole property,” he urged, singling out the often-overlooked zip line and great walking trails through the jungle.

Salil and Mari were Summer Members who recently committed to full-time membership just as they are about to embark on parenthood.

LIFE-CHANGING CHOICES Salil is Head of Sales for Mastercard’s HomeSend, a vertical that specialises in cross-border payments. He left his native Bangalore in 2009, worked for a year in Cambodia and came to Singapore in 2010, where he met Mari when they shared an apartment together. She was working for a Japanese department store after doing tertiary studies in Sydney, Australia.

After choosing each other and then choosing Singapore as their country of choice for starting a family, Salil and Mari commenced their quest for a club.

“We’d been doing a recce of clubs in the area. We checked out the British Club, the Hollandse Club and the Swiss Club,” recalled Salil. For various reasons ranging from overcrowding to sub-par standards of service, other clubs were eliminated.

You feel as if you are in a resort in Singapore.

Salil “The Swiss Club ticked all the boxes for us,” said Salil.

COMPELLING CULINARY OFFERINGS Salil praised the culinary offerings of the Club. “We are foodies and often come here for lunch. The restaurants are really quite avant garde, and the service levels are good.”

In particular, Mari commended the Angus beef at Arbenz, while Salil complimented the Indian food. High praise indeed from an Indian-born foodie!

NOT ONLY… BUT ALSO… Salil and Mari also commended the Swiss Club for its upkeep of the premises, high standards of hygiene and wide range of facilities. They have already put up guests at The Guesthouse, Salil uses the gym, and both he and Mari are looking forward to the opening of the spa.

Salil and Mari also appreciate the Club’s relaxing ambience and lush tropical grounds. “You feel as if you are in a resort in Singapore,” said Salil.

Diana Cherishes Relationships The Swiss Club’s Account Executive for Payable, Diana Susanto strives to pay suppliers promptly and really appreciates the kindness and co-operation of her colleagues.

WIFE, MOTHER, WORKER, FRIEND A team member of the Swiss Club for three years, Indonesian-born Diana is a petite and young-looking 32-year-old.

She is married to a Singaporean engineer who works at LTA, and has a daughter, Karen, aged one year eight months.

In her previous position, Diana recalls that she was constantly being chased for payment. Not so at the Swiss Club. “On

A DESTINATION FOR CELEBRATIONS Diana offered this advice for Members: “This is a great place for wedding parties and birthday parties. There is ample space for the kids to run around while the adults enjoy themselves,” suggested Diana.

We’re excited to announce the arrival of new artwork that will be temporarily gracing the walls of The Guesthouse at the Swiss Club.

TALENTED WOMEN, UNITED BY ART The works at The Guesthouse have been produced by a collective of artists who work from Patricia Cabaleiro’s studio in enchanting Wessex Estate. Patricia Cabaleiro is a fine artist from Brazil/Germany who opened her studio in 2007. It is a space for women from all over the world to gather together and take pleasure in sharing their creative process and painting.

Some of the artists whose works are on display at The Guesthouse recently took part in the Affordable Art Fair for the second year running. The exhibition is a rotating installation that features new visual pieces from diverse artists, many of whom have shown their work at other venues. For the next four months, you will have the chance to see paintings by Marleen Aldorf and Montse Oliver and Inken von der Luehe.

Montse Oliver Montse started painting in 2006, when she returned to her homeland Spain and joined an art school in Barcelona.

Inken von der Luehe South East Asia has been Inken’s home for the last 18 years. Currently she lives and works in Singapore. Her artistic journey began after an enlightening trip to India in 2010. Oktoberfest is a right royal excuse for copious consumption of beer, frolicking with dirndl-clad Fräulein and general revelry. Quench your curiosity with these 10 fun facts – and dazzle your drinking companions with your impressive knowledge!

1. It all started as a wedding celebration…

Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. The townspeople of Munich were invited to celebrate the nuptials at a free-for-all party in the field outside the city gates. And so the first of many Oktoberfests was born…

4. 1854 was a very dry year…

In 1854, Oktoberfest was cancelled after 3,000 residents of Munich died during a cholera epidemic.

2. The Wiesn is where it all happens…

The grassed area in Munich where Oktoberfest takes place was dubbed Theresienwiese, or ‘grassland of Therese’, in honour of Princess Therese. It was later shortened to ‘Wiesn’ by the locals. The short form has stuck, and is used as a synonym for Oktoberfest.

5. The opening announcement is…

'O'zapft is!’, meaning ‘It is tapped!’ is announced by the mayor of Munich to herald the start of the celebrations. At Oktoberfests around the world, the Guest of Honour will echo the call to cue the commencement of festivities.

3. No more horsing around…

The first Oktoberfest was closed with horse races in the presence of the royal family. However, the horse races, which were the oldest and at one time the most popular event of the festival, are no longer held today.

6. Drink local or go thirsty…

At the Munich Oktoberfest, all beer served in the tents must be from one of Munich's six breweries–Paulaner, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Augustiner, Hofbräu and Löwenbräu.

8. ‘Snow’ that’s why it starts in September…

In 1896, the 17-year-old Albert Einstein once worked as a hired hand to screw in the lightbulbs in the Schottenhamel tent, whose owners wanted to be the first to utilise the wonder of electric lighting.

In its birthplace of Munich, the 16-day Oktoberfest begins in September to deliberately avoid the high chance of snow in October.

9. All good tents come to those who wait…

As a host, you have to officially apply for a permission to build a tent on the Wiesn, the 103-acre site in Munich where the annual Oktoberfest is held. There is a waiting period of around 20 years, and it is contingent upon one of the current hosts giving up their tent site.

10. From Oktoberfest with love…

Every year, a special Oktoberfest Post Office is set up in the Wiesn to accommodate the vast number of postcards and souvenirs sent from Oktoberfest revellers to every corner of the globe.
