Welcome to Prize Day 2025, the most important day in our calendar as we gather to celebrate all that our pupils have achieved this academic year.
This is an especially important day for our Leavers, and a proud and emotional day for their families as they watch their loved ones move on to the next exciting chapters in their lives. Personally, it is not their achievements that make me feel most proud but the people they have become. So often, Breconians strike the right balance between confidence and humility; they are well-mannered whilst maintaining a twinkle of mischief and a wonderful sense of humour. I hope that never changes.
Our Leavers are ready for all that comes next, and they go with the love, good wishes and blessings of us all in the Christ College community. Congratulations to all our winners, and Godspeed to the Leavers of 2025.

A very warm welcome to all members of the Christ College community as we celebrate Prize Day at the end of another busy, successful academic year. On the back of record-breaking A-Level results in 2024, the school has been purposefully and positively engaged throughout the year culminating in today’s prizes and celebrations recognising pupil achievement both in and beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The following quote from our Estyn report published in January 2025 typifies the ethos of a Christ College Prize Day – “pupils demonstrate exemplary manners and celebrate each other’s achievements with sincerity and enthusiasm.” I couldn’t agree more with this judgement and very much hope you enjoy this year’s Prize Day!

Harry Mackridge Deputy Head (Academic)

Investment in and engagement with the second curriculum has continued apace this year as part of our commitment to developing the whole person. Participation rates across Sport, Music, Drama and Adventure are extremely high and reflect the enthusiasm for the range of activities available to our pupils. The benefits to our pupils are extensive and set them apart as team players. This ‘can do’ approach pervades all that we do at Christ College and the pupils deserve great credit for perpetuating this important school value through the year.
We celebrate elite performance today whilst acknowledging the many contributions from their peers and coaches that have helped them achieve such notable success. The awards and trophies that we look forward to presenting today recognise this fact and are testament to a thriving school community.

The CCB Foundation is the main school charity established to hold funds to secure the future of Christ College and to offer support to the school when required.
The funds of the Foundation grow because of donations made by Old Breconians and their families, and by parents and benevolent friends of Christ College. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to offer a wide range of life-changing Bursaries to motivated and talented young people who may not otherwise be able to join the school.
In September 2024 we were similarly able to award Scholarships to 14 new Sixth Formers and 3 younger pupils in recognition of their excellence and talent. These new scholars joined those already supported through the Foundation and its funds. They include Academic Scholars, All-Round Scholars and Sports Scholars as well as Scholars with specialisms in Music, Art and Drama.
With the imposition of VAT on school fees, the Foundation has recently played an important part in helping to ease the burden on parents. To continue its work in supporting the school, the Foundation now needs your support more than ever.

We are delighted to announce the five L6 Scholars who have been translated to named scholars for their U6 in recognition of their proven record of scholarship and commitment.
Awarded to a L6 scholar for a high level of academic scholarship in a specific area.
Revd Daniel Lewis Lloyd (Headmaster 1879-90), later appointed Bishop of Bangor, was committed to encouraging high academic standards in young people. As well as being a scholarly Classicist, he was also a great moderniser and widened the curriculum to include the study of science and actively encouraged participation in sport. The Bishop Lloyd Scholar is named in recognition of Bishop Lloyd’s transformative influence on Christ College during its Victorian re-foundation.

I am currently studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. With interests lying within the functioning of the body and its biochemical mechanisms, these subjects provide me with the opportunity to cover these topics in depth and beyond the confines of each syllabus. My recent research into neurodegenerative disease has honed my ability to articulate scientific ideas. Looking onwards, I aspire to study medicine at university and will concurrently continue to research areas that fascinate me. I am incredibly grateful to be named as the Bishop Lloyd Scholar, and I look forward to representing the school with pride in the year ahead.
Awarded to a L6 scholar for high academic achievement, and excellence in critical thinking and oracy.
James R Atkin (School House 1879-85) left Christ College with scholarship to Magdelen College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn. At the relatively young age of 45 he became a judge of the King’s Bench of the High Court, and later a Lord of Appeal. The importance of many of his judgements make him universally known in the world of law. Lord Atkin is perhaps our most distinguished Old Breconian. The Lord Atkin Scholar is named in recognition of Lord Atkin’s distinguished career as an advocate and judge.
Awarded to a L6 scholar for excellence in at least one area of the curriculum and a high level of commitment to school life.
The 2025/26 Lord Atkin Scholar is Harrison Fec
I study Mathematics, Physics, Religious Studies, and Further Mathematics. Religious Studies explores a large variety of cultural perspectives and philosophical arguments, which has helped me develop my own theological and philosophical beliefs. Along with mathematical and logical approaches to reasoning applied in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, RS has cultivated my ability to organise arguments and rationalise multiple viewpoints with equal consideration. I am fortunate to have been able to apply these skills as a part of the school's debating team, having participated in both internal and external competitions, including ESU, Cambridge, and Oxford debating. I aspire to study Mathematics and Philosophy at Oxford.

The Emma Taylor Scholar is named for E L C Taylor who was the school’s first female Head (Head 2007-17). She is currently the Warden and CEO of the Dean Close Foundation. In her ten years as Head of Christ College, ELCT oversaw a number of changes including the development of the Faculty structure and the construction of the Hubert Jones Science Centre and Y Neuadd Goffa. An avid believer in the importance of high standards in an allround education, she was also responsible for a radical overhaul of School Colours in 2008 to reward all-round commitment to school life as well as excellence in one area.
The 2025/26 Emma Taylor Scholar is Sophie Pickup
I am studying English Literature, History, Religious Studies, and Performing Arts, and take part in extracurricular activities such as Head’s Essay Society, Choir, Hockey, Netball, Drama and Music. My contributions in Drama have enhanced my confidence with public speaking, and my participation in the Head’s Essay Society has helped me to expand my knowledge of relevant topics in the world, whilst improving my ability to articulate an effective argument during intellectual discussions and debates. I am incredibly grateful that the unique and diverse array of opportunities available at the school has enabled me to develop all aspects of my personal character. I am honoured to be named the Emma Taylor Scholar.

Awarded to a L6 sports scholar for excellence in their chosen sport and a high level of commitment to school sport.
The Phil Skinner Sports Scholar is named for Phil Skinner (Donaldson’s 1977-82) and given in recognition of his active support and generosity. Phil Skinner left school to join the family business and is Managing Director of Ron Skinner & Sons. As an ardent fan of all sports, he has long been a friend to Christ College and an enthusiastic supporter of sport at the school.
The 2025/26 Phil Skinner Sports Scholar is Beth Howell

I joined Christ College in the Sixth Form and currently study Biology, Chemistry and Business. Since joining the school, my sport has developed and excelled in all areas. I have continuously benefited from the amount of support I have received from coaches and teammates throughout. The sense of belonging has allowed me to perform in all aspects, whether that be individually or in a team. I have enjoyed my time playing sports in school this year with my favourites being Hockey, Rugby and Cricket, and also enjoyed representing the school. I have made some unforgettable memories during the year, and I am grateful to be named the Phil Skinner Scholar for the coming year.
Awarded to a L6 Music Scholar for musical excellence and a high level of commitment to school music.
The Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is named for W Hugh Phillips (School House Blue 1952-59) in recognition of his active support and generosity. Hugh Phillips left school to study at the Cardiff University School of Optometry. After joining his father’s practice in 1964, he built up optometry practices across Gwent. He also served as a magistrate for more than 25 years, and as High Sheriff of Gwent in 2010. He has long been a friend to the school and a devoted supporter of music at Christ College.
The 2025/26
Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is Kurumi Tajiri

I'm studying Economics, Physics and Maths. Christ College has provided me the opportunity to learn both musical theory and take instrumental lessons. One of the things I have enjoyed most at school is taking part in a weekly string trio. It has taught me the joy of making music with others and growing together as an ensemble. These sessions have deepened my love for music beyond solo playing. Receiving a named scholarship is a real honour. It enables me to continue developing as a musician through lessons and preparation for my National Youth Orchestra audition. I'm truly grateful for this recognition and excited to continue my musical journey in my final year at Christ College.

School House Red. Summer 1986.
With a thriving school population of boys and girls, it is easy to forget that Christ College was founded as a school for boys in 1541 and that its profile remained the same for more than four centuries.
When Sally Stewart joined the Sixth Form in September 1985, she changed history. Though girls from the local St David’s Convent School had attended some examination classes at Christ College since 1967, Sally was the first girl to enrol into Christ College when she joined as a Day Girl in School House Red. Sally was immediately a popular member of the school, and her gentle presence convinced everyone that co-education was an important step forward for the school.
The place of girls in the school population was further secured when seven more girls joined Christ College Sixth Form in September 1986. Nominally members of School House Blue for their L6, the girls stayed with staff while a new House was built. De Winton opened with 20 Sixth Form girls in September 1987, looked
after by Houseparents Jon and Liz Reece, and resident tutor Alison Hembrow who was also the first full-time female teacher at Christ College and the first female sports coach.
From the outset, the de Winton girls were determined to make their mark. The historic milestones they achieved include the first girls hockey and netball captains, the first girls hockey match, the first (ever) hockey match against Llandovery, the first hockey tour, the first girls’ teams to enter national competitions, the first girl to join the CCF, the first girls to compete in House debating and drama competitions, the first female Oxbridge success, the first female Editor of ‘The Breconian’, the first female Head of House, the first female Deputy Head of School.
With usually 40 Sixth Form girls in a school population of 340, they were considerably outnumbered in all classes and at all school events but the de Winton girls made the most of every opportunity with enthusiasm, mutual support and a real sense of fun. The effect on the school was transformative.

Ten years after Sally’s arrival, 21 junior and middle school girls (Years 7-11) joined the school in September 1995. Looked after in Bannau House by Housemistress Denise Worsley and a team of tutors, they energetically threw themselves into everything and they too made their mark.
There were other milestones too. With six new girls in Year 7, the boys of 1995/96 were the first Year 7 cohort to experience mixed classes for all of their time at Christ College.
The successful change to full co-education led to an increased number of girls throughout the school, and a second house for girls was soon needed. Marking a further break with old traditions, Donaldson's House, a house for boys since 1880, was re-opened for girls in September 1998.
Ten years after the opening of de Winton House, two boarding houses for girls and a mixed junior house enabled and encouraged the evolution of co-education. Under the leadership of Lynne Webber, supported by

Chris Webber and a team of Tutors, the "Donnie's" girls soon made their mark as individuals and often in competitive rivalry with de Winton.
The rest - as they say - is history. In the year ahead, we will be celebrating 40 years of co-education at Christ College. Follow us on social media to learn about the fearless pioneers who nudged the school towards becoming the Christ College we know today.
