Welcome

Welcome to Prize Day 2024, the most important day in our calendar as we gather to celebrate all that our pupils have achieved this academic year.

This is an especially important day for our Leavers, and a proud and emotional day for their families as they watch their loved ones move on to the next exciting chapters in their lives. Personally, it is not their achievements that make me feel most proud but the people they have become. Breconians strike the right balance between confidence and humility; they are well-mannered whilst maintaining a twinkle of mischief and a wonderful sense of humour. I hope that never changes.

Our Leavers are ready for all that comes next and they go with the love, good wishes and blessings of us all in the Christ College community. Congratulations to all our winners, and Godspeed to the Leavers of 2024.

CHRIST COLLEGE BRECON PRIZE DAY

Life outside the classroom has provided our pupils with a multitude of activities aiming to stretch and challenge. Elite pathways continue to be the beacon for many of our top performers and for the majority of our pupils, participation and competition remain the driving forces. The second curriculum is well named, complementing and supporting our core business of academic improvement.

The ‘work hard, play hard’ philosophy pervades all that we do. Christ College provides a platform for our players, performers and artists to derive the sense of achievement, improvement and belonging that their efforts merit. The prizes and trophies presented today recognise this fact, and are proudly won and cherished by our school community.

I am delighted to be awarding these prizes at the end of another busy, successful Christ College academic year. The pupils listed as prize recipients have shone through as beacons of intellectual generosity and all are genuine role models to the wider school community. The prizes reflect a truly wide range of academic aptitudes, interests and effort beyond the basic demands of subject and curricula duly studied.

In a world of increased competition and outstanding performance in public examinations, it has never been more important to stand out from the crowd. These prizes ably facilitate our pupils in doing just that and are fitting reward for their approach in and beyond the classroom during 2023/24.

Many congratulations to you all – I do hope you enjoy the occasion and reflect on a stellar

The House Competition

The annual House Competition challenges pupils across eighteen events that represent all areas of the Second Curriculum.

Some events such as Sports Day and House Drill are also the focus of our celebrated Spirit Days, when parents and pupils come together to support House and School in a spirit of connectedness.

The eventual winners are decided by a tally of carefully kept points, and tensions mount as the last few events take place. The sense of belonging that shines through each day at school, perhaps shines most brightly on House Competition days.

The 2024 winners of the House Competition will be announced during today’s proceedings.

CHRIST COLLEGE BRECON PRIZE DAY

The Foundation

The CCB Foundation is the main school charity established to hold funds to secure the future of Christ College and to offer support to the school when required. Within the Foundation, the Bursary Fund and the Scholarship Fund enable Christ College to support pupils through bursaries and scholarships.

The funds grow because of donations made by Old Breconians and their families, and by parents and benevolent friends of Christ College. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to offer a wide range of life-changing Bursaries to motivated and talented young people who may not otherwise be able to join the school.

In September 2023 we were similarly able to award Scholarships to 13 new Sixth Formers and 6 younger pupils in recognition of their excellence and talent. These new scholars joined those already supported through the Foundation and its funds. They include Academic Scholars, All-Round Scholars and Sports Scholars as well as Scholars with specialisms in Music, Art and Drama.

This year, for the first time, five L6 Scholars have been translated to named Scholars for their U6 in recognition of their proven record of scholarship and commitment.

Bishop Lloyd Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for a high level of academic scholarship in a specific area.

Revd Daniel Lewis Lloyd (Headmaster 18791890), later appointed Bishop of Bangor, was committed to encouraging high academic standards in young people. As well as being a scholarly Classicist, he was also a great moderniser and widened the curriculum to include the study of science and actively encouraged participation in sport. The Bishop Lloyd Scholar is named in recognition of Bishop Lloyd’s transformative influence on Christ College during its Victorian re-foundation.

The 2024/25 Bishop Lloyd Scholar is Harley Townsend (L6 Orchard House)

“I am studying Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics. I have a particular interest in how chemistry allows us to build within the world and understand more about how our universe works.

I plan to study aerospace engineering in University, and aim to work for the European Space Agency. I was previously studying at a state school in Swansea, and the Kelvin Bryon Award has given me the opportunity to further my studies within a highly productive academic environment in ways I previously wouldn't have had access to.

I am very grateful for such support, and feel very proud to be named as the 2024 Bishop Lloyd Scholar.”

Lord Atkin Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for high academic achievement, and excellence in critical thinking and oracy.

James R Atkin (School House 1879-85) left Christ College with scholarship to Magdelen College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn. At the relatively young age of 45 he became a judge of the King’s Bench of the High Court, and later a Lord of Appeal. The importance of many of his judgements make him universally known in the world of law. Lord Atkin is perhaps our most distinguished Old Breconian. The Lord Atkin Scholar is named in recognition of Lord Atkin’s distinguished career as an advocate and judge.

The 2024/25 Lord Atkin Scholar is Tadhg Iley (L6 Senior Hub)

“I am studying Economics, Mathematics and Geography. Both Economics and Geography provide me with the opportunity to analyse affairs and make assessments on present matters, whilst Mathematics encourages me to dissect data and make a reasoned answer.

My participation in the Head’s Essay Society and debating have honed my ability to articulate complex ideas and engage in intellectual debates. The unique opportunities offered to me by Christ College have significantly shaped my academic and personal development for which I am forever grateful. I aspire to attend a Russell Group University, afterwards pursuing a Master’s degree internationally.”

Emma Taylor Scholar

Awarded to a L6 scholar for excellence in at least one area of the curriculum and a high level of commitment to school life.

The Emma Taylor Scholar is named for E L C Taylor who was the school’s first female Head (Head 2007-2017). She is currently the Warden and CEO of the Dean Close Foundation. In her ten years as Head of Christ College, ELCT oversaw a number of changes including the development of the Faculty structure and the construction of the Hubert Jones Science Centre and Y Neuadd Goffa. An avid believer in the importance of high standards in an allround education, she was also responsible for a radical overhaul of School Colours in 2008 to reward all-round commitment to school life as well as excellence in one area.

The 2024/25 Emma Taylor Scholar is Elsie Jones (L6 Senior Hub)

“I study English Literature, History, and Economics and enjoy taking part in the Head’s Essay Society, Debating, Choir and CCF. All these opportunities have given me a grounding in current affairs to help support my aim to study Economics and International Relations at University. Christ College has also provided me with the opportunity to hone my musical skills, not only with the Chapel Choir but also individually as a singer. I hope to gain my ARSM Diploma in Singing before finishing school next year. I am incredibly grateful to be the Emma Taylor Scholar, and I look forward to continuing to represent the school both as a Scholar and as the Head of School in 2024/25.”

Phil Skinner Sports Scholar

Awarded to a L6 sports scholar for excellence in their chosen sport and a high level of commitment to school sport.

The Phil Skinner Sports Scholar is named for Phil Skinner (Donaldson’s 1977-1982) and given in recognition of his active support and generosity. Phil Skinner left school to join the family business and is Managing Director of Ron Skinner & Sons. As an ardent fan of all sports, he has long been a friend to Christ College and an enthusiastic supporter of sport at the school.

The 2024/25 Phil Skinner Sports Scholar is Alexander Morris (L6 School House)

“I joined Christ College for the Sixth Form. I study Geography, Business and BTEC Sport. Though I have played sport from a young age, I feel I have really benefitted while playing sport at Christ College because of the help and time given to me in each sport.

I have enjoyed playing in the senior Rugby, Cricket and Hockey teams and I love representing the school with everything I take part in.

I am honoured to be recognised as the inaugural Phil Skinner Sports Scholar - it means a lot to me.”

Hugh Phillips Music Scholar

Awarded to a L6 Music Scholar for musical excellence and a high level of commitment to school music.

The Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is named for W Hugh Phillips (School House Blue 1952-59) in recognition of his active support and generosity. Hugh Phillips left school to study at the Cardiff University School of Optometry. After joining his father’s practice in 1964, he built up optometry practices across Gwent. He also served as a magistrate for more than 25 years, and as High Sheriff of Gwent in 2010. He has long been a friend to the school and a devoted supporter of music at Christ College.

The 2024/25 Hugh Phillips Music Scholar is Ben McLean (L6 Orchard House)

“I am studying Music, English and Psychology. Throughout school I have been involved in musical groups such as chapel choir and chamber ensembles. My adaptability as a musician has grown significantly and, as a soloist specialising in the piano and the organ, my skills have been finely tuned by exceptional teaching and opportunities to perform.

I am honoured to be the Hugh Phillips Music Scholar and grateful for the generous support given by him, especially to the extremely competitive ‘Musician Of The Year’. In the future I aim to maintain my passion for music through university and into later life.”

The Armorial Bearings

The Arms of Christ College were granted by the College of Arms in 1976, and generously gifted by Wing Commander Roydon Griffiths (School House 1920-25). The original Grant of Arms hangs in the Clive Richards Room.

The ‘h’ denotes the owner of the crown, our Founder King Henry VIII. The larger cross is a black cross taken from the arms of Bishop Barlow of St. Davids, who persuaded King Henry VIII to found the College of Christ of Brecknock in 1541.

The tower is a reference to Queen Eleanor of Castile (1241-1290), whose own Arms contained a castle. She was the earliest known benefactor of the Friary of Saint Nicholas, the Dominican Friary on which site the College stands.

A lion comes from the top of the tower, and is derived from the arms of Queen Eleanor

and Bishop Barlow. The lion is crowned referring to the fact that the sovereign is Visitor of the College.

Around the shoulders of the lion is a red mantle trimmed with ermine, taken from the Arms of Brecon. The fish the lion holds in its paws is a pike (or ‘luce’) and this forms part of the Arms of Bishop Lucy, who did much in the seventeenth century to restore the chapel after the depredations during the Commonwealth period.

The Arms are completed by mantling (drapery) tied to the helmet above the shield. Mantling donates royalty in heraldry. The shading represents green and gold, the colours of the school, as well as the two shades of blue worn as the school’s everyday colours.
