My dear people of Christ Church Cathedral, and our guests,

I’m so happy that many of you, young and old, have come this morning adorned with your Halloween finery. It represents a sense of imagination and joy that we would all do well to embrace. We need imagination to see and hear God in the world about us—and if we are to live fully into our faith.

Even if you are not in-costume, your heart can reflect the spirit of adventure that the rest of us are wearing openly. Join us as we thank God for the gift of our imagination.

Today is the deadline for submitting names of friends and family who have died this year.

We will speak their names on All Saints’ Sunday. Please complete the naming form and place it in the offering basin as it comes around.

Adult Bible Study

Every Sunday, 9:15 a.m. in the library Tom Peters leads a group in reading and studying through the Bible. The group is working its way through the Letters of St. Paul. You are invited to join the group at any time.

we work Laundry Love, a Diocesan Urban Ministry Initiative: November 14 Laundry Love provides assistance to individuals and families that do not have washers/dryers or cannot afford to add expensive laundry costs to their budget. We help fund Laundry Love through your contributions to DEO (Downtown Episcopal Outreach). Laundry Love happens every 2nd Thursday, 5:30-8 p.m. at Aunt Bee’s Laundromat, 2nd and Ormsby. Contact Dorothy Converse if you are interested in helping on 2nd Thursday.

Justice Ministry

Since early September our CCC CLOUT Team has conducted four House Meetings, and continues to make some individual contacts during this Listening Process. We welcome those who have committed to be Network Members for this coming year. Our next major event is the Community Problems Assembly, on October 29. All Network members from the 20+ CLOUT member congregations meet together to hear stories from the house meetings and to hear updates from the authorities who made promises at the Nehemiah Action last Spring. Did they accomplish what they committed to do? If so, what progress has been made? If not, what is being done to follow up?

As we move into the Research-to-Action phase of CLOUT’s year, Network members can continue to work in any of the four active issue groups: Affordable Housing, Decriminalization of Mental Illness & Addiction, Restorative Practices in public schools, and Older Adult Concerns. There is always much work to be done! Questions? Talk to any of CCC’s Team: Page Curry, Mildred Franks, and Terry Laun. It is not too late to become part of this Justice Ministry.

Kentucky Refugee Ministries

Consider supporting KRM which works to relocate refugees in Louisville. What your gift can do: $25 provides a blanket for a refugee child, $50 provides a monthly bus pass for an adult seeking work, $75 provides groceries for a family’s first week in Kentucky, $100 assists with medications for a sick mother, $150 assists with a heating bill for a 1-bedroom apartment, $500 assists with rent for a family’s new apartment, $1,000 assists a family if someone gets ill and can’t work, $2,500 co-sponsors a new family for three months. Coffee In the Hall We need donations of gloves, socks and large and extra large T shirts!

Each weekday morning from 8 am to 12:30 pm the hallway in the link building is open to our neighbors. This allows them the chance to come in for a break from the heat/cold/rain, use the restroom, and have a cup of coffee or a bottled water. You can help with this ministry by donating 4-pound bags of sugar, cans of ground coffee, or bottled water to the Cathedral Office.

Next Community Breakfast is November 3

The next Community Breakfast is November 3, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., in Bishops’ Hall. Serving our friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners is one of the most rewarding ministries at Christ Church Cathedral. In addition to serving breakfast, personal care and food items are always accepted for the food pantry and Central Louisville Community Ministry. Contact Randy Peters if you would like to help or just come.

Urban Ministry Partnership

The Cathedral is part of a group of parishes in-town and in surrounding neighborhoods that works to create relationships with our downtown neighbors.

The Partnership sponsors Laundry Love and has offered joint coffee hours and neighborhood picnics for service and fellowship. The intown parishes are Calvary, the Cathedral, Our Merciful Savior and St. George’s. Supporting parishes are Advent, St. Clement and St. Thomas.

Uniting Partners for Women and Children Uniting Partners for Women and Children (UP) provides a safe place to rest, build community, and find resources needed for women and children to reclaim their lives such as showers, laundry, access to a phone and mailing address and connections to housing, employment, and financial benefits. UP provides resources and referrals through case management and a partnership of providers and assists homeless women and youth with obtaining ID’s and birth certificates.

UP is growing its volunteer base and is in need of volunteers to help in 2-hour shifts from 9 am to 11 am and 11 am to 1 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You can learn more about UP and how you can help at uplouisville. org and on social media.

Downtown Episcopal Outreach (DEO)

Don’t be afraid of CHANGE—put it in the DEO Pig! DEO supports Laundry Love, Kentucky Refugee Ministry and addresses gap needs that arise in service agencies throughout central Louisville. Using the Dean’s Discretionary Fund, and working with outreach partners including Central Louisville Community Ministries, Our Merciful Savior Episcopal Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church, we help with expenses such as ID application fees, prescription drugs, utilities, and some transportation costs. You can help by contributing to the Dean’s Discretionary Fund, and by putting coins and bills in the DEO Piggy Bank.

Johnson Service Corps

One of our young parishioners, Isabel Watkins, is beginning a year of ministry with the Johnson Service Corps, “a diverse, ecumenical community of young adults dedicated to service and social justice” in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC. Isabel’s year with JSC will be spent attending to social justice, leadership development, spiritual formation, and intentional community living.

Give thanks for Isabel and pray for her as she does this good work.

Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) is the compassionate response of The Episcopal Church to human suffering in the world.

Hearing God’s call to seek and serve Christ in all persons and to respect the dignity of every human being, ERD serves to bring together the generosity of Episcopalians and others with the needs of the world. ERD faithfully administers the funds that are received from the Church and raised from other sources. Central Louisville Community Ministries

Central Louisville Community Ministries (CLCM), formerly Help Ministries of Central Louisville, is one of the oldest community ministries in the city of Louisville. It was created in 1968 by ministers in the downtown area to respond in a structured way to the requests for help that came to churches.

CLCM gives direct and personal assistance to residents of the central Louisville community who are in need; to provide a place where residents feel welcome and can receive referrals and shortterm emergency assistance; to advocate on behalf of clients for the improvement of the quality of assistance from providers of public and private services; to create and implement programs that build a sense of community among clients, churches, businesses, and the public and private social sectors; and to provide opportunities to fulfill their urban missions by combining their resources, both financial and human.

Welcome Ministry

Have you ever gone to a church for the first time and no one spoke to you as you entered? That is a Greeter’s role of outreach--to make a person feel welcome as they enter a church for the first time. It requires only about 15-20 minutes each time you greet and it is beneficial to the greeter as much as the one greeted. If you would like to help with this important service to the church, please contact the Dean or Bobbie Fritton.

Cathedral Stories are videos created by Cathedral parishioners (with the help of the Communications Task Force) to share their experience at the Cathedral with the rest of us. Office Hours

The Cathedral building is open from 9 am til 4:30 pm. To see Frazier Marsh, Parish Administrator, come between 9:00 and 11:00 am. However, if you have a pastoral care need at any time and cannot get through, the pastoral care line is always open 502-632-3213.

Digital Giving

A campaign has been created for online giving with an option to give for general support. The goal is unlimited, but in the future items can be added with specific goals if needed. Payments are made online through Amazon.com with a credit or debit card. The Cathedral will receive a check each month less a 5% payment processing fee. A report will be emailed monthly as well, listing details of each contribution. Campaigns can be accessed using the Donate link at the top of our website. A link will need to be added for mobile.

• This past quarter fifty-five households participated in the Kroger Community Rewards program, contributing $304 to our operating budget.

• The Cathedral reaps the financial benefits every time you use your Kroger Plus Card.

Here’s how to register online: • Visit www.kroger.com/communityrewards and hit “Create an Account.”

• Register your Kroger Plus Card number.

• Once you are registered, you’ll see a tab that says “Kroger Community Rewards.” Hit the “Enroll” tab.

• You will be asked for the company name or number. For best results, enter the Cathedral company number, 11088.

• Confirm “Christ Church Cathedral” as your charity and you are signed up.

• Next time you shop, double check that your Kroger receipt notes Christ Church Cathedral as your recipient.

Parking at the Cathedral

Parking has been arranged for Sunday mornings at 3 locations: the Transamerica Parking Lot adjacent to Cathedral Commons (Sunday mornings only), at the corner of 2nd and Muhammed Ali; the old “Midas Lot” behind the Cathedral and entered by 1st St. at Louisville Surgical Center entrance; and the YMCA Garage on 2nd St. The Transamerica lot is only to be used for Sunday mornings (you will be towed if you park there at other times). The old “Midas Lot” can also be used on Sunday mornings and in the evenings and on Saturday when the Louisville Surgical Center is closed. The YMCA Garage can be used at anytime although there may be a parking fee depending on day and time. We will continue to work on other options.

A greeting card program for Christ Church Cathedral parish has been developed to recognize special and significant days – birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and to reach out to the homebound and to express condolences. Adults with current e-mail addresses will receive e-cards from caring@christchurchlouky. org. When the animated portion ends, wait for your personal message screen to appear. Paper cards will be mailed to our children, youth and to folks without e-mail. Please add caring@ christchurchlouky.org to your e-mail addresses so that your e-cards will reach your inbox. To assure receipt of e-cards, please inform the church office of a new or updated e-mail address (after the 2017 Directory listings). Thank you!

Membership in the Episcopal Church

Episcopal Church membership is automatic in the parish at which you were baptized or confirmed, and you can easily move your membership when you relocate. If you would like to become an Episcopalian or to move your membership to the Cathedral, call the parish office, or leave your request with Dean Pritcher. The Cathedral will contact your former parish and make the necessary changes. You make the request, and the Cathedral will handle the paperwork.

COMMUNITY MATTERS Louisville Master Chorale Concert The first concert of the Louisville Master Chorale 2019-2020 season, Choral Fireworks, will be on Sunday November 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. We will present favorite choruses from Hayden’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s St. Paul, Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Brahm’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Beethoven’s Mount of Olives. It will be a wonderful afternoon of choral music. Tickets are $20 and you can get them from Chorale member Randy Peters or online at www.

Why do we pray, study, work, listen and build?

Benedict, the father of Benedictine spirituality, suggested that our life is best balanced between prayer, study, and work.

We have taken that challenge as the basis of our common life together at Christ Church Cathedral: We pray (worship and the arts).

We study (spiritual formation).

We work (service to others).

In addition, we know that we are sustained by our life together, and that works best when we listen to one another. We also aim to build and maintain a structure that will support all of our ministry efforts.

And so: We listen (cathedral life and fellowship), We build (administration).

In Cathedral Matters, you will find information about ministry opportunities at the Cathedral which fit into all five of these areas. Under each of the five main categories you will see what is new to the listing for this week. You will notice that some paragraphs repeat weekly, so that our guests won’t miss any news.

You are urged to take your Cathedral Matters home with you so that you will have it for ready reference.

Quarterly Report from the Endowment Corporation Two kinds of gratitude: the sudden kind we feel for what we take; the larger kind we feel for what we give.

The lectionary readings on October 13 focused on gratitude, and in her homily, Dean Pritcher described the extraordinary impact gratitude can make in our lives. It is with a sense of gratitude the Endowment Corporation thanks all those who have contributed to the endowment this year. The thoughtful gifts made from donors throughout the year really do make a difference.

Following are the third quarter endowment fund balances and distributions planned for 2020. The distributions will provide ongoing support for the vital work of the committees and projects supported by the Cathedral community.

During the third quarter, the Corporation received nine contributions totaling $2,970.

Year-to-date there have been 16 contributions totaling $5,045.

At September 30, account balances were:

• Investment Account 1057 (Endowment Unrestricted) - $1,015,335.89 • Investment Account 1059 (Lighting Fund) - $14,537.42 • Investment Account 1069 (Hast Easter Music Fund) - $56,323.62

The Corporation will make the following contributions to the Cathedral Chapter in support of the Cathedral’s 2020 operating budget: • $47,014.54 from the Endowment Unrestricted • $683.18 from the Lighting Fund • $2,729.52 from the Hast Easter Music Fund

You can make a contribution to the Cathedral’s Endowment Corporation Legacy Society, extending your commitment to future generations of Cathedral-goers and the long term work of the Cathedral.

There are several ways to make gifts to the endowment:

• Provide a bequest in your will ( you need only confirm your intention to make a gift in writing and you will part of the Corporation Legacy Society).

• Make a life-time gift of an IRA or tangible property, appreciated stock, or life insurance policy.

• Designate memorial and thank offering gifts be placed in the endowment.

• Make gifts to the endowment on a monthly basis by bank draft or check.

The Cathedral congregation is small and its members do much to share their time and talents, as well as make annual financial commitments to both operations and the Endowment. A gift to the endowment further secures the future of our nearly 200 year old church and its programs.

As we approach Advent in the following months, please consider making a gift to the endowment, especially at year-end. It is a wonderful and lasting way to memorialize and honor friends and relatives.
