The Time After Epiphany

THE VERY REVEREND CAROL WADE Dean & Rector

The time after the Epiphany, a season of revelation, begins with a great festival: The Baptism of Jesus.

FROM THE DEAN hen the joy of Christmas recedes, the decorations come down, and it’s back to our ordinary days, I wonder, do you feel let down, or a little relieved? If you’re like me, maybe you feel a bit of both. The good news is that the time after the Epiphany provides antidotes for both; two festive Sundays of great celebration frame three ordinary Sundays where we can settle in and catch our breath. In our Sunday Gospel readings during the time after the Epiphany, Jesus appears, not as a baby, but as a grown man, beginning his journey from baptism to public ministry, mountaintop revelation, and onward toward Jerusalem. The time after the Epiphany, a season of revelation, begins with a great festival: The Baptism of Jesus. Jesus learns who and whose he is and how deeply he is loved. Filled with the Spirit’s power, he is ready to begin his public ministry. On this day, we too learn of God’s deep love for us. We celebrate the sacrament of baptism and recommit ourselves to our public ministries of justice and love.

W

in the everyday opportunities and are given spiritual gifts for the journey. While our spiritual gifts are many, their purpose is one: Love. Yes, it is really that simple. To make God’s love known, the kind of love God shows to us in Jesus; that is our call. The season concludes with the Festival of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus is revealed as the Messiah—both suffering and triumphant upon a mountaintop. On this final festival of the Epiphany season, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Dazzling light foreshadows Christ’s resurrection as the glory of God shines forth in his presence. Alleluias punctuate this day as we prepare to “bury the alleluias” on Shrove Tuesday and enter the more somber season of Lent. The time after the Epiphany shows us that both our ordinary and extraordinary days are lived in the presence of God and the light of Christ. God’s glory is revealed in Joy and challenge, celebration and suffering, God uses every aspect of our lives, both ordinary and extraordinary, to make that glory known as we seek to share God’s love wherever life may lead.

The three ordinary Sundays that follow the Baptism of Jesus remind us that the Christian journey always beckons. Jesus has come to bring good news to the poor and to set captives free (Luke 4). He is even willing to give his life for the sake of Love. In our own way, we are called to follow Jesus through the ordinary pattern of our days. We hear of the power of God’s Spirit given to Jesus, and the gift of forgiveness for all. We are called to reveal the love of Christ

e value the children of our church, and we are committed to building sustainable youth and children’s ministries that are going to have a deep impact for our kids from birth and on into their teenage years. That’s why we are developing a game plan together to further support these ministries in growing from strength to strength. We have invited Ministry Architects to visit us on March 3 through March 6, 2016. (Learn more about them at www.ymarchitects. com.) Ministry Architects will spend the majority of their time listening to a variety of groups within the

to youth and children’s ministries around the country – and where it seems that God might be taking us next. On March 6 at 4pm, the report will be presented to the congregation in The Tilford Room laying out specific recommendations and a blueprint for how to move forward. In the near future we will announce the times and dates of the focused listening groups. We look forward to everyone's participation. We want your insights, your frustrations and your hopes and dreams to be heard. After spending 3 days in these listening groups, the Ministry Architects team will write a report, sharing with us what they’ve heard about the youth and children’s ministries – including assets, challenges, and how we compare

ART

“SACRED SITES – THE CHURCHES AND ART OF THE LEXINGTON DIOCESE” By Mike Slone

he 120th Convention of the Diocese of Lexington will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on February 19 & 20. In honor of the convention, Art at the Cathedral will host “Sacred Sites – The Churches and Art of the Lexington Diocese”, an exhibit featuring art, photos and histories from around the Diocese. This exhibit runs January 10 - March 6, 2016. The exhibit will feature a wide range of artwork, including tapestries by students at St. Augustine’s Chapel, pottery used for washing of the feet at the Church of the Nativity in Maysville, stained glass work from Our Savior in Richmond, wood carvings used as the model for the alter at Trinity Church in Covington, and everything in between. The photos highlight the beautiful physical space built by parishes for worship around the State. The histories give you a brief glimpse at the stories behind the origin of each parish and how most have struggled to survive war, economic turmoil and the ebb and flow of clergy and congregation over the years. Hopefully, the exhibit will inspire you to learn more about the Diocese and to venture out to explore all these wonderful places and meet your fellow Episcopalians.

CITY REACH

OUR ANGEL TREE By The Rev. Brent Owens

hank you for giving so generously to the children, families and individuals represented on our Angel Tree! Many from the Cathedral also helped with the “store” where the parents of Harrison Elementary students “shopped” for their child’s Christmas gifts where they could pick out a new outfit, shoes or a coat, toys, books, and other items like hats and gloves for each child. All of which were then gift wrapped. One mother and father told of the difficulties of raising four boys, ages 5, 4, 3 and 1, and how much Angel Tree meant to them and their children so they would have a good Christmas. Not only did 91 children from Harrison Elementary receive Christmas gifts, but also 25 Moveable Feast clients, 12 Room In The Inn guests, and the two daughters of our refugee family, Beyonce & Knowless, received Christmas gifts this year. Harrison Elementary has many students who live in poverty and some whose families are homeless. Cathedral members help with Moveable Feast, which provides hot meals to those who are living with HIV. And the Cathedral participates in Room In The Inn where 15 homeless men are hosted at the Cathedral each Wednesday evening, which included Christmas Eve this year. So many from Christ Church Cathedral helped with our Angel Tree in the giving of gifts, donations, wrapping presents, and assisting parents with the “shopping.” All we can say is thank you!! And we especially give thanks to Paige Kikuchi, chairperson of Angel Tree, and Carmen Wells, who organized the Angel Tree “store” at Harrison Elementary! “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:16

CHILDREN

A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT! By The Rev. Brent Owens

n Christmas Eve we were overwhelmed with angels, shepherds, sheep, a donkey, kings, a star for the kings to follow, all in adoration of the baby Jesus! At the 2:00pm Christmas Eve service baby Jesus was played by 3 month old Sloan Reeves (daughter of Adam & Sarah Reeves) in her debuting role. It was a wonderful and moving telling of the ancient story of Jesus’ birth seen through the eyes of our own children. We give thanks Kim Knight for organizing and directing this beautiful pageant! Also we are grateful for Bill Knight for bringing and operating the theater and star lights, and for the pageant assistants, Peggy Collins, Shelby Martin, and Amanda Tudor, and to the host of Cathedral volunteers for making this a memorable Christmas Eve!

A THOUSAND THANKS! By The Very Rev. Carol Wade

s I give thanks for the love that went into of our Advent and Christmas offerings, I am especially grateful for the gifts you faithfully offer. The compassion, care and artistry that you so freely share are testament to the Spirit at work in our lives. The flowers, music, movement, bulletins, logistical details, and outreach efforts have resounded with love throughout the season. From Advent to Christmas, many people have been invited and welcomed by our community to step into the heart of God’s love. We

A

shared angel tree gifts with those in need, fed and sheltered those who are homeless, gathered daily to pray for the needs of the world, visited the infirmed, and offered worship and concerts of great spiritual depth and beauty. We have received an outpouring of comments throughout the season that bespeak how meaningful our Advent and Christmas offerings have been to so many. And so I add my voice to this chorus of praise and offer my heartfelt thanks to you. What a joy it is to serve among you and I thank God for our ministry—and I thank God for you. May God in Christ be born in you this season and always. With gratitude, Carol+

Grace Notes We often receive words of gratitude and would like to share them with you. One of the blessings of being a pastor in discernment is going to a variety of churches. Tonight Susan Elliot House and I attended the performance of Messiah at Christ Church Cathedral Episcopal in Lexington. While most people were, I'm sure watching the musicians and choir, I was watching The Very Reverend Carol Wade, the rector and dean of the Cathedral. Rev. Wade had a smile on her face tonight that just said to me, "I like my job and I love these people." I've had the feeling before and it's a special thing. All in attendance stood during the Hallelujah chorus. Everyone was smiling. I looked around the sanctuary. It was full of people of all ages and economic and racial groups. All were of one accord, united by the music and the occasion. This is how I think God intends the world to be. The music concluded and the one thousand or so of us who were there walked back out into the night. We were not united anymore but we were all still God's children. How fitting that a church was, for a few hours, a place that united diverse peoples through the healing agency of music. Perhaps in this world of bitter, divisive soundbites we could benefit more from the gift of music and the presence of the faith practice of choice in our lives. The journey continues... -- Brian House, London, Kentucky (Posted on Facebook)

ART

NEW INFORMATION ON TITIAN’S MADONNA By Jesse Mark

r. Alice Christ of UK’s Art History Division brought new information on Titian’s Madonna in the Permanent Art Collection here at the Cathedral. While we know that it is a work by Kentucky artist Oliver Frazer entitled Titian’s Madonna, we couldn’t find the exact work which he copied, so we assumed that it was inspired by works by Titian which Frazer saw while he was in England and Europe back in the 1830’s. Dr. Christ did a broader search and proposed that it could be a copy of Raphael’s, The Mackintosh Madonna, in the National Gallery, London, which was in the National Gallery at the time of Frazer’s travels. The original had been painted on wood panel and was badly deteriorated. It was transferred to canvas in 1751. It was purchased by a party named Mackintosh and hence identified in that manner.

D

Here is a reflectogram of the painting, showing what the restorer had to work with. So new questions have to be asked: Did Frazer actually name the painting? Or did the buyer? Or did a member at the Cathedral give it its name? While mystery surrounds the title of the painting, the Frazer work remains a cherished possession of the Cathedral. It speaks to the generosity and artistic appreciation of its members.
