THE VERY REVEREND CAROL WADE Dean & Rector

For Advent is a preparation for the celebration of the Incarnation, God’s humble coming among us in the gift of Christ.

FROM THE DEAN

Ready or not, here I come!” As a young child, I loved playing the game hide and seek with my many cousins at family gatherings. Whether we were discovered in our hiding places or made it back to the base, the shouts of joy and the squeals of laughter at being “found” or being “home safe” were contagious. The season of Advent reminds me of that children’s game. Advent, from the Latin adventus, means arrival or coming. God is coming whether we are ready or not. For some of us, Advent is a time of joy. We eagerly anticipate festive gatherings with family and friends, sharing gifts and time away from our daily routine. For others, we may be feeling apprehensive. Perhaps it is a first Christmas without a loved one, or we worry about our ability to buy gifts or provide comfort for those in sickness or need. Whatever our situation, and ready or not, the season of Advent is shaped to create space for us to find and be found by God. For Advent is a preparation for the celebration of the Incarnation, God’s humble coming among us in the gift of Christ. How are you getting ready this year? In a season where preparation and expectation can turn to frenzy, a practice of daily prayer is never more needed. I suggest that you create space to begin your day in prayer. Perhaps your space for morning prayers is only the time it takes to wait for your coffee to brew, or perhaps you find your way to the Cathedral for our community service of Morning Prayer. Either way, pause, read a bit of scripture, or some short devotional ma-

"

terial, or just sit quietly in the presence of God. Listen for a word or phrase that catches your attention. Then commit to a practice of carrying that thought into the day and see how this Living Word changes your interactions with others. If we want God to find us, the good news is that God is ready and waiting. The season of Advent at Christ Church Cathedral is shaped to create space for God to find us through prayer and action. There is beloved music, meaningful worship, quiet days for contemplation and healing, and opportunities for service with others. Most of all, Advent at Christ Church is time to be one with God, each other and the world God so loves as we prepare to celebrate the Nativity of Christ. The beginning of a new liturgical year offers us time to pause and to create new space. Even in the busiest of days, we are called to rejoice in the wondrous gift that has already been given to us in Emmanuel, God with us. May you have a blessed Advent, and in this season of preparation and expectation, may you find and be found by God.

A RESPONSE TO THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS By The Rev. Kate Byrd

O

n Monday, November 30th, the Cathedral young adults joined together for Theology on Tap at the Byrds' home to discuss and learn more about the Syrian refugee crisis, and what we can do to help. Paula Ott, a leader of our diocesan efforts to support the Syrian refugees, also joined us to share her stories and stress the importance of reaching out to our government representatives, to encourage them to support the entry of refugees (including Syrians) into our country. As we joined to write letters to our Senators and Representative we shared stories of our family members, coworkers, friends, and neighbors who had come into our commu-

nities as refugees. These were individuals who had to flee their own homes, families, communities, and livelihoods for various but unfortunate reasons. Our stories shared one common theme, the importance of welcoming our neighbors. As these refugees made their lives and reared their families in our communities they became our neighbors. Hd they not been welcomed, they may never have had the opportunity to share their lives and their love with us. Presiding Bishop Curry recently shared as Episcopalians we are part of the Jesus movement, which centers on love. When we allow love to rule we make space in our hearts and in our lives to welcome our neighbor; and, when we welcome our neighbor we have the unique opportunity to see Christ and know his love through others. The young adults were living proof of the power of love, as we sought to turn our hearts toward justice, peace, and love. These busy individuals took time out of their lives to pause for a shared meal and a wonderful opportunity to participate in the Jesus Movement, as we seek to welcome our neighbor.

Advent Morning Prayer Advent Weekdays, November 30 - December 23 8:00am in the Chapel If you would like to read or oďŹƒciate at Morning Prayer, please contact The Rev. Brent Owens at bowens@ccclex.org or 254-4497. We will walk you through this simple service.

WHAT A JOY IT IS! By Amanda Tudor

W

e are sharing with you the text of Amanda Tudor's passionate talk given on Sunday, October 25 about generosity and what Christ Church Cathedral means to Amanda and her family.

What a joy it is to be a part of Christ Church Cathedral! When I first arrived here in 2001 with Dave, I was skeptical about how I would make Kentucky my home. God was listening to my doubts. Miracle of all miracles, we started attending Christ Church Cathedral and lo and behold, there it was – ART at the Cathedral! What an amazing gift, to worship and be a part of bringing art work to our spiritual space! That meant the world to me. Christ Church Cathedral has been an integral part of my transformation in calling Kentucky home. How grateful I am to be in this community. Let’s reflect together on all that we receive in being a part of this church, all that we receive when we hear the sermons and partici-

pate in Sunday School; all that we receive as we listen to the Choir, enjoy the music and the artwork; all the relationships we’ve built through serving on different ministries together and attending special events together. And don’t even get me started on the amazing clergy and pastoral care! When one of our family members was rushed to the hospital last year, I am pretty sure that Father Joe almost beat the ambulance to the hospital! WOW. How I’ve been enriched, and how I believe that we, as a church community, are strengthened through all that we receive. So as Stewardship Co-chair, I cannot just focus on all that we receive. I want to move us into ways that we can support and give to this church, our spiritual home. A few weeks ago Dean Wade talked about generosity. She said, "Generosity takes practice, and generosity changes everything." Last week Father Brent reminded us that we We make a life by what we give. Happiness can be illusive unless we have a generous spirit. The themes from Dean Wade and Father Brent reminded me of a quote from one of my favorite movies, the 1993 movie called Shadowlands. (It’s the Hollywood version of the love story between C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham.) In the movie, C.S. Lewis says, “I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God. It changes me.” I’d like to challenge you to change that quote with me and make it our theme this year. Let’s substitute pray with GIVE. I give because I can’t help myself. I give because I’m helpless. I give because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. IT DOESN’T CHANGE GOD. IT CHANGES ME! Generosity changes everything. And I believe and I know that GOD WANTS TO DO GREAT WORK IN US! I look forward to our year together - Join me in committing to generosity in a new way!

ART

SELECT VISUAL AND SOUND WORKS BY TRANSYLVANIA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND ALUMNI By Lynne Slone hrist Church Cathedral has been in community with Transylvania University since the early days of the church and we are continuing this relationship with our current art exhibit featuring Tranylvania artists. Jacki Girard, a Professor of Art at Transy, is curating the exhibit which features select visual and sound works by Transylvania students, faculty and alumni. The show features a wide array of contemporary themes and forms by 14 artists, including viewer interactive sound and visual installations, sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs and ceramic work. Make sure to visit the “Giant Moustache Cup” in the Great Hall called “Royal Dandies” by Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova, Professors at Transylvania University. Kurt is in the Art Department and Kremena is in the English Department. Royal Dandies is an interactive piece and invites the viewer to come inside of the moustache cup and experience the art. Kurt and Kremena have garnered national attention recently with their Lexington Tattoo Project which was recognized as one of the nation’s top public artworks and featured on CNN. These Transy Professors have recently launched their project “Love Letter to the World” where participants around the world will get tattoos based on phrases from Kentucky Poet Laureate Frank X. Walker’s “Love Letter to the World” poem.

And there were two wonderful works of art on display in our Sanctuary. The first was titled "A Prayer for our Earth: Pine Mountain," created by Dr. Timothy Polashek, Music Technology Studies Coordinator and Associate Professor of Music at Transy. This art work was a multimedia sound and light installation which was Dr. Polashek's artistic prayer utilizing Pope Francis' "Prayer for Our Earth" and sounds he recorded while on retreat at Pine Mountain. The second was titled "Pine Mountain Forest Portals (Summer and Autumn), by Zoe Strecker, Assistant Professor of Art and Program Director at Transy. This artwork was a projection of 2 videos of photos and images from Pine Mountain in a kaleidoscope of rotating images to promote communal reverence of the Pine Mountain's complex beauty.

Washington National Cathedral, where the Choirs of Men, Girls, and Boys will share their ministry of music in Choral Evensong and Sunday services. PARKING UPDATE In an effort to accommodate the hundreds of enthusiastic guests expected for the Messiah performance, Lessons and Carols and the Christmas Eve services, we are asking all able bodied staff, men of the choir, parents of choristers, and the congregation generally to park in the newly created lots on Upper Street. If you are lucky enough to fall into this category, we request that you park near the rear of the lot so that our guests and those with mobility issues can park closer to Upper Street. Please be careful in using the lots as there are still a few pot holes, raised curbs and irregular surfaces. With your help we should have ample parking in the old surface lot and at the front of the new lots to accommodate our guests and less able congregants. Thanks for your continued support of the choirs at Christ Church Cathedral.
