Paddling pool reopens with hopes for lottery funding for splashpark The paddling pool on the Quomps at Christchurch Quay has reopened with members of the community hoping that future lottery funding will provide a more modern facility on the site. The pool has been a well-used feature of the Quomps since it was built in the 1940s. However, it has become more difficult to maintain over recent years and fears that it would have to be closed have led to members of the community joining together to plan a replacement.

The Council has pledged £100,000 to a new project to install a splashpark and a bid is being made to the Playful Ideas Fund of the National Lottery for the remainder of the £215,000 which will be needed. An initial bid submitted to Playful Ideas resulted in an encouraging response and a further bid including more detailed proposals has been put together and submitted at the end of June. Organisers of the bid have already consulted with local children and other interested parties, and have found that a modern splashpark, with fountains, spouts and cannons of water, would be a popular replacement for the pool. However, they would like to hear further suggestions and expressions of support from members of the public and have set up an email address for responses: quomps@hotmail.co.uk. Adrian Dwyer, organiser of the lottery bid, said: “Working in conjunction with the Council, a new community group is hoping to provide Christchurch with a modern splashpark, one that embraces the concepts originally perceived in the 1940s yet meeting the demands of children and adults in the 21st century. “But, we need to show Playful Ideas that we have the support of the community. Without a lottery grant, there will be no replacement, so we want as many people as possible to email us at quomps@hotmail.co.uk to tell us there is a demand for this facility.” Sally Derham Wilkes, chairman of Christchurch Council’s Community Services Committee, added: “We are wholeheartedly behind this bid and have already agreed to put in £100,000 towards it. It is encouraging that so many local people care enough about a play facility on the Quomps that they are devoting so much of their own time to support it. A number of volunteers have already dedicated many hours cleaning the pool in readiness for its reopening this year, something which countless children will be grateful for.” Please mention The Christchurch Directory when responding to Adverts

Frettens Act for “New-Old” Developers Commercial Property specialists at Frettens Solicitors have been busy working with several of the area’s leading property developers completing a number of high value property transactions. Most recently, Clare Hallett, a Commercial Property Solicitor at Frettens, acted on behalf of Blandford Forum based builders and developers Michael Parker Homes Ltd in a joint venture with another party on the acquisition of a site for redevelopment in White Hayes Road in Burton, near Christchurch. The plot is intended for a residential development of 6 detached homes which will embrace modern living while holding the values of traditional master craftsmen. Michael Parker Homes believe that new build homes can be as beautiful as traditional ones and have extensive expertise in using Dorset's traditional techniques. They build new houses, using traditional materials: reclaimed bricks and tiles, stone, flint, beams and thatch. Michael Parker Homes are specialists in the design and construction of country cottages. Their properties blend perfectly into the local landscape and they pride themselves in allowing buyers to have an input in creating their dream home. Clare Hallett has advised Michael Parker Homes on a series of commercial transactions in the past two years. Michael Parker commented “Claire is a ‘developer’s solicitor’ – she and the team at Frettens know how to draft documents to make the most of every opportunity and we find them to be efficient, proactive and affable, no matter how tight the deadlines or how complex the deal.” Further information can be found on www.frettens.co.uk.

The Red House Museum & Gardens Christchurch and World War 1 is a new exhibition to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day and starts at the museum on 18th October 2008. Herbert Druitt the founder of the museum kept a diary right through the war years and the following extracts from 1915 give a wonderful insight into his views and experiences of life in Christchurch at that time. As we have mentioned before in these articles his handwriting is very difficult to read and below is an example to show what we mean. However although there are sometimes gaps where words cannot be deciphered and sentences do not always flow very well we hope it will not spoil your interest in them. Note: RFA is for the Royal Field Artillary

I’m glad I got the old fellow a letter from the King congratulating him on sons in the war. 27 Jan Letter RCB – wrote to him & sent a dozen eggs & 6 pair of longarmed mittens made by Charlotte, Miss Knight & Baker – for any men in his company who haven’t got them. 2 Feb The Salmon fishers in the Run were arrested by the Military Cyclists Patrol ** tonight at 7pm and forbidden to fish at night. They are stationed at Sandhills. There is fear that messages are being conveyed by traitors to German submarines in the Solent and Christchurch Bay 12 Feb Charlotte and I walked over the Head. Lancashires manoeuvring from Double Dykes to top of Head, where they had dug some trenches. Went & examined them – found a large sea urchin in one, & 3 neolithic flakes in another. 16 Mar Went to Boscombe Hippodrome to see Vesta Tilley – she was as good as ever. Sang a number of songs in army clothes “all the pubs from Marble Arch to ….. Square”. Then an excellent one as a Tommy in khaki. 29 Mar Spent all day getting ready for concert tonight in Town Hall, Charlotte looked after the catering – I saw to tobacco & cigarettes. Morris (?) donated the Hall. The doors opened at 7 & before 7.45 the Hall was crammed. There must have been over 300 present – RE & RFA. Sapper ….. RE played the piano for half an hour & the Lieut. Schultz, Capt Armstrong & others came & the concert went on splendidly till 10 o’clock – extension being granted for last post at 10.30. Some very clever artists. ……….. . £1-13-7 was taken in refreshments – 850 cigarettes & 300 ….. were given & all worked splendidly – a very enjoyable but tiring evening.

21 Apr This afternoon walked over with Mayo to field at Head where my invitation got us into enclosure at Saluting Point. The troops marched past – some 5000 of them – Cheshires, 9th Lancashire Fusiliers, a fine serviceable body of men. Then there was a General Salute. I don’t suppose the field at the Head has ever witnessed such a spectacle since it was a camp 2000 years ago. 6 May 700 RFA came to the Barracks from Cosham. Those already here say they’ve got to sleep 13 in a tent & that one of each man’s blankets have been taken away from them. War Office stupidity I suppose again. 16 June A Wessex Group corporal who served in the R Berkshires in S Africa where he was wounded 7 times told me of his treatment in the present war – wounded – then back to duty – after most harrowing(?) trench work in which nearly all his section were killed – being over 60 days out of 77 in trenches – his nerves broke down - & after a short time he was only given 7 days leave to visit his home – Now he is back in the Wessex Group at Tuckton – a brave man. How infernally silly Kitchener’s methods are. 28 June News came at 11.20 that wounded train would arrive 11.30. A hurried ….. to a few then off to the station. Only two ambulances came instead of 5 because of shortness of notice. Train came 11.40 & we kept it till 12.40. 20 cot cases in stretchers taken in Miss Starkey’s & Mr Noye’s motor ambulances 2 at a time – 20 walking cases in motors lent by Wiggins, ….. ….. & Rev Blackett. The last cot case left station yard at 1.15. Wrote to Director General, Medical Services, Embarkation, Southampton complaining of the utterly inadequate notice given. 14 July 90 RFA went off today from 2 Batteries (?) for the Dardenelles. Poor chaps I hope they’ll come through. The 43, 44 & 45th Batteries RFA are those at the Barracks & Camp. They expect another 400 shortly. 16 Sept Letter from Ralph enclosing a paper showing that Proficiency Pay is not granted except with 2 years service – an obvious swindle on the men who have risked their lives for us – wrote to him enclosing £1 to help with expenses.

18 YOGA By Gill Taylor. SRN.B.Ed[Hons] BWY. EFT Practitioner. One of the great things about Yoga is that it can be practised by anyone at any age with and without ‘challenges’ of any sort – so it really is suitable for everyone. It is one of those things that you can do, feel very relaxed, have a wonderful sense of Well Being AND feel energised too – pretty amazing. Over the Summer you maybe thinking of spending more time outdoors and on the beach or in the Forest. We do live in a fantastic part of the country where we can take marvellous walks and see wonderful scenery. We can also give ourselves time to sunbathe or indeed relax in the shade. When sitting down think about your posture and keep your back straight, shoulders back and relaxed. Allow both feet to be squarely on the floor. This is a simple thing that we do every day. If we keep our backs straight and shoulders back this keeps the spine in its natural shape and allows the chest to expand. This in turn helps the lungs to work to their full capacity so that you can breathe deeply into them using all of the lungs rather than just a little. It gives all of the abdominal organs the correct amount of room that they need to work properly.

If you have your feet squarely on the floor the body is then balanced. Have your hands lying gently on your lap and close your eyes. A very simple relaxation technique can now be used where we can tense and relax different muscle groups. This highlights what it feels like to be tense and relaxed, therefore making it easier in time for you to notice when to let go of tension. Tense the feet, legs and buttocks. Feel the tension – and let go. Feel the difference between the tension and relaxation. Make fists with your hands; pull your shoulders up to your ears. Feel the tension – and let go. Feel the difference between the tension and relaxation. Squeeze the face up tight. Feel the tension – and let it go. Feel the difference between the tension and relaxation. Move your head gently from one side to the other easing out any tension in the neck. Tense the whole of the body – feet, legs, buttocks, fists, shoulders, face. Feel the tension – and let go and totally relax. You can also do this lying down. It is great to do before going to bed, especially if you need to ‘switch off’ from the day. It is great to do while you are sitting in the garden or on the beach.

30 Posture of the Month – The Cat

Breathe IN Breathe OUT Do this in a continual flowing movement several times. Question: What is this good for? Answer: This posture is marvellous for keeping the spine and back muscles supple and flexible. It allows you to really feel and relax the neck, shoulders, upper, middle and lower back. This is great to do after gardening as it stretches out the back beautifully. It is a gentle posture. Congratulations to June Fleming who won the June competition.

Conquer the Marrow mountain Courgettes and Marrows will grow at amazing speed during hot spells, cut them even if you don’t need them, that way they’ll keep cropping for longer. Although courgettes themselves are no good in the deep freeze, Courgette bread is a tasty cake-like treat which can be frozen and well worth the trouble. The recipe can be found here www.stewarts.co.uk/cbread Dead heading - garden therapy Remove flower heads from bedding plants as they fade, this will stop them wasting energy making seeds and also it can be quite relaxing on a warm summers morning - honest! Patio perfection If you come back from a holiday and your patio pots look withered and miserable there is still time to perk them up. Replace feeble plants with Fuchsias, Sunflowers (dwarf) or Geranium all of which will keep flowering well into the Autumn. Ponds Water levels drop rapidly so keep a watch and top up regularly. You may need to remove some plant growth if the pond is getting congested. Leave pond weed on the pond side for 24 hours to allow pond dwellers time to crawl back in. Garden lighting Balmy summer evenings get added atmosphere from the evenings drawing in, so garden lighting really starts to pay off. Use some lights to illuminate pathways but really go for it with carefully placed lights to accent your plants and features. Solar powered lights will be good enough to light your way but use low voltage for accent lighting. Spring Bulbs During August spring bulbs become available - make the effort to plant Daffodils, Tulips, and Hyacinths now to be sure of a great display next year. New Lawns Keep new grass healthy by watering thoroughly - a good soak every week is better than a quick spray. In times of drought raise your mower blades and allow a bit more length than normal. Tomatoes Keep removing side-shoots form cordon varieties and watering regularly. Remove fruits with signs of blossom end rot immediately to allow perfect fruits to develop quicker. Yellowing lower leaves can be removed to allow sun-light onto fruits to accelerate ripening. Patio pots Tired planted containers can be re-planted. Choose plants that will carry on looking good well into the Autumn - grasses are especially good. Keep feeding patio plants to encourage growth and flowering.
