Congratulations to Ginny Tucker of Mudeford who won the October competition.

For details of Santa’s arrival and bookings phone 01425 272244 Santa will be loaded with goodies when he comes calling - an ordinary sock just won't be big enough! However optimistic you may be you are sure to find something big enough to cope. From simple black glasses to fancy ones with decorated stems we have something perfect for your Christmas table. This lovable animated Reindeer is a very expressive character - He may be a Moose in disguise. Singing dogs, a story telling Teddy and an hilarious but irritating turkey bring endless amusement to children and grown-ups alike. The Poinsettia is also known as the Christmas flower. The flowers are actually the tiny greenish yellow parts right in the centre. The 'petals' are really massive bracts. Poinsettias last for ages with basic care. Give them reasonable light but not direct sun. Water when they are getting dry but never soak them. Treat them with care as the 'Petals' are delicate and bleed when damaged. See our display of illuminated and animated village scenes. And don’t forget to enjoy a Cream Tea while you are visiting.

Reindeer will be flying in from Lapland bringing Father Christmas who will parade from Peeks Partystore down Bargates to join the Mayor, Cllr Josephine Spencer, on the balcony of the Mayor’s Parlour in the High Street for the Christmas lights switch-on at 4.30pm. Traders in the High Street, Saxon Square, the Priory Quarter and Bargates will have special offers and events during the day to give plenty of opportunities to shop for those extra items to fill the Christmas stockings. There will be a whole host of events to keep the children amused throughout the day, even if the weather proves to be unkind. Two marquees will be set up in Saxon Square, courtesy of Christchurch Community Partnership, to house a variety of activities, including face-painting, live bands, an art competition and other fun events. After the lights switch-on, the reindeer will pull Father Christmas in his sleigh to the Priory, where he will be available to listen to Christmas wishes. Children will also be able to pet and feed the reindeer who will be in a special pen outside the Priory. Paul Riley, chairman of the Christchurch Christmas Festival Committee, said: “We decided to move the switch-on and the Christmas Market to a Saturday to give more people a chance to spend a relaxed few hours doing some shopping and taking part in the activities set up in the marquees before and after the lights switch-on ceremony. “Having the switch-on ceremony at 4.30 means that people will get a clearer view of Father Christmas and the reindeer coming down Bargates as it will just be getting dark – and it won’t be such a late night for the very young ones.” To advertise in The Christchurch Directory call 0800 043 0850

Maria del Pilar (Pili) is a teacher and entertainer who has been described as the ‘unofficial Spanish ambassador’ in the South of England due to her infectious enthusiasm for Spanish life and customs. Red House Museum & Gardens Memories from our local Scout Movement Emmeline Louise Hein

My full name is Emmeline Louise Hine And the year you were born in? 1925 …and I first saw it advertised in the Christchurch Parish magazine. St George's and All Saints Mudeford both wanted Cub Leaders or Assistant Cub Leaders, and first time I thought oh no, I couldn't do that, I've only helped with Sunday School but I've never had much experience, so I didn’t apply for it. Then my brother had moved to the Jumpers and Miss Rymes needed a Guide Assistant. That would have been 1947, I was in two years there before really I got into the Scouts which was 1949. I had my first Warrant, and one of the Guides was going for a part of her Queens Guide wanted to help with the Cub Pack. Well the Cub Pack Leader was taken ill and had to go to hospital. So of course the Guide wasn't allowed to go there on her own to be in charge of boys. So of course it was my opportunity which I grabbed with both hands, and I never looked back from there really. So we started down at Mudeford. I don’t know how well you remember where the Working Men’s Club is now? Yes, well it used to be wooden construction and the Scouts had a wooden construction next to it. It was all rough ground and our hut had no windows, if you put an electric light bulb in, that would have disappeared by next week………

Inheritance tax and Dorset Home Owners Recently, local and national papers have reported the details of the Phizackerley case and its potentially disastrous effect on the workings of the nil rate band discretionary loan trust. This type of trust is being created by many Dorset homeowners within their Wills to legally mitigate their liability to Inheritance Tax (IHT). Many more people in Dorset are liable to IHT as a result of the sharp increase in property prices in the area over the last few years. Paul Solomons is a Partner at Frettens Solicitors and Head of the Private Client Department. Paul receives many enquiries from clients stating that they have read in the newspaper that this case could make the nil rate band Trust in their Will ineffective and enquiring about whether they should change their Will. Paul comments “It is gratifying that my clients have taken on board the type of Trust that they entered into when we last changed their Wills. I am also pleased to confirm to them that in my original advice I tried to take into account the problem that has arisen in the Phizackerley case, and as such it should require few, if any, of our clients to change their Wills.” The facts of this case are somewhat unusual, but if you believe circumstances of this type could arise within your estate, it is still possible to make a fairly simple adjustment to your Wills to avoid the issue arising. It can never be claimed that the nil rate band loan trust is a simple solution, and their preparation is certainly a case where a professional with specialist knowledge should be employed. Families in Dorset or Hampshire owning property over a value of £285,000 can make arrangements to protect themselves against inheritance tax by contacting Paul Solomons on 01202 499255.

There is a copy of this complete interview at our Scouts Exhibition.

The ‘Stress’ Word and What it Really Means Find out about National Stress Awareness Day on 7th November

S

tress is one of those words that everyone uses but it seems to mean something different every time it is used. People talk about experiences being ‘stressful’ – everything from getting up late to getting divorced. They describe themselves as ‘stressed’ when they often mean busy or being prevented from doing what they want to do. Life is full of challenges and pressures but that is life. We need challenges and pressures to motivate and stimulate us. Interestingly, some people really thrive on pressure and feel low and below par (stressed) if they are not being pushed or pushing themselves. We can however all experience too much pressure and this is what most people regard as stress.

The graph indicates how this works: Not enough pressure: limited coping/stressed Just the right amount of pressure and challenge: coping and enjoying life ∉ Too much pressure: limited coping/stressed/ill WHERE ARE YOU ON THIS CURVE TODAY? The key is to get the right amount of pressure in your life. However, there are some circumstances we have no control over: ∉ death of a loved one ∉ family illness/personal illness ∉ Redundancy And there are other circumstances which we do have some control over but often feel we don’t: ∉ financial issues ∉ legal issues and costs ∉ divorce ∉ moving house ∉ addition to the family ∉ parenting /step parenting ∉ traffic ∉ in laws ∉ parents/family Yours may be different…what are yours? Life is about facing and surmounting your challenges and managing any resultant pressure. Knowing yourself and how you react can be a great help towards managing your pressures. ∉ ∉

To advertise in The Christchurch Directory call 0800 043 0850

Some strategies to help reduce pressures Get to know your thinking style – do you always expect the worst? Do you believe you will find a solution? People who expect the worst usually get it and often pull others down with them. People who look for solutions usually find them and cope with pressure much better ∉ If you feel panicked or anxious focus on your breathing and slow down the rate until you can breathe deeply into your abdomen. This will help to calm you and then you will be able to think more clearly ∉ Develop tolerance and try to understand other people’s reactions – why are they angry/sad/ uncommunicative/irrational? Through understanding you may be able to try a different approach ∉ Put situations into perspective – on a scale of 1 – 10 how important is this problem/issue? If 10 is vitally important and it’s less than 8… is it really worth a friendship/relationship/job etc? ∉ Value your time. Spend your time wisely and in line with what is important to you. This requires you to know what you really care about and be strong enough to make changes to reflect this. You will develop a sense of purpose and inner balance which helps you to deal with pressure better ∉ Exercise your body in a way that you find enjoyable. You are more likely to keep doing it if you enjoy it. You could regularly: ∗ walk the dog ∗ use the stairs instead of the lift ∗ garden ∗ jog/run ∗ go to the gym ∗ swim/row/sail/windsurf/climb/ski/skate ∗ play football/rugby/hockey/tennis/badminton/ volleyball ∗ take part in Tai Chi/ Chi Gong/judo/karate/ pilates/yoga Exercise your mind through: ∗ painting/drawing ∗ writing ∗ playing an instrument/singing ∗ researching ∗ meeting old and new friends ∗ cooking new / reviving old recipes ∗ daydreaming Smile more – “a smile is worth a thousand words” Anon. It produces great body chemicals and makes you feel great. GIVE SOMEONE A SMILE ON NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS DAY AND MAKE THEIR DAY! Welcome to the November edition. Well it’s beginning to feel more like Winter now and even though it’s getting darker earlier, the weather still seems quite mild. I can’t quite believe that this is November… but as you will see, the magazine has a pre-Christmas feel with details about the Christmas light switch-on in Christchurch, Fairs, Christmas gift suggestions, decorations and the pantomime season fast approaching!
