Letter from the Editor Easter weekend saw lots of children taking part in the Chamber of Trade’s Dragon Slayer event.

The young knights had to hunt down symbols from cards placed in the windows of many of the town’s businesses. Once all the symbols had been recorded, the children had to match each one to a letter, which were then rearranged to spell the words, ‘dragon slayer’. The event was won

by Hunter Bownass of Cark. Hunter, very generously, plans to split the £50 Hunter, the Dragon Slayer prize money with brother, Wilbur, and friend, Katie, his fellow knights who helped hunt down the dragon with him. Sid the dragon was spotted in various places before finally being slain. Vicky Johnston, from At Home, said the event was well attended and great fun for all who took part. Well done to all.

Well, the education and courses for adults feature brilliantly put together by Sharon is a fascinating account, varied and presents a wealth of new ideas to try from U3A, to art, Tai Chi, outdoor education and bushcraft to the range of courses offered by Cartmel Community Adult Education Centre. That’s the good news. The bad news is we didn’t have enough space to put it in. Apologies to all who contributed and it will be published in the June edition.

Duck drama

Local man, Tom Ross, who along with other volunteers regularly feeds the ducks at Grange duck pond has told Grange Now that, “as from Sunday 13th April there has been no food for the ducks”.

Historically the duck feed has been provided by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC). Tom said, “the ducks used to be fed on pellets and grain and then in September last year they stopped providing pellets and left only grain in the bins for feeding.” Continental Landscapes have been responsible for feeding the ducks Monday to Friday, and then volunteers, such as Tom, take over at the weekend.

We asked SLDC if they had stopped providing food for the ducks and Deborah Wright, Open Spaces Officer gave the following response, “I can confirm that SLDC have reduced the amount of duck food provided and are monitoring the ducks, we have been doing this since September. The reason for our actions is that, there was once an intensive breeding programme on the pond, with local volunteers, who monitored and fed the ducks.

However, over the years, volunteer numbers have dwindled, to there being no contact with SLDC and no known monitoring or duck breeding programme.

Over this time SLDC had continued to supply the same level of duck food, even though the ducks this was intended for were reducing in number and there was not a regular breeding programme on the pond, this has resulted in an increase in the numbers of Canada Geese and nutrient levels in the pond, which has caused algae blooms. Both of which bring their own problems.

Since the amount of duck food has been reduced, there have been no ill or hungry birds and no suffering, we will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that those ducks which needs additional food do not go without.”

However, Tom informed us that the food supply hasn’t been reduced, “the bins are empty. There is no food at all and as far as I know, the ducks haven’t been fed since Saturday 13th April.” Tom also said of SLDC’s response, “there has been an increase in Geese but they are Barr Headed Geese and I have suggested to SLDC that they liaise with Leighton Moss regarding these geese.”

Ben Smith, Wild Fowlers and former volunteer feeder further added, “I stopped being involved with the ducks just over a year ago. The Wild Fowlers and SLDC had an agreement; we would purchase and rear the ducks, at a cost of £200 per pair and they would provide the food for them.

Unfortunately, ducks were being killed on daily basis by foxes and SLDC said they couldn’t do anything about them so the Wild Fowlers decided to stop being involved as it was costing us too much money. We lost £11,000 so we had to pull out.” Ben further added that, in his opinion, “the birds could go about a fortnight before they would start suffering from lack of food. I would estimate that it costs around £12 - £14 per week to feed the birds.”

As we go to print we have been told that the duck food bins were filled with grain on Friday 18th or Saturday 19th and the ducks have now been fed. We have asked SLDC how they intend to reduce the food, by what amount and for long, but we haven’t had a response as yet. Perhaps the volunteers and SLDC could get together to work this out, for the benefit of the ducks.

New Defibrillator at Cartmel School Cartmel Village Society and Cartmel Priory CofE School have worked together to ensure that the use of a defibrillator, often referred to as an AED (automated external defibrillator), will be available to all the pupils and residents of Cartmel, and also to the visitors who attend the many events held in the village each year.

Headteacher, Dr Paul Williams, said: ‘Thanks to every organisation involved in getting this important equipment up and running; The Mayor of Grange, Grange Community First Responders, North West Ambulance Trust, Cumbria County Council Fire Service and Cartmel Village Society. The defibrillator is located at Cartmel Priory School.

Grange Town Meeting A fascinating evening was enjoyed by local residents at the Grange Town Meeting. The opening speaker, Colin from Bay Search and Rescue gave an interesting talk on the equipment used and training methods of the team. The importance of the team was highlighted by various stories where they have literally saved lives.

Thanks were added to the local volunteers who look after the shop and help to raise vital funds to support the team. It was interesting to hear about the B.S.A.R. Youth Team which sounds like a great opportunity for local youngsters to be involved with the team and get training and fun all in one.

The next speaker was Philip Bailey, son of Mayor Norman Bailey. He described how Norman as a boy had been rescued from the sands of Morecambe. It was therefore of personal importance to him that he had supported Bay search and Rescue as well as St. Mary’s Hospice in his Mayoral role.

Next speaker up was the local Fire Brigade representative who was able to confirm that the austerity measures being imposed on the fire service would have no effect on the 999 service provided in Grange and surrounding areas. The impact of the measures would however be felt in areas such as community

safety services for example advice and home services. To some extent volunteers are being recruited to fill the gap.

Representing the Rotary Club, Frank McCall talked about the activities for fun friendship and charity and referred to the Goat Project, whereby locally made puddings are sold to help promote self sufficiency for African Women. Helen Khan, president of Grange and District Lions described the opportunities available for fundraising, social and fun. In particular they are launching a Friends of Grange Lions group, so people can become involved without commitment to carry on.

U3A Grange group, I was surprised to discover, has 360 members which is almost 10% of the local population.

The aim of U3A we were told is to create environments for learning and education, helping to keep interests alive, with over 35 activities currently on offer. Originating in France, U3A has now grown to have over 1000 groups.

Previous Grange Now Editor Mary Ann Best then gave a talk on the work of the Soroptomists. As you will read elsewhere in this edition The Soroptomists celebrate their 60th anniversary this year and intend to place a stone bearing the town crest at the entrance to the town, near the railway station.

Peter Nightingale proposed a round of applause for Robert Leach to recognise his magnificent effort in developing Prom Art over the last 10 years. With an average footfall of over 2,000 the hugely popular events

Are parking charges set to come to Grange?

Cumbria County Council’s decision to introduce onstreet parking charges, as part of its multi-million pound savings budget, was approved by councillors last month.

It will see the abolition of disc zones and shoppers forced to pay to park in 11 towns and cities, including: Carlisle; Cockermouth; Keswick; Penrith; Maryport; Whitehaven; and Workington.

The move has been met with outrage from shoppers and horror from business leaders, who claim it will spell the end for many small businesses who barely weathered the economic downturn.

The next talk covered the recent survey conducted to gauge public opinion on the community led plan.

142 responses had been received from visitors while an impressive 902 responses had been received from local residents, representing a 36% response. There will be an open meeting on May 14th where the findings will be presented and action plans are to be decided.

Deputy Mayor Patricia Thomas thanked everyone for coming and also thanked the voluntary groups who had set up stands at the meeting. She proposed a well deserved round of applause to Viv, Claire, Lynne, Sally and team, plus all the volunteers who care for the Victoria Hall and the facilities it provides. Well done.

Police investigate Graffiti

Over the Easter break the public toilets in Grange were vandalised with graffiti. Grange Town Council and the Police are aware of this and are working together on this matter. If you have any suspicions, please contact the Constabulary on number 101.

Planning application goes in on Trickett’s Field Immediately prior to the Easter holidays, SLDC posted on their planning portal, a planning application for 68 dwellings on Trickett’s Field, the piece of land just below Kents Bank Road, adjacent to the open playing fields, which permits the beautiful view across the bay that everyone sees as they stroll past the long row of lime trees (which are themselves the subject of a tree preservation order).

The application shows the buildings to have very highpitched roofs, and a number of them will be 3 storeys. There are, however, 14 individual

designs, ranging from 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in multiple occupancy buildings to 4 and 5 bedroom ‘executive’ housing.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, delivered his budget statement on the19th March and announced “The message from this budget is this: You’ve earned it, you’ve saved it. This Government is on your side” As ever there are winners and losers as a result of a budget statement, however, we believe this budget is very much on the side of savers.

the remainder would be taxed at 55% were it to taken as a lump sum, should the proposals be implemented, this tax charge will only be levied at marginal rates.

A major shift was announced for pensions and ISA savings in terms of restrictions.

Other Pension changes, which came into force on the 27th March 2014 - those with pension pots of £10,000 or less can take the funds as a lump sum, previously this limit was £2,000 (maximum of three pension pots); people with pension pots worth less than £30,000 in total will be able to take the funds as a lump sum, previously this limit was £18,000; the maximum drawdown for those taking their pension income via Capped Drawdown has increased by 25%.

Although currently only under consultation, under the Chancellor’s plans, those in defined contribution pension schemes will no longer need to buy an annuity (which provides a guaranteed income for life).

Instead they will be allowed to take as much or as little of their pension pots as they wish.

From the 1st July 2014 this limit rises to £15,000 and what’s more all of the allowance can be used for Cash ISA or Stocks and Shares ISA and savers will be free to move between the two elements; an effective merger of both Cash and Stocks and Shares ISA. With UK growth forecast increased to 2.7% in 2014 (OBR), growth in the UK faster than Germany, Japan and the US, all in all it was a very positive budget and one which is aimed at ‘putting Britain right’, as stated by Chancellor Osborne.

Diamond Project

Soroptimists need your HELP Soroptimist International Grange-overSands is 60 years old. One important way we wish to mark this special year is to erect a piece of limestone engraved with the Town Crest.

The stone will be sited in the Ornis Ring, a prominent position adjacent to the railway station and ornamental gardens. The club is excited about this and members are confident it will enhance a public space, as well as add to the civic pride of the town and make a positive statement to visitors.

We are pleased to have the support of Grange Town Council, SLDC and Grange in Bloom and already businesses and organisations in the town have kindly agreed to sponsor the project.

The cost including the materials, engraving, transporting and erecting the stone is £4000.

Members are busy raising funds as well as applying for grants. Cross Bay Walk for playground

Help us raise funds to buy a new basket swing for Allithwaite playground by joining a sponsored walk across Morecambe Bay. The walk, from Arnside to Kents Bank, is to be held on Sunday, 11th May at 3.30pm.

We lost our wonderful swing back in the February storms when it was crushed by the largest tree in the playground. We have started fundraising in earnest to raise the £2,000 needed to replace it as soon as possible.

The walk is suitable for anyone who feels comfortable walking for 3 - 4 hours. Dogs are also more than welcome if kept under control. The registration fee for all participants is £10 per adult, £5 per child (under 16) and £2 per dog. Children under 16 must be accompanied.

We still have a busy and packed programme leading up to the summer, with lots of varied workshops on offer in May and June, for example, Ikebana flower arranging with Joan Bentley on the 17th May, Silversmithing and Enamelling on May 10th as well as Glass fusing with Marilyn Hale on the same date.

We also have a one day Painting in Watercolours workshop at Bob Henfrey’s home studio (numbers restricted to 4 maximum). Build on your Pilates with Sue Hotchkiss and her Pilates Master class on Saturday 7th June from 10am until 1pm. Following a warm up Sue will take you to the next level in terms of strength, endurance and flexibility. The session will conclude with a deep stretching sequence and guided relaxation, but is only suitable for people who have at least 6 months Pilates experience.

Experienced NCFE Level 4 Bushcraft Instructors Pete Fry and Tony Saunders will put you through your paces on a 4 day and night Primitive Skills Course. Foodbank 8th June

Barrow Foodbank would like to thank everyone who gave to the November food collection. A total food collection of 302.5 kgs with a value of £518.20 was raised. The next collection will take place at Grange Parish Hall on Sunday 8th June, between 1-3pm. More and more people are dependent on support from the foodbank so anything you can spare will be greatly appreciated.

Playground Open Celebration 9th May Lindale is celebrating the completion of its project to completely refurbish the village playground with a special event to thank everyone who contributed.

The Playground Fund, which was set up by parents and grandparents in the village, has been hugely grateful for the support of people in Lindale and beyond. This includes all those who supported our 100 Club, which raised the fantastic sum of £1,330, and who attended our various fundraising events or dropped small change into our collecting boxes. Thank you all for your generous support.

Close up on Cartmel Cartmel is busy all year round with tourists, with over 60,000 visitors to the Priory Church alone, but they are also very pro-active as a community with varied clubs and associations such as: The Traders Association, The Cartmel Art Society, The Cartmel In Bloom Group (winners of many awards in Cumbria In Bloom and Britain In Bloom), The Cartmel Village Trust and the Cartmel Village Society, who are keen for all residents to become members (no fee).

All the sections are very active, and following a donation of £1000 from the Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust, all our youngsters were able to enjoy an evening on the Kendal climbing wall. A joint pack holiday took place in March at Great Tower, and a beaver “sleep over” is planned for May.

Cartmel And District Flower Club On April 14th we had a very colourful and interesting afternoon with Anne Morgan.

Her demonstration entitled “A Grand Day Out” took us to Ascot. Her floral hats, picnic basket and cocktail really gave us a flavour of the races. We even had a rainbow, and she gave us her interpretation of the queue that we can all find ourselves in on these occasions. The bright colours and variety of flowers really set the scene.

Cartmel Quakers ‘Objection Overruled’ - a talk by David Boulton at Cartmel Quaker Meeting House on Sunday 8th June 2014 at 2.30pm.

David Boulton is the author of the book, ‘Objection Overruled’ which has been reprinted this year. It deals with the struggle to get conscientious objection to military service recognised by the Government in the 1914-18 War and the suffering of those whose objection was overruled.

Cartmel Art Society The lovely village of Cartmel is such an inspiring place for artists and not surprisingly the Art Society was founded here 48 years ago. Over the years it has grown into a thriving Society of like minded people who love to paint whether indoors or out.

Currently there are about 70 members who enjoy regular meetings held between September and May. These meetings afford opportunities to develop new skills at workshops and demonstrations run by notable tutors. During the Summer months various venues are arranged for opportunities to meet and paint outdoors.

Cartmel Chef wins the Roux Scholarship 2014

Tom Barnes,25, sous chef at Simon Rogan’s two-Michelin-starred L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, has won the 2014 Roux Scholarship.

He beat five other finalists who all prepared ‘Chartreuse of quail and sweetbreads with grape sauce’ at a cook-off held at Westminster Kingsway, London on Monday 14 April.

Tom receives £5,000, courtesy of the Savoy Educational Trust, to support his development and an invitation to cook and train under the supervision of a leading chef at a prestigious 3-star Michelin restaurant anywhere in the world for up to three months.

Tim’s Column The big news over the past month has, of course, been discovering that the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal is facing a renewed threat from the hospital trust that runs it.

For those of you who have not caught up on this yet, as I have mentioned in Grange Now before, the Trust has been conducting a widespread review of the services it delivers to the people in the Morecambe Bay area. We have not seen the final outcome of this work yet but the people of Barrow and Lancaster have both received reassurances that their hospitals will be safeguarded. The same has not been forthcoming for the people of South Lakeland with regard to WGH. To add to this concern, several consultants claim to have been in meetings with the Trust where they have been told that the plan is to give the Kendal hospital site to some social enterprise organisation.

Effectively signalling that the NHS will not be running our hospital.

Surely they should be expanding the services that are offered in Kendal rather than stopping providing any services at all. We have been fairly successful in bringing new services to the hospital recently, including chemotherapy, kidney and other treatments and I have been pushing hard for the investment

Ageing Feet

Ageing feet naturally develop more problems because the skin tends to thin and lose it’s elasticity. Healing can take longer and wear and tear to the joints over the years may have caused some degree of arthritis.

But painful and uncomfortable feet aren’t a natural part of growing old or something to “put-up with”. A lot can

enough, particularly, if you intend to wear them everyday. If you suffer with swollen feet, it’s a good idea to put your shoes on as soon as you wake up, before your feet have had a chance to swell.

Exercise can help to keep feet healthy – it tones up muscles, helps to strengthen arches and stimulates blood circulation.

Chamber of Trade & Hoteliers Association We have just had our Easter holiday trading, and early news from chamber members has indicated that this was the best Easter trading for many years. A great start to the summer season.

The Dragon Slayer Treasure Hunt took place on Easter Saturday and it was great to see Sid the Dragon and our protective knights roaming around Grange. This was a free event with voluntary contributions on completion of the quest, if any money was raised the Chamber will announce this next month and decide which charity will benefit. in a radiotherapy unit at the site. However, as ever with action in support of the hospital, I can do little without your support. We have delivered petitions in support of the hospital to over 20,000 homes across the area, if one has arrived through your letterbox please do sign it and get anyone you know to sign it (visitors to the area also count, if someone was to fall ill whilst they were on holiday here where would you want them to be treated?) and return it to my office. I also took advantage of the last Prime Minister’s Questions before Easter to ask the Prime Minister to support the campaign and he agreed to work with me to look at the issues.

Please, please do everything that you can to support our hospital. If it goes it won’t come back of that we can be certain.

• It would leave people in places like Ambleside, Bowness, Sedbergh, etc. a worryingly long distance from hospital treatment • For you in Grange it would effectively mean no alternative other than Barrow for most of your treatments, whether it be having a baby, chemotherapy or an angiogram

Cartmel Old Grammar care home

We are sad to report that Cartmel Old Grammar care home will close in early May. Residents and staff were given notice, of one month, via letter. It is a real shame that we are to lose this care home as the the relatives of residents have told us, “We have been very happy with the level of care. The staff in there have always been very caring. The granddaughter of one of the residents also added, “this kind of upheaval when you are in your 90’s and have dementia, is very demeaning and unsettling”.

Grange Now received several calls about this from worried relatives and are sorry to be the bearer of this news.

County Matters Everyone should have received their polling cards for the European Elections on the 22nd of May. Many people have been asking me if there are any local elections as well in Grange. There are elections in some wards of South Lakeland this year but not in Grange.

At the Annual Town Meeting in the Victoria Hall many local volunteer organisations were present showing our Town has a very good record of volunteering to support our community.

The County Lib Lab Cabinet running the authority now have gone out to Local Committee areas in the County asking them to nominate towns and streets to impose street car parking charges on.

With this in mind a local group has just volunteered to manage the recreation area on the Promenade on behalf of the Town Council. I would like to congratulate Judith Shapland for organising this and with her husband Ron running this scheme. This shows how committed the people of Grange are into maintaining our facilities here in the Town.

In South Lakeland the first town to receive this dubious honour looks likely to be Ambleside. I will be opposing any imposition of charges from Carlisle to any of our towns in South Lakeland unlike my Lib Dem colleagues who voted for this in the February Budget.

Deputy Mayor’s Report This month I was lucky enough to be invited By the Mayor of Barrow on a Civic tour of the town. Accompanied by Councillor Greenway we began the day with a photocall on the balcony of Barrow Town Hall.

Then, onto a coach with a number of other Cumbrian Mayors and their escorts (one wonders what the collective term is for a group of Mayors – a chain, maybe?) Alighting at BAE Systems the sheer size of the buildings was aweinspiring even before we were led inside to see the works in progress. Moving on to the Lifeboat Station at Roa Island I was very glad there were no plans to launch the state of the art boat as it was somewhat blustery and the waves looked somewhat choppy!

After a delicious lunch at the Bosun’s Locker where we took the opportunity to talk with other Mayors and Councillors, we proceeded for a brief tour of the Dock Museum before arriving at the Kimberley Clark complex, where Kleenex and Andrex among other things are manufactured.

All in all the day was both interesting and exhausting.

I was surprised at just how far we had walked but the most useful part of the day

was meeting up with other Mayors and Councillors and having an opportunity to swap stories, worries and ideas.

On a smaller but equally entertaining and interesting scale, I took up the generous invitation to attend the Allithwaite and Cartmel W I Spring Fair.

There I not only met up with a number of members, some of whom I knew in other guises, but also managed to win some very nice items on the Tombola.

And of course I couldn’t go home before buying two pots of delicious looking jam!

This month the Council held the Annual Town Meeting. A selection of local groups and charities took tables where they displayed information about their groups and members were available to talk to the public about activities etc. Each group was invited to give a three minute presentation about their activities. The keynote

speaker this year was Bay Search and Rescue. Their illustrated twenty minute presentation was both interesting and informative and very well received. At the conclusion of the talk Philip Bailey, son of the late Norman Bailey, Mayor of Grange, presented a cheque for £400 on behalf of his father and told us how Norman had been rescued as a child from the sands of Morecambe Bay. Bay Search and Rescue was one of the Mayor’s charities and despite being unwell he worked hard to raise £1000 to donate to these groups.

The next Councilor surgery will be on Friday May 30th at 3pm at the Victoria hall, when Councilors Thomas and Thorne will be available. Please do come and have a chat with us about local issues close to your heart.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Greetings from everyone at The Old Vicarage, I hope this Newsletter finds you in good health and enjoying the wonderful Spring weather.

January Whilst winter raged outside, we stayed warm at The Old Vicarage having as much fun as possible.

We baked lots of cakes from lemon sponges to a range of tarts including lemon curd, apricot and traditional strawberry, and of course our favourite - fairy cakes.

Our music continued with our choir ladies and with a visit from the entertainer Brian Turner who came on the 22nd and who impressed us with his singing.

The residents stretched their bodies with armchair exercises with Margaret Chapman and tried “chairobics” for the first time with Andrew as well as our weekly Tai chi.

We ended the month with a visit from our favourite musical theatre – Folksy theatre, who are always good for a laugh.

To help take part in outings to Holker Hall, Grange parks and local hotels - ability to enjoy afternoon tea and eat ice cream and cakes essential !

February In preparation for Valentine’s Day the residents and Andrew went all out making mobiles which they hung in the conservatory and Valentines Day cards. They also made Valentine’s Day cupcakes and decorated them.

Along with the cupcakes, there was savoury baking with crunchy cheese straws, cherry flapjacks and marmalade tarts.

The residents started making rag wreaths, a project that will be ongoing over the next few months.

They also had a pamper session to sooth their finger and toenails.

The residents practiced using the traditional sewing machine we acquired, showing Andrew their skills.

We planted over a several days a number of pots with iris and gladioli bulbs, in preparation for Spring.

Andrew and Brenda started the month with creating a new music group for residents.

In the middle of the month the Predator Experience came to visit, bringing with them a range of animals, including an owl, polecat and hedgehog. We invited some children from St. Mary’s School to join us.

March We started March with a visit on the 1st March from a gorgeous St. Bernard called Whoopi-Doo brought

by Holly Rose. All the residents loved meeting her.

That afternoon Andy took several of our residents to see the matinee performance of Blitz at Victoria Hall in Grange.

The baking continued with the making of mini apple pies, including creating pastry from scratch - Sybil was very good at it. The residents also made chocolate sandwich cakes and lemon cup cakes.

There was lots of arts & crafts going on, the residents worked on the ragwreaths, they started making decorations for St. George’s day, and also made Easter decoration including polystyrene eggs and rabbit & chick lanterns for the conservatory.

In the middle of the month Judith Pool, brought 4 students to play a range of music using recorders, keyboards, flute and the violin. They wowed our residents with their skills.

The residents planted lily, hyacinth and poppy bulbs in pots and placed the ones they made last month in the garden to grow.

The residents filled The Old Vicarage with flowers arranged for Mothering Sunday and sat down to a special Mother’s day meal.

Nick Burton will be talking about “Walking Wainwright’s Way” in the Library on Thursday 1st May. Nick Burton has undertaken a 10-day, 126 mile walk following the route of Alfred Wainwright’s life from Blackburn to where his ashes were scattered on Haystacks.

Society Round-up Amnesty International Sadly the Cartmel and Grange Group has had to disband after 37 years of work for peace and justice and the victims of oppression. Members of this friendly group have raised thousands of pounds, held dozens of events and sent thousands of appeals and messages. Now age, illness, family commitments, the rise of the computer and changing life styles have taken their toll on the number of active members.

However, Amnesty’s vital work for peace and justice across the world carries on locally as ex-group members send their own appeals, greetings cards and support campaigns via the Amnesty website and Magazine.

And there are dozens of other local members doing the same.

In March, members enjoyed a full day workshop when Pam Potter showed us some effective painting techniques in mixed media using the theme “ Coastal Scene”. In April, our general painting session was “Still Life” and “Flowers”, and Janette Phillips was on hand to help those members who wished to finish their creative Diaries.

Chamber of Trade

The Chamber operates as a non profitable organisation and its main aim is to raise funds for local charities, members of the Chamber are local businesses, and as a collective we also keep up to date on local developments.

The chamber has just had its latest AGM and we are pleased

to report that our members are growing yearly.

The financial report was strong and we were able to donate money to Grange Primary School and Bay Search & Rescue.

The AGM concluded that it will continue to subsidise the hanging baskets for members as this helps to improve our chances with Britain in Bloom. It was also discussed that we should hold a summer event, which would complement the Christmas Extravaganza, more news will follow but we are leaning towards a vintage fair at present, anyone that may be interested please contact the chamber. We are also planning an Easter event which will involve the intrepid explorer in you, the “Dragon Slayer” Treasure Hunt, will hopefully take place over the Easter weekend along with an Easter Egg hunt in the park; details of this will be sent to all local schools. Any business or sole trader is very welcome to join the chamber and we would love for you to contact us, our motto is strongly becoming “The more the Merrier”.

Coffee Club

The speaker in April was our own Alison Gawith, whose long interest in Ethiopia led to her visiting the country recently.

With beautiful illustrations she told us about the country and its history. The Ethiopian church dates back to at least the 4th century. Once a very thriving nation it has suffered a series of wars leaving it deeply scarred.

Ethiopia is largely an agricultural nation relying mainly on coffee production but here too it suffers because of fierce competition from South American growers.

Two thirds of the people are Christian mainly members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) who tend to persecute non Orthodox Christians.

Militant Islamists are seeking to win not just Ethiopia, but all Africa, to the cause of Islam.

Further persecution comes from members of the Communist party who took over the country in 1974 for several years. During these recent years of persecution the non Orthodox Christian church has grown tenfold. Alison Introduced us to several church members whose amazing stories bore testimony to their active faith in a risen Lord Jesus.

GADAG

A: Low Fell Gate Caravan Park – the proprietors have submitted an updated application for an additional 15 permanent holiday caravans on this site, utilising (and eliminating) a green field site that previously has been available to touring caravans and campers in tents. The Town Council and GADAG have jointly opposed this application – it involves much hard-standing (for 30 cars) and the hard-surfacing of large areas of the caravan park, all of which is likely to contribute to peripheral flooding Additionally, there is (within this planning detail) an application to convert a toilet block into a holiday cottage. In our view, these factors are incompatible – conversion of any building on this site brings with it overtones of future applications that ‘clone’ the first. (More holiday cottages.)

B: Lyndene, Holme Lane, Allithwaite – here, a resurrected application (SL/2014/0351) is now proposing a different access (further along Allithwaite Road) for 4 houses facing Jack Lane – any housing here is a mere precursor to the coalescence of Allithwaite and Grange. You read it here first – is this the future you want for Allithwaite – an adjunct of Grange?

C: Berry Bank – Land between Allithwaite Road and Carter Road. (SL/2013/0691). As those of you who have supported and followed GTC’s & GADAG’s determined stance will know, SLDC’s planning committee finally granted Russell Armer their desired planning permission for 42 houses on this site.

Nevertheless, Russell Armer had to battle for 15 months to achieve this, with many re-designs along the way. There may be a number of matters yet to be resolved in this regard.

D: Royal British Legion, Kents Bank Road. SLDC’s Planning Committee blithely granted this application for a ‘convenience store’ in the teeth of the strongest possible opposition from GTC and many local residents, whose peace and quiet will be seriously affected.

We begin to doubt whether the Planning Committee will ever don their independent thinking caps.

Additionally, although this store will doubtless wish to operate for 7 days, the restaurant adjacent is unable to obtain planning permission to open on Sundays, as this vicinity is deemed to be a ‘residential area’. Double standards rule – not OK. E: Land South of Thornfield Road – SL/2014/0406.

This is an application for 68 houses on a hitherto protected greenfield site. Protected no longer. The view of the bay that you currently see from Kents Bank Road (approximately opposite Methven Road) will disappear beneath a swathe of houses built by developers from Fleetwood, who have nothing in their eyes but £ signs. Rise up, I implore you!

GADAG is a voluntary organisation, dependent upon the funding and goodwill of the local community. We try to address nearly every serious matter that encompasses the district – the whole of the Cartmel Peninsula is under a serious threat of suffocation under Government planning proposals (in excess of 700 houses.) The Planning Inspectorate has been effectively neutered (as evidenced last year), and SLDC have a very powerful weapon in their hands – their LDF/LAP (call it what you will) was found to be ‘sound’.

Grange and District Art Society

After an excellent season of activities including demonstrations in all medias, visits and social gatherings, the society is postponing the regular Thursday meetings until September 5th when we open with a demonstration of portrait painting by Bob Wearing. An interesting and busy programme is planned for the new season and visitors are always welcome to the meetings which are held at Allithwaite Community Hall from 2pm - 4pm. Come early to get a seat.

Meanwhile there are several summer outings with the opportunity to paint or sketch outdoors on the 2nd and 30th of May (weather permitting) and a visit to Rydal Mount on May 16th to enjoy the gardens. Grange Fell Golf Club

Welcome to my first report of 2014. After a recent dry spell, the course is looking in good condition for the time of year. It has dried out after a wet winter, and we are now waiting for some spring growth.

Our new captain, Graham Shepherd, had his drive-in on Sunday 16th March when his team took on Presidents Ken’s team, which resulted in a win for the President, the following weekend 3 members had a birthday bash competition for their big birthdays Derek A, Gerald B and Alan J. 60 members and guests had a enjoyable day, which resulted in a win for Jim Jennings and Ken Bramley, with 45pts.

We started our main club competitions on Sunday 13th April when we played the Silver Anniversary Trophy which was won by Daryl Lomas with a 67 net, over the Easter period we played the Easter Medal which was won by Gerald Benson with a 70-6-64 net which included a

hole in one on the 9th second was Mike Hudson with 66 net third was Daryl Lomas with a 67 net.

Grange Fell Golf Club (Ladies)

Our season started with Lady Captain’s Drive In. Our Lady Captain, Margaret Bebington, did the honours, and the competition winner was Ronnie Hall, Lady Vice Captain,with 18 points and the runners up were Ruth Waring and Jill Atkinson with 16 points (over 9 holes). The latter pair lost their Daily Mail foursomes round, away to Ulverston.

The team competition between Lady Vice Captain’s team and Lady Handicap Secretary’s team was an honourable draw.

Medal 1 was won by Margaret Bebington and runner up was Ronnie Hall. The par competition was won by Carol Campbell and runner up on a card countback was Ruth Waring.

Now that our season is underway, we look forward to some good weather, and of course, good golf.

Grange Lecture Society

The steam-powered yacht Gondola, which provides popular cruises on Coniston Water, was the subject of an illustrated talk on 18th February by engineer Dennis Whittaker.

Since 2004 Dennis has been one of the team operating Gondola following a career in shipbuilding.

He was therefore well qualified to give members an authoritative account of the history, and remarkable survival, of this vessel commissioned in 1858 by James Ramsden, the Managing Director of the Furness Railway, who saw its potential as a tourist attraction at the terminus of the Coniston Railway then under construction.

The final lecture of the season was given by retired Geography lecturer Paul Hindle. In an illustrated presentation entitled ‘Bolivia – from salt flats to silver mines’, Paul recounted his journey from the Bolivian Plateau to the Amazon basin, taking in such remarkable features as the world’s largest salt flat, the pre-Inca archaeological site of Tiwanaku and the silver-mines at Potosi, as well as the country’s two capitals and Lake Titicaca.

At the short AGM preceding this lecture Sue Wilkinson was elected President of the Society for the year 2014/15. The new season opens in October.

Grange Lions

Several members of Grange Lions joined Furness Lions and friends for a meal at the Lisdoonie Hotel, Barrow in Furness, and as usual a good time was enjoyed by all.

On Easter Saturday a collection in aid of “Jigsaw” [Eden House Children’s Hospice] was very well supported at Booth’s supermarket Ulverston. The total collected will be published at a later date, when all monies have been counted.

Grange Lion’s have supported this wonderful place near Carlisle for several years and once again The Cumbria Grand Hotel are also allowing us to run a weekly

I’m sure we have some young person in our community who is quietly getting on with these activities and deserves recognition.

Grange Men`s Forum

Donald Shepherd was elected president at Forum`s annual meeting which wound up their first season since the move to Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank.

Mr Shepherd is the club`s longserving outings secretary and continues in that role. There are a few places on the waiting list for the musical Barnum, starring Brian Conley, at the Palace Theatre, Manchester, on Wednesday, November 5th.

Forum`s lunch at Kendal College on Thursday, May 22nd, also has limited places left. Guests have the choice of two pre-lunch activities - Kendal musician Edward Lawton`s talk, The Oboe and I, at the college at 11am, or a Civic Trust guided walk round Old Kendal, meet at the Parish Church at 10am. Enquiries about the theatre trips and lunch to Mr Shepherd (Grange 33475).

The summer outing to County Durham on Thursday, June 26th takes in the National Railway Museum outstation at Shildon, Auckland Castle at Bishop Auckland and Durham Dales Centre near Stanhope. Enquiries to Alan Anderson (Grange 33696). The annual walk is to Staveley on Tuesday, May 13th. Andrew Lowe, a retired National Park officer, will conduct the party around the Lakeland village`s buildings of historical and architectural interest. Meet at Wilf`s Cafe in Staveley at 10.30am. Grange over sands golf club

At last, or at least at the time of writing this report, the weather had taken a turn for the better, sunny days, blue skies and a good golf course to play on.

The fixtures are now going ahead as planned and we hope this continues for the rest of the year.

Our Pro’s shop is getting nicely stocked up with some good equipment and some nice items of clothing to select from, so pop in and browse the selection.

Apart from golf we have a social calendar, the next event will be a Curry Evening followed by a short quiz on Friday, 2nd May at 7.15 p.m. It is £12.50 a head which is payable on booking and is open to visitors as well as members. You can book a place by dropping in and paying over the bar for a place.

The Golf Opens are filling up nicely if anyone is interested, just go on line to our website www. grangegolfclub.co.uk where you can book tee times for the Opens and also for casual golf.

Grange over Sands Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union meeting held on 2nd April, was a busy occasion with much laughter.

Mrs Kath Wise, who is the MU Head of the “Gowns for Love” project gave an informative and humorous talk on the sewing and knitting projects carried out by Mothers’ Union members for the Premature Baby Unit at Furness General Hospital and Hospitals within the Diocese. She showed us examples of the gowns, woollen garments, shawls, and tiny crosses in pockets, which are left in the Chapel for those in need. She handed out patterns, wool and needles, and members were very keen to start knitting and sewing. Balaclavas, mufflers, fingerless mittens, scarves and woollen hats are also knitted for Seafarer’s around the World, by Mothers’ Union members.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 7th May at St Paul’s Meeting Room at 2 pm when Mrs Helen Cameron will be giving a “fireside chat” presentation entitled “Trekking in Nepal”and visitors and new members are always welcome. To find out more call Gail Swanson, 015395 32284.

Grange Over Sands NSPCC

Supporters of the NSPCC continue to raise money to help ensure that cruelty to children is stopped. An example of this is the total of £106, raised

by Cameron Finn when he ran the Coniston circuit, in April. We are always grateful for these donations, whether they be large or small amounts of money, and new ideas to do this are always welcome.

During the morning of Friday, June 16th, we will be holding our Summer Coffee Morning in Grange over Sands Parish Hall and look forward to seeing everyone, when you can socialise with friends, and also pick up a bargain from our gift and cake stalls. We have fond memories of all the events held here over the past 25 years but sadly, due to the fact that the Parish Hall is to be sold, we shall no longer meet here after this occasion.

However, we will continue to support the NSPCC by holding all our events at other venues, to which you will all be more than welcome.

Grange Soroptimists

A Fairtrade coffee morning, with Soroptimists and Grange school working together, was very successful. Participation from local businesses included At Home providing Fairtrade coffee and biscuits and Fletchers stocking Fairtrade bananas.

More participation from local businesses would be welcomed as Grange needs to maintain Fairtrade status.

The Staying Safe project in local secondary schools, which is a joint venture between Grange Soroptimists and Young Cumbria, is being adapted for use with Year 6 children in primary schools.

On 8th March, Grange members joined members of SI Barrow and Windermere to mark International Women’s Day with an event in Barrow Market Hall. Other groups involved included the Barrow Women’s centre, Girl Guides and the Multicultural forum. Members talked to the public regarding International Women’s Day, Soroptimism and our projects including Staying Safe. We hope the project will be extended to Barrow Secondary schools after interest shown by local teachers and John Woodcock MP. We are pleased to announce that we now have a permanent venue – the Meeting Room at the back of St Paul’s Church on Crown Hill. Grange members met there recently to hear a very moving talk about the Springfield Women’s Refuge. On Thursday 22 May (7.30pm) our speaker will be Jackie Huck who is the WI Federation’s Poet. Her talk is called, ‘The Memory Box’ and it promises to be a humorous and entertaining evening. New members are very welcome.

St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group

I have just to been to a 3 course lunch at The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway Station at Haverthwaite which Karen Maher (owner) put on for the hospice through Leven Valley Support Group. It was very well attended and everyone put a donation in for their lunch which was excellent!

The food and drink was donated by local suppliers and Karen and her team cooked up and served a fantastic menu which raised the magnificent amount of £708.50!

We had a very interesting talk

by Ken McDuff about the music that had been important to him, at different times in his life. He was a D.J. when in the RAF in Gibraltar, and he was with the United Nations in Sri Lanka.

National Townswomen’s Guild celebrated their 85th Anniversary with a service at Manchester Cathedral which some of us were able to attend along with Ulverston and Barrow Townswomen’s Guilds.

We had a happy luncheon club outing to the Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge.

In May, we welcome Mr Geoffrey Baguley to talk to us about, ‘President Lincoln’. This will be very interesting in view of the recent film. This is an Open Meeting with everyone welcome to join us at St. Charles Church Meeting Room at 2pm, on Thursday May 8th. Followed by tea and biscuits. Visitors £2. Local History Society

Newton and Field Broughton W.I.

There was a lot of business to be dealt with on April 9th. Enid Bushby paid a moving tribute to the late Barbara Brown who had been a very loyal member of the W.I. since she and her husband moved into the area several years ago.

The speaker for the evening was Annie from the Heavy Horse Centre in the Whicham Valley. He gave a most interesting talk on her life with heavy horses, first on the Isle of Skye, then at Armadale Castle until she and the family moved to their present home in 2006. She illustrated the talk with slides of the places they’d been to and of the Clydesdales, Shires, Suffolk Punches and Ardennes horses they have at the centre.

They also work closely with George Hastwell special school giving work experience to the pupils. Her enthusiasm for her work and her love of all the heavy horses was infectious.

The May meeting will be on the 14th. Resolutions will be discussed and Helen will give a talk on her adventures in Nepal.

It will take place at Lindale Village Hall at 7.30pm.

Witherslack W.I.

Ann Walshaw chaired the

April meeting, at which Joan Bentley gave an inspiring demonstration of flower arranging. The finished pieces were raffled off to six lucky winners. Joan keeps up a jolly patter while she works, along with amusing anecdotes.

Before that, in the business meeting, last minute plans for the Fashion Show were made.

Lin Bowman reported on the half-yearly Council Meeting.

Requests were made for help, and also articles for display, at the “Step Back in Time” exhibition on the May Day weekend. Tickets for Holker Garden Festival were ordered. A thousand bottles will be needed in the W.I. tent. Please bring some to the May meeting.

On 14th April, Grange Probus club held a Ladies Invitation Meeting at which the speaker was Tim Farron MP. His talk was called ‘The Day of an MP’. He began by describing the difficulties he experienced in finding his way around Westminster when he was first elected. On one occasion he and a friend almost ended up in the House of Lords. He emphasised that the main work of an MP was in carrying out tasks which benefited his constituents. He

Church News St. Charles, Grange It was good to learn from last month’s Grange Now that St Charles was rumoured to be contemplating a bid for St Paul’s Parish Hall. It was the first I’d heard of it!. No! - We will not be seeking to purchase the hall. Also, despite gossip, St Cuthbert’s has not been sold!

It is good to walk on the refurbished pavements – a pity there isn’t the money to widen them. One must be patient.

David and Marjorie Simon received a royal send off with Evensong and an excellent buffet at the Cartmel Priory. Everyone wishes them well in their new surroundings. They will be greatly missed around the Priory.

I write this rather hurriedly in the midst of Holy Week preparations for Easter. A request from the Indian Community to celebrate the Stations of the Cross in the language of South India on Good Friday is a first for Grange. We are becoming quite international as we will be blessing food for a Polish contingent on Holy Saturday.

The parish has responded very well to the Holy Week Masses. A good preparation for Easter. “The Light is on for YOU” experience, offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation and an opportunity for quiet prayer and reflection was well supported.

The ladies have again risen to the challenge of Church cleaning.

Teams have been seen in Church throughout Holy Week – dusting, sweeping, washing etc. A man was actually seen on Monday sweeping away cobwebs.

I will be off to Sheffield during Easter week. My annual charismatic retreat for Bishops, Priests and Deacons. Many things to do – must close.

United Reform

After a gap of a couple of months, here is an update from the United Reformed Church in Grange.

Our last report was about the Induction Service for Revd Martyn Coe to our South Lakes group of churches. After all the excitement of this event we are settling down again to our usual activities. The new routine with Martyn in residence is proving to work well and we are enjoying some new ideas and Martyn is learning how Grange URC “ticks”.

We held a very successful fundraiser for the Vine Trust. About 60 people

Throughout Lent our Mid- week services have had the theme ‘A Journey to Easter’ through our senses. They have proved most interesting. During Holy Week we have been very pleased to share worship at the Methodist Church, both on Maundy Thursday evening,

It was wonderful to have the Bishop of Penrith with us for Holy Week.

Bishop Robert led three mid-week services entitled Songs of Love and Forgiveness which explored the events leading up to the death of Jesus using well-known hymns and songs and included prayer and reflection.

The Bishop also led the Maundy Thursday Eucharist of the Last Supper at the Priory and the moving Liturgy of the Cross on Good Friday afternoon at St Paul’s.

The flower arrangements and Easter decorations in St Paul’s are stunning and visitors are welcome to come in and look at our floral displays and Easter crosses produced by both our Flower team and the members of our congregation. St Paul’s is open daily and the taking of photographs is permitted.

He had been the President of the Conference of Sierra Leone for a number of years during the civil war there, before coming to England and taking up his ministry here. The Church was filled to overflowing earlier in the month for a Thanksgiving Service to honour the life of Barbara Brown who had been a tireless worker in the life of our church. She is greatly missed.

We are looking forward to our Church Anniversary on 18th May when the preacher will be our own Minister, Rev. Joe Daley, who will be leaving us later in the year. This service, like all our Sunday services, will be at 11am.

Cinema night at the Keg & Kitchen

For the joy and beauty of springtime, the new exhibition at The Beach Hut Gallery is ‘Spring’ showing willow work by Susan Pettman.

Susan, a local basketmaker, is showing baskets, plant supports and other useable items woven from willow. She has a close relationship with her materials, growing them all, chemical free, in an osier bed she created with her husband Ian, in Allithwaite. Her work is a response to the natural beauty and textile-like qualities of willow, aiming is to create traditional and modern designs derived from ancient English, Irish and French techniques.

Accompanying Susan’s willow weavings are drawings and linocuts by Beverley White.

Beverley’s images are drawn from a combination of sketches and memory or direct studies of natural forms.

The drawings are then worked until something pleasing emerges to be transferred to a block, either wood for engraving, or lino for cutting. The wood engraver’s tools give great scope for detail and texture in the task of turning a black area into something interesting. At the Beach Hut Gallery, Kents Bank Station, from

In the Set Poetry Class, Kayla Porter came 3rd, with her recital of the poem, ‘Huff’, by Wendy Cope.

All students that entered the competition, achieved high marks and should be congratulated on holding their nerve on the day, in front of adjudicator, Marie Dixon.

Following the event, drama group leader, Adele Hewitt, received the exciting news that Evan Allan has been selected to receive the Julie Wills Trophy and £50 prize money. He was selected from all the contestants, in the under Year 6 Classes, for Voice and Speech.

Grange Concert Club May Concert

The first concert of the 2014 season organised by the Grange-over-Sands and District Concert Club will be on Friday 9 May at 8pm at the Victoria Hall.

Senior pupils from Chetham’s School of Music will make a welcome return to play several instruments in a varied, always popular programme.

Masquerade Drama Group

Following a highly successful showcase evening at Cartmel Village Hall on Friday 4th April, some members of the drama group performed their pieces in the Coronation Hall, Ulverston on Monday 7th. Eleven students performed under the Voice and Speech classes and nine in the Acted Dramatisation Class as part of the Ulverston Music Festival.

Grace Heap reaches semifinal of Teen Star

Local teenager, Grace Heap, 18, has managed to sing her way to the semi-final of a national singing competition. Grace, of Grange-over-Sands, who many of you will know from her wonderful performances with Grange Opera over the years, has made it through two gruelling heats, after impressing TeenStar judges.

Just one more round now stands

between her and the grand final, at the O2 Arena in London. Former Cartmel Priory pupil, Grace, said, “It’s quite overwhelming, I wasn’t really expecting to get through this round, but I’m very excited about the next bit, and hope I can do well in that too.”

Why not learn about art - in the evening!

Painting for Pleasure meetings run once a month, on the first Friday of the month, from 7.15 pm to 9.15 pm, at St Paul’s Parish Hall. These classes have been well received by people who work through the day and have not, until now, been able to find a local art related evening group, to join in with. The meetings cost £4 per session. Although the meetings are organised by Grange Art Society, you do not have to be a member of the society to attend. One recent visitor to the classes said, “Thank you so much for organising the monthly evening art classes.

As I work all week, something art related in the evening is very important to me, as it helps to unwind and de-stress after the week. I would love for the classes to continue. Many thanks again, Marianne.”

The next meeting is May 2nd (this Friday) 7.15 pm at Grange Parish Hall, Kents Bank Road.

Guest artist, Peter Threlfall, is coming to give a workshop on Acrylic Painting. Materials will be provided.

Rev. David Simon - On Sunday 30th March, 200 parishioners from the various churches in the area, serviced by the Team Vicar gathered in Cartmel Priory to say farewell to Rev. David Simon, a popular Team Vicar for 12 years or more.

David and his wife Marjorie, who herself played an active role in the Church and the local amateur dramatic group, are moving to Todmorden to be near family. Rev. Simon is taking up a position with the Church in Halifax.

As active members of the local community they will be sorely missed, as was obvious from the large turnout to bid them a fond farewell.

I do believe the council are going to stop feeding the ducks and geese.

They won’t last long on no food. I have fed and looked after the ducks for 28 years.

They will be sadly missed by both young and old and visitors. Please don’t abandon them. Surely you can still afford to feed them. They have given lots of pleasure to Grange.

The lady handed it over to staff without any hesitation, and for this I am most grateful. I felt a real April fool when I noticed it missing, as it contained a tidy sum. Dear Editor, I have not got out this week to look at the notice on the trees along Kents Bank Road (between Thornfield Road and Yewtree Road) but can see from the plans on SLDC’s website that there is an intention to completely ruin this line of pollarded lime trees by felling some to improve access to Trickett’s Field.

Is there not a tree preservation order on this row of unique limes? They are such a significant landmark feature and an amenity that frames the view of Morecambe Bay from the road and guides travellers into Grange from the West.

Decimating them will be an act of vandalism and make the barrack-blocks, which developers intend to build in Trickett’s Field, even more intrusive.

(I have rarely seen such poor and vulgar designs which merely pay lipservice to local vernacular and completely overlook issues of infrastructure and density.)

The problem, of course, is that local opinion is ignored by the planners and builders who simply want to serve political masters or make money.

They don’t live here nor do they have the economic nor aesthetic intelligence to recognise what it is that gives Grange its sense of place, makes it different and brings tourists Their greed and philistinism will destroy the visual and environmental qualities that make these open spaces and trees attractive to residents and to the very visitors upon whom Grange’s livelihood depends?

Build appropriate and necessary houses by all means but not in inappropriate places.

We should be safeguarding not desecrating this landscape.

I write concerning the pay and display car park on Windermere road, Grange over Sands.

On a recent visit from London I disembarked the car, and deposited a £2 coin in the machine pictured, only for it to be forcefully returned, rolling out of the machine and down into the adjacent grid.

The inconvenience caused was not only financial - I had to call at a local shop, purchase something that I didn’t need, in order to be able to make the required payment.

This was a very stressful start to my visit to GOS, I was highly concerned that I would receive a parking fine in this window of time, as my car did not have a ticket. Fortunately - this was not to be my destiny.

I don’t imagine that I’m the first person that this has happened to, and would urge your readers to proceed with vigilance when using this particular machine.

School Reports

Grange CE Primary We have been very busy at Grange CE Primary School upgrading our computer suite with 20 new base stations, all hosting up to date software, we have invested in a classroom set of iPads to be timetabled weekly for each class, plus an iPad per classroom for teacher/student use. We have also renovated our office space and entrance area over the Easter holidays.

On World Book Day recently the pupils and staff celebrated by dressing up as their favourite book characters, all had a really fun day and in the afternoon the Year 2 class walked to Grange Fire Station (dressed in character!) where they were shown around the Fire Station and had great fun looking at the appliances and asking lots of questions, this linked with their termly topic ‘The Great Fire of London’.

The school are very grateful to the Fire Station for giving their time to allow the visit.

We celebrated Science Week, starting with a great assembly where Mr and Mrs Rowley came in to show the children how pedal power can create electricity. All KS2 children had a chance to try out the bikes and competed to light up the highest watt bulb. This was followed by a whole school day of science activities

based on sustainable power. All parents and carers were welcomed to come in to school and help the children who were organised into mixed age groups including nursery pupils, staff, parents/carers and volunteers all helping to run exciting sessions based on sustainable energy.

Our thanks to Mr Hamer (parent) for his fantastic input at the start of the day. We took part in the Dance Platform at Ulverston Victoria High School where the children gave a perfect performance thanks to all their hard work and to Lucy Everett of Dance Atikk for coaching the children. Look out for us at the Edwardian Festival where the children with be Clogging with the tuition of Alex Fisher who has been running workshops throughout school. Harp lessons are also happening in school for children in years 3 to 6,

in just three sessions the children have managed to master a tune!

The Year 6 class visited London for the day on 7th April. They travelled by train and visited the Houses of Parliament to tie in with their curriculum work as well as The National Gallery rounding off their exciting day with a trip on the London Eye! The school have been working hard on their entry for the Woollen Woods Canopy Arts Project which opens at Sizergh Castle on Saturday 12th April. The children crocheted triangles and squares for the kite using 100% wool from local Herdwick and Swaledale sheep and felted wool to make butterflies and flowers. We are looking forward to seeing the children’s work in situ at Sizergh Castle.

Students Rise to Maths and Technology Challenges Two teams of Cartmel Priory CofE students attended this year’s Rotary BAE Systems Technology Tournament at the Hydro Hotel, Bowness, on 13 March 2014.

8 Students from the Year 10 Design Technology group were set a technological challenge in the morning and then produced their designs and a working device to remove the ‘meteorite’ (in reality a tennis ball hidden awkwardly in an enclosed box!), ready for testing in the afternoon. This annual event is planned and organised by local Rotary Clubs – it is also a national event involving thousands of students across the country. This year’s event attracted over 80 students – and following an exciting testing and marking of the students’ work, Cartmel students were awarded 2nd place in their 14 to 16 years

category – with Mr Russell and Mr Wilson again finding themselves on the winning staff team!

Members of the successful team: Harry, Emily, Tilly and Chris. Robert, Nathan, Seamus and Ed also took part successfully completing the challenge they had been set.

18 students entered the Intermediate Maths Challenge in February this year.

10 students gained certificates in maths problem solving paper which is set by Leeds University. Congratulations to students achieving the following awards:Bronze: Jemima, Joe, Tilly, Thomas, James, Owen & John. Silver: Tomas & Saskia. Gold: Susanne.
