As we went to press two days before the Vulcan XH558 was due to fly over Windermere, I can only hope that lots of people managed to get a good look. On the aeronautical theme the fabulous plans for Waterbird are still very much going ahead.

This month's front cover features a fabulous image of Norman Buckley (kindly lent to us by Low Wood Hotel) in Miss Windermere III on the 23rd July 1957, travelling at 113.57 mph. You can read more about his story on page 6-7.

The wagon is due Tuesday 17th November to take the shoeboxes directly to Romania, in time for our volunteers arriving in early December who will give them out in the south eastern area, around Constanta.

Lots of suggestions this month about shopping and dining ideas for Christmas. On the Christmas theme a couple of dates for the diary are the switching on of Christmas lights taking place on 21st November in Ambleside and 28th November in Windermere.

Hawkshead Christmas Fair takes place 5th and 6th December.

Even sooner we have Halloween and then bonfire night celebrations. There are various events taking place in the area more details on page 5

On Wednesday September 23rd, members of the Soroptimist International club of Windermere and District spent a hectic morning, receiving, sorting and packing all the generous donations of bedding, indoor and outdoor clothing, toiletries and food that were brought to the Marchesi Centre in Windermere.

Numerous boxes and black sacks were then speedily loaded onto the Intenational Aid Trust van which carried the many contributions on the first leg of the journey as emergency aid for Syrian refugees. Our thanks go to everyone who responded to our appeal, as well as making donations towards the transport costs.

The Windermere Club collects clothing for the Poppy Project in London which helps women who have been trafficked into the UK. Knitted blankets and children’s clothes have gone to hospitals in Afghanistan. Food and toiletries are collected for local refuges and we will shortly be filling Christmas shoeboxes for adults in Eastern Europe. Summer garden parties raised funds for ‘Partners in Education Swaziland’ and for providing fees for a girl in secondary school there.

A mountain rescue on Blea Rigg, a 1776ft-high fell above Great Langdale might not seem like the toughest of tasks for the Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue team – but it was certainly one of the more unusual, as the log on the incident reveals.

The summer has seen some fantastic work being done by working groups which include volunteer members of the public.

In September, a National Trust volunteer working week was based at Millerground.

The Rangers and volunteers spent their time working to protect many of the woodland pathways which have been improved making them safer and easier to walk along. GoLakes have funded the improvements.

BOOK REVIEW

When someone tells you they are reading a history of a local village you may have in your mind’s eye an image of a couple of hours with a small paperback delving into vaguely remembered happenings in the past.

Let me warn you; in order to read John Campbell’s new history of Bowness (on Windermere) you need to gird your loins and do a few exercises before starting. The hardback book certainly slips easily into the category of ‘tome’ running out at 540 pages of high quality printing on high quality paper.

But don’t let that put you off. In the event about 300 pages are the actual narrative with the rest being taken up with tables, glossaries, charts, family histories, references and a host of other supplementary information that adds to the experience.

The book is beautifully written. I had intended to just skim through to get a feel for each section, but ended up reading-on when I should have been skipping.

John has started at the best place - the beginning - in about 440 AD, before which no evidence could be unearthed about the settlement on the lakeside. He finishes before the end, in 1963, although a few references to recent developments are hinted at.

In between he postulates on the reasons why a settlement would be established in what we now know as Bowness Bay. His research also calls into doubt some of the accepted theories about the Romans and some of the early residents in this area.

When I say his research, I don’t mean a few months spent in local libraries. John has spent much of his life in Africa and the Middle East, although having been born and bred in Bowness and being based here his whole life. His research has been undertaken over 32 years with informationgathering being concentrated to his home visits and other periods in the UK. The collating of all the facts was done whilst far away from his beloved Bowness.

So what does John tell us that we don’t already know? That depends on how much you already think you know.

To start with.... Why does everyone think High Street is a Roman Road? Where did it go? Why would the Roman commander of the fort at Waterhead live on an island 4 miles away? Much previously accepted wisdom doesn’t always stand up to rigorous inspection.

I warmed to the author’s questioning of previously held assumptions.

Moving on to the period from 600 AD to the end of the first millennium John lays out the history, so far as it is known but concludes “So this chapter ends as it began, with many implied question. No answers”This is a good stance for a historian to work from. If you cannot show something to be right, leave it hanging. Too often people want to make decisions without enough evidence.

As he moves into the second millennium documentary evidence

becomes more prolific and by late 14th century John can find evidence of the existence of a settlement.

In the 16th century he can point to many places and family names that we can recognise. Events that we have heard of, as well as some perhaps we haven’t, begin to weave the symbiotic relationship of the village and the lake.

By the 18th century we are shown the controlling families and the building of places that we can go to look at today. There is even mention of Bowness becoming a fashionable place to live. Some of the grand houses being advertised for sale nationally.

John has created some intriguing maps of the locality which show place names and even specific field names, which can ring a bell.

In the latter part of the book, leading up to the Second World War, the relationship between the village, the lake, the people and recreation becomes stronger.

I found it a remarkable read. It looks menacing when you first set eyes on it, but is written with a light touch. It draws together so many different aspects of the immediate locality. Facts that are possibly covered in a narrower way in other more restricted accounts, but the author’s claim that it is the first full history of the village, with so many different strands drawn together, is perfectly reasonable.

I found it a joy to read.

Stirring up a Hornet's Nest Bookshop owner Steve Baskerville-Muscutt is refusing to sell copies of the sequel to the late Stieg Larsson’s best-selling 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' series, saying its publication is “morally wrong”.

Steve, 64, who has owned Ambleside bookshop Fred Holdsworth for the past 15 years, is taking the side of Larsson’s long-time girlfriend Eva Gabrielsson, who, because Larsson died without making a will, received no money after his death even though she had been his companion for 32 years.

A 48-year-old solicitor from Manchester has broken the one-hour world water speed record in his motorboat, Miss Windermere III. Norman Buckley drove the boat at an average speed of over 79mph during his hour on the course on Lake Windermere.

But he said he was disappointed not to have reached 80mph. The wash from a passing launch threatened to jeopardise the whole operation.

Among those in the audience was fellow speedboat enthusiast and close personal friend, Donald Campbell, who makes his own attempt on the water-speed record on Coniston Water later that month.

He said the incident involving the launch had “cost Britain a record of 80mph”.

Norman Hughes Buckley was quite a man.

He was born in Manchester in 1908. From an impoverished background, (his father sold matches on a street corner to pay for Grammar school education) Norman went on to hold a total of 11 world water speed records, set on Windermere, from 1950 until 1972.

He became a successful solicitor based in Manchester and eventually moved to the Lake District where he established an hotel chain still in existence today as English Lakes Hotels Resorts and Venues. He was a keen and very talented motorsport competitor, beginning with motorcycles racing on Southport beach and graduating to cars most notably his beloved Fraser Nash.

During his life he owned an amazing array of cars 41/2 Litre Bentley, Jaguar XK120, Jaguar XK150s, Jaguar E type (fitted with C type ex Jaguar race engine), AC Cobra, Lotus Elan, Mini Cooper S, Jensen FF, Ferrari Dino, Ferrari Daytona to name just a few.

Norman began Hydroplane racing in the early 1950's on Lake Windermere and was a close personal friend of Donald Campbell.

He said: "Donald wanted to put the record so high that it would be unassailable by any foreign competitor. I think conditions were as perfect as I have seen them on Coniston, but Donald was going into the unknown and he was well aware of the risks."

Norman's own first World Water speed record was for the 1 hour unlimited record in 1950 in Miss Windermere II with an average speed of 55.55 mph. The hydroplane was built to his own design and powered by a Jaguar engine.

Using boats he had designed and had built Norman went on to break a further five records including the

flying kilometre at 120.63mph during the 1960's in Miss Windermere IV. This boat was built by Borwick’s in Bowness. She had a mahogany hull and was fitted with a variety of Jaguar engines during her life. Finally in 1973 a Jaguar Type D engine was put back into the speedboat.

His last boat Miss Windermere V was powered by a 6.5L ex Maserati racing engine developing some 580 bhp. Sadly, although Norman was committed to using Jaguar motors, no suitable engine was available with the extra power required at this time.

Miss Windermere IV remains part of the collection of the Steamboat Museum ( now under reconstruction and re-named Windermere Jetties) at Lake Windermere.

Norman Hughes Buckley was awarded the MBE in 1972 in recognition of his record breaking services but died prematurely in 1974.

His connection with the area.

In 1946, Norman bought Crag Wood, a house on the east shore of Windermere about half way between Bowness-on-Windermere and Waterhead at the north end of the lake as a retreat in the lakes.

As he had become very involved in motorboating and record breaking attempts on the lake he had two courses surveyed and landmarks erected. Both courses saw successful attempts on both national and world records. All the attempts were held under the burgee of Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club.

In 1952 Norman had taken a lease on the Low Wood Hotel on the Eastern shore of Windermere. The hotel had a long history, having been a leasehold property for over a century. In 1958 the owner of the property decided to sell and Norman with his brother Kenneth bought the freehold at auction, having become convinced that it was a good business opportunity.

World record week

Norman Buckley was instrumental in the Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club organising the first Record Week which was held on Windermere in 1970 with support from BP (British Petroleum) under the title 'BP National Powerboat Record Attempts'. Competitors could register and turn up to make their own attempts on World Water Speed Records using the official timing equipment laid on for the week.

Flying Fifteen World Championships

The Record Attempts Committee moved quickly to put things into place to run Record Week at Coniston for 2005.

The week was an overwhelming success. Thisr was mirrored by the success of the week off the water.

With Coniston being a small village, the majority of the competitors and officials were resident in the village for the week. This meant and end of season boost for local hotels, rented properties, shops and perhaps, most of all, pubs! It was impossible to go out in Coniston in Records Week and not bump into someone connected with Record Week.

Eight pupils from Windermere School, sailing in Optimists, Toppers and Fevas, competed with sailors from the North and Midlands at the RYA North Zone Championships at Ullswater Yacht Club in September.

This event continued until 2004 which turned out to be the last Record Week on Windermere, for the time being. The National Park Authority had "won" the fight to introduce a 10 M.P.H. speed limit on Windermere, that came into force on 1st April 2005.

This was followed in 1959 by the purchase of the Wild Boar at Crook and later, in 1965 by the Royal Hotel in Bowness. These became the foundation of the English Lakes Hotel, Resort and Leisure Group which is flourishing today under the control of Norman’s nephews, Simon and Tim Berry.

Fiona is shining Jewel

Fiona Sparrow, the vice-chairman of Lakes Parish Council, proudly shows off her new ‘jewel’ – a chain which signifies she is in charge of meetings when fellow councillor and council chairman, Louise Waterhouse has to send her apologies.

Until recently, only the chairman had a chain of office, which meant when Cllr.

Sparrow had to step in to chair parish council meetings there had to be a physical exchange, too.

Our reporter asked her if the ‘jewel’ was better than the chairman’s chain of office.

She smiled and replied: “It’s newer!”

Reaching for the stars Long-serving Lakes Parish councillor Phillip Thompson, who represents the Ambleside ward, has been nominated for the National Association of Local Councils’ Star Awards, 2015.

He has been shortlisted with seven others for the Councillor of the Year Award. Lakes Parish Council clerk Michael Johnson is one of 15 nominees for Clerk of the Year.

Local housing for Kirkstone quarries site?

A presentation made to Lakes Parish Council about ideas for the redevelopment of the former Kirkstone Quarries site at Skelwith Bridge prompted a lively discussion about housing needs in Langdale.

Councillors at the September meeting of the council heard from Julian Handy, of Lancaster-based architects Mason Gillibrand, that an “unnamed philanthropist” was interested in redeveloping the site, which is behind Chesters by the River. He said ideas for the site, which is designated as industrial usage, included artisan and office units as well as holiday lets.

“It won’t stack up financially without some holiday lets there,” he said.

Councillor Brian Hewitt (Ambleside) summed up the mood of councillors to this idea. “The Langdale valley is over-occupied with holiday lets,” he said.

“What we need is local housing for local people.”

Mr Handy replied: “I could go back to my client and talk to him about affordable housing.”

Langdale says: What about us?

They asked to hear what Langdale thought about things, and they got an answer, with both barrels!

‘They’ were South Lakes District Council members, who met at Chapel Stile Village Hall last month and, before the formal meeting got underway, allocated 30 minutes to listen to Langdale.

The person who (metaphorically) pulled the trigger was Jean Birkett, in her capacity as a Lakes parish councillor for the Langdale ward as well as chairman of the Langdale Valley Association. A third hat she wore was lifelong Langdale resident – she was born at Millbeck Farm near the Dungeon Ghyll New Hotel and has lived in the valley all her life.

This is what she told councillors:

ON THE LANGDALE VALLEY ASSOCIATION: It was formed in 2008 after she returned home from holiday to find a new, ‘plastic bubble’ bus shelter had been installed.

Aghast, she mobilised local opposition; the result, “we now have proper bus shelters at Dungeon Ghyll, Elterwater and Chapel Stile.”

ON CAMPAIGNS: The association has kept open local toilets, and has successfully ensured Stickle Tarn has been given community status – “we got very annoyed at plans to sell it; it belongs to Langdale, it belongs to the nation.”

Since I was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats earlier this summer a lot of people have been coming up to me asking when I was planning to move to London.

Can I just make it clear that there are absolutely no plans for me to spend any more time in London than I do currently.

When Rosie, my wife, and I discussed my standing for the leadership one of the major considerations was how much it might take me away from home.

I have four children, three of whom are happily in schools in Milnthorpe and I have absolutely no plans to disrupt any of this and I want to be able to spend as much time with them as any other father.

In fact, as I find out more about my new role and how it will work, it is becoming clear that you may see more of me not less.

Affordable housing is one of the issues that is raised most often at my surgeries and when I knock on doors, particularly around Windermere, Ambleside and the central Lakes area.

The problems people have with living in expensive and cramped privately rented accommodation where they have no long term security and so may be forced to move out, taking their children to other schools, finding new ways to travel to work or even

Council leader Peter Thornton, who himself represents a rural ward (Longsleddale), told Mrs Birkett: “We hear you. Some of things you want us to do are very easy, some are very difficult.”

RELISHING THEIR VICTORY Amid the dozens of jars of relishes and chutneys and preserves and jellies and salsas and mustards and all many of tasty offerings designed to get taste buds zinging, the latest award-winning offering from the Hawkshead Relish Company took pride of place, just like it had taken first place in the Great Taste 2015 Awards. years since they went out on a limb at the height of the foot and mouth crisis in 2001.

Back then the couple were running a moderately successful café in Hawkshead called Whigs which, like many Cumbrian businesses, was hit hard by the downturn in tourists visiting the Lake District caused by a ban on fell walking.

Premier Inn update

Future Ambleside, the pressure group that led the successful fight against plans by Premier Inn to open a hotel on the town’s Kirkstone Road, wants to see a public meeting once the nationwide hotel chain submits a new application to build on a site off Borrans Road.

Fiona Smith, a member of the group and a local B&B owner, says she would expect Lakes Parish Council to organise a public meeting when Premier Inn’s official application goes into the Lake District National Park Authority. It is likely that the application to build an 88-bed hotel on land opposite Ambleside Rugby Club, together with 40 homes, will be submitted before the end of the year.

“I think it’s up to the parish council to set up a public meeting once the application goes in, but if they don’t then Future Ambleside will organise one,” she said.

The news was welcomed by Ambleside residents Chris Moakes and Alan Bishop, whose homes in Loughrigg Meadow and Loughrigg Park are right beside the site.

“We were already making a few relishes for the café and when business practically dried up that summer we decided to try to sell them,” said Maria. “It just snowballed from there. Three years after that we sold the café.”

Chris said: “I’m all for a public meeting so that the views of those interested can be aired.”

Alan, too, welcomed Future Ambleside’s proposal. “I think it’s a good idea. I think a lot of people will want to attend such a meeting, to hear all the pros and cons about such a development.”

FOOD IN THE FELLS! Years spent watching her mum in the kitchen is starting to pay off for Katie Smith who, with her partner Mark Wakeman, is just about to open a new food shop in Ambleside.

Katie, 32, was a young teenager when she moved with her parents to Ambleside after they took over the former Stock Ghyll Café and turned it into Daisy’s Café, the name it still has today.

“My parents (Daisy and Roger) had it for nine or ten years, and I guess that’s where I fell in love with food,” said Katie, who lives in Ambleside with Mark, 46. “I’m all self-taught.”

In November last year Katie and Mark launched their food business, and in the past year have made a name for themselves at fairs, fetes and shows across Cumbria. Their Facebook page (Food in the Fells) is littered with messages of thanks that usually end with an apology: “Sorry for selling out so early!”

The site of the shop is next to the carpet shop on Rothay Road, and Katie is confident that it will be busy, despite it being slightly out of the town centre.

Several years ago the awardwinning Holbeck Ghyll Hotel, with views over Windermere, featured on ‘The Trip’ starring comedy duo Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan. Now, it has its own TV star - Darren Comish - a locally sourced chef who made the finals last year on BBC’s ‘Masterchef: The Professionals’.

Christmas comes but once a year, and for most of us it’s crammed into a few frantic days in December. But not for Leanne Coulson. For her, Christmas is a 365-day annual marathon.

“I try to get away from it in June,” said the manager of Hayes Garden World in Ambleside, “but even when I’m away on holiday I can’t stop thinking about it.”

As soon as one festive season is over she’s busy working on the next. And because Hayes is really starting to make a name for itself with its annual Christmas ‘makeover’ there is pressure to make the next one even better.

Mum-of-three Leanne, a former Windermere town councillor, has been store manager at Hayes for six years, and this is her third year in charge of the yuletide operations.

“Last year was our best ever

Christmas, and this year we’ve decided to take it even further.”

That’s literally, as well, with the usual indoor area due to be given up to Christmas, plus a lot of the outdoors under the main canopy at the rear of the store where Leanne and her team plan to create a German theme.

“We’ll be having a German street, complete with bratwurst and authentic German produce,” said

Leanne. “Now, if I can only get an oom pah pah band...”

There will also be a Santa’s grotto with a difference, with Father Christmas handing out gifts from inside a giant igloo.

Which leads to another part of Leanne’s huge planning task – finding a suitable Santa.

“We’re going to need two, because it’s a big job,” she said. “I’ve already roped in my stepfather (Ivor Mason, who lives in Bowness), but we’ll need another one.”

Recruiting for elves has been going well, too, with Ambleside teenager Harry Wilson lined up to be one of Santa’s helpers, plus an actress who lives in Greece.

“Her parents live in Kendal and she’s back for Christmas,” said Leanne. “I did a phone interview and she got the job!” è The German market opens on Saturday 7 November, followed on Saturday 14 November by the Christmas grotto.

converting the wheelchair, enabling three people to push at once, as well as the pharmacy and hairdressers allowing sponsorship forms in their premises. Other donations came from far and wide, globally from Australia, USA and Switzerland.

Will was unable to complete the triathlon he had planned (including 1k swim and a road trip on his Boma bike from Thirlmere to Newcastle), but hopes to complete it next April. The final total will exceed £12,500 a fine high five flying trips!

Creating cringle tingle Plans are afoot to create a village pre-Christmas event entitled: “Grasmere Welcomes Christmas” this coming November; the weekend of 28/9th to be precise.

Many of the local businesses have met to co-ordinate a series of activities over two days that will entertain and start the Christmas magic whilst enjoying extended shopping hours (Saturday most shops will be open until 8pm) Treasure Trails for adults and children alike, with a prize for all participating children; Grasmere Players will be walking the streets dressed in this year’s pantomime costumes from Cinderella; Grotto will adorn public spaces, mulled and other treats will abound. Dependent entirely on the weather conditions, the autumn colours first seen in October may continue into November.

The leaves on the trees may still be red, orange or yellow, or if the temperature is colder they may have started to fall.

Despite the falling temperature it is a time of great activity in the garden. Piles of leaves may be seen throughout the garden, ready to be transported down to large bays where they remain for three years to make our own leaf mould, before being taken back up to the garden to be used to enrich the soil, ready for future plants.

Herbaceous plants are cut back and beds tidied ready for the winter. This is the time to see various fungi in the grass. The ornamental grasses glistens in the sun, while red berries shine on the cotoneasters. Views of the fells from the upper gardens can be spectacular.

On clear days it is worth taking a walk around the tarn at the bottom of the garden which can be reached either from the bottom car park or by walking down to the fountain on the lower terrace and then following the white markers across the field.

Although Holehird gardens are open throughout the year, there will be no volunteers in Reception from the end of October until the early

months of 2016. Should the gates to the walled garden be closed, visitors are asked to enter and then shut them so that rabbits are prevented from coming in as well.

On most days there will be a few gardeners around, with most coming on a Wednesday. Any donations can be put into the box by the large notice board in the car-park or the box next to the main building.

Rewilding plan will hurt lakes farming TV naturalist and presenter Chris Packham has called for sheep across Britain to be replaced with lynx.

Speaking at the Royal Geographical Society, he said excessive livestock turns Britain’s uplands into “green deserts” and would like to see lynx, beaver, boar and other wild species in their place. He proposes ‘rewilding’ in areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia and Dartmoor.

The last wild wolves in Britain died out in the 18th century and, in doing so, joined the other large carnivore that was wiped out in this country in about 700 AD - the lynx. This left only the fox to predate on rabbits and nothing large enough to tackle deer.

Lynx shun human contact and are harmless to man, and confine their hunting almost exclusively to woodland and forests. It is claimed that where sheep graze on open pasture they are rarely attacked by lynx. In countries such as Switzerland, where the lynx has been carefully

reintroduced and monitored, the impact on livestock has been negligible.

However, John Geldard, who has farmed for many years in the Lyth Valley and has just recently retired from Chairmanship of the National Sheep Association, said that he “Cannot understand how supposedly intelligent people can get the issue so wrong.”

He pointed out that in the case of measures to protect badgers, which were required in order to prevent the cruelty that was being inflicted, they went too far and TB, which was all but eradicated in the 60s and 70s, is back with a vengeance.

“This idea to introduce wild animals back into a changed rural landscape will only upset the balance of nature that has been managed over hundreds of years of agriculture in this, and other areas.”

Don't be scared of the dark at Blackwell

The ‘museums at night’ initiative allows us inside some of the UK’s most historic places when the lights would usually be off and the doors locked. All across the country selected museums and galleries are opening after hours to offer a different perspective on their buildings and exhibits.

On 30th October, Blackwell Arts and Crafts House in Bowness will be joining in and hosting a “Ballie Scott birthday sleepover”. Scott was Blackwell’s architect and this October marks the 150th year of his birth. Naturally, Blackwell are pulling out all the stops, transforming the house into a fairytale dreamland. Over the course of the evening birthday cake decoration, craft making and storytelling will all be offered.

'Happy Days Out in the Lake District' Local writer, Bonnie Quantz, has recently released a new children’s picture book.

Happy Days Out in the Lake District, featuring well known local attractions, is aimed at preschool children and has been illustrated by Piers Harper.

Bonnie said: “Happy Days Out is aimed at local parents who want to read about the area with their children and

at tourists looking for a souvenir of the time they spent here.”

The images in the book were drawn by Piers Harper, an artist based in Grange-over-Sands, who has worked as an illustrator and writer of children's books since 1990. His most successful work, Snow Bear, sold 2.5 million copies.

Chronicling social patterns and traditions; the new Post Office, account book and letters about commissions by the joiner as well as signature architecture, there is something to interest everyone; with interactive activities for children of all ages.

was started a humble waller, but rose to employ 12 wallers and labourers based from How Top Farm. Amongst many buildings accredited to him are the Daffodil Hotel, The Hollens (then called the Lowther) and more domestic houses such as Island View and Tanner Croft. Part of the local business infrastructure and through Vestry Minutes his expert opinion was valued. He passed away in 1885 and buried in the Churchyard.

Fundraising and roof raising stuff!

Canton RFC Male Voice Choir from Cardiff, made up largely of former rugby union players, visited the Lake District for their summer tour and gave much appreciated opportunities to hear a real Welsh male voice choir sing at charity fundraising concerts at two local venues.

Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary Club hosted a very well attended event in St Mary’s Church, at which Ambleside’s Laura Dixon, a student at The Lakes School, gave a delightful solo performance, raising a magnificent £1,250 for MacMillan Cancer Support.

The audience at St Martin’s Church in Bowness enjoyed a similar evening with Kitty Roblin, wife of one of the choir members, as a soloist, raising £650 for Christian Aid and the church roof fund. Not only did the choir give their services without charge, but included in the fundraising totals for both events were generous donations presented by their chairman from their corporate sponsored earnings.

Wives and friends of the choir members, mingling incognito amongst the audience, surprised all at the end with rousing wordperfect Welsh renditions of ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’, the Welsh National Anthem, sung from all quarters.

Could you help the Brathay Trust?

Nearly 7,000 were helped last year by the Brathay Trust, which is looking for more volunteers to help make a difference for children and young people.

The charitable trust, founded in 1946, currently has over 200 volunteers who chip in anything from two days a week to half a day a year.

The trust, based at Brathay Hall in 360 acres at the head of Windermere, has a number of roles which might suit someone with some spare time who empathises with the work of the organisation. These include marathon marshalling, on and off-site fundraising, decorating and gardening, office-based roles, administration support, ebay sales,

event organisers and collection box volunteers.

“We would love to find someone who is happy to organise smaller scale events locally, such as table sales and street collections,” said volunteer co-ordinator Sarah Thompson.

For the past three years my wife and I, who are in our mid eighties, have participated in the “Healthy Hearts” exercise sessions at the Carver Church organised by Cumbria CC Adult Education Department and it is amazing how much fitter we are because of it.

The highly experienced trainer Libby Dixon arranges exercises totally appropriate to those attending and she pushes us, gently, a little more each week yet we never suffer any after effects and it’s a lot of fun.

White Moss Hub – Heaven or Hell?

‘Creeping Development’ and urbanisation of A lovely tranquil family-friendly woodland walk is at the root of the disputed appealed proposition from Lowther Estates about ‘extending’ the toilet block to make cafe and info hub on White Moss Common between Grasmere and Rydal.

The present building fits in, unassuming, part of the background not intruding upon the character of the area. Even in winter, you hardly notice it from the A591. The proposed extension would put an indelible mark on the landscape that no one could remove, making a 24/7; 365 days a year impression on all that pass.

Professor Jeremy Rowan-Robinson (author of books such as ‘The Lake District - a sort of national property’ and appointed member of the Lake District National Park Authority by the Secretary of State in 2007) “knows his planning legislation through and through “ according Councillor Vivienne Rees also a member of the LDN Planning Board.

If it completely changes the character of the area will it strip the joys of self entertainment and development of those discovering flowers, small fish and skimming stones, change a quiet nook of countryside into a mini theme park where cycles and other entertainment may be offered (at a price)?

From 1st October 2015 Canon Reverent Cameron Butland takes up his new post as Bishop’s Chaplain to Carlisle’s Bishop James Necombe, leaving the parish of St Oswald’s (not for the first time) in the very capable hands of Sonia Rickman.

One being asked what Inter Regnum meant to her she promptly replied: “A lot more work!” Holding the senior position of Rector’s churchwarden, Sonia looks after the fabric of the church as well as training and coordinating with brand new people’s churchwarden, Jonathan Smith.

Sonia organises locum clergy for Harvest and beyond. Phone lines have been switched over to her and she will organise all services needed, including funerals and christenings, by finding clergy, as and when required.

Recovering from a heart attack this year, Sonia has support from the community for tasks such as opening and closing the church.

When advised by a former Rector of Grasmere, during a chance meeting at Penrith

hospital, ‘to go back and resign’; she knew she had a responsibility to the community to keep things going, being in an unique position; weathering two previous inter regnums and having 17 years continuous service. “Everyone comes to me for decisions. It can be very hard, you need to be broad shouldered” she said.

Father Dorgan says thank you for help with his garden The parish priest, Father Kevan Dorgan, asked for help with his garden as it was overgrown and needed some TLC and generally tidying up. So parishioner Simone Backhouse managed to rally round some help and the following businesses have given time or donated things to make his garden look better than it did.

Simone and Father Dorgan would like to say thank you in particular to the following: 1. Windermere Round Table did the clearing out and sweeping up of overgrown plants and bushes and cleaned out the gutters on the roof of the church.

Breastfeeding groups receive support

Walking with the wounded

The future of Kendal and Windermere’s Breastfeeding Support Groups has been secured for the next six months thanks to a fantastic £5,000 cash boost from the OneFamily Foundation.

The groups’ organiser Ann Bruce, applied for a Community Award from the foundation to secure the funding that would enable the two groups to continue to meet. The group sessions are designed to give local mothers a place where they can get together, share experiences and get help and support on breastfeeding, which can sometimes be difficult for new mums.

Six wounded ex-service personel - two Royal Marines, two British Army soldiers and two United States Army soldiers, passed through Windermere on a Tuesday morning in September on their 1000-mile Walk of Britain from Balvenie Castle near Elgin to Buckingham Palace.

The party was treated to coffee and scones at Windermere's War Memorial, where they were welcomed by the mayor, Leith Hallatsch,

town clerk, councillors, members of the Royal British Legion and by the Windermere Rotary Club, who did a fine bucket collection, whilst escorting the walkers to the Counties Meet stone at Broad Leys.

Having previously walked to the North and South Poles and attempted to climb Everest, the Walk of Britain is Walking with the wounded's latest endevour to raise awareness of our wounded servicemen and women.

The funding will be used to pay for a registered Breastfeeding Counsellor to facilitate the groups, as well as paying for the space where the sessions are held. It will also be used to produce information booklets for mothers to take away with them as a source of extra support.

The new requirements were not, and could not, have been predicted, hence the most unfortunate delay.

However, it's better to be safe than sorry. The inspection on 7 September marked decision-time.

If all had been well and the Light Aircraft Association inspector had signed-off the aircraft, the programme culminating in the flights scheduled for 17th September would have gone ahead. However, it was not to be and so a new flying programme is being planned for the spring of 2016.

Ambleside School

A new teacher, Robert Bond, who has started at Ambleside Primary School this term, has a background in outdoor leadership and qualifications in activities such as mountain leadership and canoeing.

Meanwhile, during the summer holidays a room at the school has been refurbished and is now the ‘Eco Room’. Headteacher Sarah Carrick, writing in the Ambleside and Brathay parish newsletter, said: “We are very fortunate to have a wonderful mountain and lake environment right on our doorstep and e aim to focus on bringing the outdoors inside.”

St. Cuthbert’s School Bake Off for Macmillan

This month Mary Berry and Paul Holywood had some direct competition as the children and families of St Cuthbert's, Windermere took up the baking challenge for their 'Big Macmillan Coffee Morning.'

Added to the money raised from the visit by David Seaman, the school has amassed an amazing £450 for the charity - a real success from a small village school. The Macmillan event was the culmination of time spent in school discussing the work of the charity and the very special nurses who care for so many families hit by cancer. Headteacher Peter Harrison told us the significance of "children appreciating the importance of supporting good causes that exist through fundraising such as Macmillan. There are special people in our world and Macmillan nurses are exactly that."

As well as families in attendance, members of the Parish, residents of Windermere and visitors joined the school and came together with a real sense of community and shared interest. The Head would like to formally thank everybody who has played a part in making this fundraiser a real celebration.

Hawkshead Prep - Fairtrade and winter veg Hawkshead school pupils have harvested lots of vegetables this new term from the school garden. In addition, they have weeded, dug and prepared the ground for winter vegetables.

Meanwhile the KS 1 children grew some magnificent sunflowers which were over 7 foot tall!

As part of the school's work on sustainability the children in Years 5/6 have been learning about the Fair Trade movement. Pupils took pyjamas and a teddy to school to partake in a Fair Trade breakfast, Fair Trade games and an assembly. Also the Tuck shop is now selling Fair Trade products.

Fair Trade themselves came up from London to take photos of the event, which will be used on their website to promote Fair Trade week next March.

The school Cricket Club hosted a friendly match against Ambleside, everybody had an enjoyable game which will help bring on their skills.

A new learning Esperance at Windermere Jetty Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories is introducing Esperance, a collection of seven projects that marks the start of their schools programme, run by museum staff in collaboration with creative partners and local businesses.

This exciting opportunity for schools will enable selected classes to experience this new museum first hand. Esperance is open to

applications from all schools with priority given to schools wishing to embed cultural learning into their curriculum. Windermere Jetty would like to hear from schools by Thursday 22nd October.

Fantastic Dahlicious Dress-Up Day

now at John Ruskin School, briefly returned to deliver a mini talk with questions and answers about their secondary school for pupils looking at moving up in the future.

This will be a working destination, committed to conserving, saving and sharing an internationally important boat collection. They will tell the stories behind these boats and actively involve children in the crafts and tradition that built them. Every visit will give an invaluable insight into a vital part of our national and local history while making children part of life on the lake. Windermere Jetty will re-open in 2017.

Football star opens School Playground

Many of the classrooms have had new lights installed over the summer, some rooms have been decorated, our school kitchen has a new door and the school looks a little different now that the water tower has been removed.

School improvement is ongoing; this year the Government have continued with their education reforms. Staff from all the local primary schools met for a shared training day to learn about the changes to curriculum for this year.

We like to enhance our curriculum by taking the children out and about on visits, so far this term Year 4 have been to Grizedale Forest and Year 2 have been to St Catherine’s Wood and to Leighton Moss. October brings the annual residential trip for Year 5 and Year 6, this year we are off to Patterdale Hall for our adventures.

Year 1 are planning to Abbot Hall and Year 3 are going to Vindolander at Hadrian’s Wall.

As part of the Christian Character of our school, we actively fundraise and have begun with a very successful McMillan coffee morning and are looking forward to our annual Harvest Festival. Towards the end of September we welcomed Nico and Keith from the ‘Boxes of Hope’ charity to school to share their work on the show box appeal and the work with the children in Rumania. Later this term we will welcome our friends from The Royal British legion to commemorate Remembrance and lay wreaths at our war memorial.

Windermere Preparatory School was overrun by characters from some of Roald Dahl’s best loved books as the school embraced all the fun and inventiveness of the Dahlicious Dress Up Day. The Dahlicious Dress Up Day is a fun-filled fancy dress day in aid of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. On Friday 25th September the school hall was an exciting roll call of Oompa-Loompas, Willy Wonkas, Matildas and the occasional Fantastic Mr Fox, to name but a few. Even more exciting for the children was that morning assembly was taken by Mr Willy Wonka himself (aka Mr Freeman, the Headmaster)!

Each child is asked to bring in £1 to donate to the charity, which believes that every child has the right to a more marvellous

life, no matter how ill they are, or how short their life may be.

The money raised is used to provide specialist children’s nurses and support for families living in poverty whilst caring for a seriously ill child.

Mrs Ferreira, Head of English at the School, was full of praise for the children and the staff; “We’ve had such an exciting day. It was great to see so many children, and staff, make such a huge effort with their costumes.

Trying to get one past David Seaman Former England goalkeeper David Seaman and ex-Arsenal player officially opened the new play area at St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School, which has been funded by a £30,000 grant from Sport England's Primary Spaces fund, as well as some input from the school.

Seaman, who was in the Lake District on holiday and also visited Windermere Golf Club, spent time chatting with excited pupils and their families, signed autographs and posed for pictures before cutting a red ribbon.

Children and parents then took part in a penalty shootout against Seaman, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

28 Oct - A Halloween Lantern Walk, led by Mel Gard through Brantwood’s woodland gardens from 4.30pm until 6.00pm, is an opportunity to bring lanterns made at the workshop to light your way. Spare lanterns will be available for those who have not made their own at the workshop. The walk will lead to a bonfire, with storytelling and songs. Tickets cost £6.00 per child (from age 2 – 15), £8.00 per adult and must be pre-booked. This is a family event and all children need to be accompanied by an adult. The story-telling is particularly suitable for 4-10 year olds but younger and older children are welcome too. The walk is not long or strenuous, but little ones will need guidance over the uneven ground and steps. A little adventure and lots of fun! The event is able to carry on in inclement weather so come prepared with warm clothes, waterproofs and wellies if necessary!

28 Oct - Adult Lantern Walk & Quiet Contemplation, led by Mel Gard also on Wednesday 28th October 2015 7pm-8.30pm. The enchanting lantern-lit walk through Brantwood’s estate is a special treat for adults as well as the children. Ancient `Samhain` is a special time to honour the ancestors and the dark phase of the natural year. Mel will explain all as you experience the wonder of Brantwood’s woodlands in the dark following a path of twinkling lights.

Tickets cost £8 per adult (from age 16) and must be pre-booked.
