High Flying Rotarians
Ulverston Rotarians Philip Longman, 77, and Glyn Spalding, 75, are raising money for the Lake District Calvert Trust because they believe so strongly in their work. The Lake District Calvert Trust is an adventure centre situated on Bassenthwaite Lake providing outdoor activities and excitement for people with disabilities. For many years, Lancashire and Cumbrian Rotary Clubs have sponsored a party of disabled people to enjoy a week-long Calvert Trust Adventure. Philip and Glyn have been part of the resident Rotarian team for the Rotary Adventure Week for many years. Numbering around 50 the team is always extremely diverse in terms of age and disability. Whatever age or disability everyone soon befriends everyone else. Glynn said, “It is such an uplifting experience to see this happen and there is no doubt that the Rotarian team members and the professional carers benefit as well as the candidates from the joy that is generated throughout the week.”
The Calvert Trust staff are dedicated, caring and skilled and ensure this week is an exhilarating and memorable one for all participants.
A sign on the back of one of the benches states, “Surprise yourself every day by your courage”. Everyone there overcomes some fear to do something that they have never done before. Nearly everyone completes every challenge from rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, sailing, ghyll scrambling, swimming, horse riding to flying down the zip wire. The Calvert Trust is a not for profit making charity and subsidises courses by 10%. So fundraising and obtaining sponsorship is an integral part of its work. On 9th July at Flookburgh Phil and Glynn overcame some of their fears to raise funds for the Trust by taking to the skies - and then jumping out of the plane, skydiving back to planet earth.

On July 12th South Lakes Housing and Cumbria Choice held a pre-planning application consultation event to invite initial comments on their plans for the Town Hall. While preserving the historic exterior and some interior architectural details, the main building will be converted into apartments. The rear annexe will be demolished and rebuilt for more apartments, although the ‘footprint’ of the building will stay the same. This is a ‘not for profit’ development, and all the apartments will be available to rent for people registered with Cumbria Choice, the register for social housing. If you missed the consultation, you will be able to comment in the usual way on the full planning application after it has been submitted.

Well-Deserved Queen’s Award for Barrow Food Bank With two paid staff and nearly 100 volunteers Barrow food bank, is a real community project. The central warehouse in Abbey Road Baptist Church, Barrow stores donated food and prepares packed boxes ready to go out across south west Cumbria. It has local distribution points at Bethany Church in Ulverston and Baptist Church in Millom. It works closely with 200 referral agencies to supply emergency food parcels to those in need. Started in 2012 it collected the second highest amount of all food banks in the country. Five years later they are still giving away an average of 6.6 tonnes of food a month. A dietician from the Trusell Trust who support the nationwide network of 420 food banks reviews the food parcels annually to ensure a balanced diet is provided. But today they are running out. Why? Not because of a decrease of generosity but mostly, according to the food bank due to an ongoing change in the government’s welfare system resulting in a delay in benefits by up to six weeks. There has been an increase in outgoings by 30%. Families on low incomes can find themselves in need of help if an unexpected bill needs paying, through ill health or the breakdown of relationships resulting in separation or divorce and the financial implications involved. The U.K. is the world’s sixth richest country and yet 1 in 5 live below the poverty line. The food bank aims to help those thirteen million people break the cycle of poverty. But the need is far greater than simply supplying food. Ann Mills, project manager said, “The food bank is a little bit of kindness in the midst of it all.”
Here people receive a warm welcome and a cuppa. It gives people back their dignity and works hard to prevent social segregation. This place also acts like a sign post directing people to where they can receive the help they need, whether it is a chat with Citizens Advice Bureau staff member, discussing tasty and economical ways to cook great meals, financial advice and fuel banks. In 2015 N Power was fined a record £26 million for “failing to treat customers fairly” part of this fine has been used to create a ‘fuel bank’ to help those in difficulty with paying their utility bills. BFB gave out £37000 in fuel vouchers between November 2016 and May this year. There are strict anti fraud policies in place to prevent the system from being abused like any other food business the food bank is inspected annually by Environmental Health and they must abide by all food regulations. Confidentiality and data protection are vital to the future of the project. The ultimate penalty for fraudsters is permanent exclusion from the Food Bank.
Ulverston Mind The Mayor’s Charity Paul Smith has chosen Ulverston Mind as his charity for the year. For over 25 years the charity has worked in Ulverston to support those facing issues with their mental health, to challenge the stigma around mental health and to encourage mental well-being. As the CEO, Jane Gordon says, ‘Royalty and celebrities have been raising awareness about the importance of talking about mental health issues through drawing on their own experiences and the effect on their lives. At Ulverston Mind we agree that talking about our mental health can be a vital first step to accessing the right help and support we might need to improve our well-being. Our drop-in, peer support, counselling and Connecting Mums services run from venues in the heart of the town
making them part of our community and accessible to more people.’ Ulverston Mind always welcomes new volunteers for their groups, the allotment project, their counselling service and peer support activities, and new members of the trustee board, especially those with skills in campaigning, fundraising, HR, legal issues, marketing and governance. If you don’t have the time to be a trustee or volunteer, you can still contribute as part of our team and use your skills by offering courses in anything from cookery to creative writing, or by becoming an ‘expert friend’ we can call on for advice when needed. Ann Mills praised the people of her town, “Barrow is not a rich town but it has the most generous community.” “If everyone donated one can once a year, the food bank would be fully stocked for twelve months, with a bit left over.” Only two charities in Cumbria have received the Queen’s award for voluntary service this year. Ann Mills received this equivalent to an individual’s MBE, on behalf of all the volunteers. The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, will be presenting the foodbank with their letter from the Queen and their crystal dome on 15th August at Forum 28. “It is a real boost to all who are involved,“ she said. This award is the highest given to volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in the community. 64.689 tonnes of food have been given out in the last financial year across south west Cumbria and none of that would be possible without the help of volunteers in Ulverston, Dalton, Millom, Grange over Sands, Cartmel and Barrow.

For all job seekers out there, it is worth noting that almost 50% of all attendees at the fair in February got placements! Town Councillor Norman Bishop-Rowe who leads the event on behalf of Ulverston Community Partnership together with Ulverston Town Council and JobCentre Plus in Barrow have all done a fantastic job in pulling together these successful fairs for job seekers, trainees and prospective volunteers all around Furness. Profile of the Mayor of Ulverston,
Paul Smith Paul Smith is a very modest man, a quality epitomised by his view of the Civic Service, when he was officially installed as mayor, as being not about him but about Ulverston and the people who don’t get recognition for all they do for the town. Trying to get him to talk about himself can be hard, but he has confessed that he has always been a Star Wars geek who has never got over the realisation that he would never fight in an intergalactic space battle. Instead, he is fighting the good fight for community groups in Ulverston. Born in Barrow, by accident, as he says, since his parents were visiting his grandparents at the time, he moved to Ulverston with his family when he was five. Although after school he moved away to study, ending up in London where he met his wife Charlotte. They decided to make their home back in Ulverston drawn by the sense that it would be a good place to bring up a family, and with the arrival of Sophie and Theo, Ulverston has not only met but exceeded their expectations. Paul always claims that he stood for the town council because Charlotte, fed up with his constant grumblings about local issues told him to “put up or shut up.” This hides his dedication, and the way he puts into practice his belief that one of the roles of a town councillor is to help
Repairs to the Town Clock
The Ulverston town clock have been a hot topic since repairs to the clock changed the sound of its chimes. New repairs to the clock end of July are set to solve the temporary dissonance - and the clock should be back to its old chiming self! people realise they have the skills and power to make a difference for themselves. He supported the Croftlands Castle Community Project in its effort to rebuild and improve the play area after its castle was burnt down, and the establishment of Friends of Lightburn Park, driven by local residents, which has seen significant improvements and investment to the park. It is these successes, local people doing things for themselves, that gives Paul a real sense of pride in Ulverston and what is achieved here. As he says himself, “I see the role of Mayor as helping to highlight the work of volunteer groups and events going on in the town that might not otherwise get the coverage they deserve,” and in this spirit his chosen charity is Ulverston Mind. Since he won’t blow his own trumpet, it’s left to his children, Sophie and Theo, to do it for him, saying “I’m proud of dad,” and “My dad’s very friendly and likes doing things for people.”

- GSK ANNOUNCEMENT On the 19th of July GlaxoSmithKline released news that they are no longer proceeding with the planned new biopharmaceutical facility in Ulverston - initially announced in 2012. The reason given was that GSK no longer needs the additional capacity.
GSK is stating that it will also undertake a strategic review of its cephalosporins antibiotics business, with an option to sell the business including the associated manufacturing facilities. These medicines are produced at GSK sites in Ulverston, Verona in Italy and part of GSK’s Barnard Castle site. South Lakeland District Council’s portfolio holder for the economy, Councillor Graham Vincent, commented “We are shocked
and disappointed to see today’s announcement from GSK”. He also said, the news that the company was not going to proceed with its previously planned investment was a blow, but stressed the authority’s immediate concern now was to understand the implications for the future of the current site and the existing GSK employees in Ulverston.
Cllr Vincent continued “We understand that there will be no immediate impact on the existing workforce and we are fully committed to doing all that we can to assist GSK, its staff and the wider Ulverston community. We will work with the company, the local MP, town, county and district councillors and Cumbria LEP to offer whatever support is necessary.“

Local Furniture Outlet Continues to Expand

from St Mary’s Hospice St Mary’s Hospice celebrated its biggest ever Walk to Remember on July 7th. The night saw crowds of up to 700 people gather at the Ulverston Leisure Centre ready to tackle the ten miles to Furness Academy. The success of the night can be attributed to the hard work of the St Mary’s team, the volunteers and all of the wonderful supporters, including the team of B.A.E marshals and first aiders who ensured everyone’s safety on the walk. This year the walk welcomed men, women, girls and boys.
We’d also like to thank our furry friends for joining us and their owners who were delighted to present their dogs with medals at the finish line!
St Mary’s will have final figures later in the year when all the sponsorship money comes in, but to give an idea: if everyone who took part manages to achieve £30 sponsorship this could cover 127 Hospice at Home visits or provide 45 individual nights of care on their Inpatient Unit.
St Mary’s Hospice Furniture Outlet re-opened in a blaze of glory on 22nd June at their new premises situated at 299-301 Duke Street Barrow.
The move from Wilkie Way, will ensure there is even more space to store furniture, and is further evidence of how successful the warehouse has become.

Ulverston BID Update Public Meeting – Oct 3rd
Local people can find out how Ulverston Business Improvement District been spending the money it collects from businesses in the town, and give their ideas for future spending, at a public meeting organised by the BID at the Coronation Hall on Tuesday October 3rd. Before the BID meeting at 7.00 pm, at 6.30pm the Environment Agency will give a presentation on the flood alleviation works going on in the town. BID chair Chris Nelson explains: “The BID levy raises almost £100,000 each year which must be spent in Ulverston for improvements in the town or for local initiatives benefiting the town. So far the BID projects have included new Christmas lights for the town, planting for Ulverston in Bloom, advertising beyond the town to bring in new visitors, and the creation of the www.chooseulverston.co.uk website. But we don’t have a monopoly on good ideas, so we want people to come forward with ideas for how the money can be spent for Ulverston.” The BID management board is made up of volunteers drawn from more than 450 businesses which pay the BID levy each year. Over the next 3 years one third of the board is up for election each year and BID levy payers can vote on who sits on the board, and nominate new board members. In South Lakeland, it is projected that the number of people with dementia aged 65 and over will be approximately 2,300 by 2020 and Ulverston Dementia Action Alliance are working to support those with dementia and their families and friends. The Alliance has distributed a concertina leaflet on ‘Dementia Friendly Tips for Friends and Neighbours’, and shops and businesses in Ulverston now have these to hand out to their customers. They will be facilitating an event at the Coronation Hall on 21st September where local organisations can share information about their work and the services they provide for people with dementia and their families. They also hope to develop a directory of local services and arrange presentations from experts in dementia care. As the Alliance says “If only more people knew how easy it is to talk about dementia and how important it is to talk about it. Kirkby Moor Wind Farm seeks extension
Residents who received their newsletter will know that Kirkby Moor Wind Farm will soon apply for planning permission to keep the wind farm operating until March 2027. Kirkby Moor is one of the oldest onshore wind farms, having been built in 1993, and since wind farms are usually given planning permission to operate for 25 years, the current planning permission will run out next year. Originally the plan was to replace the present set-up with a smaller number of larger turbines, but in 2015 SLDC rejected this application, so the operators hope that by maintaining the current turbines they can keep generating electricity for another 8 years or so. The wind farm will therefore stay the same, apart from the possible removal of one turbine as the quarry expands, and the operator stresses that when the farm is finally decommissioned they will restore the moorland to a higher standard than is required by the current planning permission. They will also increase the Community Benefit Fund for local good causes to at least £22,000 a year, having already provided over £35,000 for community projects since 2008. On average the wind farm, which is owned by Zephyr Investments, one of the largest private equity investors in renewable energy, and run by Innogy, generates enough electricity a year to power 2,700 houses. Onshore wind farms are loved by some and opposed by others, so if you missed the public consultation on these plans on July 19th, you can contact the operators with your comments, and watch out for the planning application so that you can give your view to SLDC. SLDC turns down houses at Lund Farm
The SLDC planning committee has rejected controversial plans for more than a hundred new houses on land at Lund Farm. Although the committee had various reasons for their decision, including the style of the affordable housing and the way the development would obscure views of the town, residents’ concerns over flood risk were also taken into account. The committee agreed that they should wait until results of the Environment Agency’s flood mapping of south Ulverston were known, a decision in line with national guidance discouraging more house-building on floodplains.

‘The Marches’ Rory Stewart Jonathan Cape 2016 £18.99 from Sutton’s Bookshop
‘The Marches’ was the worthy overall winner of this year’s ‘Lakeland Book of the Year’ award and although it is categorised as Biography/Travel it is much more than this. Rory Stewart, the MP for Penrith and the Border, is not your usual career politician, having served in the Black Watch, worked for the Foreign Office, walked 6,000 miles across Asia and governed two provinces in Iraq. He has based this book on two walks he undertook, the first along Hadrian’s Wall and the second from his home in Cumbria to his father’s house in Crieff. Interwoven with descriptions of the landscape and of the people he met along the way are reflections on his own life but more especially on the life of his father, Brian Stewart,
who fought in Normandy and also had a varied career as a colonial official and intelligence officer. Mr Stewart also ponders on imperialism from the Romans to recent British interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, how depopulated the countryside has become, the nature of ‘Englishness’ and ‘Scottishness’ and the arbitrary nature of the modern England/ Scotland border. His father was interested in the concept of the ‘Middleland’, the forgotten country of southern Scotland and Cumbria, and Mr Stewart delves into its history and the way it has vanished. He ends with an account of his father’s death and funeral, and even those who do not share his views will find this a moving and thought-provoking book.

The little town at the ‘end of a cul-desac’ has many secrets just waiting to be discovered, and in Secret Barrow-inFurness local author and historian Gill Jepson pulls back the curtains of history to reveal the forgotten, the strange, and the unlikely.

Check out the Bronze age stone circle, the Sunbrick Burial Ground, a trig Column and some stunning panoramic views of the Coniston Fells, Morecambe Bay and Black Combe.
BARDSEA
Ample parking and plenty of benches to sit and appreciate the views across the sands of Morecambe Bay. If packing your own picnic is not appealing, there is hot food in the Chill and Grill and locally renowned home-made ice cream from Roy’s Ices van parked along the coast. Public toilets too.
FELL FOOT
At the south end of Lake Windermere this National Trust country park has a little for everyone and is continually developing. Both for family fun and those who prefer solitude, Fell Foot offers a café and shop, adventure playground, easy access to the lake, kayak and canoe hire and open 14

rolling lawns on which to lay your rugs and chairs. Don’t forget the nearby meadow through a tunnel of trees. A gentle stroll southwards along a grassy path cut through wildflowers brings you to a lone bench, a peaceful place of calm overlooking the River Leven. The annual stone skimming championships in August always attract attention.
HIGH DAM
On the west side of Lake Windermere and 1.5km above Finsthwaite is an artificial tarn surrounded by nothing but natural woodland and rocky well marked pathways laced with tree roots making intricate patterns on the ground. Although a popular place with local dog walkers it is off the beaten path of most of the Lake District’s well known tourist destinations. You could easily be alone here, enjoying the bench with a view of the trees’ reflections in the very still waters of the tarn. Park at the Stott Bobbin Mill or the Lake District National Park Authority carpark and walk to Low Dam and then onto High Dam.
GUMMERS HOWE
For those who prefer a view with altitude, head up to Gummer’s How, a local word for hill or mound and 321m above sea level. For the most part the walk is easy until the last stretch when it becomes steeper. The view of Lake Windermere is worth the effort.
RAYRIGG MEADOW
Just north of Bowness along the East side of Lake Windermere this place offers

plenty of fun for your car park fee. It has a water sports centre, full sized football pitch, children’s play area, picnic and BBQ area, toilets, jetties and friendly access to the edge of the lake.
CONISTON LAKE
The road at the south of the lake has recently been resurfaced. Without the potholes, the lay byes provide a very pleasant aspect and are less than 10 miles from Ulverston. Free to park but no facilities other than access to the lake itself.
YEW TREE TARN
Beyond Coniston this small picturesque tarn, stocked with trout that are often evident, is a fisherman’s paradise. The short circuit round its edge has a bench and plenty of places to spread out the picnic rug and plates. It also links with Oxen Fell and Holme Fell for those who want to stretch their legs. Free parking without facilities at the side of the A593.
ROANHEAD
Turn right off the A590 before Barrow and head towards the wide expanse of sandy beaches at Roanhead, a National Trust conservation area. Access has been made easier with managed walkways and a recently developed car park with 40 spaces and a café. It is dog friendly but also home to a diverse wildlife population and an abundance of birds. An interesting information board explains the fells that form the impressive backdrop to this stunning beach. Watch out for family activity days in August.
While it’s always pleasant to go for a stroll on a fine evening, sometimes it’s good to have a walk with a purpose. To help build a picture of how bats are doing nowadays, between April and September the Bat Conservation Trust runs an open-ended survey in which anyone can take part. This is idea for non-experts and their friends and family since all you have to do is arm yourself with a survey form (which you can download), a pencil or pen, a torch and a watch and time your walk so you reach somewhere where there might be bats at sunset. You then spend an hour recording bats and any other nocturnal animals you might see or hear. If you know of a bat roost, it is ideal to go there at sunset, so you can see the bats emerging. Alternatively, early risers or insomniacs can head for a roost an hour before sunrise to count bats swarming in at dawn. The beauty of this survey is that you don’t need to be able to distinguish between the most common British bats, namely the common and soprano pipistrelle, the brown long-eared bat, the noctule and Daubenton’s bat, because you can just write ‘bat’ on the form. If it is mild, you can even take an hour to sit in your garden and fill in the survey, and since bats are often seen around the railway bridge over Ulverston canal, you could combine the survey with a leisurely walk from the Bay Horse. Head Out, Not Home
On a fine evening what could be better than packing up a picnic, whether it’s an elaborate hamper or a simple sandwich and drink, and heading off to one of our many local beauty spots. Here we give some ideas of the ideal place for al fresco dining, as well as some other suggestions for making the most of the rest of the summer.
Safe Cycling the Bay Way Cycling has shot up in popularity in recent years, and more and more people are putting on stretchy fabric and pedalling up hill and down dale in Furness and the Lakes. However, struggling up a steep road with cars and lorries whizzing by doesn’t make for a relaxing fun evening for families or those who are unlikely to be mistaken for Chris Froome. Luckily the award-winning Bay Cycle Way from Walney to Glasson Dock has off-road stretches which can easily be tackled by anyone. An initial trip for small pedallers and those who maybe haven’t been on a bike for a while would be to miss the opening on-road stretch from Sandy Gap on Walney and pick up the route in Morrisons car park. From here you can go on a traffic-free cycle way to Rampside, taking in Barrow’s industrial past and present from a different angle. Canal towpaths are perfect for
safe cycling, and, if you can take your bikes to Carnforth, meandering south along the canal from the Canal Turn public house gives you lovely sunset views of Morecambe Bay. If you have time you can leave the towpath at Hammerton Bridge and follow the signposted cycle route through housing and the park into Lancaster with all its opportunities for re-fuelling. The cycle way from Lancaster’s St George’s Quay to Glasson Dock has a tiny stretch on a quiet road but otherwise is completely traffic-free, and is another pleasant ride, along the Lune in places, with the added advantage of handy pubs at Glasson Dock. Some of the other sections of the Cycle Way involve hills, but none of them are on main roads, and so you can plan your own route to enjoy a lycra-free evening on two wheels. Chris Brammall
Chris Brammall is one of the leading architectural and sculptural metalworkers in Great Britain. His portfolio comprises both private commissions and works within the public realm and include bridges, gates, railings, restoration and heritage pieces, sculpture, furniture, home accessories, specialist fabrication and more.
Chris’s award winning pieces, created in his 750sqm self-built workshop in Ulverston can be found all over the country and include several right here on our own doorstep. He has certainly contributed much to the unique aesthetic of Ulverston town. The Cumbria Way marker sits proudly within the Gill car park and denotes the beginning of the famed walk from Ulverston to Carlisle. Themed furniture adorns the Rope Walk located at Outcast and acts as a memorial to the area’s history of rope making. Chris’s latest Ulverston based creations, the striking new signs and welcome points at the Canal give the site a new sense of place as well as celebrate and bring to life the history and heritage of the canal. Chris, you work with a wide variety of materials and techniques, can you tell us about some of these and how you decide which to use on a particular project?
A great deal of thought and consideration is given to selecting the right material and fabrication process for each of our bespoke projects. We use a mix of techniques including traditional blacksmithing right through to modern day fabrication and welding. When choosing materials we consider numerous elements - the landscape and environment, the purpose of the project - whether this is more sculptural or has a practical element such as a bridge for example. It’s important that our designs give the work a sense of place and of course achieves our clients aspirations and vision and that means using a mix of materials such as stainless steel, weathering steel, bronze, timber, glass and stone. Is it important to you to be involved in every stage from design right through to the installation of the finished piece?
Absolutely – both on a personal level but also that’s what sets us apart from our competitors. For me there is no better buzz than seeing one of my designs come to life in my own workshop – and if I can get to the forge to build part of it myself even better! How many people make up Team Brammall?
Currently we have a fifteen strong team across the workshop and studio. For me it’s not really about the quantity of people more the quality of the skills and craft of each individual – particularly the tradesmen who need to have a passion and love for the pieces and projects they are building and we are really lucky in that respect.
There was a re-awakening of interest in blacksmithing in the 70’s with the rise of DIY and self-sufficiency culture, what state is this ancient industry in today? I think it’s actually quite positive. It’s nice to see young people starting to come back into the trade – you have to have a particular eye for attention to detail to be a blacksmith as well as a love and passion for the trade. We have an apprentice blacksmith joining us in September and I’m looking forward to mentoring him and passing on my skills and experience.
What are you working on currently and how many projects do you tend to work on simultaneously? Depending upon the size of projects we can have up to five or six running simultaneously. At the moment we have a couple of high-profile projects for clients in London (hush, hush!) and we are also developing an interpretation scheme for a project called ‘Black to Green’ in the Heart of the Forest, Leicestershire which celebrates the change of sites which were once coalpits and industrial and are now
green land and providing a natural habitat for wildlife and nature. Do you have a piece that you are particularly proud of?
There are so many – and all for different reasons but most recently it has to be The Spitfire. When the DCS Group moved to new headquarters in Banbury they wanted a sculpture to commemorate the site as the former Northern Aluminium Company and the important role it played during the Battle of Britain (‘The Ally’ as the factory was known produced metal for fighter planes). My design starts with a compass built into the ground symbolizing the navigation of aircraft. From the base ribbons of steel flow upwards gradually metamorphosing into the form of a Spitfire. A huge amount of emphasis was put into the design development so much so that the front of The Spitfire is built to a scale of around a third. The team I had working with me on this project just loved being part of it – and you can really feel that when you see the sculpture now it’s complete. People ask me why I didn’t build it from aluminum – and that’s a good question but it comes back to selecting the right material for the right environment and with the right finish.
What has been your biggest challenge? There hasn’t been one particular project that stands out as being my biggest challenge – they are all challenging in different ways. My team would probably say it’s keeping me grounded! UVHS end the term in style Ulverston Victoria High School’s well acclaimed music department once again showcased their outstanding talent at the summer concert at the Coronation Hall.
Just weeks after the magnificent joint concert with the Royal Marines, Richard Butler and several ensembles were back to entertain at the same venue.
The impressive Junior Band opened the evening’s event, showing the future generation is as exciting as the one before it.
Clarinet choir, the String Orchestra, Brass
and Percussion Ensemble and the Choir all provided immense variety on a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The final segment of the night saw the UVHS Wind Band play, on what was their last performance before their tour of the Rhine Valley in Germany.
DogFest going large A popular annual music festival is set to become Furness’ largest outdoor music event in 2017. Dogfest, held at the Black Dog Pub in Dalton, is set to treble in size since last summer. This year’s event, on Sunday 27th August, has already seen Carlisle rock and roll outfit, Hardwicke Circus been confirmed as the headline act. The young seven-piece, have already got appearances under their belt at Glastonbury, Kendal Calling, Leeds and Reading Festival.
Leading names from the Furness area make up much of the line-up, with favourites The Sun Kings making another appearance, after impressing at last year’s event. 20

Since the first Dogfest in 2014, the festival has grown beyond recognition. This year’s move to the field opposite the pub means there will be at least three times as many tickets available than in previous years.

Dalton Town Band Band Visits South Coast for Summer Tour Dalton Town Band travelled to the picturesque South Coast for their annual tour this year. Led by conductor Mark Latimer, the band, played two concerts in Weymouth and Bournemouth respectively. Planning has already started for a possible extended trip to Belgium next summer, after last year’s trip to the Rhine Valley in Germany proved to be a great success. As well as August’s trip to the South Coast, the band has played at several engagements this summer, including Barrow and Grange bandstand. Conductor Mark Latimer said “we’ve had a productive summer so far and it’s been thoroughly enjoyable. It can be stressful organising for the band to go away but all the tours we have been on have been well worth it”.
Extra rehearsals for people interested in learning an instrument Dalton Town Band are planning extra rehearsals for people who are interested in learning a brass instrument. The band currently rehearses on a Friday evening at the Guide’s Drill Hall on Market Street, Dalton.
However, there are proposed plans to start extra practices on Tuesday evenings for newcomers as well as people who have previously played a brass instrument. The band will provide anyone who wishes to attend with a free instrument.
Conductor Mark Latimer said, “I think it is a perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to try something different, or re-visit an old skill. It can be very intimidating joining a band if you haven’t played in a long-time, so this is the ideal opportunity to be eased back in slowly”. The extra practices are due to start in the first week of September.
Balance - at Natterjacks Balance - an exhibition tied in with the Buddhist summer festival by three members of South Lakes Arts Collective at Natterjacks on Queen Street in Ulverston. The three artists are Faiqa, painter, who works in Barrow, Marilyn Hale, glass artist, Newlands glass studio and
Shivangi Pandey, award winning Indian painter, who lives and works in New Delhi in India. Balance runs from 24 July to 1 Sept. Natterjacks is open Monday to Friday 3pm till 10pm.
The Producers Ulverston Amateurs’ show in September is based on the 1968 film, Mel Brooks’s musical ‘The Producers’. It’s a hilarious, outrageous, crowd pleasing farce which has been a smash hit ever since its debut in 2001. The story goes that down on his luck Broadway producer, Max Bialystock is trying to get back to the top of his profession. A chance encounter with the mousy, timid accountant Leo Bloom is about to change Max’s fortunes forever with a get-rich-quick scheme.
Together they set out to produce the worst musical ever to hit the Broadway stage. A musical with the worst script, the worst
‘has-been’ director together with the absolutely worst cast they can find.
Max and Leo plan to raise two million dollars to finance the show, sit back and wait for the show to flop, to close on opening night and then head off to Rio with the spoils. A faultless plan - they think!

Ulverston in Bloom Cross their Fingers On Thursday July 6th the two Cumbria in Bloom Judges, John Thomson and Mary Wilson, came to judge Ulverston’s entry into the Pride in our Community competition. With Jayne Kendall, Town Clerk and Kim Farr, Chair of Ulverston in Bloom, they walked through town looking at the planting along Market Street, along the A590, the Coronation Hall, the Gill, carparks and the Factory Shop Community Garden. In addition they talked to Sarah McCormack, the Community Link Gardener at Ford Park, George Sharpe, one of the gardening team at the Parish Church, Scott Mackenzie at the Sun Inn, the Ulverston in Bloom volunteers at Jubilee Gardens, Deborah Clarke (SLDC) at Lightburn Park, Colin Smith at the Wildlife Haven and Canal Foot and Pat Mciver at GSK. It was a great town team effort and Ulverston in Bloom now have to wait until they are invited to the Awards Ceremony in Silloth on the afternoon of 21st September. Oscar-style they will find out the results “live” and then get a detailed report afterwards.

Hurrying by Canal Foot, I caught sight of someone trying to move a great solid mass of something into the channel. An onlooker told me it was a stranded jellyfish. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to get close-up, but I’m guessing it was a Lion’s Mane, the largest jellyfish to frequent UK waters. These can be up to 3 feet in diameter, and while the bad news is that their tentacles can give a sting like an electric shock even when they are dead, the good news is that no-one has ever died from such a sting. In summer months it’s quite usual to see masses of common jellyfish covering the mud when the tide recedes. Also known as moon or saucer jellyfish, these are almost transparent apart from the 4 reproductive organs in their centres, and they use small tentacles fringing their bells and 4 ‘arms’ to catch little fish and planktonic species like molluscs and young worms. On the one hand they are born survivors, since they can stand water temperatures as low as -6ºC and as high as 31ºC, and they can tolerate water which is low in salt and dissolved oxygen. They have few predators in our seas, although seabirds might attack them for the prey caught in their bells. On the other hand, they can only swim horizontally and they drift with currents, which explains why so many get washed up. The sight of hundreds of these jellyfish can be off-putting, but their sting isn’t strong enough to affect humans, so there is no need for alarm.
Kitchen Garden
August is one of the most exciting months in the garden and if you are a kitchen gardener, there will be a wellworn path between the garden and the house. It is a joyful thing indeed to indulge the senses in the picking and preparation of freshly picked produce. There is nothing quite like the smells and tastes of garden harvest. And of course, it is obligatory to announce to whoever gets to enjoy your food that you have grown it yourself. Water your vegetable plants and fruit plants daily in warm weather and fruiting plants like tomatoes and courgettes need feeding at least twice a week. It’s also important to open the door to greenhouse or polytunnel so that your plants don’t get too hot and burn. You can also remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease and pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Don’t let them
grow any taller now and aim for about 5 trusses of fruit per plant. Enjoy! You can feed your sweetcorn with tomato food to get the best cobs and use a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food for peppers, cucumber and aubergines. Cut back herbs now to encourage new tasty young leaves and you can freeze your herbs to use in winter. Pinch out the tips of your runner bean plants once they reach the top of their support and this will encourage more beans at a perfect height for picking. Harvest french and runner beans frequently and pick runner beans to make room for developing pods. You should be enjoying rhubarb, the first apples and pears, gooseberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants now too. If you are going away, do remember to ask a neighbour or willing family member to pick your flowers, salad and veg to prevent everything running to seed in your absence.

Potentially Difficult Start to Season for Bluebirds
Barrow AFC face a potentially difficult start to their 2017/18 Campaign in the National League. The fixtures have seen Paul Cox’s side start with a difficult away trip to Dagenham and Redbridge and have further challenging away days to Dover Athletic and AFC Fylde in the first few weeks of the season.

On Sunday 2nd July the annual presentation day for Dalton Junior Football Club was held at Dalton United’s Railway Meadow ground. There was a very impressive buffet put on, which got a lot of compliments from the guests. A great turn out saw the kids enjoy the bouncy castle, beat the goalie, soak the coach, fastest shot, ice creams and so much more! All the players received their individual awards in recognition and celebration of their season at Dalton Juniors. The committee would like to thank players and their families, coaches and sponsors for a successful season as the club continues to grow and flourish. A big thank you from the club to the parents and players’ families for providing the superb and tasty buffet. Many thanks to the Dalton United staff who provided a faultless service throughout the day!
Despite a more than respectable 7th place finish, last season ended in disappointment for Bluebird fans, after indifferent form at a crucial stage in the season saw them miss out on a chance of promotion to the Football League. In preparation for the new season, AFC played five preseason friendlies throughout summer. These included a trip to Edgeley Park to play
Stockport Country, as well as games against Boston United and Lancaster City. After speculation that manager Cox could have been persuaded with a move away from Holker Street at the start of the summer, with recently relegated Hartlepool reportedly interested, the 45-year-old will now be fully focused on ensuring Barrow do not make the same mistakes that cost them dear last season.

Mini Medics
Project Pet is a Big Deal A team from UVHS’s inspired idea to tackle loneliness impressed judges at Warwick Business School’s Big Deal Competition 2017 earlier this spring. Team Pawsome - Adi Begaj, Amelia Thompson, Emillie Tyson, Gabrielle Wheeler and Milo Williamson devised a social enterprise called ‘Project Pet’. Their project involved loaning dogs out to elderly people in the local area to help tackle loneliness. This in turn would provide an alternative for dog owners who would have otherwise been placing their pets in kennels. The team made a great presentation and had a well-thought out business strategy, which included sponsored doggy hampers to provide those looking after the dogs with everything needed to care for the dogs successfully. The prize, a trip to Europe, was presented by Craig Bentley, Head Judge and Warwick Business School
MBA alumnus. Craig Bentley said “The reason we decided upon Ulverston was really about the complete picture; it was obvious that they’d used the task to inform their decisions later down the line.”

Team Pawsome also attended the prestigious Brightside Big Deal Mentoring Awards of the year event in London which was presented by Hazel Blears. The Big Deal mentoring programme is run by Warwick Business School, one of the world’s most respected Business Schools and Brightside - a national education charity. It forms part of the University of Warwick’s outreach programme, UniTracks, which targets the most able 14-18 year olds from across the UK promoting the values of higher education and encouraging young people to aspire to study at research intensive universities.
More Orienteering Success for UVHS On a very hot Wednesday afternoon, 43 UVHS orienteers competed in the annual and very long standing Cumbria Schools Orienteering Championships held, this year, at Cartmel.
In July Vics Medics at UVHS staged a Mini Medics Day of talks and workshops for year 9 and 10 students from both UVHS and local schools including Millom, Furness Academy and St Bernhards. Mini medics - and Vics Medics is part of an initiative started two years ago by UVHS and Head of Science Rebecca Hodgson to support and mentor students who are interested in science and medicine. UVHS Sixth Form has had a spectacular success recently with students receiving offers from high profile universities including Cambridge and UCLA. Several of the student offers are in medicine, veterinary medicine and dentistry. Vic Medics do two full day events every year and run weekly events throughout the year which include workshops, operating theatre events and talks by army medics, surgeons, GPs, nurses, consultants, dentists and more.

Lindal and Marton Primary School held their annual Summer Sports Fun Day at Glaxo Sports and Social Club on Friday 14th July. The whole school participated in 9 different sporting activities throughout the day. All of the teachers and teaching staff lead the activity together with instructors. The sports activities included

Urswick WI Summer Concert
A full turn-out of the magnificent Ulverston Town Band greeted the audience at our annual WI Summer Concert in Urswick Church on June 15th. The Band were on top-form and perfect pitch, led as usual by the equally magnificent Mitch, whose humour had us all in “stitches”! The Church was resplendent with the beautiful displays and hangings for the recent Pentecost experience. Grateful thanks were given to Graham Hopkins (aka Gladys Emmanuel, adopted
WI member!) compère for the night, standing in for John Imlach who was away on holiday. We all stood to sing Jerusalem, accompanied as always by our very talented Organist, Kath Miller and the evening then got underway. Thea was our first Soloist, so competent with her beautiful singing voice. Flautists, Anna and Phoebe came next, supporting each other with their exquisite pieces. We were treated to various highlights from the Band too. The evening was brought to a close with everyone singing the beautiful
ACWW Song of Peace and a blessing from Rev. Alan. BIG BIG thanks to all who attended, Ulverston Town Band, the Soloists who took part, the WI Ladies who helped, made shortbread and supported in any way, to make our annual event such an enjoyable success. The proceeds this year are to be shared between Urswick Church and the worthwhile Kigali project. Watch out for the date in December for the annual Carol Concert for another superb evening.

The annual general meeting was held at the end of June when President Charlotte firstly handed over a cheque to Sue Swire of the Alzheimer’s Society. This had been Charlotte’s chosen charity for the year. Charlotte reported on her year in office and was delighted to have been able to enrol five new members to the Club. At the end of the meeting the chain of office was presented to the new president, Irene Jackson who thanked members for giving her the opportunity to be Club President once again, Irene having been President on four previous occasions during her many years of being an active member of the Inner Wheel Club of Ulverston.

An Afternoon Tea was served and monies raised will begin the charity fund for the next Inner Wheel year which begins on the 1st of July.
