Grange Christmas tree lighting

Letter from the Editor

The 68th Annual Christmas tree lighting will take place on 6 December 2014 at 6.00pm. Civic Mayor, Tricia Thomas will do the honours. Go down to Yewbarrow Terrace to enjoy carol singing, with music from Flookburgh Band, and a visit from Santa Claus.

As we go to press, Cumbria County Council have withdrawn their plans for on street parking. After huge expense, public meetings, consultation documents, street marches and countless hours of debate, the decision has been taken to withdraw. Power to the people or a waste of public money - what do you think?

money we can raise the more lights we can put on the tree. We would also like to thank Hadwins Volkswagen for kindly fitting music to Santa’s sleigh, which will be out around the local area during week commencing 8th December. See ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ for full details.

Gary Johnston, treasurer for the Christmas Tree committee told Grange Now: “This is only made possible with donations from local businesses and residents. Collection buckets will also be going round on the night.” You can also drop into Johnston’s of Grange anytime to make a donation, and as Gary rightly pointed out: “The more

The people who are making a real difference to our communities are the voluntary groups of which we have many in the area - there are in fact too many for us to cover but we have given an update on some of the local fundraising and voluntary group achievements in this issue. Don’t miss Taffy Thomas and a fabulous day out at the Grange Christmas Extravaganza on 6th December. Over the last month we have seen a fabulous effort with over 100 ‘shoeboxes of hope’ passing through the Grange Now office headed for Romania.

Michelle Jurd Memorial Ball

Our next deadline is 12th December, out 29th December. Happy Christmas one and all.

The Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust (MJMT) was formed in 2010 in memory of former RAF officer, Michelle Jurd, who was tragically killed in a car crash on the A590 in November 2009. The first charity ball took place in November 2010 and, incredibly, the event raised £16,000.

Christmas Shoeboxes Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Shoebox appeal. This year we took in over 100 boxes which is testament to the generosity of the people of this peninsula. Volunteers from the Boxes of Hope charity picked up the boxes on Friday 14th November and on Tuesday 19th November they left Britain bound for the children who may receive nothing more this Christmas. Five years on and the latest ball, which was held on Saturday 8th November, raised in the region of £10,000. The 154 guests dined in the sumptuous surroundings of The Netherwood Hotel and were entertained in true military style by cadets from the Lancashire Air Cadet Force. An auction was held with some truly amazing prizes which are secured by the hardworking committee who give countless hours to make this event so successful. Master of Ceremony, Alastair Rae, once again led the live auction with items including: two VIP tickets to see

The majority of the profits go to local schools to fund outdoor activities. All the primary schools in the area benefit from the charity. How active parents are in getting involved in supporting fundraising activities does help to contribute to their share of available funds for their school. Profits from 2013 ball were distributed this year as follows: Tiger Kloof, Windermere school project £500, Allithwaite school £2596, Grange school £3404, Not Forgotten Association £1000, Guerka Welfare Trust £1000, RAF Benevolent Fund £2000.

End of an era An active, ‘Friends Group’ has disbanded after eight years of diligently caring for a beautiful park in Grange-over-Sands. Park Road Gardens is a delightful, quiet park with an elegant grade 2 listed Edwardian bandstand as its centrepiece.

In 2006 a Friends Group was formed to help fulfil the criteria for South Lakeland District Council to enter the Park for the prestigious Green Flag Award. After winning seven Green Flags and two Green Heritage Awards (only eight were awarded in the whole of the north-west) the time has come for the Friends to disband. In 2005/06 the area around the bandstand was completely re-designed and replanted by students of Newton

ADVERTORIAL

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP

May I start by thanking all the readers for the positive feedback we receive in respect of the articles we write, it is much appreciated. It is that time of year again when I find myself wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Whilst enjoying a relaxing festive period it is a good opportunity to look back over the previous twelve months and reflect on what has happened to ones finances in light of the ever changing economy. At IIA, we also review the year that has past. A large proportion of new clients we have had the pleasure to work with during 2014 are those with existing investments, pensions, ISAs etc that now require professional ongoing management. Financial markets and legislation rarely remain the same for long periods, but constantly move and evolve. In the same way, your investments will not remain static – everyday volatility will not only affect your portfolio’s overall value, it will also alter the balance of assets within it; what you originally invested in may look quite different today as companies change focus and investment funds re-align their strategies. Working out the ideal structure of your investments on ‘day one’ isn’t enough – instead, it is vital to monitor your portfolio to make sure it continues to meet your long-term needs. Of course, your life is unlikely to stand still either.

As the years go by, your circumstances – and your long-term goals – are likely to evolve, depending on your family and your income situations, your changing tolerance for risk and your need for capital growth, income or a mixture of the two. And if your circumstances have altered, your portfolio is likely to need a tweak to ensure it fulfils your ongoing requirements. It is vitally important to review your portfolio regularly to ensure your investments remain suitable and relevant to you and that they are generally performing as you would expect. A regular check and ‘maintenance’ as and when required will help to keep your portfolio in good shape; working with a Financial Planner will ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Rigg Agricultural College as the planting was preventing audiences from viewing the many bands which give performances on summer Sundays. At this time the Friends agreed to regularly maintain this area as well as the Sensory Garden which is to be found on the lower level of the Park. With the enthusiasm and ideas of the Friends the Park has changed considerably over the years. The support of Neighbourhood Forum and the County Council enabled us to replace an old tree seat and a new decorative archway into the Sensory Garden as well as providing new stone raised beds in the Sensory Garden. All of these were made by local craftsmen. Support from local groups and societies has enable us to carry out extensive re-planting schemes whilst the Grange Natural History Group provided the wild-life information board on the storeroom door and a Tree Walk Leaflet. The 80th Anniversary of the Park in 2009 was celebrated by a week of miscellaneous events in the Park and town involving many other organisations including Youth Theatre, Opera and Drama, Slide show of photos of Old Grange, Churches Together and culminating with the original band (not the players!) Besses ‘o th’ Barn - from Bury, giving a wonderful performance in the bandstand which included several pieces which were played at the opening in 1929.

Over three and a half thousand people supported these events making it a memorable occasion. We were also chosen to host BBC Radio 4 Gardeners Question Time in Grange’s Victoria Hall

which was a sell out occasion. The retiring committee consists of Sue Fleetwood – Chair, Mary Ann Best – Secretary, Geraldine Gordon – Treasurer, Margaret Robinson – Publicity, and Judith Shapland – Fundraising; who have been ably assisted by Brian Lewis, Brian and Kathy Potter, Ron Shapland and Alan Roberts. The areas in the Park which the Friends maintained have now been handed back to South Lakeland District Council and its Contractors, Continental Landscapes.

Going the extra mile for St Mary’s Hospice The volunteers for the Leven Valley Fundraising Support Group for St Marys Hospice work incredibly hard throughout the year doing a mind boggling array of different events, solely to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston. Under the fantastic leadership of Dot Crabtree, Chair of the group, they

are always coming up with new ways to raise funds. This year, fundraising has exceeded everyone’s expectations and they have raised enough money to buy the Hospice a much needed, brand new car. Dot and the group are always quick to applaud: “the generosity of local people in our and surrounding areas who

Charity & Co raise staggering amount

Charity & Co have managed to raise a massive £9,300 in just one year. The total, raised between September 2013 and September 2014, is a fantastic achievement for the hard working team. The group plan to give Grange and District First Responders, St Mary’s Hospice, Westmorland and South

continuously support us by buying tickets to our events etc, and also the generosity of the local businesses who give us raffle prizes etc, and of course to Guy Perry Ltd, Barrow in Furness, who supplied the car at a much discounted price.”

Another portion of the money, £500, will go to local lad Lyndon Howson, who is currently trying to raise funds so he can visit Bolivia to carry out conservation work there along with Newton Rigg College. Charity & Co are currently looking into other causes who they feel they can help. If you belong to a group or know of anyone who would benefit,

please contact the Secretary, Diane Burrow on 015395 33740. A spokesperson for the group told Grange Now, “We couldn’t do this without the fantastic support we receive at the band concerts and through the quiz sheets. We would also like to take this chance to thank Veronica for setting the quiz sheets and Jean for her endless supply of cup cakes! We are very grateful for the continuing support we receive.” use the facilities. An update from MIND….

When our crisis campaign started, we had no idea what to expect. While we had absolute confidence in the value of South Lakeland Mind for the community, we also knew that the situation was extremely difficult – even if we set out the dangerous financial position the charity found itself in, there was no easy solution to prevent closure.

G’day

That dangerous financial position – still, sadly, a crisis – remains.

This time to South Bank, Brisbane. Christine Craig from Graythwaite Court is pictured here with her grandson Alex. Christine is visiting family in Australia.

‘The response from this community has been both incredible and truly humbling. Getting this far, so quickly, is beyond what we dared to hope. My heartfelt thanks go out to all those who have supported us so far in whatever way they have been able – this collective effort will change lives.’

Nevertheless, the response from the public and organisations in a position to help has been truly amazing, and confidence is building that the charity can survive.

‘So many people have experience of mental illness, whether themselves or among family and friends, and they have told us the difference South Lakeland Mind has made for them. And many other people have stepped up, recognising what the charity does here in South Lakes, and can continue to do in 2015’

Public donations have ranged from a few pounds to £5000, and these, together with offers of help and comments about the impact the charity makes, show just how much people care. These donations have now reached £14,590. Jonathan Ingram, chief officer, said:

Spooky goings on at the motor museum Lakeland Motor Museum raised £500 for St Mary’s Hospice through its Halloween activities - a Raffle for the adults and various Children’s activities including a Spooky quiz, Lucky dip and Bat the Rat.

A couple of year’s ago Grange resident, Larry Braysher’s debut book, ‘Boxing by the Sea’ was published.

Larry has now written a new book entitled ‘Boxers from the Bay’ which takes the story much further with the tale of professional boxing in the Bay area itself, from its early days through to the current century. Larry told Grange Now, “Every facet of local professional boxing is included in this journey through the decades, with many anecdotes and amusing stories to sustain the reader’s interest. Such as the two boxers who fought for the favours of

a lady, and the boxer who literally tied himself up in knots in the ropes and was counted out.” He then continued, “There’s the story of the local boxer who had a ring encounter with a boxing kangaroo, and another who was decorated for bravery in World War 2 by the King at Buckingham Palace. Also of local interest in the book, is the story of Grange over Sands foremost professional boxer, Alex Newton, who was a formidable exponent of the ‘noble art’ despite losing the fingers of his right hand in a childhood accident. Newton went on to top the bill at boxing shows held at Grange’s Victoria Hall.”

The organisers paid tribute to the assistance of Stuart Wallace, a Parkrun ambassador from Barrow, who was their mentor during the planning stages. A big group from Barrow – which has its own successful Parkrun – came over for the first Fell Foot event.

Runners from all over the country descended on Fell Foot at Newby Bridge for Windermere’s first Parkrun on 19 October. This attracted an unprecedented 247 participants, since then more than 180 have attended each weekly run.

I would also like to thank my jump partner Pete Connor and to Ian Chick who filmed the whole experience. They both were professional and looked after me superbly on the day.”

Have your say on budget cuts Cumbria County Council is faced with the challenge of finding £83 million of savings over the course of the next 3 years and this includes estimated savings of £30.6 million within 2015/16. In order to achieve these savings a series of proposals have been developed and the residents of Cumbria are being asked for their views. In addition, residents will be asked about how to find new ways of working and also their views on creating a ‘unitary’ council, or ‘unitary’ councils. Further information regarding these proposals can be found by visiting the website below. In South Lakeland local drop-in events will be held as follows: Grange Library, on Friday 5th December 2pm – 4pm and if you can’t make that one you can go to

Kendal Library, Stricklandgate on Wednesday 19th November 10am – 12noon. There are other drop in events around the County and you will find details of these on the website. Alternatively, if you are not able to attend one of the drop-in events, full details on how you can tell us what you think of the budget proposals can also be found at http://www. cumbria.gov.uk/budgetconsultation. All views need to be received no later than the 20th January, 2015. This is your chance to have your say.

What a palaver In an amazing u-turn, plans for on street parking charges have, incredibly, been dropped. During a lengthy, and doubtless expensive, consultation process about the proposed new charges it has emerged that there is a question mark over the legality of enforcing the charges.

The decision of whether or not to proceed was delegated to Jim Savege, Corporate Director for Environment and Community Services. Mr Savege has been reported as saying: “It is clear that there are strong concerns about enforcement in both on-street parking and residents’ permits. We agree. That’s why we’re bringing this back in house. The consultation also brought out concerns about the legality of Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders for the introduction of on-street parking charges.”

Following a meeting between Mr Savege and the Leader of the Council, Stewart Young, it was decided not to proceed with on street parking charges at this time, however, senior councillors were quick to point out that the decision to scrap the charges was Mr Savege’s. In another twist, it was announced on 19th November that Mr Savege is to leave his position as Corporate Director for a promotion. He is to become chief executive of Aberdeenshire Council.

X6 service still running on Saturday night

I think we all can be forgiven for being confused as to which buses have been cut, which services have been kept, and which have two buses running at the same time! The library has the up to date schedule for anyone who would like a copy. A resident of Grange has asked us to point out that the 23:15 X6 service from Kendal to Grange is still running on a Saturday night. She told Grange Now, “This bus used to be really busy but

there were only one or two of us on it the last time I used the service. I think people don’t realise that this bus is still running, and if people don’t use it the bus company will definitely drop it from the schedule”.

Design New application lodged for Trickett’s Field Developers Envidia Homes have now lodged a new application for their proposed development at Trickett’s Field. Reports suggest that there is little difference between this and the previous application which was submitted earlier this year. Chairman of Grange Town Council Tom Harvey said “I’m staggered that the developers have ignored virtually all the concerns put forward by both the local community and planners with this revised application and just submitted a tweaked version of the original one. Its smacks of arrogance that they think they can ride roughshod over us and the sooner this application is heard by the planning committee and rejected, the better.” Tom added “I will be urging planning officers and the Chairman of the committee to stand firm in making sure planning procedure is followed robustly to prevent development by the back door on technicalities.” Grange Now have received conflicting reports on whether objections to the original application are carried forward. Grange Now has been informed that previous objections may not be carried over to the new application. The advice given by the SLDC planning committee as told to Grange Now is, “To ensure your objections are correctly logged against the new application it is advised you re-submit them to the new application (SL/2014/1036) however comments/objections are usually incorporated from the previous application into the current application once it is presented to Committee.” In the course of our investigations Grange Now has been trying to understand how a row of trees, such as the row of lime trees seen along the road above Trickett’s Field, can be removed even though they are the subject of Tree Preservation Orders. If a TPO offers no protection then it must be asked, what is the point of the TPO? Councillor Joanna Greenway provided the following helpful explanation. “TPOs are not binding in all circumstances. If a developer can

Community Led Plan

The CLP has now been published. It was presented to Grange Town Council Mayor Tricia Thomas, Andrew Gardiner for SLDC and Bill Wearing for Cumbria County Council on Monday 10th November by Malcolm Kimber, chair of the CLP. By now a leaflet will have dropped through your letterbox. The full report is available in the Victoria Hall, TIC and the Library. Now we are looking for people to take the report forward. If you are interested in getting involved please write to the CLP team, care of the Victoria Hall, preferably by the end of January 2015.

prove that the only way to provide safe access to new houses is to remove one or more trees, SLDC Planning Officers can decide that safety is more important than keeping the tree(s), depending on their quality and contribution to the landscape. Envidia want two access roads into the Trickett’s Field development - one main entry and another for four houses fronting the main road. TheyPlanning would be Application permitted to remove the lime trees that block sight Dwellings lines for drivers entering for and64 leaving by those roads because safety hason to land be theat first priority. Their first application did not Kents Bank Road remove all the lime trees. Grange Sands Envidia have now chosen to over put forward a design that removes all the lime v3 October 2014 trees on ‘their’ stretch and to replace them with a row of nine London Plane trees situated in the front gardens of the new houses along the main road. It isn’t necessary to do that for safety, but as the reason for the TPO was that

OUR PLAN OUR FUTURE YOUR CHANCE TO SHAPE IT Extra Funding for Grange-over-Sands! What could we do with that?

ü play space for local families ü safer cleaner pavements ü traffic and parking improvements

ü help for our elderly ü support for local businesses ü more recreation facilities

Extra funding is ours by right, but Grange Town Council can’t claim it all without your help. It comes from a levy on new-build developments, called the Community Infrastructure Levy. We can claim 25% of it for Grange if we build on the results from the Community Led Plan, which you will receive through your letterbox this November, and create a Neighbourhood Plan. If all the houses allocated to Grange are built over the next decade or so, we could be claiming an estimated £130,000 - £210,000. More houses are being built. The town will get bigger. It is so important that you HAVE YOUR SAY NOW and ensure we can contribute to developing the supporting infrastructure that is needed. What’s different about the Neighbourhood Plan is that once it is written, it will be a legally binding document and will have to be used when planning decisions are made. Town and Parish Councils all over the country are creating Neighbourhood Plans. It’s the right time now to create our Neighbourhood Plan, and we will be asking all our residents to vote on it. Why does Grange Town Council need help? The Council has obtained a grant to buy in some professional help and councillors are fully involved. We need local people to pitch in as well, to help make sure everything happens on time and to plan. If you would like to get involved, or would just like some more information, please contact Viv or Claire on 015395 32375 or email: contactus@grangeoversands.net

School Reports

Grange Primary School

Flookburgh School Sadly, we had to say ‘goodbye’ to Mrs. Procter who has gone to support another local school. She was a star at our school and we will all greatly miss her. Nursery has been on an adventurous trip to Grizedale Forest and all really enjoyed it. They have been exploring the school grounds and looking for the signs of Autumn. Reception and Y1 children are now taught by Miss Cannon as usual and Mr. Brooksbank, who is back to school full time and happily on the mend. Y2, Y3 and Y4’s have been to Keswick Museum and Castlerigg Stone Circle. They looked at primeval objects found by local archeologists at the museum and tried to count the stones in the Castlerigg Stone Circle.

The children have started thinking about the Magna Carta Project this term. The project was launched at a whole school assembly led by the Wordsworth Trust focusing on the background to the Magna Carta and the theme of fairness and justice. Workshops followed this assembly on the 24th October, with The Trust working with all children between the ages of 6 and 11. The themes link well with the school’s work on The UN Rights of the Child and the Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning –(SEAL) themes being followed. This term the focus is: ‘Getting on and Falling out’, Remembrance and PEACE and Forgiveness. The whole school will be involved in the project over the year, with children creating poems and other works. On 10th November the school were involved with planting a mixed hedge along the boundary fence as part of an event to mark the centenary of WW1 and the 2020 Vision Project. Headteacher, Phillipa Summers said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to think about their impact on the environment, and it links well with the recent 2020 Vision project in Grange. It will help to mark the sacrifice made by local people during WW1 as the Woodland Trust are developing centenary woodlands this year. The community were part of this project, with James Walmsley and Liam Crowe from Cartmel Priory Secondary School’s ASDAN group, Tony Saunders the manager from Brown Robin Reserve, parents and local people who helped our children to plant the saplings.

As part as the New National Curriculum, Y5 and Y6 are learning about the coding of computers and computer programmes.

This has been brought in to help children keep up with the constantly advancing technologies. It also gives children a superb opportunity to create and use their own games and apps. One programme we have been using in school, made by MIT ( Massachusetts Institute of Technology), is Scratch, which is a very open-ended programming tool that can be used to produce all sorts of animation and apps. We have also had a very meaningful Remembrance Service, which took place at our school this time. Children were reciting poetry and sung in honour of those who ‘give up their today for our tomorrow’.

Allithwaite Primary School

As we head towards the Christmas holidays, we can look back at the autumn term with pride. The beginning of the school year saw: the introduction of a new uniform, a nursery class, after- school club, toddler group, an improved classroom and a new website. All are running successfully, due to the hard work and determination of staff, enthusiastic children, and parents willing to embrace change. As always, our children have been a credit to the school and have; achieved success at the Cross Country Competition, learnt about computer programming and robotics, produced beautiful artwork relating to the Rainbow Fish, been on a sensory walk, written messages to fairies and studied the Second World War. We have even got two Blue Peter Badge winners in our midst. Probably the most memorable event this term has involved our juniors participating in a project organised by The Grange History Society, which has seen them

studying the lives of eleven fallen war heroes from Allithwaite. The conclusion to the project was a touching remembrance service in the church with poems read out by our boys.

As we go to press there is still the Allithwaite PTA Christmas Fair, the Christmas production and Christmas parties to look forward to. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at Allithwaite C of E School. Visit our new website www.allithwaite. cumbria.sch.uk or phone 015395 32144 to arrange a visit.

Lindale Primary School and Nursery Both school and pre-school have had some fun and busy weeks over the past month. There always seems to be something exciting going on, both indoors and outside!

Sail away a first for some

We have had visits to South Lakes and Eden Primary Science fair, and our older children also visited the Kendal archives at County offices to find out about life in the local area during WW1. We remembered those in our village who lost their lives; reflecting on the sacrifice of the whole community as we held an act of remembrance for the whole school at the Lindale war memorial. Years 2 to 6 are all visiting Coniston waterpark over the next few days for outdoor adventurous activities. The photo shows years 5 and 6 sailing today- a first time for many of them!

Our reception and nursery children enjoyed a Forest Fun afternoon, inviting younger children in the area to join them. We will be following this up with a Santa’s workshop morning on 5th December at 9.30am for any toddlers and their parents or carers. Please just call to let us know you’re coming- 015395 33480.

Between 5-9 November, a group of GCSE History students travelled to Ypres in Belgium to visit WW1 sites.

On the second day, we travelled to Beaumont Hamel, a memorial site for the Newfoundland regiment who took part in the Battle of the Somme. We then went to see the amazing Wellington Quarries in Arras and travelled to Vimy Ridge, on which stands the beautiful monument by Walter Allward. On the third day, we visited Tyne Cot cemetery which

contains the names of 34,000 soldiers who are listed as missing. We also visited Essex Farm cemetery where we saw the grave of Valentine Strudwick, a 15 year old boy who died in No Man’s Land in 1916. That evening, we attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and laid a wreath to remember our local fallen soldiers. Overall, we think it was a once in a lifetime experience. We would like to thank all the staff involved in making the trip run so smoothly.

We also ran a poetry competition, the winning entry being Emily, Year 8:‘A soldier, a saviour. As the poppy blooms, dyed red with blood from your wounds. But here you stay, standing tall. A soldier, a saviour, to us all.’

The first Junior PCSOs finish their tour of duty! The Scheme has now concluded following a final reward event on Lake Windermere and a presentation at the Grange Hotel. The purpose of the Scheme was to encourage good citizenship and promote pride in the community in the youth on the cusp of influential secondary school life and experiences. By creating a fun but educational programme of events, it was our intention to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of antisocial behaviour to the Juniors which would help them make the right decisions in the coming years.

Enjoy a secure, comfortable retirement in beautiful surroundings at an affordable cost. Plumtree Hall provides Sheltered Retirement Accommodation for up to 10 residents in a Grade II listed Georgian mansion.

With the help of Network Rail and BTP, we showed them the consequences of playing on or near the railway network. A similarly important input from Bay Search & Rescue taught us all the implications of ignoring safety warnings. A coffee morning at a local care home for the elderly was intended to encourage a respect for

Facilities available at Plumtree: • Spacious lounge/conservatory • Single or double occupancy • Intercom door entry call system • Delicious home cooked food • Passenger lift • Beautiful gardens • Care plans accepted Visitors welcome. Guest room/ Short stay/Respite/ B & B accommodation may also be available.

our elders. Dropping litter is something we have all done but the presence of litter (no matter how big or small) is a blight on our beautiful scenery and we asked our Juniors to help SLDC in a local clear up. Finally, helping people in our community was encouraged through our valuable time spent with the Community First Responders and North West Ambulance together with our public Crime Prevention surgery.

I hope we have inspired a few of the Juniors to consider a career with the partner agencies we have worked with or as adult PCSOs in the future! It has been a successful Scheme but our time was limited and I feel strongly that the influence should continue on a more regular basis along with the schools and youth clubs. PCSO Emma Forrester

Rewarding work at the reserve

Although Brown Robin is right on the edge of town, it always surprises me the diversity of this little reserve. It is a combination of high forest, coppice, Limestone pavement and Calcareous grassland, providing habitat for a range of wildlife. cataloguing species and rarely misses a work party, as well as managing her own reserve, Humphrey Head. Martin Chadwick, is out most days in winter monitoring winter thrushes as well as Swifts in summer and is also a regular at work parties. It is not all hard graft, we do have a chat and a giggle sometimes, especially when sat round the campfire having lunch.

A well earned breather

and monitoring work. All this work is undertaken by volunteers, who give up their free time in all weathers to help with these important tasks. We have regular volunteers as well as occasional ones, we even have some travelling long distances to help out. They all have their own reasons for coming along, whether it is just to get in the countryside for a day, or to learn new skills and meet like minded people.

The grassland provides nectar for insects such as Bees and the High Brown fritillary, and the woodlands provide habitat for birds, insects and bats. The coppicing is a constant regenerating habitat, allowing species to move around and start new life. The grasslands are managed by cattle in summer. However, sometimes in winter we have to remove scrub and clear footpaths for access. The coppice work is a regular annual task. Other tasks undertaken include; Dry-stone walling, repairing gates, fences

Two long term volunteers in particular spring to mind; Wendy Nelson is very knowledgeable and goes unnoticed all over Grange

I would like to highlight the importance of volunteers and would like to give a big thank you to all who help with the conservation work at Brown Robin. Without their help and commitment, the reserve would not be as accessible or as diverse as it is. If you would like to come along to a work party and help out for a day or learn more information about volunteering, please visit; www.cumbriawildlifetrust. org.uk or simply turn up at our next work party. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and New Year, Hon Res Manager, Tony.

Westmorland Orchestra 70th anniversary

The Westmorland County Music Committee first met with orchestra’s from Kendal and Windermere in July 1945. They met to discuss forming a county-wide orchestra, but the new orchestra’s first concert did not take place until the Autumn of 1946, so they will be marking their anniversary twice. Their next concert takes place on Saturday 6th December at 7.30pm, Westmorland Hall, Lakes Leisure Centre, Kendal. You will be treated to: In Nature’s Realm by Dvořák, Oboe Concert in C K314 by Mozart with Rachel Clegg on Oboe and finally Symphony No 10, Shostakovich. Tickets are available from orchestra members, The Brewery Arts Centre Kendal Box Office (01539 725133) or on the door. Tickets are available from 6th November.

Christmas concert with Voce

The male quartet, winners of ‘Lakes Got Talent’ in 2013, have a big local following and demand for tickets is expected to be high, for what promises to be a concert not to be missed. Tickets are priced at £8.50 (£7.50 concessions) and can be obtained from Len Gee (015395 33881) or Anne Clough (015395 32048) with refreshments available on the night. Morecambe Bay Panoramas

Oh no it isn’t….oh yes it is….

It must be panto time again. Grange and District Amateur Operatic Society present their multi-talented youth section in, Sleeping Beauty, an extremely funny, romantic, and a little bit scary story of the princess who pricks her finger whilst using a spinning wheel and, instead of dying, she sleeps for 100 years, along with the whole ‘court’. She is finally awakened by a handsome prince, but not until after he has cut down the dense forest that has grown around the castle of the prince, during her prolonged sleep. The 12 year old princess is played by Katie Gregory, and when she awakens four years later at the age of 16, Lucia Harrington takes over the role. The Prince will be played by Katie Richardson, with the role of Dame Dottie Dettol being taken on by Murray Adams, Muddles, the funny guy, is a role undertaken by

Food & Drink Gourmet Grange

With the Festive season in full swing, many people’s thoughts will have turned to festive eating, and of course ‘That most important meal of the Year’. A turkey will be the centrepiece of many a dining table come Christmas Day, with around 10 million turkeys consumed each Christmas in Britain. But why the turkey became so popular is a bit of mystery… They were thought to have been introduced to the Christmas dinner table by King Henry VIII in the 16th Century. According to a recent survey, 87% of Brits thought that ‘Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a Turkey’, and whilst our Free Range Bronze turkeys are very special indeed, don’t forget there are plenty of other delicious options available! Our Free Range, flavoursome Geese make for a traditional yet crowdpleasing choice, plus the tasty fat makes wonderful crispy roast potatoes! Another great alternative to turkey are our Free Range Cockerels, slow grown for fantastic flavour! If you are still undecided, maybe this Christmas is time

for a multi-bird roast; combining rich and flavoursome game meat with a juicier Duckling or Turkey, you will get the best of both worlds. We’ve got all the extra’s covered too… from Festive Joints to chef-made forcemeats, Pigs in Blankets and Cranberry Sauce. And of course… there’s the legendary pies. What could be finer on Christmas Eve than a Festive Game Pie, simply enjoyed with some pickled red cabbage and a glass or two of red wine? ADVERTORIAL

Grange Accountancy Practice Celebrates 10 Years in Business I set up the company in November 2004 on The Main Street in Grange over Sands, at the time I was working with two other accountants who I worked with for a period of two years, and two consultants, who are both still working with me today. I had 8 years’ experience of working in two accountancy practices in Kendal, which had always been ‘departmental’, I wanted to offer accountancy services to the public but with a very strong emphasis on business support services, so that we weren’t just another firm of accountants offering the same services at the clients year end, we were another firm of accountants offering those services and more.

To me this meant offerings of full bookkeeping and support services and being able to work with clients on every aspect of their business from start to finish. When I set up in business 10 years ago there weren’t very many accountancy practices offering full bookkeeping services, it was either a bookkeeping business or an add on to accountancy services. The practices that did offer this didn’t seem to have any kind of fee structure. I wanted to design a menu/

packaged based service open to all clients so they knew what they were paying at the beginning, but not dividing an annual accounts fee into monthly payments; I wanted to include time with the accountant to encourage regular and ongoing meetings.

I had heard so many times over the years from clients that they didn’t contact their accountant because they would be presented with a large bill and this was one of the first things I wanted to change, internal fee structure and client relationships. I started to build products and packages which would work for both the company and the clients and advertised BFMS as a Financial Support Service, BFMS stands for Business Financial Management Services. At the beginning a lot of people thought we only offered bookkeeping and some were confused by the name, but I did this on purpose and achieved clients who immediately benefited from these services.

I have always strongly encouraged clients to have their accounts prepared on a monthly or quarterly basis, and I still can’t emphasise enough the importance of this, if for nothing else, just the tax planning alone is a good enough reason to be on top of your accounts.

I am delighted to be celebrating 10 years in business in Grange and I am looking forward to many more years to follow. I would like to say a big thank you to my fantastic team of staff Alison, Brenda and Jordan and my excellent consultants Symon and Ian who have supported me through the 10 years. County Matters

The County Council Budget Consultation is taking place until the 20th January 2015. I would ask everyone to respond to these proposals, especially the item on page 19 on the document which relates to the number of Councils in Cumbria This item states that major savings can be made if we had either one or two Councils across the County. The maximum savings could amount to £27 million. I have long pressed for a Unitary Council for Cumbria and hopefully with your support can now make this happen over the next few years The County Council are holding consultation meetings on the Budget all over the County and in Grange it will be held at the Library on Friday 5th December between 2 and 4pm. You can fill in the consultation on-line at www.cumbria.gov.uk/ budget consultation and paper copies at Grange Library.

If you feel strong enough about Unitary Government in Cumbria you can besides responding to the County Council lobby central Government by e-mailing Eric Pickles Cabinet Minister for Local Government at eric. pickles@communites.gsi.gov.uk As we approach the Christmas period I hope we can all be aware that sometimes some of our neighbours may need extra help over the Christmas holidays. With this in mind I would like to wish you all a very happy and enjoyable Christmas All the best from Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor for Grange Division

Mayor’s Report

The month began with the Charity Concert and I would like to thank everyone who supported this event in any way, by purchasing tickets, buying raffle tickets and programmes and also by very generous donations from those unable to attend. We made well over £500 for the two Charities, (Diabetes UK and Hospice at Home) and I think everyone who attended enjoyed the wide variety of music and the very talented performers aged from 6 to 60. Jackie and I next attended a very interesting and informative session at the Grange Hotel where we watched the presentation of certificates to those young people who took part in the Junior PCSO scheme. This excellent scheme gives youngsters from the area a real insight and experience into a variety of situations, some about keeping themselves safe in a variety of places and others about being a good and useful citizen. It being November we have attended Memorial ceremonies at both St Paul’s church Rusland and the annual laying of wreaths and service at St Paul’s church Grange followed by tea at the Victoria Hall. Both these occasions were very moving and thought provoking and it was an honour to represent the town at these ceremonies. On Tuesday there

was a further short ceremony at the War Memorial to mark Remembrance Day. We are now working hard finalising details for the forthcoming Charity Christmas Fair on November 29th. I hope to see you all there supporting the various charities and local organisations. This month the Council has had a number of planning applications to consider. The largest of these and certainly the most important for the town was the application for 64 homes to be built on Tricketts Field. This we very robustly opposed siting a wide variety of reasons including inadequate drainage arrangements, unsuitable design and the removal of the protected lime trees from the road. The next Councillor Surgery will be on Saturday December 6th from 10am until 12noon at the Victoria Hall. Do come along and discuss any topics which concern you and are relevant to Grange Town Council.

Tim’s Column

As you know I have been pushing hard to have the Furness Line electrified, following our success in getting the plans for electrification of the Windermere. Electrification will enable the line to carry modern trains that can link into the main network. As more and more of the network becomes electrified, the Government is currently investing over £500 million on the “Northern Hub” a key element of which will be the electrification of a great many lines across the North West, without electrification the service on the Furness line can only decline as fewer trains are able to run on it. What makes this even more urgent is the fact, highlighted in the recent Furness Line Study, that even without electrification the line is failing to do what is needed now, let alone when we have seen the new jobs that are planned in Ulverston and Barrow. Without a modern, reliable and efficient line all we will see is greater levels of traffic along the A590. Therefore I was really pleased to be able to get a debate on

Simon Rose PROPERTY

the Furness Line in Parliament the other day. This enabled John Woodcock MP (who worked with me in the debate) and I to put the case for investment in the line to the Minister responsible, Claire Perry MP. At the end of the debate the Minister said that there was a limit to what she could commit to, as there is the consultation running over the future rail franchises for the line currently, but she did give the impression to both John and I that she has listened closely to our arguments and was taking them on board. Clearly there is a long way to go in this campaign but I will keep pushing at every available opportunity as I think this is really important. The other major issue that I have been campaigning on during the past weeks has been the plans by various banks to close their branches in Milnthorpe, Ambleside and Sedbergh. Banks are really important to local businesses, I know that people are increasingly using the internet to do their banking but, particularly for businesses, being able to pay

Pamela Horobin

in cash and cheques easily is very very important. As far as I know there are no plans to close bank branches in Grange but clearly there is a pattern emerging here of bank branches in smaller towns coming under threat and we should be on the front foot. I have written to the Chief Executives asking them to come and meet me in the towns involved and explain their decisions to the local people. The local councillors and I have started a petition to get the banks to change their minds I would urge you to support it even if you never visit the banks in those towns. We all need to work together if we are to keep these local services. As ever you can contact me about these or any other issues by emailing me attim@ timfarron.co.uk or calling the office on 01539 723 403

Finally, can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. I hope you have a great time and wish you all the very best for 2014. As ever thanks for your support. Tim

Church News

Remembrance at Allithwaite

St Paul’s, Grange The Fell Church was full to capacity on the evening of the 7th November as people flocked to enjoy an evening of slides and conversation with Robin Webster. As always, Robin was so very entertaining and even produced an old magic lantern to show us original glass slides from the early twentieth century.

Remembrance Sunday ended a week of commemoration at St.Mary’s to mark the centenary of the beginning of World War 1. On Tuesday of that week, a presentation in words and pictures, told the stories of ‘The Allithwaite Boys’, the fallen who are named on the war memorial. The exhibition which accompanied this was open throughout the week. Visitors included relatives of the eleven from Allithwaite who died. We will remember them

On Remembrance Sunday, St.Mary’s Church at Allithwaite was full, as parishioners gathered to share in a service of remembrance, led by Rev. Rob Jackson.

‘The Allithwaite Boys’ was a project which brought the church, the school and the wider community together in an act of commemoration and remembrance. The presentation and exhibition documented stories of courage, commitment, suffering and sadness and brought particular poignancy to the words shared . . . . “At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.”

Grange Methodist Church On 28th October, ladies of the Women’s Network Group welcomed Edith Turner and Freda Addison, former local committee members for the Leeds Children’s Home, as speakers. It occupied various sites in north Lancashire, before permanently settling in Silverdale. Originally, children were selected from homes where the breadwinner did not earn more than 1/- per week. Now, they take 16 children at a time from February to August. Even today, there is a great need for the centre and courtesy of many generous firms and individuals the work goes on. During the winter months, the site can be rented and the income helps toward the upkeep and continuing renovations and upgrading.

The first meeting of ‘The 3 T’s. -- Thursday, Tea and Talk’ took place on Thursday, 6th November, this was originally the ‘Open fellowship’. Not only has it changed it’s name, but the time is now in the afternoon at 2.30 p.m. The hope is that during the winter months, people will be encouraged to venture out. Judith Poole spoke about her ‘Life in music’. She outlined her interest in music from being a young girl first learning to play the piano and later teaching music. She mentioned some young people she

encountered along the way, who were very talented and who she felt she had helped.

Women’s Network members at Grange Methodist Church welcomed Mr Don Austin to their meeting on Tuesday, 11th. He presented a programme of slides entitled ‘One Man’s Lakeland’. He was an enthusiastic climber and photographer in the past and had some super pictures of the Lakeland Fells taken over a long period. His commentary was interesting and humorous, reminding some in his audience of happy times roaming the highs and lows of our county.

United Reformed Church After a very successful Joint Service with our Methodist friends in October, at our church, this month we are looking forward to visiting them, which we will do on the 16th November. It is good to get together. The Churches Together Advent Carol Service at Boarbank on November 30th at 3pm is another occasion to anticipate with pleasure. Everyone is now preparing for Christmas, and this includes our Christmas Coffee morning on December 13th, 10am-12noon. We’ll be so pleased to see you there. You are very welcome to join us at the following Christmas services: Carol Service on Sunday 21st December at 10.30am which is a Joint Service with the Methodists in the United Reformed Church. Christmas Day Service at 10.30am on the 25th December. Happy Christmas to you all from Grange United Reformed Church.

The theme this year is Peace and Goodwill to All and the flower decorations and Christmas trees will stay in place throughout the Christmas period for visitors to enjoy. The wedding of Debbie and Steven made a change to the normal Friday afternoon. The congregation were in good voice and everyone went to the Netherwood in good spirits. ADVERTORIAL

Poole Townsend welcome two new faces

Dear Editor Regarding the Furness Line Train Services, the May 2014 timetable saw a further reduction of through train services between Barrow and Manchester coincident with the new hourly electric service between Manchester and Scotland. However, the Furness line still has the same number of services, but more of them terminate or start from Lancaster or Preston. In addition, it was possible to increase the number of daytime trains stopping at Dalton, Cark and Silverdale. The TransPennine and Northern Franchises are due to be renewed in February 2016 and, with this in mind, together with concern at the possibility of losing the remaining direct Manchester services, a meeting was called by John Woodcock at Barrow Town Hall under the Cumbria Better Connected banner on the 17th January this year at which over fifty local councillors and business leaders attended. It was resolved that £30,000 should be raised to fund an economic study of the Furness Line, which could be used as evidence to back up future campaigning for the line and add weight to the re-franchising consultation process.. The Furness Line Community Rail Partnership (FLCRP) undertook the organisation of the appeal and, with the generous assistance of both private and public organisations, a sum of £31,800 was collected.

Janet Bland & Julie Evans

Janet Bland and Julie Evans have recently joined the Grange-over-Sands branch of local solicitor, estate agent and financial services company, Poole Townsend.

dairy and sheep farmer, Janet is as comfortable in her wellies as her heels.

Although not from these parts, Julie moved up to Cumbria 13 years ago, and has quickly picked Janet has returned after a 10 year up her new role with the help gap during which time she was at of her colleagues. After a tendering process, The Railway Consultancy Ltd of Crystal Palace was appointed to undertake the economic study and the final report and a summary are now both available to read through the FLCRP’s web site on the Cumbria Better Connected page. The study concluded that the current service was not fit for purpose in that it missed serving some key markets, that there should be a minimum hourly stopping service, and that there was a good case for the reinstatement of the previous two-hourly service to and from Manchester. Tim Farron MP was successful in obtaining a 30 minutes debate on the Furness Line in Westminster Hall on 28th October at which both he and John Woodcock MP used the report to put the case for improved services on the line and future electrification. Tim Farron also urged the Rail Minister, Claire Perry, not to proceed with the Department for Transport’s (DfT) proposal to transfer all services to the new Northern franchise in 2016. John Woodcock highlighted the significant investment and increase in employment that will be taking place both in Furness and further up the west coast and asked that the next franchise holder be provided with the modern fast diesel units that are necessary for Furness Line trains to operate on the busy west coast main line on their way to and from Manchester. John Woodcock also raised the issue of the transfer south this next May of nine of TransPennine’s diesel trains, which threatens its ability to continue to serve all its existing locations. All three MPs paid tribute to the work of Peter Robinson of Grange, my predecessor as chairman of the FLCRP, who sadly passed away in August. Whilst the deadline for responses to the consultation for the re-franchising process passed on the 18th August, it is still not too late for businesses, organisations and individuals to write to the Secretary of State for Transport to put forward their views on future services on the Furness Line. The next stage of the re-franchising process is the issue of the Invitation to Tender (ITT), expected on 19th December, to the shortlisted bidders for the TransPennine Express and Northern franchises. These documents will confirm whether or not the DfT has

been persuaded by the arguments for TransPennine to continue to serve the Furness Line and it should state the minimum level of service that should be provided. These are uncertain times for the Furness Line, but the future of services on the line will become clearer in December when the ITT is issued, and further so in October next year when the winning bids are announced. The FLCRP will be contacting franchise bidders to ensure that they are made aware of the contents of the economic study and the requirements of users and businesses along the line. Dear Editor Currently the promenade is a place for residents, visitors and children to stroll along and exercise in relative safety. The Morecambe Bay Partnership (an unelected body) will be creating, signing and promoting a cycleway from near Lancaster to Barrow. Given the past history in the Lake District it may not be long before commercial and charity cycle events are held. It has been mooted that part of the route will be along the full length of the promenade. Currently the mixed use of the promenade works well but would a large increase in cyclists be acceptable given that a dedicated lane is not practical due to its width in certain places and would only increase speeds? Now is the time for residents and visitors to make their views known, either way, by telephoning Grange Town Council on 32375, by e-mail townclerk@grangeoversands. net or call in at the Information Centre at Victoria Hall. The Grange Town Council need to take the lead on this issue before any decision is taken by Morecambe Bay Partnership. We have KOGS, should we have KOPS (keep our prom special)? No doubt the pro cycling lobby may have a different view. Bill Woods

Dear Editor I am a local who uses the Jubilee playing field on a regular basis. I have taken it upon myself, when walking through, to try to keep the surrounding area of the football field free of litter. Only the other day I collected a full carrier bag of empty plastic bottles, empty biscuit cartons, empty crisp and sandwich bags. The youngsters who were playing on the field at the time, made it known to me that they were not responsible for the litter and that they were also appalled by the mess. I am totally amazed that people can leave behind so much litter, and not attending to it’s disposal. After all there are two waste bins which they have to pass to exit the fields. This gripe is not aimed at all the young people who use the facility. Some are only too happy to “pick up”. This is to the few who do not. Please leave the field clean and tidy for others to use don’t leave your mess for others to collect.

Dear Editor Re proposed development on land at Holme Lane/Jack Hill. If the residents of Jack Hill wish to object to the above proposal they are of course entitled to do so, but may I request that they do not attempt to push the entrance & any crossings from Jack Hill onto Holme Lane. Most Holme Lane residents are just as opposed to this development as anyone else. Yours Sincerely, K Walker

Dear Editor On 4th July this year my husband and I experienced one of the worst times in our life We had a house fire in the middle of the night . We would like to thank the firemen of the two appliances and the ambulance ladies that attended we would also like to thank our family and wonderful friends and neighbours who took us in and helped us in any way and the ongoing help we are getting from kind and generous people from the local area. Also a huge thank you to South Lakes Housing who helped us in so many ways to get us into our new home in a kind and sensitive manner. We have also lost our cat, Sooty, who is jet black with some grey wisps on her back. Please ring 32060. Thank you, Frances and Bob Hope

Dear Editor I am looking for information on an Archery club that once existed in the Grange area called North Lonsdale Archers. They formed in 1868 and died out in the 1950s. I wondered if any readers could help? Please contact me on 01539 740219, mobile: 07545865111 or email cjbenson@ btinternet.com. Many thanks, Craig Benson, Kendal.

Dear Editor As the person normally sending you information about the activities of Grange Drama I would like to thank you on behalf of the company for the publicity given by yourselves for our recent production of Educating Rita. It was particularly rewarding to chat to Furness College students in the audience who are studying the play & we have asked them to send us their “critique“ of the production. Currently we are preparing our entry to the St Pauls Church Christmas Tree Festival, a task we enjoy. In 2015 we will be producing Stage Whispers, our quarterly newssheet for members & in returning to that editorial chair I am reminded of the phrase “what goes around comes around“. I well remember doing the same job in the days of Grapevine during our years at the Cumbria Grange Hotel during the 1980’s. Maybe we should think about restoring the Nostalgia corner – the past productions go back over 60 years now & one is reminded of why we staged The Railway Children – the local Furness line was under threat of much reduced services in the early 1990’. So what’s new ! Margaret McDonagh

Dear Editor So the nights draw in and our local footpaths become a foul place to walk once more. I’m sure that I’m not the only resident to have to negotiate the footpaths in and around Grange to avoid dog excrement. Yet it seems to be a few dog owners who spoil our pavements due to their lack of effort in cleaning up their dogs business. Perhaps they justify this lazy act due to the early evening darkness; ‘out of sight and out of mind’ might be in their thoughts. However a thought should be made for the majority of residents, visitors and other dog owners to whom this effects. We should appeal to those who do not clean up after those dogs to consider the consequences and the times their dogs mess is cleaned off pushchair wheels, mobility scooters, walking sticks and shoes. Have they given any thought to the health effects, probably not? Well we ask and appeal to those few dog walkers to reconsider and buy a cheap torch and dog waste bags. Problem solved! Yours hopefully, Grange Resident, dog owner and parent. SLDC have given the following ways of contacting them to report dog fouling. You can ring them on 01539 733333 or email customer.services@southlakeland.gov.uk with the location of the fouling. Editor

LEGAL TALK Don’t put off making your Will

This month, Joanne tells us a familiar story (but with made up names) in the hope that it will prompt you to sort out your future planning. Earlier this year, I met Mary, a new client, after her husband, John, had died. They had no children and hadn’t made Wills. Everything seemed straightforward until Mary told me “Actually, John and I were never married. When we moved up here because of his job it just seemed easier to say that we were married and no one ever bothered. Does that make a difference?” I had to tell Mary that it made a huge difference. She had no automatic right to the estate, even the house which had been bought in John’s name. Everything would now go to his mum, Brenda. Mary and Brenda did not get on, as Brenda had never thought that Mary was good enough for her only son. If Brenda inherited the house, she could throw Mary out, unless Mary took her to court. I had to contact Brenda about the estate and was surprised a short time later to receive a letter from Brenda’s solicitor. Brenda had mentioned to her solicitor that John had fathered a child when he was very young but had had nothing to do with the child and never saw him. The child was now grown up and had moved to Australia. This child turned out to be the sole beneficiary of John’s estate, even though he had never known his father, at the expense of Mary who had lived with John as husband and wife for many years and nursed him through his final illness. Mary had never known that the child existed. For Mary to claim against the estate, she would have to take the matter to court which is expensive, takes a long time and in the circumstances was very upsetting. If John had made a Will, this problem would never have arisen. Although everyone likes to think that things will be straightforward when they are no longer here, life isn’t always like that. For a free appointment to discuss your will planning with Joanne, call (015395) 33316 for a free no obligation appointment. Visit www.pooletownsend.co.uk/makeawill

Society Round-up Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch On Tuesday 4th November, member Joanna Henson, taught the group Stick Weaving. She had come with sets of weaving sticks and plenty of lovely yarns for us to use. After spending some time getting to grips with the technique we progressed to introducing some shaping. As a result there were some really lovely corsages made. It proved to be a very intriguing technique and one which could become addictive. We all had a most enjoyable day and went home with plenty of ideas for taking it further. Many thanks to Joanna.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd of December when we will be having a social day and a Jacobs Join. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Joanna Henson on 01229-861800.

Grange over Sands NSPCC A musical afternoon on Saturday, 18th October, was held in the United Reformed Church. It was in aid of the NSPCC and a new charity called “Jigsaw”, which looks after the only children’s hospice in Cumbria and is based in Carlisle. The event was the idea of Victor Hindle, Sue Harrison and Sylvia Trohear, who also provided the entertainment. We are indebted to them for their delightful entertainment and helping to make it such a successful and enjoyable afternoon. We would also like to thank Dorothy Hindle, who acted as compere, and Margaret Tyson and Rita Laisby for providing the refreshments. Although it was free to everyone, £242 was given by donations and we do thank everyone who helped raise this amount. The sum of £242 will, of course, be split evenly between the two charities.

Grange Probus On 10th November, Ken Taylor gave an illustrated talk entitled Trail Ruts and Geysers. This was a description of a tour of America’s Mid-West. The trail ruts in his title were those left by the wagon trains of the 19th century which can still be seen today. The geysers referred to his visit to Yellowstone National Park. His tour covered several other National Parks with impressive illustrations of some magnificent scenery.

PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome. If you would like to learn more please contact: Chairman, Sean Jameson on 015395 32105 or Secretary, Ewen Cameron on 015395 32319.

Witherslack WI November was our Annual Meeting at which President Ann Walshaw, Secretary Pauline Hodgson and Treasurer Shirley Christie were all re-elected. The secretary reported that there are 23 members on the register and it had been a busy and successful year. Our finances are healthy. Joyce Goodwin thanked the officers for their sterling work and good humour throughout the year. Before this the ordinary business was carried out. The quiz team had enjoyed the evening and done reasonably well. The Lyth Valley Group Meeting was excellent. Too many members were missing for the 90th birthday photo, so it will be taken again before the December meeting. Please arrive for 7pm.

The annual dinner will be on January 20th at the home of Liz Clarke. A scrap book for the Centenary Year 2015 is to be compiled by Sarah Bradley and Pru Dodgson. Offers of help and ideas will be welcomed.

Grange Fell Golf Club – Ladies section As the end of our official season has more or less come and gone, we can look back over the year with some satisfaction. Presentation evening was on October 25th and was well attended with ‘Mutley’ providing added entertainment. Medal 9 was won by Hilary Austin and on lady Captain’s Day the winner was Jill Atkinson with Carol Campbell as runner up. The October Stableford winner was Ronnie Hall, while Ruth Waring and Ellie Woodburn won the Jean Turner Trophy and the Paul Perry Trophy respectively. The 2015 season

beckons and we look forward to it. Happy Christmas everyone.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI The November AGM was very well attended with members sitting down to a lunch prepared by the committee before the business got under way. Our membership has remained stable at 88 throughout the year and reports were given outlining the events and activities that we had taken part in during 2014. This month, apart from our normal craft and walking activities, the Lunch group is going to the Candle Factory at Lindal, and we have a trip to the Country Living Christmas Fair at Harrogate along with the Christmas Market. Unfortunately, owing to the length of the business and another appointment, Judith Anders was only able to hold a short question and answer session on foot health. However this was very informative and left members wanting to know more. We hope to arrange a further visit from Judith. The next meeting is on Tuesday December 2nd at 2.00pm at Allithwaite Community Centre when we will be celebrating Christmas. The first meeting of the New Year will be on 6th January when David Tomlinson from Warburtons will be speaking. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.

Grange Lecture Society The subject of textile conservation expert Jacqueline Hyman’s illustrated lecture on 28th October was her recent work on some excavated children’s garments from medieval Egypt, which had lain long forgotten in the Textiles Department at Leeds University. The six tunics and two silk caps represent a period (13th-15th Centuries A.D.) when people were buried in their finest clothing in readiness for meeting their god. After analysing the make-up and design of these rare artefacts, Jacqueline assessed their importance and showed how she set about conserving them. Ellie and Ian Vermeulen set off in 2004 to cycle from Kendal, in Ellie’s home county of Cumbria, to Cape Town, Ian’s home in South Africa. Their hugely enjoyable lecture on 11th November recounted the challenging 11-month journey, which took in 13 countries, and vividly depicted, most of all in the African part of their adventure, the fascinating peoples and places, not to mention unpleasant conditions and hardships, they encountered along the way. On 2nd December leading nature photographer John Beatty will deliver a lecture

entitled ‘Wild Vision – A Celebration of the Natural World’. The lecture begins at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Cartmel Art Society The October afternoon painting session was well attended by an enthusiastic group of members who chose a variety of media to draw and paint an Autumnal selection of fruits, berries and leaves. Our full day workshop in November was led by Caroline Metcalf- Gibson – “ Still Life of Gardening Equipment”. Members experimented with inks, crayon and watercolour with interesting outcomes.

We welcome all our members to the Christmas Party at the end of November when we shall be drawing and painting a selection of Christmassy objects and designing cards, accompanied by a glass of punch and a mince pie to help us in to the Christmas spirit!

Cartmel and District Flower Club On Tuesday December 9th we hold our Christmas Gala in the Victoria Hall at 7.30pm. The theme is “Christmas Greetings”. Our Demonstrator will be Susan Wareing. Susan is a very talented and popular local Demonstrator and we look forward to an exciting evening in the run up to Christmas. The tickets cost £7.50 and include refreshments. They can be obtained from Margaret Turner 38946 or on the door.

Grange WI We recently held our AGM and elected Joanne Harvey as our President and 6 other Committee members. Kelly Walsh spoke to us about making and updating our wills. Her talk turned out to be very interesting. Kelly explained how important it was to make a will or check your existing one, especially if you had not done so for a few years. She finished by explaining about ‘Power of Attorney’ and its relevance to everyone. Don’t forget to visit the WI Xmas Tree in St Paul’s Church in December. And on 11 December members will be having their festive meal at the ‘At Home’ Bistro. New members are welcome to join us for the meal and quiz. Please contact Joanne for more details – 015395 32932.

Grange Rotary The Youth Committee of the Club arranged a second Indoor Games Night and supper at Grange Golf Club recently. This was well attended and enjoyed by all members and Friends of Rotary. The club will be participating in the Mayor’s Open Day on 29th November and will be

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. happy to chat to anyone who has an interest in becoming a Rotarian. The club is also joining forces with the local Lion’s Club to assist Santa with his Sleigh on the 16th December. We urge people to watch out for him on that evening. The Club is currently exploring ways of encouraging new members to join us. Along with all service clubs, membership has become an issue. As one of our Past Presidents said, ‘there are few organisations where you can actually make a difference to lives in the community as well as in the wider world.’

And finally the first winners in the Fifty Club were Sue Wilkinson £10.00, Stuart Harling and Leslie Robinson £5.00. If you have an interest in joining this, please drop a line to Rotarian John Biddlestone via our meeting place, The Netherwood Hotel.

Grange over Sands Golf Club The annual coffee morning was held at the beginning of November which attracted the public and members as did the Craft Fair, thank you all for coming. The Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 21st December at lunchtime. There’s an impressive menu priced at £20pp. Book your table now. The booking sheet is on the bar. To secure your booking you’ll need to pay a deposit of £5pp (cash) or you could pay the full amount using your membership card, thus benefiting from a discount.

Newton & Field Broughton WI On October 18th several members of Newton and Field Broughton WI had the pleasure of seeing their fellow member, Joan Bentley, being presented with the British Empire Medal (BEM) by the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, which took place at the Annual Council Meeting in Kendal. Joan had been recommended for the award by her WI. On 23rd October, some members joined with others from the Cartmel valley at their meeting in Lower Holker Village Hall. There was a most enjoyable fashion show by Kitty Brown from Carnforth. The clothes were modelled by members. After the show there was a delicious tea provided by the hosts, Lower Holker WI. There was a considerable amount of business to be dealt with at the start of the monthly meeting on November 12th. Members were reminded that the date of the Christmas party has been changed to 17th December, and the start time is 7.15pm prompt. They were also reminded to take a plate, dish, glass and cutlery to the

meeting, and if they wanted, a gift for Santa’s sack. For those bringing a gift it should cost about £3 and be wrapped ready to go into the sack. Following this members were treated to a demonstration of flower arrangements for Christmas by member, Joan Bentley, who proudly wore her BEM for the occasion. As always the lovely arrangements were accompanied by her usual banter and informative tips on how to condition fresh flowers for such arrangements. They were then raffled.

Grange Ramblers On 1st October A group of Ramblers started a circular walk from Torver Park Ground to the Common then downhill to the shores of Coniston Water where the Cumbria Way was joined then to reach the Coniston Hall for lunch. Through Coniston the return route followed the disused railway line, now upgraded into an excellent path to Torver. Leader Richard Thorpe. 6th November, eleven ramblers met at Hampsfield House Hotel for coffee before setting off on a five mile social stroll. Coffee was served in front of blazing log fire and as things turned out that was the best part of the walk. Weather conditions rapidly deteriorated as the group began ascending Hampsfell, in spite of the wind and rain as walkers arrived at the Hospice. A unanimous decision was taken and the group returned by the quickest route to the start point. Leader Ann Thorpe. On Thursday 30th October seven members enjoyed a 6 mile walk in the misty lower Duddon valley. We started at Ulpha Bridge through Ulpha park to the ruined Frith Hall and towards Beckstones then Beckfoot before returning through Low park and Middle Park to start point. The autumn colours were delightful. Leader Hilary Parker.

Townswomen’s Guild John W. Parker’s talk on Turkey took us as far as Cappadocia in the East. Altogether 10 countries were included in their 3 months safari. His talk included Roman history, Greek history and Coptic sights. In December we will hold our Christmas party with Victor Hindle, Sylvia Trohear and Sue Harrison entertaining us. There will be no business and no money transaction as this is our last meeting!

The Townswomen’s Guild was founded in 1946. We know one previous member whose mother was a founder member. The old records and Minute books (that have not already been destroyed) will go to Kendal’s Records Office. We hope a Christmas party will help us to go out on a high and we hope friends and members will help it to go with a swing .

The party will be held at 2pm at St Charles meeting room on Thursday 11 December. The executive committee have found it increasingly hard to function as people are reluctant to take office. We have simply run out of steam but we look forward to seeing friends socially and especially for lunch! We wish everyone a Happy Christmas.

Lower Holker Village Hall Our Christmas Bingo will take place on Tuesday 2nd December at 7.30 pm . Come along and have a wonderful evening. This is always a very popular event. Light refreshments will be provided. The AGM will take place on Thursday 15th January 2015, starting at 7pm, (followed by the normal committee meeting). Please come along to the AGM. You may like what you see and wish to join the committee. We are now looking at events for next year.

Is there any event that you would like to see us put on? Any suggestions would be welcome. This is your hall. We are always on the lookout for fresh ideas/input. And finally, the best saved for last!!! Our ever popular Quiz Night will take place on Thursday 22nd January at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Come along and have a convivial evening amongst friends while keeping the “little grey cells” exercised. Up to four members in a team at £1.00 per team member. Bring your own drinks and glasses, and a hot supper will be served in the interval. There will also be a raffle.

Grange & District U3A The October general meeting was entertained by Stuart Eastwood, Curator of the Border Regiment Museum, Carlisle on the subject of ‘What did you eat in the trenches, Grandad?’, with

a focus on supplying and feeding the British army in WW1. An excellent and lively presentation. The November meeting has as a complete contrast, a presentation by Dr Rob David on ‘The ice houses in Cumbria.’ The December and January festive programme has been finalised. This comprises a film night and an afternoon performance at the Heron Theatre, Beetham, a memberled production at the general meeting in the Victoria Hall in December, and a murder mystery dinner in January. The speaker programme for 2015 has now been agreed and will be published shortly.

Our membership continues to grow. The latest number of members is 372, including 87 who are new to the U3A this year. The main life of the U3A is in the numerous interest groups which meet variously in private homes, in hired premises throughout the district and outdoors. Information about Grange and District U3A and its activities can be found at www.u3asites. org.uk/grange, in a ring binder in the resources room of the library and in leaflets at the Town Information Office.

Three Parks Group Since the last report the Group has completed the work at the southern end of the Ornamental Gardens, which included planting parts of the area with groups of tulips and daffodils. The cutting back of overgrown laurels is continuing in the shrubbery adjoining the toilet block and we are preparing an order for trees and shrubs to be planted next spring.

The Group provided a display in the Library during October showing recent project work and also pictures of the continuing damage to the sea wall of the Promenade caused by water, waves and frost. We are still awaiting the results of the fifth promenade inspection since 1993.

A leaflet for the Ornamental Gardens is at the design stage and we are looking for someone who is willing to create and maintain a web-site for us. The next General Meeting of the Group is scheduled for the 8th of January 2015 at 2pm in the Victoria Hall - all are welcome.

Bury the Banner! Who stole the banners caused quite a stir and a letter arrived to own up. It wasn’t a case of a theft after all but rather a well meant clear up. But we’re not right keen on nameless confessions and we won’t put that in our paper. So we’re writing this poem to let everyone know, There was no dastardly caper

That’s not to say, those banners aren’t missed, Or that some groups haven’t lost out. Just a polite request to forgive a confusion In this season of goodwill hereabout. So it only needs saying, to tidy things up that in future if you put up a sign. Connect a high voltage line with a 24 hour guard It’s time this dodgy poet resigned.

Happy Christmas.
