New hope for Grange Lido South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has announced that it has commissioned Commercial property experts Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) to undertake a study and provide a list of viable uses for the lido. It has long since been agreed that the lido will never reopen as pool and SLDC say they are keen to find a new use for the iconic building.
LSH will investigate options which are compatible with a Grade 2 listed building. Simon Turner, director of Planning and Consultancy at LSH, said of the study: “The council’s earlier consultations showed that 91% of respondents supported the principle of restoration and development of the lido site and more than three quarters of those asked considered the lido to be an important part of the town’s heritage. “This level of enthusiasm for a site is a great basis for a potential regeneration and we are looking forward to working with the

Ruth Leahy, Project Officer for Economic Development at SLDC, told Grange Now: “This options appraisal does not seek to replicate work already undertaken but instead will seek to find a definitive way forward on the Grade 2 Listed Building so it can be accessed and used by the residents and visitors of Grangeover-Sands”. The first step in the consultation process will a visit to the Lido with key stakeholders to provide an opportunity for those involved to suggest ideas and options for consideration. Crew Manager, John Sayle, of Barrow Fire station and Grange Retained Fire Station recently received his Fire Long Service and Good Conduct medal and framed certificate from Station Manager Roger Exley. The medal is only awarded after 20 years’ service, with good conduct throughout. John joined the retained Fire Service at Grange Station in May 1995 and progressed to join the full time regulars at Barrow in May 2005.
He has thoroughly enjoyed all his service, which has seen him attend a wide variety of incidents. He hopes to

I was not expecting to be writing about Donald Trump’s triumph in the US Presidential race. Then again these are strange times and we are told anything can happen in America. Markets have responded, perhaps surprisingly, by gaining value which may reflect that when the dust has settled policies will be implemented with some sectors (such as infrastructure) gaining and others losing. Further, were many of the outrageous statements made purely aimed at winning votes and if not then how hard will it be to implement his views? Time will tell. Closer to home the impact of even lower interest rates for even longer is beginning to bite for savers. Those of us who have had a fixed rate savings accounts mature recently will have seen the re-investment rates being very poor which reflects the expectation of rates staying at ultralow levels for longer.
One important date is the 23rd November which is Chancellor Hammond’s first Autumn Statement. The content will obviously be interesting but so too will the tone since this will hopefully give us an insight as to government’s thoughts and plans post Brexit. Spare a thought for the homeless at Christmas Grange mum of two, Anne Davison, called into Grange Now to share her ideas for helping the homeless at Christmas. She told us: “Christmas is about giving, and it’s for that reason that I am hoping to collect as many donations of woollen scarves, gloves, hats and Christmas goodies, as I can, in order to hand them out to the homeless in Manchester.”

Mayor’s Report
On November 10th, St Mary’s Hospice shop re-opened after a major refurbishment and I was delighted to cut the ribbon and declare the new, bright, welcoming and seemingly more spacious shop well and truly open. Meeting a number of the staff and volunteers was a privilege – they give up so much of their time for this very worthy cause. Do go and have a look – it will be well worth the journey. Later in the month saw Remembrance services, first
at Rusland where the British Legion hold a service for the whole district, and latterly, on the 11th, at the War Memorial. Remembrance Sunday brought a very moving service at St Paul’s followed by the parade to the War Memorial and the laying of wreaths. This year the weather held for us with raindrops only manifesting themselves when we were in sight of the Victoria Hall and post parade cups of tea. Looking around the town many of the trees are still showing magnificent colours but leaves are falling and will continue to do so for some time to come. This can cause a problem on pavements and roads, especially after rain as they get slippery and
potentially a hazard for the unwary. As just one of the many small settlements in the county we cannot expect Cumbria County Council to clear all the paths and pavements and even the town’s amazing Lengthsman cannot do them all! So please be patient and realistic and maybe, if you are able-bodied and you think an area near your home needs clearing you could get out the sweeping brush and have a go yourself. At a recent meeting held at Silverdale Golf Club, the Morecambe Bay Partnership welcomed interested individuals and businesses to a presentation explaining their intention to develop an electric bike network, in conjunction with the newly launched Morecambe Bay Cycle Way. In fact since the launch, they reported that 2,000 maps of the route had been sold suggesting plenty of people are tackling some, or all, of the route. The intention is to now create
a series of hire and charge points, along the cycle way, which it is hoped will attract greater numbers of participants. Nationally, sales of electric bikes increased by 25% in the last year, so there is clearly sharp growth and increased interest around electric bikes. In many ways they encourage people to give exercise a go, who might otherwise be unwilling or unable. An electric bike still has to be pedalled so there are health benefits, even allowing for the artificial assistance. Grange would be a superb

You could easily imagine someone turning up to rent an electric bike and doing half the route one way on day one and then the second half on day two, using the train as the means of return. Coupled together with a night in a local hotel and dinner in a nearby restaurant and you have the makings of a terrific hassle free mini break.
Parking charges for workers and locals In response to our articles about parking in Grange, District Councillor, Eric Morrell has taken up the issue with SLDC, on behalf of local people. Along with local business owner, Sian Lambert, Mr Morrell would like to hear from residents about what they feel would be a fair deal for locals, workers or otherwise. SLDC kindly put a ‘£1.20 per day’ charge on Berners car park but as reported previously this is too far out of town for many.
Sian Lambert has suggested that SLDC opens up Hampsfell Car Park at £1.20 per day. She told Grange Now: “Hopefully it is an all win situation – employers can attract and keep staff if they can earn good wages locally without having to lose a high amount of their wage in parking/travel fees. Businesses/customers can benefit by the one hour spaces being kept available for customers and keeping people local. Employees will find it less

An Evening with Val Armstrong
The guests were welcomed by the President, Leslie Smyth, who introduced the celebrity speaker, Val Armstrong from BBC Radio Cumbria. All proceeds from the evening were donated to Val’s charity, Breast Cancer Care, and a cheque for £1200 has been sent to them. Val touched on her own journey with cancer, but spoke mainly about her job with Radio Cumbria recounting humorous stories from her broadcasting career. During the evening guests enjoyed wine and canapes and were able to browse a variety of stalls while enjoying the music
of a string quartet. Display boards showcased the work of Soroptimist International, and the projects in which the Grange Club is involved. Cath Holland, a local midwife, had a stall outlining her work to eradicate FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) in Kenya, and the Club will be sending 1000 hand-made bracelets with her on her next visit. These bracelets are used as an alternative evidence of the girls’ rite of passage. £127.50 was also raised during the evening for the British Legion from the sale of poppies knitted by members. Many thanks are due to all who supported the event, those who donated raffle prizes, and to the Manager and staff of the Netherwood Hotel.

Lauren’s designs are definitely on-piste
Twenty four year old Lauren Davies from Flookburgh is certainly making a name for herself in the world of snowboarding and fashion. Lauren, a former Cartmel priory student, gained a fashion degree at the Manchester School of Art, and she has been selling her range of clothing online, but this Christmas Urban piste is set to hit the High Street, as well as the slopes! Lauren will take over Kendal’s pop up shop in Finkle Street on 11th
December and will be open until the end of the month. As well as selling her clothes she will be showing ski and snowboarding films from local filmmakers and photographers. Lauren, who has been hooked on snow sports since the age of six, has based her clothing range on the Urban pistes which we ride on here in the UK. As Lauren says: “It’s about time we have a brand that truly reflects the unique and diverse winter sports scene that we have here in the UK.”
After just over two years of work the Neighbourhood Plan for Grange and Kents Bank is nearing completion and will be available for public consultation soon.
The Steering Group (a group of a dozen local residents) have tried to bring together issues which may affect the planning and development of Grange and Kents Bank, over the next decade. It has not been an easy task often frustrated by planning constraints. What we can’t do is to alter decisions of SLDC over the proposed developments in Grange but what we can do is to make sure they are in character with the town and fulfil appropriate environmental concerns.

In a future edition of Grange Now there will be a Summary of the Plan and your opportunity to give us some feedback. You will also be able to read a full version of the Plan in the Library and Victoria Hall. There will be local consultations arranged for both Grange and Kents Bank residents. This is a really important part of the process. After all it is the local community’s Neighbourhood Plan. Early next year the public of Grange will have its opportunity to vote on the Plan so make sure you know what it is about.

The first meeting was held in mid-November, a Committee was appointed and a Constitution agreed. Their first event will be a Festive Coffee Morning on 16th December, both as a customer appreciation for Library members and to introduce the Group. They are holding their next meeting in January.

In spite of their grand promises to keep the country moving forward during the uncertain times we will be facing over the coming years as we extricate ourselves from the EU I am becoming increasingly worried by several of the Government’s decisions with regards services for rural areas like ours. Last month they announced that funding for pharmacies would be reduced by about 7% over the next couple of years. This is as pharmacies take on ever more responsibility for keeping us all healthy, importantly giving out advice on how to sort out our problems without having to pop in to see our overworked GPs. What is really worrying is that these cuts will hit smaller pharmacies like the ones we use around here much more than big pharmacies in cities who make lots of money in addition to what they make from giving out prescriptions by selling perfumes and other stuff. I went along to the Helme Chase pharmacy in Kendal

regarding the drains, culverts and surrounding areas on Windermere Road. Both culverts have been dredged and all the drains have been completely cleared and camera checked to ensure that there are no blockages. A start has been made to clean out and cut back the undergrowth around the pond at the back of the car park. Work is ongoing as I write this report and hopefully this will contribute to help alleviate the potential flooding in this area. Christmas is a busy time for most people but I would just ask that we all spare a little time in our hectic lives to help the elderly members of our community over the winter months. The problem is that if they are forced to reduce their hours this will simply force people to go to their GP or even A&E to sort out any issues they have, with the result that the saving the Government is trying to make will end up costing us all a lot more money. There is special support for rural pharmacies being put in place but the figures that I have say that only one in five of the pharmacies in our area will be able to claim this extra money. It is obviously for very small pharmacies indeed.

There was a full agenda for the meeting on Monday 14th November and item 9b was the draft budget. The way this works is that the budget must be discussed by Councillors at three separate meetings before a decision is made. This was the first time the budget for 2017/18 was considered and Councillors had two options to look at as a starting point for their discussions. Draft Budget A included an increase of 18p a month per household and Draft Budget B showed an increase of 39p per household. The increase is needed to cover the funding which SLDC are withdrawing from the public toilets and
Victoria Hall over the next few years. Council Leader, Tricia Thomas, asked for a third option, Budget C, to be brought to the next meeting. This will show a greater increase and would enable GTC to do more. Councillors were split on this issue but it will have to be discussed twice further before it is voted on. Elsewhere on the agenda the Contract with Horton Leisure Management was discussed. The company took over the running of the Prom Recreation Ground at Easter and they put forward a five year plan to take the project forward. They said: “Based on the takings and number of customers we have served this year, the increases will make the site viable and profitable, thus being able

Jeremy and Mandy told Grange Now: “There will again be a collection box at the end of the drive with
all donations going to the NSPCC to help children in Cumbria. Last year’s total will take some repeating (£3715) but there are lots of new lights this year so please come along, enjoy and donate. If you haven’t been before, head to Cark from the Cartmel road and turn left as you enter the village- you really can’t miss them! Merry Christmas from us all at Trevenna.” The big switch on will take place at 6pm on Friday 2nd December, and thereafter every evening from 4.30pm to 10pm.

Brighter Christmas in Ulverston! Christmas in Ulverston will be extra special this year thanks to new Christmas lights, courtesy of Ulverston BID, backed up by a fantastic programme of family-friendly events. December 10th and 11th there’s a Christmas market in the Coronation Hall with music, food and drink, artisan gifts and crafts, and there’s festive Bingo at the Coro on December 20th. Santa will be in the Market Hall every Saturday, and Sundays December 11th and 18th. Families can win cash following the Santa Trail around the shops, or take time out for the ‘Frozen’ themed roller disco sessions on December 18th at 4.00pm and 6.30pm. With favourite shops, cafes and restaurants and some lively new additions, Christmas shopping in Ulverston has never been easier or more fun!
It’s a wonderful life
The Roxy cinema Ulverston and the Royalty cinema, Bowness-on-Windermere are gearing up for their annual Christmas Eve treat : the 1946 James Stewart classic, ‘It’s a wonderful life’. The film can be seen at 11am at the Roxy and 5pm at the Royalty, each show being preceded by a short compilation of vintage film clips. “It’s become a tradition with us,” said Charles Morris who is proprietor of both cinemas, “And it is becoming more popular with each successive year.” The film tells the tale of George Bailey who has devoted his life
to the people of Bedford Falls, but has a disastrous stroke of bad luck which almost drives him to suicide – until a gentle angel comes down to help him and shows him how much poorer the world would have been without him. “The film has its climax on Christmas Eve when everything turns out alright, and there really could not be a better film to lift the spirits and put you in a good mood for Christmas,” said Mr Morris. Also preparing for the event is Butterfingers café in Grange, which is supplying mince pies for the events.

Eggnog Recipe Eggnog is associated with writer Edgar Allan Poe. His family recipe used brandy, while others add in the flavours of candied lemon peel, nutmeg and shredded almonds. This version from Delicious Magazine prescribes simple ingredients, beautifully blended. Try it with Low Sizergh Barn packedon-laying-day free range eggs and raw milk straight from our cows: Ingredients 100g caster sugar 2 large free-range eggs, separated 600ml whole milk ¼ tsp vanilla extract 100ml rum or bourbon 100ml whipping cream ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg

Method 1. Put the caster sugar and egg yolks in a bowl and whisk with either a balloon whisk or electric hand whisk until thick and creamy. 2. Heat the milk in a saucepan over a medium heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and pour into the egg and sugar mixture, whisking all the time. Pour the whisked mixture back into the pan and heat gently, stirring, until smooth and slightly thickened. Add the vanilla and rum or bourbon and whisk well. Remove from the heat. 3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks, then fold into the cooled egg and milk mixture. Beat the whipping cream until thick, then fold three-quarters of this into the mixture. Chill everything in the fridge until ready to serve. 4. To serve, ladle into 8 punch glasses and dollop 1 tsp of the remaining whipped cream on top of each. Finish with a good grating of nutmeg on each. Eggnog can be made a day ahead but you need to keep it chilled. Serve within 24 hours.

Friends at Christmas was established in Grange ten years ago. Ever since we have been celebrating Christmas by bringing together, on Christmas Day, up to 50 people who would otherwise be on their own.
The event, which is generously supported by the businesses of Grange and surrounding area, is run by volunteers and comprises not only a delicious meal but traditional entertainment and live music.
Last year, 2 days before Christmas, the event had to be hurriedly relocated from the United Reform Church Hall to the Methodist Hall because of flooding. Many people said they enjoyed a change of venue so this year, to ring the changes, Friends at Christmas have accepted the kind invitation to use the café at Fish-overChips. Robert will be serving

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE
Cold, wet and gloomy December is a month of reflection, where you can afford to take it a bit easier and ponder the year’s successes and failures, then when that gets too depressing, you can start thinking about your allotment and plan what you can do differently to improve it next year. Make lists and sketch out what you want to grow, consider not only how much space you have in terms of height, breadth and depth but also about when they will be harvested, and also in terms of flavours that work together. This is gardening’s fifth dimension.
Choose one or two different things to grow every year, whether it’s a different variety of courgette or something you’ve never tried before, it helps maintain interest, expand your knowledge and provides a bit more of an incentive to get to your allotment. Look over your tools and see what needs repairing, sharpen pointy things and oil creaky things. Rub a bit of teak oil
into the wooden handles of forks, spades and rakes to help extend their lifespan. Sort out the slow puncture on the wheelbarrow. If you’ve any raised beds, wooden compost bins or other structures, now is the time to repair them.
The Robins of Brown Robin
Rhubarb can be divided in order to create more plants for your own plot or to give to your friends. I’d avoid giving them as Christmas presents as muddy, rooty lumps aren’t always best received and can be difficult to wrap.
But they are here all year round, although some of ours move south and we get an influx of Robins from northern Europe. They are a member of the thrush family and the Robin is our national bird.
You could still be harvesting leeks, parsnips and Brassicas, such as winter cabbages and Brussels sprouts (throw a bit of netting over these to keep off hungry pigeons).
You can start pruning currant bushes, cut out one in three of the oldest stems (you can usually tell by how dark the bark is, the older the darker) as well as any dead/ diseased broken or weak stems. If you want to increase your stock just stick a branch into the ground and there’s a good chance that they will have rooted by the spring.
Whilst you work, you may find Robins loitering nearby hoping you will turn up some bug or other. Don’t begrudge them this, rather encourage them, even take them some seed or bird food, as, tragically, for this seasonal star of cards and cakes their lifespan is only around thirteen months so it’s likely this will be their only Christmas.

Some people think Robins only appear at Christmas, and I suppose that is true in a sense, as we often see them on Christmas cards and wrapping paper, and they are a welcome sight on a cold winter’s day.
They are often the first bird to start the dawn chorus, and often sing late in the evening, mainly to protect their territories. They are prolific breeders too, with up to five broods, and they will nest anywhere they can. No one is sure where Brown robin nature reserve got its name, however the Cumbria Grand Hotel was built as Brown Robin House in the 19th century. All I have found is a reference to a song from the Jacobite era and indeed the Cumbria Grand does have a Jacobean lounge and Cumbria was at the heart of this uprising.
I have had a couple of so-called companion robins over the years and I found them to be tenacious and full of character. One would sometimes follow me into the office for food and on cold days sit next to
the heater to get warm. What struck me most is the amount of fighting over territories that took place. Their lifestyle was once described like a storyline from an 80’s soap called Dallas, full of treachery, adultery and even murder. As any gardener will know, these opportunistic birds will often follow you as you disturb the soil, picking up tasty morsels on the way. I have been close to standing on some in the past, as they get under your feet. Often the first bird you encounter as you enter woodlands, due to their curiosity and they will give early warning of danger.
So, as you walk around the reserve, remember, you will be surrounded by many Robin territories. Hope you all have a Happy Christmas. Tony.

The best of British blues
Flookburgh Band’s Christmas concert One hundred and seven years after they first got together and Flookburgh Band are still going strong. Their Christmas Carol Concert at Victoria Hall will be as popular as ever so please get your tickets early.
Bowness Bay Blues has built a reputation as “a flagship for the very best of British blues”. Music fans travel to the event from far afield. Those who live in South Lakes are so fortunate to have such an event right on their doorsteps! The festival improves each year and The Rotary Club of Windermere, who organise the festival, are convinced that 2017 will be the best yet! The Festival will see three nights held in the Wheelhouse, on the Glebe. Grange drama grapevine Furness playwright/actor Ken Smyth & fellow performer Michelle Yates, two former members of Pennington Drama, a village group forced to bring down the final curtain on productions, will soon be on stage again. Their new dramatic ‘home’ with Grange Drama suits everyone whilst they continue with a personal project as well. Writing & performing material created by themselves, in a competitive arena under the name of Cosgood, will continue here. Their entry into the All England One Act Drama Festival preliminary round in Grange next Spring will be supported by Grange Drama who, for the first time, will also be lending a hand with the production of publicity

Artists of the Month: The kids from the panto! Our ‘Artists of the Month’ this month must be the forty-four youngsters (aged 7-17) who are about to entertain us with their wonderful version of Cinderella. They’ve been hard at work rehearsing since the beginning of September and the Youth of Grange Operatic Society always delight with their wonderful performances.
Director, Jean Malkin, told Grange Now: “The children and young people this year have been magnificent, working so hard to produce their best performance for everyone to enjoy; particularly those who had leading roles in the recent Cartmel Priory School performance of Oliver - Amy and her brother Tom, Max, Martha, Jess, Molly and Reece. How they managed to learn two sets of lines alongside each other I really don’t know. Of course, they’re young and enthusiastic, as are all our wonderful children.

Author, Graham Whalan, was born in Ulverston and spent the larger part of his younger days there and still visits often.

This project now in its third year is giving much needed support to local people with memory loss and their carers, and brings fun, friendship and laughter to all who attend.
DVD filmed during a Singing for Memory session at Allithwaite Community Centre, was very well received by an audience of nearing 1000. It was described as “a brilliant presentation that did the cause of raising awareness of supporting those with memory loss and their carers a huge boost.” Janice Carrick from Grange SI told Grange Now: “Lots of ladies were singing Daisy, Daisy round the Hilton Hotel that evening”.

Acorn Montessori
With more new faces and the start of Monday morning sessions since half term, life continues to be busy at Acorn Montessori. The children had a wonderful time visiting Cartmel Woods to view the signs of Autumn. They have since enjoyed a variety of activities relating to Halloween and Bonfire night and are now looking towards the lead up to Christmas.The children are learning new songs for their Nativity Play which will be performed for their parents, the pupils at Cartmel Primary School and the residents of Boarbank and The Old Vicarage Nursing Homes in Allithwaite. With a variety of craft activities and a Christmas Party to look forward to the next few weeks are going to be a fun time.
Flookburgh Primary As November comes to an end we start preparing for our usual busy December and look back on what has been a very exciting, and full, Autumn term. Our year 3 and 4 children took part in a singing and musical instrument bonanza in Kendal. The children performed songs from Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat alongside other schools in South Cumbria. Well done to all involved, the children were fantastic! Parents were invited into school to join an evening of Maths workshops, demonstrating how maths is taught in school. Thank you to all who attended we hope to arrange more events similar to this. We had some fantastic results in the recent Cross Country Running event at CPS and would like to congratulate all the children who took part and well done to those who placed at the top. The children have donated to Children in Need by coming to school in non uniform, thank you all for contributing to such a worthy charity. The whole school have enjoyed a visit from the Owl Sanctuary who spent an afternoon showing us some beautiful birds. The children were able to handle the owls and ask some very interesting questions.

The Autumn term is flying by at Grange CE Primary School. At our Harvest Festival at the UR Church we collected tinned goods to be donated to the Foodbank in Kendal with the retiring collection of £42 being donated to the Bishop’s Harvest Appeal. On the 15th November we sent 48 ‘Boxes of Hope’ for children in Eastern Europe. We have attended numerous sports festivals; our Y2 children took part in Multiskills and Years 5 and 6 took part in the Sportshall Athletics festival at Cartmel Priory School where the children came first therefore moving on to the South Lakes cluster event where

This month, we have been busy once more with sporting and music events. Year 5 and 6 girls gained first place in the Cluster Cross Country event. Our children were also fortunate to receive an invitation from Cartmel Priory School to watch the dress rehearsal of Oliver! They all seemed to have a great time and were very impressed with the talent shown by the young people. A highlight of this term has been our recent visit from Pudsey Bear! The children were delighted with the surprise (we managed to keep it a secret) and Pudsey

The children have also been thinking of others less fortunate than themselves and have made shoes boxes of gifts for Cumbria ‘Boxes of hope’, and this week we are also dressing up and holding a cake stall to raise money for ‘Children in Need’.
We have been having lots of fun learning experiences this half term both in the classroom and outside. Year 2 and 3 class have continued their outdoor Maths sessions which link outdoor learning with real problem solving mastering their maths skills. Reception to Year 3 visited Castle Head for ‘Apple day’. The children were able to take part in the whole process of making apple juice; from

harvesting the apples to pressing them and finally bottling. A group of children took part in the South lakes pupil parliament and then shared ideas with the rest of us about improvements that they would like to see in school and the local area.
As well as our usual clubs in school, we have a newly formed choir which is busy rehearsing for various events leading up to Christmas. The children are also getting ready to perform Cinderella and Rockerfella at Lindale Village Hall and our annual Nativity and Carols for parents and friends.

What is the true cost of care? The hall and stage were transformed into a workhouse by members of the GCSE Art group and the Rawsthorn Family. Max B, Year 8, gave a strong vocal performance, making a starring debut on stage as Oliver, the unfortunate orphan. The multi-talented Tom and Amy S were superb as the iconic characters of The Artful Dodger and Nancy, giving performances that would not have looked out of place in the West End. Lydia D, new to the limelight, played Fagin sympathetically and convincingly.This year also saw students leading in the design of the choreography and playing key roles in technical production. The audiences were also delighted by key character
performances such as Max G and Stephanie G as Mr and Mrs Bumble, Mikey R and Sophie H as Mr and Mrs Sowerberry and Nathan S as Bill Sykes- indeed there was a big gasp from the audience as Bill fell to his death at the end. As with all of our school performances, it has been a pleasure to work with the pupils and see the fruits of our efforts. It is very much a team effort and it is great to see pupils rising through the ranks to gain experience and then bigger parts, especially when the audience leave ready to say “Please sir can I have some more?”. Watch out for next year’s musical, Mary Poppins, and our drama Lord of the Flies.
Have you considered the cost of care in later life? Not only is forward planning potentially more cost-effective, but it can save you time and unnecessary stress while also protecting your assets.

Is a new and innovative clinic that will deliver a much needed service for the people of Grange over Sands. Its door opened to the public in November. The practice is headed up by BDA and HCPC Registered Dietitian Janette Ruth Brassey who’s professional time is currently split between the new Grange clinic and 2 days a week as a specialist surgical dietitian at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
So what is a Dietitian?
Registered dietitians are qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems at an individual and wider public health level. Uniquely, dietitians use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease, which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
Dietitians are statutorily regulated, with a protected title and governed by an ethical code, to ensure that they always work to the highest standard. The spectrum of environments in which dietitians practise is broad and includes the NHS, private practice, industry, education, research, sport, media, public relations, publishing, non-government organisations and national and local government. Their advice influences food and health policy across the spectrum from government to local communities and individuals.

Charity Will Month We’re taking part in charity will month this month and with your help have so far raised £3,000! We’re aiming to raise as much money as possible for our two chosen charities – North West Air Ambulance and St Mary’s Hospice. This month we are donating each one of our fees for wills to the fundraising pot. With the average will costing around £150 to £200, it’s a great opportunity to give something back to the local community, while also raising awareness of the importance of wills. We have had a fantastic response so far, with lots of people coming forward and taking part in this charity drive. We have marked Charity Will Month in previous years, but we’re hoping to raise more than ever this time. A will is typically one of those things that people put to the back of their minds, but we’re using this month to raise awareness and prompt people to come along and find out more about how important a will really is. As a local company, we’re really pleased to be able to do something that gives back to the local community and helps two vital charities. St Mary’s Hospice is a cause that has had an impact on the lives of so many people, and North West Air Ambulance is a service that is crucial to the local area. We’ve been overwhelmed with the response so far, so with another couple of weeks to go, we’re hoping many more people will come forward. Our staff are delighted, as each one of our offices is very active when it comes to fundraising and many staff members have raised money as individuals, so it’s really nice to do something that brings the whole team together. On Remembrance Sunday there was a joint service held at the URC Church. Rev Jo Rand was the preacher, and there were readings from diaries of soldiers and nurses at the front during the Battle of the Somme. These were quite moving, as was the time of silence for remembering. This was begun by the playing of the Last Post, by Derek Horn, and ended as he played Reveille.

On Sunday, 6th November, Rev Pamela West was the preacher and after the service, tables were laid for a faith lunch. Our Minister, Jo, has a special birthday coming up and this party was planned in secret for her. Her husband, ‘taking her out for lunch’ led her to the church hall. She was genuinely surprised and the lunch was an overwhelming success. Families from Toast Church returned to join with us and other members from the United Reformed church in Grange also came.

On Sunday 30th October, Dave Holland conducted morning service and Tom Ash spoke about ‘Care for Life’, an organisation in Leeds which works with the homeless and other needy people. There is a farm, where people of various ages help out, a café where the public can dine, and a shop where farm produce is sold. There are also two houses, where about ten residents live; one for men and one for women. Others are supported by the organisation,
and can always rely on a listening ear and help when needed. Tom showed a short video of the work and answered questions.
On December 4th at the Methodist Church there is a special service of quiet reflections for Advent. Sunday 18th December at 10.30am, also at the Methodist Church, is our joint Nativity Service. Our Carol Service is on Thursday, 22nd December at the United Reformed at 7pm, with our joint Christmas Day Service also at the United Reformed Church. On New Year’s Day, we
meet for worship at the Methodist Church for our first joint service of 2017. Everyone is welcome at all of these services. Our Christmas coffee morning is on Saturday, December 3rd from 10am to 12noon. We look forward to seeing you there.

St Mary’s, Allithwaite There has been a lot happening at St Mary’s in recent weeks. In October we hosted a very successful Macmillan coffee morning which raised over £500 for their fantastic work supporting cancer sufferers and their families, and the following day our annual Harvest Thanksgiving service was celebrated in a church beautifully decorated by various community groups. This was followed by an auction of the harvest produce with the proceeds being donated to the relief work of TEAR Fund, and a subsequent visit to a morning service by a representative from TEAR Fund gave us a greater insight into the work they are involved with worldwide. On the last Sunday in October we hosted “A Big Brekkie” and together with our friends from St John’s, Flookburgh enjoyed a delicious menu choice of bacon, sausages, toast and croissants, accompanied by fruit juice, tea

The next day was Hallowe’en or All Hallows Eve - which was originally a Christian festival acknowledging the reality and darkness of evil and death - before celebrating All Saints Day on November 1st when we remember that Jesus is the light that has overcome darkness and death dispelling our fears and bringing new life for eternity. So Messy Hallowe’en (our 21st Messy Church) was enjoyed by around 60 children (accompanied by parents and carers) with an afternoon of creative and fun activities around the theme of “light” followed by a short time of

The traditional Remembrance Sunday service in November was as always a moving time of reflection and thanksgiving for those from the parish who laid down their lives in both world wars and whose names are commemorated on the church war memorial and read out during the service. We look forward to Christmas this year with a range of services and events for all age groups and to which all are invited to join – see below for details.
St Paul’s and The Fell Church, Grange We are now able to see that the reordering work, currently being undertaken at St Paul’s, is moving on quickly and everything is coming together as planned. The church is still open daily but whilst the work is ongoing visitors are requested to use the main church entrance during the week. The 10am Eucharist service on Wednesdays is being held at the Fell Church because of the work in progress but the Sunday 11.00am service will still be held at St Paul’s as usual. The candlelit carol service will be held in church at 6.00pm on Sunday 18th December and all are welcome to stay on after the service and join us for a glass of mulled wine

We value our links with Allithwaite School and a new initiative this term has been to hold their Monday morning assembly as a time of collective worship in church, so after dropping off the children in school the parents are invited to enjoy tea/coffee and toast before sharing in the time of worship together. The children are involved in this in various ways, eg acting out a Bible story, offering prayers and managing the IT system.

Lindale Bowling club secured their place at the top of Division Two in Victoria’s Floodlight Bowling League by beating Milnthorpe 4 games to 1 in their last game of the competition. The Committee provided lunch for the members and it was well received by all. The meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem followed by various thankyous and apologies.The minutes were displayed on the board and duly signed. Ruth gave details of Federation events and referred to the Fed Newsletter, and she asked members to sign the appropriate lists. November birthday cards were distributed and Happy Birthday was sung. The AGM followed and an auditor appointed.The financial report was given by the Treasurer.The secretary then gave an annual report of activities and events occurring over the past year. The President gave her annual report and stated that she would be standing down as President after serving for 13 years in that capacity. The Committee nominations were made and a new President was elected. Janice Carrick gave a short video presentation of Singing For Memory and gave us a brief outline of what was involved during the sessions.It was very well received by the members and they all enjoyed the singing interlude.A vote of thanks was given by Lillian Greenhalgh. Our ‘Evening with Val Armstrong’ raised £1200 for the charity Breast Cancer Care, so many thanks to all who attended. On Oct 19th, Club members, and many others, enjoyed the Colours Fashion show in Cartmel Village Hall, getting some excellent bargains and raised £280 for charities including Partners in Education Swaziland and International Justice Mission. Twelve members travelled to Malta for the Soroptimist Conference, where member Janice Carrick made a presentation on Singing for Memory which has been so successfully set up and run by the club. Club members will be out in Kendal on Nov 25th, as part of the White Ribbon campaign for International Day for Eradication of Violence against Women. A week later, members are mounting a display in Grange Library on Modern Day Slavery. The 92nd Annual Meeting took place with Caroline Blee presiding. There was a satisfactory financial statement and the committee report reminded us of the busy past year. Sarah Bradley and Ann Walshaw have both resigned from the committee and were given bouquets in recognition of many years` service. The committee for 2017 was elected en bloc. Caroline Blee remains President, Pauline Hodgson secretary,Shirley Christie Treasurer. Linda Park will be Vice President and Juliette Slaughter Assistant Secretary. October 13th nine walkers walked the 5 miles from Coniston northwards on the Cumbrian Way through Low Yewdale/ Tarn Hows woods to Tarn Hows. Lunch was taken overlooking the tarn. Return via Hill Fell Plantation, Boon Crag farm ( we saw a variety of sheep breeds and a late-born Jacob lamb) and Guard’s wood, the walk finishing in a Coniston pub. 27th October on a sunny, windy day 6 walkers starting from Troutbeck Church Bridge walked towards Holehird garden, with view stunning Autumn colours before reach the Orrest Head, lunch was taken sheltered from wind, returning via Longmire through Limefitt Park, before arrive to car park we saw the much talked about “Orange sheep”. 19th October, a group of 9 walkers set off from Blawith Church for a 6 mile

walk across to a Water Yeat, Brown Howe, Beacon and Beacon Tarn, before picking up the Cumbria Way to return to Blawith. The weather was dry and the views beautiful. On Nov. 1st. six walkers enjoyed a perfect, sunny Autumn day on an 8 mile walk in the Winster Valley. We lunched overlooking Lake Windermere on Rosthwaite heights before returning to our cars and post walk refreshment at The Brown Horse pub.

In October, we held our AGM and Janet Ferguson was elected President for a second year. Two new members also joined the Committee – Angela Walsh and Pauline Ramsbottom. Margaret read out the Annual Report which detailed all our activities, achievements and successes in the last 12 months. Zoe Daws then gave a very entertaining talk about how she spent her twenties teaching in Greeceher adventures were very much Shirley Valentine meets Mamma Mia. For the first time we entered three teams in the WI Quiz on 7 November – our venue was Gilpin Bridge. One of our teams – the Promettes- won on the night, although it was a close run event with one of our other teams coming 4th. We will be having our festive meal in December at the ‘At Home’ bistro. Grange Lecture Society
On 25th October in an illustrated lecture entitled ‘The Crowded Sky’, Phil Holt spoke entertainingly about his work during a long career as an air traffic controller. Interspersing his lecture with film and humorous anecdotes he showed how technological advances, like radar, made during World War Two helped create a system of air traffic control which eventually grew into the complex system used today. Controllers work in teams (including women) and Phil outlined the procedures involved and the complicated problems faced, especially during emergencies, in ensuring the safety of vast numbers of flights worldwide. In their lecture on 8th November distinguished amateur photographers Rosamund and John MacFarlane vividly recalled a three-week summer trek through Zanskar, a remote valley high in the Indian Himalayas cut off by snow for most of the year. Being accompanied by a Zanskari friend, whose family still live there, they were allowed a special insight into the people of this rarely visited area, their Buddhist culture and the harsh conditions in which they live. All this, including the spectacular Himalayan landscape, was illustrated with the aid of some fine photographs. There being no lectures in December, the programme resumes on 10th January.

There is just the one talk this month. It will take place on Tuesday 6th December. The presentation will be by Brian Marsland on the subject of, ‘The Story of Lead Mining in Northern Ireland’. Our first talk in January 2017 will be on 10th January and this is entitled, ‘The Great Divide Trail of the Canadian Rockies’.The presentation will be given by Chris Wright. Into the New year, we meet each Tuesday at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank. Our usual meeting time is 10.15am but our printed programme shows when

Grange over Sands Golf Club
The Club will be holding its first ‘new members’ get together on Sunday 11th December. With a significant take up on the recent ‘winter membership’ deal, the club feel it important to make newcomers aware of course and Pro studio facilities, how to enter major and fun competitions and to meet the Captains as well as fellow potential ‘buddy golfers’. With the Christmas lunch the week after (18th) these are busy times at the club. The Murder Mystery Evening based on the TV programme ‘Allo Allo’ was a huge success with everyone joining in the fun and having a great time. Watch out for other events open to the members and public including a monthly quiz on a Wednesday evening. The presentation of the annual prizes for the men took place at the end of October and the ladies luncheon and prize giving will take place at the end of November.
Grange Probus Club
On 14th November Ken Taylor gave a beautifully illustrated talk to club members on a visit he made to India to see Royal Bengal Tigers in the wild. He began his talk with some statistics, mentioning that India had one fifth of the worlds population in one fiftieth of the landmass. He also reported that there were more tigers held by private individuals in America than were living wild in India! Of the original nine species of tigers three are now extinct In a move to protect the surviving animals, hunting was banned in 1972 and National parks formed. Ken visited three National Parks and was fortunate to see a number of tigers, some at very close quarters! He then moved on to Agra wher he visited palaces and forts of the Mughal Emperors PROBUS is a club for retired men and women of the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. Our committee was delighted with the response our “Drop In” coffee morning at the Methodist Hall on 25 October. Members old, new and prospective enjoyed chatting to one another and group co-ordinators and committee members to find out more about what we do and the opportunities that are on offer. Our Victoria Hall meeting on Tuesday 15th November heard from the historian Rob David who gave his presentation “Waiter, Miner, Butcher, Spy” exploring the way in which Cumbrian residents from Austria and German were treated during World War One. This was based on his research using sources such as local newspapers, census data and local and national archives. On December 20th we will discover “The Forgotten Foods of Christmas” with the renowned food historian Ivan Day who will tickle our “virtual taste buds” with the culinary delights of Christmas

Members were made very welcome at the home of Ann Heap for their meeting on 1st November. Following a cheese and wine reception, they viewed her collection of beautiful handmade jewellery. A quiz and a demonstration of knotting pearls ended a very enjoyable evening. On 15th November we were back at school. Mr Colin Milner gave a very interesting slideshow on education in school throughout the 19th,20th and 21st Century. We progressed from austere classrooms with desks in regimental rows and slates to write on through to the present day. Classrooms now are colourful, computers are used and children learn through play. Colin commented on each slide which made for a very informative evening.

Monday 21st November Cartmel and district flower club held the Annual General Meeting in Cartmel village hall ,members enjoyed the wonderful selection of the Jacob’s Join, followed by an excellent demonstration and talk on Hats by Margaret Watkins. The next meeting will be our ‘GALA’ Evening in the Victoria Hall, Grange on Tuesday 13th December at 7.30pm. Our annual coffee morning was held in the Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 12th November, 2016. A steady stream of people visited this event, and helped us to raise £834 for the RNLI. We are very grateful indeed to all the kind and generous people who donated items and gifts, and who assisted at the coffee morning.

In October, David Midwinter, UK director of Teach Beyond UK, came and explained how Teach Beyond equips teachers to reach their full potential as Christian educators working in 47 countries with more than 60 international schools and universities helping over 183 thousand students directly worldwide.Working with other partner organisations, they help provide professional advice and staffing in schools and higher educational colleges, as well as running summer camps training students how to use ‘Teaching as a foreign language’ as a means of helping to advance the sharing of God’s good news to all.David showed many examples of individual students who had been much helped to bridge the gap from an educationally paralysed background into a new world of tremendous potential advancement in the future for themselves and their community. David’s talk was indeed a challenge and an inspiration. Coffee Club in 2017 starts with a talk from Eric Proudfoot, who has regularly visited Nepal for several years. He will talk about ‘The Nepal Earthquake - One year on.’ The meeting is on January 17th, at Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank at 10.30am preceded by coffee from 10am – to which all are very welcome.

The course is in excellent condition, summer greens are in play throughout the winter period and will only revert to winter greens in frosty weather. Come and have a game at our friendly club, or take advantage of our winter membership of £50 which runs till the end of February 2017, which will be refunded if you take out full membership next year. We finished our Competition season with Captains team versus the President’s team with a win for the President, recently we started our Winter competitions with the Turkey Competition which was won by David Moore with a 67net, runner up was Ian Campbell on 68net. On Friday 11th November we held a Gentleman’s Evening which was a great success with President Peter Clough comparing the evening and Gary Wolstenholme MBE, European Seniors Pro tour member gave a talk on his career highlights. Allithwaite Running Club
The club hosted the ‘Allithwaite 8’, a mixed terrain race on the 29th October. From Allithwaite, the course went up Hampsfell, before descending to Longlands Hall and Aynsome. The course then climbed to Greenbank where runners turned for home, negotiating Cartmel racecourse, before a mixture of trail, roads and fields took runners to the finish. First lady was Anna Lupton (Black Combe) in 58:08, 2nd Alison Matthews (Darlington Harriers) and 3rd was Annie Conway (Ambleside). First man was Harvey Lord (Black Combe) in 53:18, 2nd Matthew Smith (unattached) and 3rd James Harris (Fell Runners AS).
The race organisers would like to thank the runners who came from all over the country and made it a success. Thanks also go to the marshals, Matt Bacon and Paul Rattigan (first aiders), Heather Wilson, Jill Pocklington & Ruth Airey for organising refreshments and Jon Garratt / Holker Estates, Martin Ainscough, the Dicksons at Longlands/Borwick’s Aynsome and Steve Gelderd for permissions to run over various pieces of land. The race is the latest event to support and promote local runners. Our Monday and Thursday sessions are for all abilities and we’re keen to meet new members. This month’s highlight was our presentation evening when we made presentations to the organisations for whom we have raised money during the year. This year we will be handing over cheques totalling over £5,000 to St Mary’s Hospice, Jigsaw, the Alzheimers Society, Grange Operatic Society Pantomime, Kidsafe, Marie Curie Cancer Care and North West Air Ambulance. We also donated the proceeds of our Bake Off held in the late summer at Victoria Hall to the support group for the Hall. The evening was well attended and thoroughly enjoyable with a supper and quiz following the various presentations. The Santa Sleigh will be out and about in December as usual bringing good cheer. All funds raised benefit local organisations so please look out for us. Our annual Coffee Morning at Flookburgh Village Hall. This will be on Saturday, December 10th starting at 10am.Our usual array of cakes, bottle tombola and other fun things to guess at will be available. Our social whirl continues with a weekend away in Blackpool at the end of January 2017. The Lions are accompanied by a few friends and have had an excellent time in previous years. We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities.
