Letter from the Editor

COVER STORY

Lindale in Times Past

Lindale village is well known for its garages. What is perhaps less well known is that there were Coachbuilders in Lindale from around 1880.

The garage on the Grange Road opened in 1927 and was one of the first to sell petrol on the road from Kendal to Ulverston. Its early days are pictured in a new calendar for Lindale. The village’s Corn Mill and Mill Pond, which have each long since disappeared, are both are brought back to vibrant life in this new calendar entitled ‘Lindale in Times Past’. This beautiful calendar

presents thirteen original artist’s impressions of Lindale’s past, all created in pen and wash, by local artist Vic Greenhalgh. The scenes are attractive and imaginative and each has a short explanation of what is shown. A limited print run of this calendar is on sale at Grange Information Centre and Lindale Stores.

Don’t miss Santa

Well Christmas has definitely arrived in the pages of Grange Now. With numerous events from Christmas tree lighting to the Extravaganza (both on December 3rd) to musical events and of course the panto (December 10th and 11th), Grange will soon be getting into a festive mood. In fact one or two people in the Grange Now office already are. How long until the first tree goes up in a front room and the carols begin on the radio? In this issue you will find more letters than we have ever had before. In fact one or two have had to turn into articles as the letters page was so full. Flooding, parking and more.....Feel free to have your say on a future letters page. We have 2 more editions of Grange Now this year. Our Christmas edition (deadline 18th November) comes out from 1st December. We’ll be running the Christmas gift guide again so please support all the local traders who appear on the centre spread of both this issue and the next, and please remember to shop local. We’ll also be including the traditional Christmas messages page in the next issue, so if you wish to send a Christmas message to one and all, be it friends, family, customers or just everyone (the cost is £30 + vat for each Christmas box), then please send in the details by 18th November. The New Year’s issue comes out from 29th December and please note the slightly earlier deadline of Tuesday 13th December. I hope you enjoy reading this jam packed issue and thank you to all the contributors who send in items for the paper and of course to Sarah, Sharon, Glenn and all at Grange Now for the huge effort needed to make it happen. Stay safe on bonfire night.

Grange Town Council

TOWN CLOCK: Now working

Professional probate advice available locally The death of a relative is a very upsetting and stressful time. There are many issues to sort out when somebody dies and it can be an overwhelming experience. Our role is to deal with the taxation and legal issues in a calm and efficient way, minimising stress and worry. We understand that administering an estate is not a commercial transaction and that a practical and sensitive approach is required. Our experienced team are here to help you as little or as much as you require, whether that is dealing with the administration from start to finish or simply dealing with the probate application. We know that the costs may be a concern and we will never charge you a percentage of the free initial free consultation initial consultation value of the estate. Our realistic fees are clear fixed fees fixed fees from the outset and we aim to offer fixed fees home home visits available visits available where appropriate.

All Councillors attended the meeting on 10th October. Following the multi-agency meeting with residents of Windermere Road, District Councillor Eric Morrell reported back with the following information: SLDC’s part: The scheme, which is now agreed, falls into two parts. North of Lindale Road (from the Booths site and up Windermere Road) work will be funded by Booths. From Lindale Road via the Ornamental Pond and into the sea, the Environment Agency will fund the work, and the main current constraint is that the EA does not yet have its funding in place. SLDC is the planning

authority and will not agree to plans for work north of Lindale Road until that funding is secure. If this work were undertaken without the work on channels into the sea, there would be an increased risk of flooding around the Ornamental Gardens and Main Street car-park. It is hoped that agreement on the whole scheme will be reached before too long. Meanwhile it is very helpful that Cumbria County Council and the Environment Agency have agreed to clear drains and channels up Windermere Road to decrease risk to houses there. It was also resolved to: Fund wall top planting at the Ornamental Gardens at a cost of £1500; Cllr Hathorn is getting quote for the resurfacing of the basketball court on the prom. GTC resolved to allocate £10,000 towards the cost; The Council also resolved to allocate £5,000 towards the Yewtree Play Project. Next meeting: Monday 14th November, 7pm at Victoria Hall.

Service of Remembrance

The service will be held in St. Paul’s Church on Sunday 13th November at 2pm (Standard and Wreath Bearers please assemble at 1.45pm). The service will be followed by a parade to the war memorial, led by members of Flookburgh Band, for the laying of the wreaths before returning to Victoria Hall for refreshments. There will also be a short Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Friday 11th November at 10.50am.

Staff give their tips to Poppy Appeal

The staff at The Crown at High Newton have decided to donate a month’s worth of tips to this year’s poppy appeal. The appeal will run until 11th November 2016. They aim to raise £1000.

Parking in Grange - your reaction

Last month [October p.6] we published an article about parking in Grange. Dozens of motorists received a parking ticket on Wednesday 31st August, many of whom are those who work in local shops and businesses in Grange. A lot of people got in touch to say they agreed with the article and put forward suggestions of what could be done to help alleviate the situation. The most popular comment being to give local workers a pass to park in any of the car parks for £1.20 per day. On the other side of the argument, there was one letter in agreement with the ‘yellow peril’ and in the interests of fair play we shall print that letter and one with a more positive approach. At Grange Town Council’s monthly meeting on 10th October, local PCSO, Howard Firth, informed the Councillors that a parking warden would now visit the town 2 to 3 times a month.

So the yellow peril arrived in force on 31st August , NOT BEFORE TIME. if local people and shopworkers are parking all day in restricted spaces then they should be ashamed of themselves.

t the I am writing to express my concern abou parking situation in the town. has The presence of traffic wardens in the area is it ciate appre I while and ly, atical risen dram ate important to ensure dangerous and inconsider hitting is this that s seem it with, dealt is parking those people that work in the town centre and can’t afford the very high parking fees in the town’s car parks. lent The £1.20 per day at Berners car park is excel many for priate appro not is park car this but people that work in the town. I am constantly amazed at the amo seem unable to walk further than unt of car owners who a few yards to do their shopping, visit an ATM or con duct any other business . Is Berners at £1.20 a day really that far from town or is £480 a year for the train station car par k to much. I was paying similar in the last century when working in Manchester. Also don’t business people rea lise how much business they are losing by taking up spaces all day thereby stopping prospective customers access ing their establishments, from what I see it is mainly an issu e on main street, I have actually seen drivers just stop and get out of their cars when there is a parking space within 20 yards. There is also short term parking on Kents Bank Road car park at a fair price.

The able bodied people of Gra nge should be ashamed of themselves, but the attitude see ms to be “well they do it why shouldn’t I” and to those people seen rushing out of shops to warn other law breakers to mov e their vehicles SHAME ON YOU. This is an ongoing problem and will not go away until the local council gets a proper grip of the situation. It has gon e on for too long and if left unchec ked will only get worse So does this mean Grange is full of petty criminals with no regard to the law, YES IS THE ANSWER David Phelan

Abolition of Slavery display Soroptimist International of Grange over Sands are holding a display in Grange Library from 30th November to 7th December to raise awareness of slavery and people trafficking, its prevalence and the many forms it takes. The United Nations has designated Friday 2nd December as the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Last year, a staggering 45 million people worldwide, and 13,000 individuals in the UK, were estimated to be victims of this vile practice. Only 1 in 5 are identified as victims of Modern Day Slavery, the rest remain hidden from view and suffer alone. The focus of the International ‘Abolish Slavery’ Day is on the need to eradicate trafficking, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage and forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict. Around 1.3 detected victims of slavery across the globe are children.

Grange now | NOVEMBER 2016 - Next deadline 18th NOVEMBER

Grange Soroptimists’ Library display will demonstrate this issue is closer to home than we may realise and will show how we might identify what are termed ‘red light’ signs, possibly indicating someone is being held against their will. The display will also highlight what action we can take both home and abroad. A key driver for slavery and trafficking is the economic reward reaped from these practices. Many of our everyday purchases have been produced using slave-forced or child labour. These include clothing, chocolate, soft drinks and electrical goods to name a few. Being able to boycott these goods is something we can all do. There are many organisations and campaigns working on beating modern day slavery and would welcome support in eradicating this inhumane practice. Make a note of the Display date (30th November to 7th December) and do go along to learn how we can all help to this end.

Morgan fulfils long held ambition From a young age, Allithwaite lad, Morgan Carroll’s ambition was to join the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer and, having researched the prestigious Welbeck Defence sixth form Academy, he started the long process of application. The sixteen year old first had to undergo initial fitness and psychometric tests [tests designed to measure candidates’ suitability for a role based on the required personality characteristics and aptitude (or cognitive abilities)] at the recruitment Navy office in Preston, and then after a lengthy interview process, he was put forward to sit a two day Admiralty board at Gosport. Much to the family’s delight, Morgan was successful and was offered a conditional place at Welbeck subject to his GCSE grades. A pupil at Cartmel Priory, he achieved 10 passes and his former Headteacher, Dr Williams told Grange Now: “I was delighted that Morgan was able to gain a place at Welbeck College. He will, I am sure, rise

Welbeck is a specialised Defence Academy sponsored by the MOD with the sole purpose of training future leaders for the UK Defence forces. His A levels will be tailored to specific Royal Navy Requirements.

The second stage will be to study at degree level which will be Navy sponsored before finally entering into his Officer training at Dartmouth. This whole process takes 7 years, and then he will pass out as a Commissioned Officer.”

Mum, Julia, told Grange Now: “After starting college in September [2016], he has almost completed his first half term and I’m delighted to say that it is everything he hoped it would be. He gets every opportunity to develop his skills and love of football (he played for the Grange under sixteens before he left). He also is a keen guitarist and music is very much encouraged at the

“As for boarding school, Morgan has matured in such a short time and is surrounded by likeminded students - as he says, we have little time to think about being homesick! Grange Now would like to wish Morgan every success in his chosen career.

Government grant pays for broadband installation If you don’t have access to broadband speeds of more than 2Meg you may qualify for a grant covering the cost of broadband installation under a Government scheme.

The scheme pays for residents and businesses to have a broadband installation by an approved supplier and Kendal-based Kencomp Internet is one of the approved suppliers for Cumbria.

Kencomp specialises in providing broadband to towns and rural communities throughout Cumbria using microwave radio technology which is especially suitable for this purpose. It also means the speed you get is a lot faster than most local phone broadband. If you’d like faster broadband and want further details of the Grant Scheme call 01539 898145 or email sales@kencomp.net

Investment Matters By Andrew Troughton APFS

With the introduction of new tax allowances in the 2016 Budget, it is important that individuals look to make use of all their allowances.

tax allowances. The new dividend allowance creates an opportunity for virtually tax free saving by building up an investment portfolio where income and gains can be ‘managed out’ by using the respective allowances. Don’t waste allowances - tax allowances not fully used annually will go to waste. This could mean that profits build up, and when taken may only benefit from a single year’s allowances. Efficient tax planning should be a constant process. It doesn’t end once the initial investment wrapper is chosen, utilising available allowances each year can limit future tax payable. Working with a Financial Planner will help you utilise the available tax allowances and ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. “ We are thrilled with the results of our

fabulous new kitchen, it now has the welcoming, family atmosphere we wanted to achieve and is the heart of our home. Thank you for all your efforts, patience and good humour throughout.

Tax incentivised, tax free, or potentially tax free – some of the savings choices on offer. Failing to make the most of these will mean individuals may pay unnecessary tax on their income and savings. But saving into the right tax wrappers at the right time, and crucially in the right order, can limit the tax you might pay. The introduction of new tax free allowances means there is now greater scope to save and pay little or no tax on those savings. Tax incentivised savings such as pensions, and tax free wrappers such as ISAs, are clearly more preferable than savings which are potentially taxable. But pensions and ISAs come with a savings cap. The tax relief on pensions funding is controlled by earnings, the annual allowance and lifetime allowance. And there is a maximum subscription limit of £15,240 (rising to £20,000 from 2017/18) on ISA saving. Once these pots have been maximised it may still be possible to achieve similar tax efficient returns on investment portfolios, with a little bit of careful management of the

Lloyd Group

Volunteers win excellence award Just one year in and the newly formed Friends of Kents Bank Station & Foreshore have already received their first award. The dedicated band of volunteers spent the year digging deep (literally) and cleared away weeds, rubbish and debris before replanting, tidying, painting and restoring Kents Bank Station and grounds to the beautiful station it is today.

On arrival at Lloyd South Lakes you will find a beautiful new showroom set in stunning countryside with plenty of space making it easy to explore the full range of MINIs which are available including the new Lloyd Exclusive, Black Edition. The local MINI Centre is easy to find, situated in Lindale just 10 minutes from Newby Bridge, making it ideally placed for test drives, with minimal traffic and a variety of driving roads right on the doorstep. The friendly and professional showroom has its own dedicated MINI team who are always on hand to help. Open 7 days a week customers are always welcome to pop in for a coffee, take a test drive and enquire about the latest offers. The new extension also made room for a dedicated indoor hand over bay allowing the team to take all the time needed to explain all the latest technologies and features included with your new MINI, safe in the knowledge that the British weather won’t cut this short.

Along with help from Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), to whom the group is now affiliated, Grange-overSands Town Council (GTC) and The Bay Villa Trust they are once again providing a peaceful

sheltered place where people can sit (benches were restored courtesy of GTC) and enjoy the views across Morecambe Bay. A panorama map, financed by a grant from The Bay Villa Trust, has been placed near the top of the Kents Bank slipway and it identifies distinctive Morecambe Bay landmarks that can be seen from the foreshore. At the national ACoRP Award Ceremony on 29th September it was announced that the Friends of Kents Bank Station & Foreshore had achieved a Certificate of Excellence Bronze Award in the ‘It’s Your Station category’.

New ticket vending machines Val Kennedy, Chairman of Friends of Kents Bank Station & Foreshore, told Grange Now about exciting new changes for small stations.

Jim Trotman, Community Rail Partnership Officer for the Furness and Lakes Lines said at the recent ACoRP ceremony that all small stations on the Furness line, including Kents Bank, are scheduled to have new ticket vending machines, CCTV, Help Points with face to face contact and real time Customer Information Screens installed during the next twelve months. He also said that from December 2017 there should be eight through trains daily from Barrowin-Furness to Manchester airport. Most of these will be fast trains and will not be scheduled to stop at small stations so passengers will need to travel to Grange-over-Sands station to join trains for Manchester airport. ACoRP are also lobbying the relevant authorities to try and persuade them to provide airport train services for stations such as Kents Bank from 2018 onwards.

The group would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and also Jim Trotman, the Community Rail Partnership Officer for the Furness and Lakes Lines, without whose help has been invaluable.

The 9.20am Kents Bank to Preston is still running Last month, Grange Now published an article about changes to the weekday train times to Preston.

What we failed to make clear was the fact that the particular times stated in the article have not been included in the latest timetable. As a reminder they are:

The Monday to Friday train to Preston, previously shown as calling at Grange at 09.51, now departs

at 09.24 and calls additionally at Kents Bank at 09.20. The train has recently been increased to three carriages to provide additional seating capacity. The above is not shown in the latest timetable which you can get at manned stations.

Apologies for any confusion caused, and thanks to Chris Wright of Lakeland Visitours who queried the timetable.

The new showroom hasn’t changed the ethos at the heart of the Lloyd Motor Group. The finest customer service with a local touch is at the heart of the Lloyd philosophy, which is loved by customers old and new alike.

Sharing a cuppa for Macmillan Bobs Hair & Beauty Alison and staff said the salon was ‘fit to burst’ all day, not just with clients but people who came along just for the Coffee Morning. They raised an amazing £330.

Many people in the area came together to share a cuppa, and raise a pound or two, for the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’. Fundraisers included: Cartmel Priory School Pupils and parents baked up a fine array of treats and their well-attended coffee morning raised a wonderful £510.44.

Clare House Once again, Andrew and Louise rose to the challenge and despite horrendous weather and holding their event on the same day at County Show! they still managed to raise over £500 - a fantastic achievement.

Witherslack Community Shop The mainly ‘volunteer run’ shop and cafe in Witherslack held their own Coffee Morning and made an incredible £365.

In all, the five coffee mornings mentioned above raised over £2,200 which is a great result for a very worthy cause. Everyone mentioned above would like to say a heartfelt thanks to everybody who attended, made a cake and gave generously. They couldn’t do it without you.

St Mary’s Church also raised a magnificent amount when they held their coffee morning on Saturday 15th October. Another £513.20 to add to the pot.

Do you need friends at Christmas? Friends at Christmas will be organising their annual Christmas Day lunch again this year. Held on Christmas Day, it is open to anyone in Grange who would otherwise be on their own at Christmas. Invitations will be delivered this month to those who have attended previously, please look out for these and remember to book your place. New members are very welcome to join the event which includes a delicious meal, music and companionship. This event is supported by the community

and businesses of Grange and surrounding area. For further information please call Liz Benson on 33291.

Charity Christmas Fair

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

At the time of going to press there are still some tables left. These are free to local charity groups. Please contact Sally on 015395 32375 if you would like to reserve one. Organisers are also appealing for items suitable for a tombola. If you have anything that you wish to donate please take them to the Victoria Hall by the end of November.

The campaign runs from November 1 – 12th and you can drop your shoebox, together with your £2 donation, at the Grange Now Office, Bay Search and Rescue Shop or Grange Information Centre. There are other places too.

This year, the Charity Christmas Fair will take place on the same day as the Christmas Extravaganza, Saturday 3rd December, and will be open from 10am - 2pm.

Filling a shoebox for a child may well be the only gift they receive this year. For full details of what to include in your shoebox please take a look at the website.

Grange Over Sands

The annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will take place on Saturday 3rd December with carols at 6pm followed by the tree lighting at 6.30pm. Soon after, Santa himself will arrive on his sleigh to give out treats to the children. This is the 70th year that this community event has taken place and to celebrate Johnstons the Jewellers & Toyshop are offering a £50 gift voucher, to spend in their shop, as a prize. All you need to do is guess how many lights there are on the Grange Christmas tree in the Ornamental Gardens. Cost is 50p per entry and extra forms are available from Johnstons the Jewellers but entry forms will also be distributed through schools.

FOOD & DRINK

Low sizergh mincemeat On 25 December 1662, Samuel Pepys described his Christmas feast as including a mince pie. Three and a half centuries later the enthusiasm for these little treats remains, although 17th century mince pies were in fact savoury and filled with meat and beef suet rich and fruity but not at all sweet, and quite unsuited to tea time. The Low Sizergh kitchen is in ‘modern’ mincemeat mode as demand for our homemade mince pies begins to grow. There’s no sign of meat or beef suet but there’s much appreciation for the stars of our recipe: the apples, which have recently been picked from our orchards. Varieties include Beauty of Moray (1883), White Melrose (1831) and Galloway Pippin, which is a dualpurpose apple, although we think its merits as a cooker outweigh its attractions as an eater. Ingredients 250g raisins 375g currants 100ml brandy Zest of half a lemon 150g butter, chilled & grated 250g dark brown sugar 85g chopped mixed peel ½ small nutmeg, grated 200g Low Sizergh apples, peeled & grated Method Soak the raisins and currants on the brandy and lemon juice for 1 hour until plumped up, then drain and set the brandy aside. Mix all the ingredients together in the order given. Once everything is well mixed, pour in the brandy. Store in containers in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, or decant directly in to sterilised jars.

Don’t forget your Bonfire BANGERS! “Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason, should ever be forgot” …go the lyrics to that famous English rhyme. Bonfire Night is an evocative event in the British calendar, and the time when people start to embrace warming winter food. Although we never need an excuse, with British Sausage Week taking place during the same week as Halloween and Bonfire Night, we are launching some spooky and spicy seasonal specialities…

llThe seriously hot Vampire Slayer Sausage made with pork sausage meat, chilli & garlic… try it if you dare! llSpiced Pumpkin Sausage made with pork sausage meat and seasonal curried pumpkin llSticky Toffee Sausage made with the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding sauce… they’re delicious! These varieties will all be available from Monday 31st October until Saturday 5th November on Special Offer: Just £4 per pack or 3 packs for £10!

Whether eaten in buns on Bonfire Night or added to a delicious warming casserole, the humble sausage is hard to beat! We even have FREE Sausage Recipe booklets available in store to inspire you, so come on down, pick up your favourite variety and get creative in the kitchen. If you can, send a photo of your favourite home-made sausage dish to our facebook page. And don’t forget… to look out for our 2016 Christmas Brochures - pick up your copy from the shop!

NATURE & GARDENING

t c e f r e P The

Plot

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

November, it’s winter isn’t it? Probably freezing cold and wet, so you’re going to need to try and keep warm and there’s a few ways to do it whilst you’re at your allotment, after you’ve giddily legged it down there, keen to crack on, that is.

Fortunately bonfires are all the rage this month. Double check the terms and conditions of your allotment and consider your neighbours before lighting one. It might be a good idea to try and contain it, those

incinerators that look like old dustbins with holes in the sides are ideal for the job. Burn anything that has shown signs of disease or blight, old pea sticks and old dead brassicas so they don’t harbour diseases or pests through the winter watch out for garden canes as they can make a heart stopping crack when you burn them. Never burn plastics or treated timber An alternative way to keep warm is to get a bit physical, dig over any vacant beds that need it and turn your compost heap. Give the compost bin a couple of whacks before you start, to send any rats packing so you don’t end up going all gooey, squealing and running about the place when one scampers across your welly later. Keep on weeding! Weeds are the last things stop growing and the first to start so

it’s a good opportunity to get ahead, digging out pernicious weeds such as dandelions or docks before the roots get down too deep.

If you’ve been inundated with leaves gather them up to make leaf mould, if you haven’t got space for a dedicated heap or bin you can pop them in black bin bags and bayonet them a couple of times with a garden fork you can stack these wherever you have a little space and in a year’s time you should have a usable mulch. If you are growing Brussels sprouts pick the largest ones from the bottom and remove dead or yellowing leaves, if you’ve not netted them previously it might be worth it now to protect them from hungry pigeons and save as many as possible for next month!

Brown Robin nature reserve A typical season on the reserve, if not a little quiet.

Work undertaken started early with scrub clearance on Blawith bank to stop them encroaching too much on the wild flora, and we also tackled thistle in the park fields using scythes, as well as keeping the footpaths open. Early spring saw lots of Hawfinch with a flock of 17 passing through, but a total of 60 were noted up until about May. The top field had another good season with expanding wild flowers and good numbers of butterflies and six spot burnet moths. We had a Willow warbler singing, which doesn’t sound unusual, but it’s the only one I have ever heard or seen on the reserve. We also had a visit from a Red kite

about Grange. This relates to other sightings in Grange and surrounding area too.

We have had reports of a Red squirrel in town too, which is very encouraging and partly due to vigilant residents and Westmoreland Reds help. But please keep a look out and report them if you see them. and discovered a new rare Whitebeam tree. I have been trying to get the grazing right for the waxcap grassland, so we borrowed a few sheep for a few weeks, and it has worked quite well, so if you visit the reserve look out for them. Please take pictures of them and share on the Facebook group Wild

We shall hopefully be coppicing again this year and indeed expanding the coppice. If you are interested in helping out please let us know, you will learn some traditional skills and even take a few bean poles or pea sticks home. Full training and tools are provided. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers that helped over the season. Thank you, Tony.

Another award for Cedric

Cedric Robinson MBE, told Grange Now that he thought he had received all the awards he going to get but was surprised and delighted to receive another honour recently, when he was recognised for his contribution to wildlife.

Anne Powell, Chairman of Cumbria Wildlife Trust, presented Cedric with a Gold Badger’s Paw Award for his longstanding support for the wildlife of Morecambe Bay and for the Trust. Speaking at the ceremony, Cedric said: “This was a lovely surprise – I’ve had a number of awards over the years but didn’t expect any more! I love the sands and I enjoy meeting people year after year. I now have two very good helpers, as I’m not getting any younger, but I’ve never felt my age! We do well to run as many walks as we do, including for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and I’m looking forward to coming back for another one next year!” Alongside Cedric, a further nine local people were honoured for their dedication to wildlife at the event which was held at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Annual Conference. They were recognised for showing outstanding commitment to the charity in a variety of ways, including recording plant species, helping to create new reserves, and for longstanding volunteering for one of the Trust’s many local groups. The following people received awards: Maggie Acomb, Robin Corner, Christine Davidson, Tina Galloway, Ian Greg, John Grey, Jan McArthur, Frank Mawby and Seb Sillitoe.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust has been working with Cedric Robinson to offer Cross Bay Walks since 2002. Read about the latest walk on the Cumbria Wildlife website.

Give the dog a bone Lambert Pets Supplies are collecting donations for Animal Rescue Cumbria The Wainwright Centre. The centre is very grateful to receive donations of cat & dog food, cat litter, cat & dog toys & treats. There are so many animals in need of rehoming and very little funds available for our local centres so it means so much to animals in the centres to receive this help.

Ground staff win big at the races The dedicated ground staff at Cartmel have been well rewarded for their efforts this year when they were announced as the winners of the Jumps Track ‘Groundstaff of the Year’ category, and have also been nominated for the Overall ‘Groundstaff of the Year’ Award.

Not satisfied with just one glowing accolade, Cartmel Racecourse also found themselves listed as finalists in the Showcase Awards ‘Events’ category, for the two music concerts held last summer. With headline performances by Simply Red and Jools Holland, Cartmel Racecourse became the Glastonbury of Cartmel, attracting

bumper crowds to the village and drawing new customers to the racecourse. The overall awards will be announced at the RCA Showcase Awards Dinner in November. Good luck guys from us all at Grange Now.

News from across the pond Grange duck pond that is. A total of 23 new ducks have been introduced this year; some to replace ducks lost to predators and old age, others to broaden the overall attraction of the pond. The total cost of this was £1205 which came from the donation box (this can be found adjacent to the identification board).

A total of 82 eggs were produced by the ducks in the nest boxes, but due to predatory gulls, only 9 ducklings survived to adulthood. The Bar-headed geese produced, in total, 28 eggs. In order to prevent an increase in the geese population these were made infertile. Doris, with a little help from Boris, produced 2 clutches. Sadly, the first batch were taken by the gulls, but the second hatching produced 11 chicks. These were immediately removed from the pond, along with Doris, to the safekeeping

of a lady from Lindale. On the first attempt to return Doris and 4 ducklings to the pond ended when Doris totally ignored her offspring this resulted in a rescue of 3 ducklings and the loss of one. A second attempt also ended in failure, and they have now been rehomed to a smallholding just outside Kendal. Boris and Doris remain on the pond. New ducks on the pond include: 2 Baikal Teals, 1 Manderin, 4 Carolinas, 2 Pintails, 1 Hooded Merganser, 1 Eider, 1 Shoveler, 4 Ringed Teals, 2 European Green Winged Teals, 2 Red Crested Pochard, 2 European Wigeons.

ART & MUSIC

Whose foot will fit the dainty slipper? As many try to squeeze their foot into the tiny glass slipper, there will doubtless be cries of ‘should’ve gone to Lancasters!’

We are, of course, talking about Cinderella, which is the panto the wonderfully talented Youth of Grange Operatic Society will entertain you with this Christmas. Rehearsals are underway and director, Jean Malkin, told Grange Now: “the audience will be entranced by the marvellous transformation of the pumpkin to coach and rags to ball gown scenes.”

Forty children, aged from 7 - 17 will grace the stage and Molly Cowley (star of ;’Annie’) shines in the lead role. Her handsome Prince (Jessica Walmsley) and dashing valet Dandini (Martha Rand) will attempt to find who the lost slipper fits. It’s certainly not the hilariously funny Ugly Sisters, Grizelda (James Mason) or Gertrude (Thomas Kidd). These two young men were such a big hit in ‘Annie’ and it’s great to see them playing an entirely different role.

The much acclaimed Amy Shepherd, aided and abetted by Jackson Taylor Smith, are funnily formidable in their parts, The Baroness and The Baron as are the Comic Brokers Men - Reece Carter, Emily-Kate Unsworth, Max Burrow and Tate Johnson who try to knock down Hardship Hall, their castle home. Buttons (Tom Shepherd), another young player of note, steals the show with some of his comic lines and the beautiful fairy godmother (Faye Hill) weaves her magic

Grange Drama heads towards its 70th anniversary Two very well-known plays will be brought to the fore during Grange Drama’s forthcoming open readings. The first, on Thursday 3rd November, is Ronald Harwood’s Quartet, which recently enjoyed great success in the cinema. Ken Smyth will take the ‘director’s chair’ for the evening. The play, which is both poignant and funny, is set in a home for retired opera singers, many of whom still want to entertain. An annual concert is planned in celebration of Verdi’s birthday. Imagine the setting of the play, a music room and terrace, where, as they say, the show must go on! The second open reading, which will take place on Thursday 24th November, will be The Thirty Nine Steps, an adaptation of John Buchan’s novel. The script used for the open reading is the stage version and has a cast of 4 actors

playing 130 characters in 100 minutes and Jim Robson’s enthusiasm is sure to carry everyone along. He is in the director’s chair for the night and no doubt will relate being a member of the audience at the Theatre by the Lake where it has been staged. Others may talk of connections with the professional touring production. All open play readings begin at 7.30pm in Grange Institute, Main Street and up to date information can be found on the website. Everyone is welcome to come along. There is no charge and the kettle is always on and you don’t have to read a part you can just enjoy listening to those who do. Next year, Grange Drama celebrates its 70th anniversary - watch out for news of their Summer and Autumn Productions.

wand to ensure Cinderella does go to the ball.

With pantomime horse (Jake Wilson and Lewi Sharp), scary ghost (Euan Adams) and Izzy Shires as the Chamberlain, this show is definitely not to be missed.

The panto will have two matinees, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December and one evening performance on 10th December in the Victoria Hall. Book your tickets from 1st November at Grange Information Centre.

Toe tapping fun at the ceilidh

On Thursday 17th November, why not go along and enjoy a night of dancing, or even just tap your toe along to the music of The Sands Band led by Dave Rogers who is also an experienced caller. The Ceilidh has been organised by the Friends of Kents Bank Station and Foreshore to raise funds to maintain and enhance the station and foreshore. Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank. The fun starts at 7pm and there will also be a raffle and refreshments. Tickets: in advance £8 individual, £15 family - or £10 each on the door. Telephone: 36763 or 34001 or collect from the Beach Hut Gallery at Kents Bank Station.

Flookburgh band play Robbie and more On Saturday 12th November, the ever popular Flookburgh Band will play ‘something for everyone’ at their concert in Flookburgh Church. The programme will contain classic songs from Abba, Robbie Williams, the film ‘Grease’ and many more. Children are very welcome and they can happily sing along for free. Adult admission is a modest £7 which includes refreshments. The fun starts at 6.30pm.

The hugely popular Annual Carol Concert will this year be held on Saturday 17th December, as always in Victoria Hall. The concert will commence at 7.30pm.

Taffy Thomas, MBE, a patron of the Society for Storytelling will delight children, young and old, with a new collection of wonderful stories and tales in his latest book, Lakeland Folk Tales for Children. The book has been imaginatively illustrated by a young Cumbrian artist, Steven Gregg. Steven was born in the Lake District and currently lives in Windermere. Taffy, who has lived in Grasmere for over 30 years, has a repertoire of over 300 tales and storyteller, Giles Abbot, once said: “when Taffy goes it will be like a library burning down.”

A former literature and drama teacher, Taffy’s life changed when, aged just 36, he suffered a major stroke. He used storytelling as self-imposed speech therapy, and this led to

Kirsten told Grange Now: “The Feel Good Singalong is open to all voices, even those that think they can’t sing. The group welcomes people of all ages, health and state of mind. There is no pressure to sound a certain way, the sessions are light hearted, easy going and relaxed. SCHOOL REPORT

Cartmel Priory School’s 58th Annual Speech Night

Dr Michelle Mellis, Senior Lecturer, Sport & Exercise Physiology, Leeds Beckett University, and past pupil (between 1993-1998), was guest speaker at an excellent evening of celebration. The 2016 Year 11 Leavers returned to school to receive GCSE Certificates and a range of other awards. These included, for example, Steven Nicholson receiving the Canon Thompson Cup awarded to the scholar who has shown the most outstanding achievement in academic work (achieving 7 A* and 3 A grades in his GCSEs), Isabelle Wattam receiving The Edna Martland Award presented to the outstanding all-round pupil, Saskia Read receiving the H Watson Rose Bowl Low Resolution for services to school, Lucia Harrington being awarded the William Wilson Memorial Student Prize, nominated by her Year 11 peers to name but a few. Current pupils also received awards for attainment and progress, 100% attendance and the John Muir Explorer Award. For the first time ‘The Robin Webster Prize’ was awarded to Georgia C. Robin started teaching at Cartmel Priory School in 1976, supporting the school for 40 years. His daughter, Claire, gave a very Client Proof - Low Resolution moving speech to introduce the new award. Robin is held in very high regard and

Allithwaite Primary October at Allithwaite CE Primary has seen a focus on our Church and cluster links as well as a lot of sports.

We are beginning each new school week with energy and enthusiasm at our Monday morning services at St Mary’s led by Rev Rach. We have focused on our friendship value and there has been a lot of singing and dancing to wake us up! The Eagle Owls enjoyed a fantastic day at Cartmel Priory, participating in a wide variety of activities and reflection. The volunteers worked brilliantly with the children, who gained a great deal from the experience.

sadly missed by our school community.

After presenting the awards, Dr Mellis gave an inspirational speech covering some personal highlights from her life and giving her ‘top tips’ for students. These included encouraging pupils to take care of their health, embrace their individuality, work hard and play hard, take all opportunities that present themselves and build a career in a job they love, even if it takes a while to get there. Dr Williams, Headteacher, provided an overview of pupil successes in 2015/2016, including reflecting on the

Cartmel Primary This term has seen the introduction of guitar and ukulele lessons in school with a third of the school taking up one of the instruments and Years 5 and 6 are learning the flute.

Along with our ‘Young Voices Sing’ club and singing workshops with Alison Adam, ensure that music plays a large part in Cartmel life. Year 2s participated in a multiskills session at Cartmel Priory and some Class 3 children took part in Sports Hall Athletics. The ongoing development of our outdoor area has caused much excitement. We had another community Groundforce Day in September to prepare the area for the delivery of our new school boat. This is already proving very popular for creative play, with the children diving in

Term is well underway and we have some really exciting topic work and special events happening including an art project called ‘Handmade herd’ with Anne Marie Quinn. Our sheep will form part of a flock of 1000, which will be displayed outside Abbot Hall Museum as part of the Kendal Wool Gathering later this month. Year 5 and 6 pupils are performing ‘Joseph’, along with children from other schools in the area as part of the Mary Wakefield music festival. Years 2 and 3 have had their artwork displayed as part of Comic Art festival. We are very pleased to have achieved a Silver School Games Mark. The School

So far this term the children have been focusing on colours and more recently, the signs of Autumn. They are looking forward to a visit to Cartmel Woods to observe the Autumnal changes. Following the success of the move, the nursery will be opening for an extra session on Monday mornings after half term.

We were very excited to receive an email from Grange Rotary informing us that following on from the dictionary competition earlier this year a pupil from Flookburgh had won 1st prize. We were very proud to announce the news to Lena Iwanicki in our celebration assembly – well done Lena your email entry was excellent! However if things aren’t moving or you feel you are not receiving the correct service it is always best to review your options and move to a different agent if you feel the need. Many of our past clients have found just this. After being listed with a local competitor for 18 months they had made no progress on the sale of their home. They came to Poole Townsend for a valuation at the beginning of May 2016 and asked us to market their property. On the first day er put the property to market we secured two viewing bookings and the offer was made on the monday and sale agree. A total of 4 days to sale with Poole Townsend. Dear Editor, I would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support in making Nick’s last service so memorable. Well over 300 people attended and those who stayed for the tributes were ‘blown away’. It was wonderful to hear so many tributes from different areas of his life and leadership. I think we will all remember the one that ended so emotionally ‘You are a good man’. We were amazed that so many clergy attended, those who have known him in different roles within the diocese, those who have retired and returned to support him, and those

whose lives he has influenced and touched. So many thanks go to so many people for food, drink, music, singing, giving lifts, loaning glasses, contributions to his gift (£1000 collected)... and much much more. He also takes many gifts and cards from individuals and other organisations, including schools and governors, he led and supported. As is the norm at St Paul’s, for special services, the offertory always goes to charity: the generous giving during the offertory will mean that we can send a substantial cheque of almost £600 to the Youth Trust, an important part of the ministry and mission of

Dear Editor I would like to respond to the letter from J Preston in the October Grange Now which stated that “the Library has stopped opening on Saturdays.” I would just like to report that Grange Library is open on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm each week and everyone is welcome to come along to confirm that is the case! Lyn Prescott, Grange Library.

Dear Editor, It is disappointing the item on page 6 (top right) of the October issue did not acknowledge the contributions made to the positive appearance Telephone – of our town by the Civic Society’s volunteer groups; the Bloom Group and the Promenade Gardeners. The current and former members of these two teams have given many hours of their time to the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors over many years.

A while ago I attended a meeting at the Victoria Hall which Grange council called because SLDC is going to withdraw funding for the building in a few years’ time. The meeting looked at ways of raising the shortfall that will be needed. Might I suggest the first £10,000 comes from not giving £10,000 to SLDC to do things that SLDC should be doing!

We had not seen this friend, now in her 80’s, for more than 35 years, and the real loss in the matter is that we had taken about 6 photos of her, which will not be backed up to the Cloud on that day.

Grange has a proud history of volunteers doing work around the town which we all appreciate. The Prom Gardeners do us all proud with the work they do and in my opinion the prom looks magnificent. However, this suggestion is not about people volunteering to do ‘extra’ work it’s about Grange Town Council volunteering to give SLDC £10,000 of our money to do what SLDC should already be doing.

Dear Editor, I write to update your readers about two of the issues for which SLDC carries responsibility and which are of real concern to us here in Grange. First, SLDC recently updated its housing policy for the South Lakeland area as a whole. SLDC remains firmly committed to increasing the stock of affordable homes both for rent and for sale, and I know that many people in Grange strongly support that

aim. This specifically includes the intentions to convert unused non-residential properties in town centres into new affordable homes to rent, to encourage self-build homes, and to provide advice and initiatives to help younger and first-time buyers. SLDC is also concerned about the number of long-term empty homes in the area. [Councillor Morrell also wrote about the recent Windermere Road multiagency flooding meeting and you will find this on page 4]

We really appreciated the publicity Grange Now gave the RNLI “La Serenata” concert and this is just to say that the evening was very successful with delightful music from the talented trio and an excellent buffet supper. The programme covered a wide range from opera to songs from musical shows and

Dear Editor, I was reading Grange Now and saw a letter complaining about a pedestrian obstructing a cyclist on the Promenade. I assume the cyclist was referring to me and I would like to put the record straight.

I am stone deaf in one ear and have a basic hearing aid. I did not hear the cyclist coming up behind along the narrow section of the Promenade ringing his bell and was unaware I obstructed any passing. I was very startled when he cycled passed me, did make a comment but only partly heard a shouted reply, something like “get a life”. I had no view of cyclists on the Promenade until this incident, now I would like to point out to some of them especially when coming

Dear Editor,

This aggressive and invasive non native species is a notifiable plant. The council responded rapidly and have sprayed it twice so far and the obvious growth now appears to be dead. However on the 10th October I took this photo of a new plant growing close to the road. It travels underground and also propagates easily by fragmentation.

MONEY TALK

A Will made by a disabled man in favour of his professional carer has been overturned in the High Court on the grounds that he did not understand it. David Poole was severely injured in an accident in 1985 when he was 24. That accident left him with permanent physical and psychiatric disabilities, for which he received damages of over £1m to pay for his future needs. This is a plant nobody wants to find in their garden. If you come across it you must contact the local council.

The money was managed by a solicitor appointed by the court. David lived with a professional carer, Mark. David made a Will in December 2012, appointing Mark as his executor and leaving him virtually all his money, over £1m.

ended with some English favourites and some audience participation.

David had drafted this Will with no professional help or capacity assessment. David had made a Will the previous February leaving money to charities and his brothers. The brothers challenged the December 2012 Will on the grounds of improper execution; lack of testamentary capacity; lack of knowledge and approval; undue in influence and fraud by Mark.

Elizabeth Carter

The evening raised £593 for the Lifeboats and we are very grateful to all who supported the event and especially to Wendy Sharrock, Charles Edmondson and David Edmonds of La Serenata for giving us such an enjoyable evening. With thanks again and very best wishes, Val Hewitt RNLI Arnside.

up behind pedestrians, not to just barge past. It is a sad fact that some cyclists are becoming aggressive and expect pedestrians to get out of their way. I live in Carnforth and visit my daughter weekly who lives in Grange, she also would like to request those cyclists who speed over the bridges and underpasses without consideration for mothers with children to slow down or even dismount.

The Promenade was a stress free walk where pedestrians and children could spread out and enjoy the environment in safety. Maybe cyclists should consider dismounting and also enjoy it, rather than speeding along, missing the experience and just use it to get from A to B quickly. Joseph, Carnforth.

The judge rejected all the grounds except one. He accepted that Mark could not prove David’s lack of knowledge and approval of the contents of the Will that he signed. The judge noted that Mark had deliberately isolated David and did not explain that the Will revoked gifts in the previous Will to his brothers and some charities. Mark did not read the terms of the Will to David and did not draw David’s attention to the extent of the gift to him. Whose side you are on? The February Will which was reinstated was professionally prepared following a capacity assessment. Each ground on which the later Will was challenged was properly covered and noted to make sure David’s wishes were implemented. DIY Will making can work, but we really would advise against it. You can book a free appointment with a member of our team to discuss yours.

County Matters

At the Multi-Agency flood meeting on the 4th October, when many residents and businesses were present there was a full discussion on the problems relating to Windermere Road and the Ornamental Gardens. The Environment Agency and County Highways made commitments to undertake works to help alleviate problems and as I write this column some have already taken place. A further meeting in December will be held to map progress on these commitments and I will keep all the affected residents and businesses fully informed. The volunteers are now in place at Grange Library and hopefully a new

Mayor’s Report

This month has been a real opportunity to realise what amazing people we have in our town, whatever their age. Earlier in the month, while I was away in Devon, my deputy, Councillor Peter Endsor attended the Lions 17th Charter Lunch. Here he was made very welcome and really enjoyed the opportunity to meet a group of people who work very hard for charity. I gather he also enjoyed a great lunch and a good chat!

I thank all the residents who volunteered and if you feel you could help as well please contact Lyn at the Library. The new road markings on Allithwaite Road coming into the Town are now in place. I hope these will emphasise to motorists the need to reduce speed and keep to the speed limit. If you see any road defects or potholes please ring the Highways Hotline on 0300 303 2992 or report them online at our refreshed web site. www.cumbria. gov.uk

by two talented performers from the school. So, a huge congratulations to everyone in whatever role they appeared and good luck for the future.

Last, but by no means least, was the Annual Volunteers Tea. This is the one time in the year when the Town Council gets a real opportunity to say a massive ‘Thank you’ to all the volunteers who do so much around the town throughout the year. There were getting on for fifty people present and a few folk were unable to attend so it gives you some idea of how many people in the town volunteer for a wide variety of tasks to ensure Grange remains the lovely place it is. May I take this opportunity to say again, ‘THANK YOU’. The town would not be the same without you.

Christmas PARTIES CHRISTMAS DAY IN THE KINGS ARMS

Tim’s Column

I am keeping up my pressure on Northern Rail to reintroduce their discount for students aged 16 or over travelling to school or college by train. As was pointed out last month it is compulsory for children to stay in education until they are 18 and so it is simply unfair that they should have to pay adult fares on train journeys to study when they turn sixteen. It is particularly an issue in our part of the world where you can have to travel quite some distance to get to the place you want to study. The situation faced by parents of older children in Grange and the surrounding area, with these massive hikes in the fares they need to pay each school day, is being replicated on the Lakes Line from Windermere to Oxenholme and so I am hoping that the numbers affected by the two lines will give me a bit more pressure to apply to Northern Rail. I will let you know how I get on but to be honest I am not full of hope for success with this route to achieving a reduction in student train fares. We may need to explore other solutions but we haven’t reached the end

of this particular road yet and it would be great if as many of you as possible could support my petition (just Google Tim Farron Rail Fares Petition and follow the links). On the subject of education I have been pressing the government to be more sensible about the funding they provide Cumbria for children with Special Educational Needs. They are currently basing the money they provide on the 2013 figures for children eligible for this assistance. However, since that time there has been an 80% increase in the numbers of children who are eligible, leaving the county council with a hole in its budget of nearly £6 million. If the Government does not change to base its funding plans on these new figures then the council will need to find this money from somewhere else in its educational budget. That is a large amount of money for them to find suddenly and I am really worried that our children’s education will suffer one way or another. As ever if I can help with these or any other issues then please do get in touch by emailing tim@timfarron.co.uk or calling on 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter. We have filled the last few months with outings, activities and lots of events July After the excitement of our Strawberry Fete, the residents continued their work on the Somme mosaic project. They also started some new projects including creating a cone wreath, preparing abstract pebble art and pressing fresh flowers.

Despite the poor weather this month, we still managed to find time for visits to Grange Park and the Prom and there is always time for some coffee and cake at local cafes. We welcomed the talented South Cumbria Retirement Band and enjoyed their music whilst sitting out in the glorious sunshine.

August

The Olympics came to The Old Vicarage! We enjoyed watching the glory, the excitement and the medals. As well as watching, we had our own Olympics with competitions in Scrabble, Connect 4, Skittles, Crochet, Quoits and an Olympic Quiz. We had medals for the winners and the honours were spread around.

Our outings continued with more trips to Grange, as well as trips further afield to the Miniature Village in Flookburgh, the Candle Factory in Lindal and Holker Hall.

Jean Marks, our accomplished accordion player also visited and her skill made us all want to learn how to play the accordion. We had a shopping day when Bon Marche visited. Our residents enjoyed trying on and purchasing new clothes. Does it count as baking if you make ice cream? Anyway, we made strawberry, banana, chocolate chip and mint - they were all delicious.

The Vicarage Voices choir returned after a few weeks absence and the good weather meant we could sit in the garden and sing together.

Eating our delicious barbeque

We had a barbeque at The Old Vicarage and invited friends and family for burgers and wine. A great day – definitely to be repeated.

Enjoying the gardens at Holker Hall. South Cumbria Retirement Band in full swing

September

A new month means new craft projects for our residents - turning the pressed flowers into coasters, making tissue lanterns, hanging mason jars and starting a banner for our September Coffee Morning.

There was also time for gardening and planting the flowers we had grown from seeds in the gardens.

Forthcoming Events Afternoon Tea at Netherwood Hotel Low Sizergh Barn Visit

Our residents finished their banner for our Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning and the event was a great success, raising £175. The residents also arranged several vases of fresh flowers for the event which were displayed throughout the Old Vicarage.

We had a musical visit from Judith Poole and her team of skilled young musicians. Every year she teaches new pupils and our residents love hearing their progress. Richard Bromley, the pianist returned and filled the rooms with old time classics and we had a good sing-song.

The residents baked some fairy cakes and also made a delicious loganberry and raspberry crumble.

The residents moved straight onto making pumpkin decorations for Halloween – no rest for the wicked!

The Old Vicarage is sad to announce the passing away of its proprietor Barbara Siddiqi in October 2016. Mrs. Siddiqi had owned and managed The Old Vicarage for more than 20 years. She dedicated her career to the care of others and her aim was to have a care home which felt like home. She will be missed. Her son, Kamal Siddiqi will continue as the business manager of The Old Vicarage.

CHURCH NEWS

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s Please come along and see the newly installed stained glass window. It is a magnificent piece of art. Initially, it was installed in St.Cuthbert’s Church in Flookburgh when the church opened in the late 1970’s as a Chapel of Ease for St. Charles Church, and was donated by a local Flookburgh family in memory of one of their children, who had sadly died at a very young age. Best admired from the inside because of the natural light

shining through it, the birds represent the seagulls of the Farne Islands which was, of course, where St. Cuthbert, who

Grange Methodist

On Sunday 4th October, we welcomed men from the North East, who were members of a choir and were visiting, on a short break. There was a very reverent atmosphere as communion was served by Rev Jo Rand and two communion stewards. At a joint service with the members of the local URC Church, Rev Pam Noonan from Kendal, was the preacher and there was a hearty sing from the congregation, using Mission Praise Hymnbooks. The pianist was Kathy Stancliff. At the Women’s Network meeting, the speakers were three ladies from Arnside Methodists. The were members of a group who use the sewing and knitting talents, to make bags with toiletry requirements in for schoolgirls, in developing countries, who without these would lose precious education. They also made ‘fish and chip’ jumpers and tiny hats. These are for small babies who have no clothes ready for them at birth, and who otherwise would be covered and clothed in newspaper – hence the name.

Churches Together

Plans are afoot for the annual Advent Service. This will be in the Chapel at Boarbank Hall on 27th December at 3pm. Everyone is welcome. The men’s Breakfast Fellowship will meet on the 19th November at 8.45 am at the Thornleigh Hotel, on the Esplanade.

St Paul’s Grange

We would like to extend our thanks to all who gave such good support to Reverend Nick Ash during the last few months and at his final memorable service, which was attended by over 300 people. It was wonderful to hear so many tributes to him from the different areas of his life and leadership and to know that he was held in such great esteem. The generous giving at this service has meant that the substantial amount of almost £600 can be sent to the

was Bishop of Lindisfarne, came to live and work. Regarding the social side of parish life, the barbecue held in the parish garden on 10th September was attended by 40-50 parishioners and friends, including a group of sisters from Boarbank, who seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. Entertainment was provided by ‘The Rockin’ Rev’ aka Fr. Kevan Dorgan from St. Herbert’s Parish in Windermere whose brand of humour coupled with a mix of folk music and popular songs from the 60’s and 70’s ensured that the whole event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

United Reformed Church Autumn activities are in full swing and our Women’s Guild programme has started. During November there will be a devotional led by Rev’d Pam Noonan on the 2nd, Jack Manning is going to talk about his life as a Flookburgh Fisherman on the 9th and Northumberland is the subject of Colin Milner’s talk on the 16th. Janice Carrick’s subject is Singing for the Brain on the 23rd and on the 23rd Kate Thorburn is going

seasonal with Christmas Flowers. Remember everyone is welcome at 2.30pm on Wednesday afternoons.Looking forward, please put our Christmas Coffee morning in your diary for December 3rd. we will be so glad to see you. Another reminder of the season is the Churches Together Advent Service at Boarbank on 27th Nov at 3.30pm. Details of other seasonal services will be included next month.

homes in disasters. The Dorian Players are a group of friends whose ages span 7 decades. Dressed in period costume, they will take us on a journey from the 12th to 17th century, playing music which includes dance tunes, songs and early Christmas carols on instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, viol da gamba, gothic harp, recorder, gemshorn, cornemuse, crumhorn, épinette and medieval fiddle. Quaker Meeting House on Haggs Lane, Cartmel (opposite the Doctor’s surgery), and is open to all. Donations to Shelterbox are invited. For further information: cartmel@quaker.org.uk.

Thankfully, the rain held off for our silent vigil outside Grange library on 8 October. With the recent destructive impact of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti fresh in our thoughts, local Quakers and others joined together to hold in thought and prayer all those affected by climate change and those working towards achieving climate change justice. On Thursday 24 November at 7.30pm we will be hosting a concert by The Dorian Players in aid of the charity Shelterbox which provides emergency shelters and tools etc for families who lose their

Churches Together in Grange & District Youth Trust. Photographs can be seen on: www.grangepcc. co.uk and you will also find information regarding services and events. La Serenata Ensemble were the guest artistes for the final concert in our well-liked season of lunchtime concerts. With a selection of songs from popular musicals and including a lively Carioca played on the flute, this talented trio of Charles Edmondson, David Edmonds and Wendy Sharrock entertained a considerable number of people

in church recently and we are pleased to announce that there are plans for another season of concerts next year. The 8.00am Sunday service at St Paul’s has been changed to become a Team service and will now be held at the same time in St Mary’s Church, Allithwaite each Sunday. The Parochial Church Council has met to decide upon approval of the contractors for the reordering of St Paul’s and it is anticipated that the work will commence around the beginning of November.

Grange Soroptimists

Members enjoyed an informal lunch at the Netherwood Hotel to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the Charter of the Club. On 14th October “An Evening with Val Armstrong” was a great success with the Radio Cumbria presenter talking about her work as a broadcaster and her experience of breast cancer. Over 100 members and guests enjoyed wine and canapes and visited stalls to make purchases and find out more about Soroptimism and Cath Holland’s work to eliminate FGM. Proceeds were for the charity Breast Cancer Care and the final total is awaited. The club is grateful to Val Armstrong, Netherwood Hotel, Roseanne Walter and her string quartet, The Villa, Clarence House, Holker Hall, Cartmel Cheeses, Hot Wines Cartmel, Wax Lyrical, Julie Foster, Ann Heap, St Mary’s Hospice Friendship Support Group and Cath Holland who all contributed to the success of the evening. Grange Garden Society

At our September meeting it was revealed that John Huggett who lived in Grange in 1940 bred an apple which bears his name. It would be interesting to hear whether this variety is still grown in the town. This was just one of the many fascinating facts given to us by Andy Gilchrist, in an illustrated talk “Apple growing in Cumbria”. Andy is an agronomist and has been associated with apple growing since he commenced his first job. Now retired he has his own orchard and continues to follow his interest as the Chairman of the South Lakeland Orchard Group. Andy has a wealth of experience in apple growing and this meant his talk was full of good advice and information. We heard how to graft apple varieties onto rootstock, how to train and feed trees and how to identify and deal with pests and diseases. Following a most comprehensive talk we were then treated to questions and answers and a tasting of delicious apple varieties grown locally. The first of our Winter meetings, starting at 2pm, will be held in the United Reformed Church Hall on Friday 21st October the topic is Meconopsis. Visitors are welcome.

Grange WI

At our September meeting we discussed the programme of talks and events for 2017. Members reported back on two excellent evenings – the Hobbit at Williamson Park and a canal boat trip on the Lancaster Canal. Judith also reported back on her experiences at Denman College. Laura Harker gave a fascinating talk about Quilling – an art which dates back to when paper was first made in China in the first century. Laura explained how she became captivated by it and she showed us some of her creations. She said that Quilling had become very popular in the last 30 years, especially so in Holland, USA and

Australia. We then had a go ourselves and made our own cards – some with festive themes. Festive craft making continues at our November meeting with a chance to make pottery angels.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

Discovering a Landscape of Industry : Old crafts and industries of Lakeland The October lecture was given by Andy Lowe, a very popular speaker and the hall was full. Rocks, woodland and water provided the power and resources which came together at times of economic demand to produce a variety of local industries and crafts.

The rocks produced minerals such as copper, pyrites, quartz. Lime was used for agriculture and house building.Slate was in demand and the railways provided the necessary transport. The lakes provided access and Greenodd was an important port. The many becks provided water power for the mills. The coppiced woodlands provided charcoal, the hazel for swill or cockle baskets, the birch for besom brushes. Pegs and bobbins were made too. The oak bark gave the tannin for cowhides to be cured at tanneries such as Rusland. Andy compared this industrial landscape with the industrial city landscape painted by Lowry. The Lakeland industrial activity was scattered over a large area as opposed to the more familiar highly concentrated Lowry setting.

Wine and nibbles were served after the lecture to celebrate 20 years of Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society. The AGM is on 3 November.

St Mary’s Hospice Friendship & Support Group

The group meet every Friday 2- 4pm in the Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Kents Bank Road, in Grange. Do you or a family member/friend suffer from cancer or a life-shortening illness? Are you caring for someone or are you recently bereaved? St Mary’s Hospice Friendship and Support Group is here for you. Please drop in for a friendly chat, to make new friends, and/or just to enjoy time together. All are welcome. For more information contact Marie on 33279.

Grange & District Art Society

Our September activities culminated in the Millennium Competition. The winning picture was a delicate coloured pencil drawing “Hedge Brown Butterfly”, done by Peter Williams. Congratulations Peter! October could well be dubbed “ a month of portraits “ with sitters at two of our meetings. Members have already responded to the first of these, one or two people never having attempted portraits before. Seemingly they enjoyed the effort – between the“ oops! “and the giggles and will be ready for the next. Our Autumn Exhibition in the library opens on Monday 7th November, lasting until Friday 2nd December. Our A.G.M. is on Thursday 10th November. Highlight of the month is on Thursday 17th November when Hideyuki Sobue, the Japanese artist will be demonstrating brush hatching using Sumi ink and acrylic. This, as all our meetings, is in the Allithwaite Community Hall at 2p.m. It will last a little longer than usual finishing at 4.30 p.m. Visitors are welcome. Cost £5 including tea/coffee and biscuits. Information on any of the above – contact Angela 33842; Elizabeth 35163. Evening meetings continue on the first Friday of each month in the Father Magna room at the Catholic Church, Kent’s Bank Road.

We do appreciate our NSPCC supporters who are so generous with their time and effort to raise funds for this worthwhile charity, not forgetting, of course, when the amount of £770 (an amended figure from that I gave to Grange Now for their October issue) was raised at the “Tea in the West End” event on the 20th August. We look forward to seeing you all at our Annual Christmas Coffee Morning at the end of November.

Some were very exotically flavoured and they go all over the world. Next month: Annual Meeting with supper.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

The meeting opened with the singing of Jerusalem, minutes were agreed and signed and the Treasurer’s report given. The president thanked those members who had participated in the “Poetry, plonk and Prose” evening and confirmed that there were still places available on the Liverpool trip. The Westmorland appraisals were returned to members and a Thankyou card from Lois Quinn was read out. Tickets were on sale for the November coffee morning and the committee’s decision to cap the current membership was explained to the members. Federation details were highlighted in clouding the Festival of music and carols to be held in December. Elizabeth Scott gave details of her trip to Denman and encouraged members to apply for bursaries. The speaker, Bishop Nigel McCullough gave an entertaining and very enjoyable talk on some of his Right Royal Roles. It was very humourous, lively and an informative address enjoyed by everyone present. The next meeting will be held at Allithwaite Community Centre on Tuesday November 1st when the AGM will follow our annual meal provided by the committee.

Grange Lecture Society

Colourfully attired in late 15th Century costume, solo historical musician Peter Bull opened the new season in resounding style on 11th October with a fast-moving recital of early to late medieval songs and dances from England, France, the Low Countries, Spain, Italy and Germany. His

There are three lectures this month. On 8th November in a lecture entitled ‘The Remote Himalayan Kingdom of Zanskar’ Rosamund and John MacFarlane will recall a summer trek through Zanskar in the Indian Himalayas, and talk about the people, culture and landscapes of this remote area. Then on 22nd November in ‘In and Under the Vatican’ Professor Joyce Hill returns to talk about her stay in the Vatican and the relationship of the present basilica to the fourth century one of Constantine. Finally on 29th November the Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture will be given by renowned wildlife cameraman Doug Allan, whose subject is ‘Poles at the Crossroads’. The lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Grange Probus Club

On 10th October, Chris Wilcock gave an illustrated talk on the work of Water Aid. Chris began by explaining the enormous loss of life due to disease spread by foul water. He showed how African women and children spent several hours a day carrying water from pools which were also used by animals. He then showed the various ways in which Water Aid helped. This involved building wash houses and toilets, drilling deep wells and piping water from the local aquifers. Local ingenuity was illustrated by showing how a local man extracted water from a well using a rope with plastic bottles attached which was winched up using an old bicycle wheel with a handle attached. The vital work of Water Aid is only possible through donations from the public. PROBUS is a club for retired men and women to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. The Club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. If you would like more information on the Club and its activities please contact either: Chairman - Ken Thompson 01539534898 or Secretary - Ewen Cameron 01539532319

On 20th September, Trudi Carter demonstrated her art of cake decorating to a very attentive audience, and on the 27th we were off to see the Wizard of Oz. Performed by Ulverston Amateur Operatic Society, it was a very enjoyable show. On 4th October, after following the Yellow Brick Road, we set off along the Dales Highway in the company of Malcolm Kimber. His slideshow led us from Saltaire in West Yorkshire to Appleby, the former County Town of Westmorland. His detailed account of the journey, with picturesque views of the countryside, was greatly enjoyed by all.

In October, the management committee held an ‘open’ meeting for members in which the recent challenges facing the club, both on the course and financially, were discussed. Over 100 members attended with overwhelming support and good input received from the floor. This, in turn, means the Committee has a clear remit and direction to secure the long term future of the club at Meathop Road. The optimism continues as course drainage measures taken recently become more effective. Now, after heavy rain, along excess water that flows from higher land, the club is capable of making the course drier much quicker than before. Winter membership offers available. We have several social events over the next few months and everyone is welcome. There is a quiz each month and this month we are putting on a Mystery Murder evening with a two course meal.

Phil joined in 1966 as a gifted Junior, has held various Captaincies, been Chairman, has retired as a Chartered Surveyor, and now plays for the 1st Division Men’s Team.

He is closely followed by June Read (joined 1970) and Dorothy Davies (joined 1974); both holding a treasure trove of offices between them. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication. We’d also like to remember other townspeople that have passed through the Club including Reg Parker, Derek Ward, John Hawksley, Hermione Fletcher, Jim Chorlton, Marjorie Clark, Edith Wright, and Chris Perkins to name but a few. And back to 2016 our AGM is to be held at the tennis club on Wed 16th November. www.nlltc.co.uk

Bonus ball winners. 8 Oct.(No 27). Colin Burrow. 1 Oct. (No 55) Beryl Leck. 24 Sept. (No 42) Pat Worsley. 17 Sept (No 37) Beryl Walker. The last six months in the hall has seen a rise in bookings and revenue. The library [ every friday morning ] goes from strength to strength with now having DVDs and magazines which can be borrowed. The Bonus Ball brings regular income , and a donation from Ian of Allithwaite Road of a dishwasher and a microwave continue to upgrade the hall. A whist drive organised by Hanson and Hazel Charnley of Rusland B and B donated a fantastic £ 347 . towards hall funds . We have now had the first stage of the kitchen upgrade completed, Vulcan Electric has rewired the kitchen and installed a new window fan and led fluorescent light ,this is part of our continual refurbishment of the hall. Our applications for help with funding the cost of removing the chimneys has been sent out, and with any help they can give, we will have the chimneys removed and the roof repaired asap. Our Christmas Coffee Morning will be held on Sat 19th November 10am 12 noon.

Allithwaite Running Club

Amazing! Fantastic! Awe-inspiring! words which describe our very own new ultrarunners participating in the 50 mile, 4000 metres of ascent Lakes in a Day on 8-9th October. Tina Jackson took 2nd ladies place, less than 10 minutes behind the winner with a time of 12 hours 6 minutes 15. Alistair Arnott in his first long race with a time of 15h 38 mins 41s showed huge determination, and Ann Nicholson demanded enormous respect for navigating through the night to become Ladies Vet60 Champion with a time of 22h 19mins 39. Elsewhere, Tina managed a respectable 6th ladies place at Coniston Trail race. If you feel that 5 miles is still a long way to run, please get in touch with us at allithwaiterunningclub@gmail.com or message us via Facebook to start training from being able to walk/jog a mile to taking you up to 3 or 5 miles in a 5 week period. Running is a fantastic way to keep fit, and we’re a sociable club so not all about winning races! We’ll help you to be the best you can be! Join us on a Monday or Thursday training evening at 6.30pm, Allithwaite Community Centre.
