Sem –VI

KALAKAR PARADIS, UMEA HOUSING FOR ARTISTS

Brief The name of the project is a mix of Hindi and Swedish where “kalakar” means artist while “paradis” means paradise .

This project was also done during my exchange program in Sweden ! This was our main design project. We were supposed to design and propose any housing project which was to come up in an old industrial area by the bank of the river on which the city of Umea was situated on which was rapidly transforming into a residential neighborhood. Our studio (Studio-2) revolved around how we could incorporate waste materials into our day to day lives and design .

I choose to create HOUSING FOR ARTISTS along the bank of the river , as there were a group of artists which had studios located in a building called Fabriken which was a mixed-use space . These artists didn’t have access to housing nearby which meant long commutes into the city or further just to get home .

I proposed a residential building next to Fabriken which consisted of various types of flats like 1BHK,2BHK apartments , which were to be given out on rental basis . This project was not only limited to the residential building , rather the whole redevelopment of the site to make something useful for the artists and the nearby residents .

BOREALIS , UMEA AROURA WATCH TOWER

Brief This project was done during my exchange program in Sweden. The brief was to construct a watch tower to view the astonishing northern lights which were prominent in the area the site was located in .

The site is located in Umea , Sweden one of the northernmost cities of Sweden . This structure designed my me and 3 of my friends Zareen , Nimisha and Prisha took inspiration from the materials used locally to create this structure .

This structure is a marriage Wood and Corten Steel has been used throughout the project to give it a unique style amidst the snowy terrain. Staircase within is of steel with perforated steps to prevent snow accumulation. With the visibility of lights while climbing the structure in mind, a semi concealing façade system has been designed using Wood Battens. The individual pods are constructed using Timber with a firepit which adds to the experience .

ABOUT THE PROJECT

JOINERY DETAILS

Bright green waves of light across the vast starry skies are one magical experience that every Umea resident has never gotten bored of and has always held a supporting character in all stories for its majestic visuals.

Throughout the ages, people have been patient and waited hours outdoors in temperatures in the negatives to catch a glimpse of these lights. Here we have tried to create a space that replicates this experience but with a more relaxed and comfortable setting allowing users to enjoy the watch.

Our structure not only functions as the proposed Aurora Watchtower but during the off season it can be used as a gathering spot by the Nydala lake. This keeps the structure occupied throughout the year.

Brief This project was done during my second year in M.S.A.P . this was a campus design project where we had to design an interior design school which was based in Manipal.

My project draws inspiration from its surroundings and is heavily influenced by the regional context . It has influenced everything from the form of my individual blocks to the materials used in its construction .

This campus consists of an academic block with an attached mess , administrative block , multipurpose hall and other amenities which are crucial to the holistic development of students .

Design as a cultural artifact Architecture as artifact is a matter of “reading” a building and its environment.

• Architecture must be seen in the context of its location.

Geography, climate, natural resources, travel, and trade routes affect what is built, as well as how it is built.

• The building shouldn’t only be built function , it should also be a part of that culture , of the region !

HARMONY HALLS , MANIPAL HOSTEL CAMPUS

This design was done in my 4 th year , the goal of the studio was to propose a housing design which could accommodate 4000 students along with 60 faculty .

The main focus of this studio was to design the social spaces and the hostels being an extension of that social space , as social spaces are key for the development of a student .

I designed 2 blocks which were for the students , 1 for boys and 1 for girls . Along with that the campus included a basketball court , library , mess and a block for the faculty .

We had a contoured site which I stepped the site into 3 levels to accommodate the hostels and the social spaces . The girls and the mess were in the highest level , which the social spaces like the library , basketball court and O.A.T were located in the second level . The girl's hostel and the faculty block was located on the last level .

Proposal : This is a façade design done by me for an NGO which is located in Manipal . It is an extension of an already exiting building and since the project was low cost , I went with a simple yet aesthetic design using jaali tiles and subtle colors since the ashram is for differently abled children .

Using the colors of the logo as the color palate , this façade design seeks to impress the visitors and at the same time have a calm and soothing effect on the viewer .
