Topic picked: Time - Interaction with Alarm The brief I chose is Time, and it is also similar to the example, I want to learn about the relationship between time and everyday users during the period of sleep and waking up, more speciÞcally, how users interact with alarm. phone is too frequent and annoys her during the nap. (Does everyone know how long does he/she actually need for sleep? How does he/she be sure of? Can a design help achieve it? how about different time-zone and jet-lag adjustment?)

And Charlotte says her experience on snooze function was bad, she does not actually know how many snooze will go on after Þrst goes-off and how frequent it is, and stopping snooze is difÞcult because she could not Þgure it out which is button for the stopping alarm and which is the button for stopping the snooze, mis-pressing worries her of the alarm not going off, or unwanted snoozing which affects more on her nap. (Massive breakdown and work-around on previous paragraph) Charlotte sums that the key of waking up is just to wake up, no hesitation, no matter how reluctantly. But if there is no schedule for the next day, she always fail on waking up early.

Largely due to sleeping late. There was a time-period she would need her boy-friend to wake her up via call everyday, which she said it was sweet. (Nice touch on social interaction, also reading stories of these interviews inspires me as myself having problem of waking up as well!)

She always sets alarm every night before sleep when she charges her phone. She says she likes her android alarm, because it reminds her how many hours to go before the goes-off, so there will be no a.m./p.m. mistake or even mistake like setting an alarm for next week/weekend. (Good user feedback)

WK3. Ideation

POV: (I picked two because I see the two POVs have potentials and could be overlapping as the project goes) 1. Waking-up and getting-to-sleep in fact relates to a person’s Circadian Rhythm or the correlated Biological Clock. Rather than a traditional approach that stimulates only one node of the Circadian Rhythm (and perhaps poorly), an approach that helps a user to adjust and accommodate to one’s best Circadian Rhythm could construct an experience with time to the user.

2. With observations, waking up by a work call or a person shakes us up more effectively than a meaningless ring from an alarm. Waking up TO a social interaction seems to work better than just simply wake-up, period. Wake up to a certain activities/tasks/interaction possibly offers better motivations to Þght a drowsy struggling wake-up.

Reßection: (Solutions of identiÞed problems noted on the above) I think when you create a function in an app, you are trying to convey a certain workßow or framework that you think would be suitable to complete the task for the users, but as the target users they are a group of individuals that may tackle the same problem differently, and among their ways to complete the certain task, there usually lie with great insights or some miss-out that you made, which I think is on of the good reasons to conduct Heuristic evaluation at the early stages.

For this speciÞc Heuristic exercise, one common error that the designer makes is System Status Visibility, we as the designer sometime assumes that the user would have the same perspective or mindset/framework as we do when using the app, therefore the designer neglects the hints or cues for showing the current status of the task. But I realize this is also a learning process for users, some may get it after a few scrolling, but for some may rely on the actual hints or cues heavily throughout the whole heuristic process. Maybe this is a Þne-line balance between the guiding and learning.

For other principles like Flexibility and EfÞciency Use and Freedom of Use, I found that these improvement are not so obvious for the start, they can only be discovered after a long walkthrough or long period of usage maybe e.g. beta test in real life, and by both designers or users, also for a thought right now, probably improvement opportunities could be discovered by some extreme usersÕ work-around?

Social Alarm App Testing Protocol: Before it starts I would like to mention again, the session will not ‘test' you or your ability, rather the session will test the app to provide information on areas that might be improved. And if you do not want to continue, you may end the session and leave at any time.

And process will be video-documented, screenshots maybe taken for documentation and study purposes, the video will not be used for any commercial purposes.

1. Þrst, you can do a casual browsing, just navigate around the app, for non-English speaking user, you can ask me if there is a language problem. (observe Þrst action, repeated visit function, question raised, hesitates, stops) 2. OK, next, can you back to the main screen, and set an alarm 3. After this, can you record a voice message and share it with friends 4. Can you go and check out what are the records everyone been sharing 5. Let’s change a current alarm with one of you favorite recording as the alarm ring 6. Alright, those were the tasks of the whole test, any Þnal thoughts or question you wanna share? e.g. you wish to.. or you like or hate.. if there is one change you can make, what will you change?..

I am quite surprise users focus more on the ‘social’ aspect of the app, while I pretty much more focus on the core alarm function at early stage, I think social aspect should have a more prominent present in the app. This could really shift the direction of the app development. Cool Þnding here.

Online A/B testing: There are many aspects could be tested on, however, from the above mentioned Þnding, I wanna explore more on social aspect of the app, therefore I decided to focus on whether certain placement or buttons arrangement will affect the time users spend on or the click-through times of ‘records feed’ page.

The test will be conducted with two different versions of the main interface, with one version enlarges and centers the Alarm function button at the bottom menu, another version does the same with ‘record feed’ button. Two groups of users will be assigned the core basic tasks to Þnish, after it, the users will be asked to do a 2 minutes casual browsing as if this is one of the daily routine check on this app. Then the results data of the clicking times as well as the time duration spent on Ôsocial pagesÕ will illustrate if the buttons-arrangement signiÞcantly affects users attention on social aspect of the apps.

User Testing Summary & Screenshots: It was very interesting to see online testing because it includes a much wider variety of users which produces really interesting observations and feedbacks. And Found that the mindset to remind testers before testing starts is really important to set the whole testing straight.

The AB testing, on results, it proves my previous assumption, which is bigger button does guide users using more Social function. For my case, I enlarge the Social Feed button, then check for usersÕ Þrst action, group A with enlarged button do click this Social Feed button Þrst among other buttons. And also the post-testing writing feedback shows different preference toward Social function and core Alarm function.

But when I look into the video recording and feedbacks from the testers, I found there could be personality factor for user choose to use Social function more than Alarm function. Because one user stressed many times that he loves to interact with friends during the test. Another reason that could overthrown the result is just simply poor reviews from users, one set of my testers perform noticeably less involved than the other half, not sure if this could be the reason.
