You will work as an integral part of a team with lawyers who are experts in their fields and who are committed to giving you unrivalled opportunities for professional growth and development. Our trainees share an office with a partner or senior associate. This gives you invaluable exposure to high quality work and clients, allows you to learn from the experts and helps you to build meaningful life-long connections. The benefits of these connections last long after traineeships are completed, and it is yet another example of practical steps we take in the pursuit of legal expertise and excellence for our trainees.

We have an open door policy throughout the firm and the atmosphere is one of genuine approachability. Our culture is a reflection of our commitment to one another. The friendly and supportive environment is mentioned time and time again as one of the key attractions of working in Arthur Cox.

The best thing for me about working in Arthur Cox is the calibre of people I get to work with. It pushes you to be the best you can be every day. People in Arthur Cox take their work and their clients very seriously, but don’t take themselves too seriously. There is a friendly and casual atmosphere in the firm.

great craic At Arthur Cox, we understand the importance of socialising and camaraderie within the workplace. So much so that we have a dedicated social committee who arrange a wide variety of social events throughout the year including cycling, quizzes and even talent competitions! Trainees are heavily involved in the social activities of the firm. While these events have been chosen so as to appeal to a wide range of interests, it is up to each trainee to choose what to invest in for their own personal and social development. Whether it is tag rugby, volunteering, using our onsite state of the art gym or singing in the Arthur Cox choir, we are sure that you will find something that appeals to you.

greater good At Arthur Cox our strong sense of community is the bedrock for our continued success. This is why we make giving back to both local and global communities a priority. The founder of our firm, Arthur Cox, was a well-known philanthropist, and the firm proudly retains his ethos. The firm has a very active, well-developed, extensive and embedded corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. Arthur Cox works closely with our charity partners, which are chosen by the staff and are supported for a two year period. They currently are: Dublin Simon Community, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, and Solas Project. We also have

established volunteering partnerships with Special Olympics Ireland, NCI Early Learning Initiative and our own programme – PRIME. One of the unique things about the Arthur Cox Trainee Programme is the opportunity for trainees to take part in our award-winning, entirely trainee-led, Arthur Cox Zambia Project which has raised over ₏500,000 to benefit the region since 2008. Every year a group of trainees travel to

Zambia to work for two weeks on projects such as helping farmers plant and grow rice, building a specialised maternity ward, building sanitation facilities, establishing a training centre and building radio schools. The ultimate goal of the Zambia Project is to lift standards of living and improve health facilities for the communities in the area. It is a unique project, in that it is entirely trainee-led and driven by the needs of the local people and local government and tribal leaders.

Why did you choose a career in law? What drew me to law initially was that it seemed like a career with a lot of variety what you do on a given day is dependent on what a client needs, and that could be anything. I had always been very interested in how society functions, how decisions are made and I think law as a career gives you an insight into parts of society that you would otherwise never see. Why did you choose to train with Arthur Cox?

ELAINE GUCKIAN From Dublin Studied Law at Trinity College

I chose to train with Arthur Cox after completing a summer internship following my final year of university. I found the work fascinating but it was the atmosphere and the culture that made the decision for me. People were really invested in encouraging and guiding trainees as they were trying to understand what they wanted from their career. There was also an emphasis on diversity which was important to me. I was impressed at the fact Arthur Cox was the first firm in Dublin to set up an LGBT+ Alliance and that there

is such engagement with the project from everyone in the firm. There’s also a great emphasis within the firm on mentoring women and building connections. Your experience as a trainee in Arthur Cox I am currently in my third rotation. My first rotation was in Litigation, my second was in Financial Regulation and I am now in Environment and Planning. The positive atmosphere I had seen as an intern is certainly still here and I have enjoyed getting involved in some of the extra curriculars available like the charity runs that the firm takes part in. The department-specific training and the more general training has been great and I think trainees are really supported to do their best and improve professionally as much as possible. An Interesting Fact... I play guitar and I sing.

Why did you choose a career in law? I chose to study law as it represents a practical way to provide great assistance to people and organisations, as well as an interesting intellectual challenge. Why did you choose to train with Arthur Cox?

CONOR KEEGAN From Co. Waterford Studied Law & Politics at UCD Masters in Public International Law in Leiden University

I chose to train with Arthur Cox after participating in the Summer Intern Programme in 2015. Throughout the Programme I saw first hand the highly interesting nature of the work which Arthur Cox undertakes, as well as the excellent training and commitment to teamwork within the firm. These values have continued throughout the Trainee Programme, with senior partners and associates providing constant guidance with regard to both legal knowledge and professional conduct. Your experience as a trainee in Arthur Cox My experience to date with Arthur Cox

started with a secondment with the Immigrant Council of Ireland followed by a rotation in Environment and Planning. I then attended Blackhall for PPC1 and since returning I have completed a rotation in Capital Markets and I am currently in Property. Arthur Cox provided me with the fantastic opportunity to work with the Immigrant Council of Ireland for six months prior to beginning the Trainee Programme. There, I gained a unique insight into areas such as immigration, citizenship and refugee law. I also assisted the Immigrant Council in its awareness and policy campaigns and the helpline which it provides for persons in need of assistance. An Interesting Fact... In my free time, I enjoy running. Arthur Cox’s commitment to events like the Calcutta Run allows me to run and raise funds for a great cause at the same time.

Why did you choose a career in law?

Your experience as a trainee in Arthur Cox

Growing up in the developing world, in the absence of a developed legal system, I decided from an early age that law was the career for me. Being a solicitor means you can work in a huge range of areas and you are given the room to develop and challenge yourself while having the support of a firm behind you.Â

I could not have asked for a better traineeship to date. From the moment I sent in my application I have been made to feel welcome and valued by everyone I have encountered. The breadth of expertise within the firm and the five rotations means I am able to work on a huge variety of challenging and interesting areas. Throughout my traineeship, I have received constant support and the level of training has exceeded my expectations.

Why did you choose to train with Arthur Cox?

AMINA FLYNN Born in Mozambique Studied Law International at UCC

I wanted to work in a firm that was at the forefront of the landmark deals and cases in Ireland, representing the clients whose businesses shape our everyday lives, and for me that could only mean working in Arthur Cox. Arthur Cox not only offered a high calibre of training, but also provided me with the opportunity to work with colleagues who are the leading experts in their fields.

An Interesting Fact... I play squash and racquetball. My mother tongue is Portuguese. As a child I had a pet wild boar and a vervet monkey.

Why did you choose a career in law? I wanted to work in a job that was challenging and exciting but also helped others resolve their problems. Throughout university, I completed a number of internships in law, accounting and insurance firms to understand their differences. Ultimately, I found the work in law firms far more interesting and very interactive with clients. Why did you choose to train with Arthur Cox?

CLAUDINE O’DRISCOLL From West Cork Studied Law & Maths at UL Masters in International Commercial Law in UCD and University of Melbourne

In Arthur Cox trainees get to share an office with a partner or associate during each rotation. This is a great way to become part of the team and learn from their experience and advice. As a trainee, you get to complete five rotations from a range of diverse practical areas which means that everyone can tailor their career specific to their interests.

The people in Arthur Cox are very kind and down to earth. It’s an extremely collaborative culture and there is a fantastic work-life balance. Your experience as a trainee in Arthur Cox So far, working as a trainee in Arthur Cox has been extremely exciting, challenging and rewarding. My first rotation was within the Technology and Innovation practice which is the largest Irish legal team dedicated to data protection, IT and IP law. During this rotation I got to work on an array of exciting data protection and GDPR projects for some of the largest technology companies in the world. Since returning from Blackhall and PPC1 I have completed a rotation in Corporate and I am now in Litigation. An Interesting Fact... I was a member of the Reserve Defence Forces for six years and was ranked a Three Star Private.

Why did you choose to train with Arthur Cox?

JAMES SWEENEY From Co. Clare Studied Law in NUIG Why did you choose a career in law? Over the course of three summers in secondary school, I spent time working in a local law firm, which is where I got my first taste of the world of law. Although my tasks were limited, it showed me the workings of a law firm, the nature of the work, and I really enjoyed it. Unofficially, the TV show ‘Boston Legal’ may have also played a part in my decision!

From quite early on in college, the strong reputation that Arthur Cox holds within the legal industry in Ireland was impressed on us. As I researched firms and learned more about the legal industry in Ireland, it became clear to me that Arthur Cox’s reputation of excellence is as widely regarded abroad as it is within Ireland. This, coupled with the domestic and international clients that Arthur Cox work with, and the industries and markets within which they operate, left me in little doubt that training with Arthur Cox was the best launchpad for my career in law. The opportunity to work alongside and learn from the foremost lawyers in Ireland was an exciting one, and having completed two rotations within the firm, I can say that my decision was the correct one. Your experience as a trainee in Arthur Cox To date, I have completed two rotations, one in the Property department and one in the Asset Management and Investment Funds department. One of the most positive aspects of the Trainee Programme is the responsibility given to you as a trainee, the work being challenging, yet

rewarding. Meanwhile, the opportunity to share an office with a partner in both departments has been key to enhancing my learning experience while also allowing me the chance to develop strong working relationships with leading personnel within the firm. The importance of a work/life balance is also emphasised in Arthur Cox, and everyone is encouraged to maintain hobbies you have away from work. The general atmosphere within the firm is a sociable one also, fostered through internal facilities such as the restaurant, barista, and gym, or alternatively through firm or department days out, and teams and societies such as the firm soccer and tag rugby teams, or the Arthur Cox golf society. An Interesting Fact... Prior to joining Arthur Cox, I spent a year and a half living and working in Hong Kong and London.
