ENCASEMENT - DIGITAL RENDER/WELDED STEEL/RUSTED METAL

The sculpture is called “Encasement” and is a continuation of a series of studies I created in my previous art education and followed through to my architecture masters. The idea behind Encasement is the connection between the natural environment (an environment that is not influenced by people) and the built environment (an environment influenced by humans). My theme for this project was specific to Alberta. I was interested in the changing landscape from the Prairies, Foothills, to the Rookies.

URBAN TEMPEST - DIGITAL RENDER

Urban Tempest follows a very simple idea, by projecting the natural and built environment through art to evoke communication and social interaction. By means of large scale construction located in public places, Urban Tempest can be viewed by many individuals and has the potential to conjure an emotion or sudden dialog amongst people. The art work provides people with a frame work, which can be used to pause and reflect on the identity of the place where they currently are. By means of the confrontation with public installation, people can rediscover the city and regain their sense of pride about their cities. This piece has the ability to stir emotions in order to make people reflect on the exact meaning of art and how it influences their lives.

ZERO G REFLECTIONS - DIGITAL RENDER

“Forever Thoughts” is a public sculpture that plays with the idea of infinite reflections.

Making use of two mirrors placed at the top and bottom of an enclosed box creates a never ending perspective when you look through the opening on the front. The long white and black lines guide your eyes either up or down and create a deep perspective and its black exterior make for approaching the 6 foot high box somewhat uncomfortable.

FOREVER THOUGHTS - MDF/MIRROR GLASS/LED

“My Nature” is an installation that evokes the idea of a natural man made structure. The installation is made up of hundreds of 1x2 pieces of wood nailed together to create a uniform shape. The wood slates are built one on top of each other forming a shape that starts small at the bottom and gets larger as it moves up to form the shape of a tree. An individual is allowed to walk around the structure create emotions and possibly create conversations with the people surrounding it.

ITS JUST A CHAIR - WELDED STEEL/ALUMINUM STRIPS

“Painting By Music” is an interactive art piece that allows an individual to engage the art by playing the piano and paint on a rotating canvas. As you press the keys on the piano it completes an electrical connection and activates the solenoid tubes and puts paint on the rotating canvas. The exposed mechanical parts allows an individual to witness the machine in action and get a visual understanding of how it works. The simple children’s piano attracts someone to press the keys, depending which key you press it corresponds with the matching color hitting the canvas. It is a very simple design and creates a fun interactive experience between the user and the art piece.

PROBLEM STATEMENT The design should address the problem of unwanted conductive advertisements transmitted through skull vibrations. It should allow the target user to enhance the sounds of daily life while filtering out the conductive advertisements. As such the device should be positioned within a few decades from our current date once smart advertising technologies become an increasing problem in peoples daily commute.

TRAIN/BIKE SHATTER PUSH + PULL

Pixelate 13 is comprised of 13 large mixed use commercial buildings that sit tightly along the train line near Huntingdale station in Melbourne Australia. This area was chosen based on its aggressive interaction with the bike path and train. Thinking about the bike & train as violent objects, they blast through the buildings in a pixelated manner molding interesting areas of steps and over hangs.

SKYLINE + OPEN UP GROUND

TERRACES

This explosion through the buildings develops an inward focus on the train and bike path from the buildings as well as creating a narrative experience as you ride the train or bike looking up at the terraces and over hangs.

Student housing is implemented into the design by placing them on the bike path level and top floors allowing interaction with the different programs in the buildings.

Art Centre located in the heart of Kensington/Sunnyside.

This project has a specific goal to expose, generate, and encourage arts practice and provide facilities for artists.

The Art Centre becomes an art hub, celebrating the diversity of the surrounding neighborhoods. Inspired by simple iconic forms, the project will engage the site through simple urban gestures while still maintaining a connection to the surrounding environment.

There are a number of design priorities that we have been constantly trying to resolve and progress to become a very enjoyable experience for visitors and the surrounding community. Much of our decision making throughout this project has revolved around the importance of the entry condition, the exhibiting of art, and creating a pure iconic form through simple formal gestures.

Entry Condition Many of our design decisions were taken from the current aspects of the site, and re-integrating into the new design. Using this approach doesn’t take away from the site but positively adds to the current established features.

The entry condition was very important to us and has gone through a constant iterative design process. This is the first experience a visitor has when approaching the site, so we tried to create an open, active, and inviting entry.

Exhibiting of Art Our second design priority is the exhibiting of art for visitors and the community. This is accomplished with a large indoor exhibition space on the main floor, to hold art installations and performances. To create a more direct connection with our entrance condition the north studio on the second floor will be an open studio that engages the pedestrian traffic from the Sunnyside train station.

-Pure Iconic Form Construction of the second floor followed our third design priority of creating a simple pure iconic form. This was accomplished by using a large box truss design, with an expressive hybrid (warren) truss system that floats above the site. The hybrid truss is a very important part of the simplistic design intentions with the superstructure elements forming triangular units.
