The Process

TAKING THE NEXT STEP

The Vision 2020 process is an open, all inclusive community visioning process designed to keep our community vibrant and growing.

Now that the 10 vision statements have been released it’s time to get to work! The Idea Selection Committee has worked hard to develop the top ten vision statements.

The mission of the Austin Vision 2020 initiative is to “inspire the community to collectively create a vision for a greater Austin through a city project where all ideas are welcomed and the best are brought to life.”

AUSTIN NEEDS YOU

Austin Vision 2020 set out to collect ideas from community members on what would make Austin better. Over 4,000 ideas were submitted by paper or through the website for consideration. All ideas were considered by members of the Idea Selection Committee.

Idea Selection Committee The Idea Selection Committee is comprised of a cross section of Austin’s community. Pam Bishop facilitated all meetings for the committee.

We NEED community members like you to get involved to make our community better. Interested in being part of a committee that will bring these visions to life? Maybe there is a particular vision that sparks your interest or you have a special skill set to help develop an idea - then we want you! Community members with passion to make Austin better are always welcomed. Interested community members can sign up at the Big Reveal to work on one of the ten vision statements. You can sign up to help on more than one vision if you like.

The goal of the group was to develop and implement a consensus driven group decision making process narrowing all ideas to ten by March of 2012.

Sign up sheets are available at the Big Reveal or you can visit the Vision 2020 website to sign up too. Just visit www.vision2020austin.com.

The Idea Selection Committee began meeting in November of 2011.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP INFORMATIONAL MEETING

The group established the following criteria to narrow the over 4,000 votes.

Community members who sign up to help are invited to come to the Taking the Next Step Informational Meeting at Riverland Community College.

*Does the idea have strong community impact? *Can this idea be executed in the next 8 years? *Does this idea require collaboration? *Is this idea innovative? *Do the resources exist to support the idea?

This informational meeting will provide information on the next steps in bringing the top ten ideas to reality as well as give participants a better feel for their potential time commitment.

By the end of November the group had completed voting and brought forth 91 ideas to present to the Austin community for public vote. Public voting took place via paper ballot and through the Vision 2020 website from December 3 – December 31st. The results of the public vote were given to the Idea Selection Committee in January 2012. The Idea Selection Committee took the top 30 ideas, the public voted for, and compiled the top ten vision statements.
