2011 Annual Report

Welcome

Mower County is a better place; thanks to support from you, our donors, volunteers and community champions. Together we are working to address the most pressing needs in our community. In 2010 Mower County raised over $1 million dollars for the first time ever. A very exciting time for us all. And this year our community came through again with another record setting year. The typical annual report trumpets the accomplishments of an organization, but that only tells part of the story. United Way of Mower County is a strong and effective agent for community change because of the support of you—individual donors, organizations, volunteers. Take a few minutes to look through our Annual Report. Read about some of the initiatives underway in Mower County, the programs we fund and ways you can get even more involved with United Way. Thank you for your continued support of the United Way of Mower County.

LETTER TO COMMUNITY Dear United Way Supporters, Wow! What can we say? Another record breaking year here at United Way and we couldn’t do it without you. This time of year we get to look back and reflect and we are so pleased of our accomplishments and what the future holds for United Way and the community. Fall 2011 brought another record setting campaign. Thanks to all the corporate donors, employee solicitors and individuals donors who put their trust into United Way year after year. Although we didn’t make our goal of $1.1 million we did surpass the 2010 campaign. This is truly a testament to the caring power of our community. United Way invested $780,000 into 49 community programs that focus on the building blocks of a good life; education, income and health. Thanks to all our donor volunteers who spent hours reading and interviewing program representatives before making their recommendations. This process allows our donors to learn more about the quality programs in our community and keeps programs accountable for grant dollars. Six month and annual reports are reviewed by volunteers. In addition to raising money, United Way continues to focus on making real impact in our community. Through our initiatives and partnerships we made real change in people’s lives. Here’s how: •

• •

Sixty-one (61) four year olds are attending pre-school county wide on a United Way scholarship. Sixty-nine (69) children receive transportation to and from pre-school on the Rainbow Route daily. Both the scholarship program and the Rainbow Route would not be possible without the support of the Hormel Foundation and AMCAT. Three hundred seventy six (376) children received a new or slightly used coat from the United Way Community Outerwear Drive. Children also received hats, mittens, snowpants, scarves and boots when available. Thanks to all our incredible donors for their support in keeping children warm. Over six hundred and seventy individuals (676 to be exact) formed teams and committed themselves to living a healthier lifestyle through the Get Fit and Be Fit Healthy Living challenges. We had a cold, but dry day for our 6th annual Day of Caring. One hundred twenty nine (129) volunteers helped their community members with projects such as window washing, brush removal, painting and general fix up projects.

United Way Board of Directors embarked on a strategic planning process in November of 2011. This process included several community conversations and two board retreats. The plan is being finalized and United Way Board Members will start conversations with the community to gain feedback on the DRAFT plan before finalizing. A lot of work has gone into this plan and it is our hope that it reflects the priorities of the community. On behalf of the entire United Way Board of Directors thank you for your contribution and support. It allows us to advance the common good in our community. Claude Pulliam -Board President Mandi Lighthizer-Schmdt -Executive Director
