For high end stores and designer brands, there’s Spinningfields, New Cathedral Street and King Street.

There’s a wide range of shops on Deansgate whilst the Northern Quarter is where you will find some fantastic independent retailers and two Manchester treasures- The Manchester Craft and Design Centre and Afflecks.

But for many people, the biggest attraction is the Manchester Christmas Markets. They’re back again and this year they’re bigger and better than ever. You can follow the trail on the map on page 28.

And don’t forget the indoor Victorian Christmas Market at Upper Campfield Market, Castlefield, and, for the first time, one at Spinningfields.

TAKE A WALK ROUND THE NORTHERN QUARTER So many presents to buy, so little time. But where to start? For a different take on Christmas shopping, take a look round the Northern Quarter, the home of vintage, craft and alternative, where, when it comes to Christmas shopping, you could be putting your pennies back into the local economy.

If you’re looking for something handmade, bespoke and personal, or just need a breather from the high street crowds, the Manchester Craft & Design Centre (Oak Street) is a good place to start. Winner of Manchester Tourism’s prestigious Best Independent Retailer 2013 award, it’s an altogether different shopping experience, an oasis of calm just five minutes from Market Street.

Once the home of the city’s retail fish market, the historic building features two floors of contemporary studios where you can buy directly from designer-makers. This year it’s been turned into a winter wonderland with a programme of special events, exhibitions and workshops running throughout the winter months.

With 18 independent studios selling handmade items from ceramics and soft toys to jewellery and textiles, there’s plenty to see, so give yourself a couple of hours’ breather from the grumpy shoppers and queues.

It would be unfair to recommend any one designer as every shop and studio offers genuine quality. Open seven days with late night shopping on Thursdays.

While you’re there, try some home cooked food at Oak St Café Bar. They use only local and responsibly sourced produce and have been ranked in the top five destinations for coffee in Manchester by locals.

Another Northern Quarter institution worth visiting is Afflecks (Church Street). It’s only a small step from vintage to rockabilly to alternative and all of these can be found in here. Anime sits alongside classic band t-shirts and refashioned vintage alongside handcrafted bags. Take a day, and get lost amongst the 30+ outlets on site. You can always refortify yourself with a cupcake or

two from Chezzie le Choux. You’ll deserve it.

If you’re looking for a little touch of luxury for the lady in your life (or an outstanding outfit for your Christmas party), take a look at Kiku (Tib Street) – stunning corsetry, delicate lingerie, accessories, perfect for the vintage lover and burlesque fan. And if you’re looking for something really special, speak to owner Lynn about having something bespoke made. It’s not as expensive as you think and really, truly, will be yours and yours alone.

Continuing with the clothing theme, move along to Retro Rehab (Oldham Street). With its range of vintage and reworked clothing and accessories, you’re bound to find something unusual for the vintage lover or for yourself for the work Christmas party. There’s a great selection for gentlemen, too, so if you’re thinking of buying a winter woolly, you can’t go wrong.

Never dismiss a charity shop. The prettiest china, books and nick nacks can make the perfect gift. And with Oxfam Originals on Oldham Street, you can revisit designer items from the past.

For some rather special chocolates for the special person in your life, the Bonbon Chocolate Boutique (John Street) is worth a visit. But take care. If you’re a fan of chocolate, too, you may leave with more than you expected.

For the crafter in your life, you can’t go wrong with Purl City Yarns (Port Street) and Abakhan (Oldham Street). Whether you’re looking for something for a beginner or an avid knitting or crochet fan, have a chat with the ladies at Purl City and walk away with the perfect gift. Fred Aldous (Lever Street) has a huge range of artists and craft materials downstairs and on the ground floor there are loads of goodies which would make great gifts and stocking fillers for anyone who’s not even the least bit crafty. Their partners in craft, the Ministry of Craft, offer courses which would also make the perfect gift. And if all else fails and you still can’t make a decision? There’s always a voucher.

Just across the road from the Arndale Market on High Street is Oklahoma with a huge selection of quirky knickknacks which make perfect stocking fillers. There’s a vegetarian café, too, if you need a refreshment break.

The wonderfully named Beermoth is tucked away near the edgy bit of Tib Street but is well worth seeking out.

It’s a specialist shop for the beer lover. They may get offended if you go in looking for a four pack of John Smiths, but if you’re going to have ‘just the one’ over Christmas then why not make it something worthwhile.

Their recommendations for the season are both Belgian Christmas beers - a 75cl bottle of De Ranke Pere Noel at £8.80 is definitely for the connoisseur in your family whilst the 33cl bottle of De La Senne Xmas Zinnebir is expected to be popular at £3.80.

Also on Tib Street, Beatin’ Rhythm is a gem of a shop. It specialises in Northern Soul 7” singles and has a massive range available. There are so many genuine classics here that it’s almost overwhelming. Each single is priced according to how rare it is.

If you’re overwhelmed by the stacks of singles, why not go for Illustrated Northern Soul by Elaine Constantine (£17.99). It’s a wonderfully evocative and fascinating book which even those who are too young to have visited Wigan Casino and The Twisted Wheel would appreciate. They also have a range of record cases designed for these timeless tunes priced from £30.

Vinyl is making a massive comeback and Piccadilly Records on Oldham Street is a must for anyone who has rediscovered it or never let it go. One big advantage at Piccadilly Records is that every item, vinyl or CD, has a helpful description from a member of staff advising you on its relevance, history and quality. If you struggle to know where pop ended and rock began then the sections which distinguish between yacht rock, witch house, ghost step and disco-not-disco may make you dizzy but some of the compilations of forgotten soul, funk, garage and psychedelia classics are worth a long look and listen. The box set of Chic 12” singles at £35 should be on everyone’s Christmas list.

Forbidden Planet on Oldham Street has a massive selection of merchandise from comic books, films, TV shows and games. It’s an endless source of wonderful gifts for any child, teenager or adult who is obsessed by sci-fi, fantasy or horror. This year’s must have item is anything even vaguely undead. You can get acceptably ghoulish Living Dead Dolls from £24.99, but fans of The Walking Dead will be desperate for a model of the series’ cult hero Michonne together with her zombie pets (£29.99). Just under half that price is a The Walking Dead zombie gelatine mould. Not as classy, but guaranteed fun.

Two of our favourite bookshops are in the Northern Quarter- Magma on Oldham Street specialises in books (and lots of other stuff) on art, graphics, photography and fashion. But take care. If you love arty books you may never leave. Travelling Man on Dale Street is a lovely little shop selling everything for the geek in your life and probably a little bit more. The staff are particularly friendly and helpful. Go there.

For a refuelling stop, try Teacup (Thomas Street) for its range of loose leaf teas and cakes. If you’re in need of something more than delicious desserts to line your stomach for a busy day of Christmas shopping, try the breakfast options instead. The eggs benedict is delicious and filling, perfect for starting the day right without feeling too heavy and sluggish to battle the crowds. A smallish pot of rosebud tea costs £3.95 but free top-ups make the price easier to swallow.

Try the Cookie Monster, which comes topped with whipped cream and a cookie on top at £4.

If you fancy a cocktail or glass of wine, head to The Blue Pig (High Street) or Bluu (Thomas Street). Also on Thomas Street, TV21, the American style bar and diner, has just brought out its new menu. Lots of tasty Tex Mex and comfort food here. If you’re looking for a pint in a traditional pub, try the Tib Street Tavern.

For your entertainment needs over Christmas, there’s nowhere like Fopp (Brown Street off Market Street).When you first visit Fopp you’ll wonder what the catch is. But there isn’t one.

As wide a variety of music and film as most specialist shops, Fopp are also cheaper than the competition with classic albums or DVDs available for as little as £3. It’s always a tricky business finding something they will like but haven’t already got but box sets are always worth a gamble. This is where Fopp really delivers. If you want to get something extra special, Portal 2003 Vintage Port at £50 a bottle will be an intense and aromatic addition to your favourite relative’s festive excesses.

If you really feel you know someone well enough to buy them that one extra special item of clothing they

can’t afford not to wear, then we suggest you seek counselling. If you are really are going to go for it, however, then Hobbs on New Cathedral Street (and Whistles, at the lonely end of King Street), has a range of fashion that is stunningly stylish.

They are expensive, however, so be afraid and may your god be with you.

Down at The Corn Exchange there’s delicious authentic Italian food at Salvi’s - perfect for a coffee break or lunch. Salvi’s is also a deli so it’s great for gifts for Italian food lovers, too. If Salvi’s is full, which it often is, there’s a choice of ten restaurants across the road at The Printworks.

A five minute walk from Victoria Station (turn right at the Arena) is Litecraft on Bury New Road. There’s a fabulous range of lights and accessories here. Look out for eyeball table lamps, a great addition to any retro home, featuring a classic shape with a contemporary glossy finish.

Perfect for a bachelor pad or any retro style home. Originally priced at £24, these little gems are now down to £19.

Heading back along Deansgate, Molton Brown in St. Ann’s Square is another class act when it comes to cosmetics.

Style and presentation feel as important here as the contents. This is no bad thing at Christmas, however, and they have a cleverly conceived and delivered idea in Bathing Treasures.

There’s no shortage of jewellers in this part of town. If you’re looking for a special piece of jewellery for a special person, Wave in the Royal Exchange Arcade has a great range of rings, necklaces, watches, ear rings and bracelets If you want to buy a ring as a surprise gift but don’t know the ring size of the person you are buying for, buy the ring they have in stock. If it doesn’t fit, take it back unworn and they will have a brand new one made in the correct size or adjust it at no extra cost.

Try Annies on Old Bank Street off St Ann’s Square for a relaxing afternoon tea in sumptuous surroundings then into the elegant Barton Arcade for Jeffery-West, a boutique for modern men who want shoes with old fashioned quality and service, Jill Black for

And because it’s indoors, you don’t have to worry about the Manchester weather.

Worth passing a few pubs for are The Britons Protection and Peveril of the Peak, both on Great Bridgewater Street.

For fine Italian food in beautiful

surroundings on Oxford Street, Don Giovanni’s (near St Peter’s Square) is a popular destination, not just for theatre and concert-goers and it’s not as expensive as it looks! A function room is available for private parties and corporate events.

Fresco Freddo’s gelateria is worth walking down Oxford Street for, even in the middle of winter. Superb gelati, tastier than ice cream and less fattening, too. Go on, treat yourself.

On Whitworth Street opposite the Ritz is Dog Bowl, Manchester’s coolest bowling venue, offering five full length lanes of gleaming wood, an imaginative Tex Mex-inspired restaurant and the top quality bar you would expect from Black Dog Ballroom.

And for something a bit different on New Year’s Eve, check out the Hip Hop extravaganza with local vinyl legend DJ Woody. Tickets are just £8 in advance for bowling, a glass of fizz and canapés plus some of the best music you’ve heard this year. Happy New Year! 

THE LITTLE NICHE This is a lovely, oldie worldie shop with a picturesque shop window, like a scene from a land in Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree. My favourite finds here have to be the cute metalwork cats, dogs and frogs card holders. At £4 each, they would make a charming and jovial addition to any desktop!

Also, beautiful stained glass lanterns at £6.98 and £15 a piece were an unusual and memorable find.

CYBER DOG Going into Cyber Dog is like going into a nightclub. The mental ultraviolet lighting and super forward music made me feel like having an impromptu rave around the stock!

Pacman & Space Invader ice cube trays caught my eye at £6 and £7-perfect for any gamer. A unique colour splash trilby at £20 and baseball cap at £22 are cutting edge, mixing old styles with the fresh and futuristic. Also, vinyl-style coasters at £10 a box make a super gift for any DJ or music lover. What’s not to like?

WAXWORKS Waxworks upstairs has wonderful vinyls and CDs converted into wall clocks and cult classic singers on clock faces which make a smashing gift. If you hunt around I’m sure you’ll find one to suit the person you have in mind and the artist they’re into. Prices start at £15 or 2 for £25. Brilliant gifts making great all-rounders for those who may be stuck for ideas!

The French Market on King Street has proved popular in past years with the market’s nocturnal clientele.

It’s been given a full makeover this year, complete with new chalets and a re-designed layout that brings a traditional Gallic feel to the city centre street.

Exchange Square has a much larger selection of stalls, taking advantage of a closed Corporation Street as well as a completely new site on Corporation Street itself, for one year only!

Returning to Exchange Square is the beautifully crafted 16-metre high windmill crowning the ever popular bratwurst stand, as well the Christmas Vintage Lounge – a raised stage that hosts a tea room, cocktail bar and microbrewery, as well as live music and live broadcasts throughout the festive season.

Close by, Exchange Street and New Cathedral Street welcome back the coffee house and covered German beer house for a second year.

Each market boasts the finest in gift ideas, including jewellery, ceramics, handmade toys, puppets, clocks, glassware, and a market favourite – the limited edition Manchester Christmas Market coffee and Gluhwein mugs.

THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS Fifteen years ago, Manchester became the first UK city to bring continentalstyle markets over from Europe.

This year’s Christmas markets are bigger and better than ever with over 300 stalls spread over nine sites, including a one-year-only market on Corporation Street, a much expanded site in Exchange Square and the return of the ever popular weekend markets on King Street, which offer an everchanging selection of stalls.

This year, the Christmas Markets have minted thousands of special shillings, each with a value of two pounds, that can be used as a fun currency at one of the stalls or kept as a memento.

I found myself pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced some of the goods for sale actually are. Totally spoilt for choice and thrilled at the selection of unusual, well made, quality pieces and handcrafted pieces on offer that very easily fit in with my £20 or under budget!

EXCHANGE SQUARE There are beautiful, real driftwood clocks made from salvaged wood (£18£20) at the Dry Dock stall. These add a charming and personal touch to any home, bringing back memories of ice creams, smiles and boat trips from warm and cheerful times on soft and sandy shores.

The handmade soaps, candles and skin creams at Pringle & Fairweather are uplifting with gift sets from £13.98. They contain soothing, natural products and fragrances reminiscent of hazy summers in an English country garden. Perfect for mums everywhere seeking a mini retreat in the home!

You can select any four tasty handmade cheeses for £10 at The Saddleworth Cheese Company stand run by the lovely Mark Revell and Sean Wilson. Perfect for a hamper for any cheese lover.

Cute and novel Kitty luggage/bag name tags at £3 each from Mele Cat! Perfect for cat lovers and children alike. Also, Manga Kitty pencil cases at £8 each, purses at £5 and bags from £12-£15.

Beautiful pashminas and scarves to choose from at £5 each from the scarves stall next to Mele Cat. Beautiful Hansel & Gretel gingerbread houses- small- from £6. Lots of detail, very pretty and well made.

Selfridges’ stall has lovely helpful staff and a wonderful selection of gifts under £20, such as a beautifully wrapped pannetone for £18.99, colourful biscuit barrels at £14.99, shortbread carousels for £9.99, bespoke DIY yummy gingerbread men at £6.99, musical wooden fire trucks with chocolate coins for £10.99, and wooden musical trains with chocolate coins at £11.99. Children’s dresses are £19.99 at the BabyLicious stand. They really have some beautiful quality pieces, all sorts from tutus to booties at £2.99 a pair- perfect for any mini ballerina!

ST ANNS SQUARE Lots of Gluhwein here, plus chocolate strawberries, jewellery and hog roasts galore! There’s also a singing (but sadly not ringing) tree, which seems to have replaced last year’s singing moose head.

The Holzspielzug wooden toy stall has lots of wooden crafts from nutcrackers to jigsaws. All beautiful and reasonably priced gifts for children including hanging mobiles at £12 and a Noah’s Ark mobile at £14.00. You can make up children’s names and at £1.50 a letter, it would be rude not to!

One Little Seed Designs has lots of cute and vintage style jewellery and crafts. Divine pin brooches at £3.00 each, retro handmade cushions for £10 and flower broaches at £4.50. Must see!

BRAZENNOSE STREET At the Silver Needles stall, you can pick up faux fur headbands for £15 which are bang on trend. Super stylish, warm and cosy this winter.

They are so in demand and are enough to make Cruella Deville jealous and the Snow Queen melt!

SHOPS: I love Kendal’s (House of Fraser ), especially at Christmas. It’s so handy for me. I don’t have to drive, park or even walk very far and I know I’ll always find something for every occasion. The new refurbishment is fantastic and has made a real difference.

I’m not a very adventurous eater and am always really proud of myself when I try something new; I’ve never had a meal at Australasia that I haven’t enjoyed. I love this area of Manchester; it’s got a great feeling about it. The Christmas ice rink and the summer films are fantastic. Twenty years ago I worked on Quay Street and at the courts; I remember when the plan for Spinningfields was first talked about and to see the plan come to life is amazing. I recently did a tour of Manchester and have to say showing them around Spinningfields made me really proud of Manchester.

My personal wish list is focused on the house this year so it’s quite boring. Seeing properties all the time makes me want to constantly improve our home. I’m lucky that now that my daughter is growing up, she points my husband in the right direction for presents! This year I’m doing Christmas dinner for the whole family and it’s pretty scary as I’m not the greatest cook in the world. But I do have high standards, so I’m praying it all goes well!

My wish for the business would be to see the renewed activity in the market continue and for lots of new clients to come and talk to us. There’s lots of good news to talk about for a change. In February, I will have been trading for 20 years in Manchester and I’ve got a really good feeling for 2014. I would love to talk to all those landlords and vendors who have a property that isn’t making them money and show them how they can. I’m delighted to see all the new clients we have coming to Manchester from all over the world, many buying without even visiting. That goes a long way to show how well placed we are on the world map and how much confidence people have in the property market.

For Manchester, I hope to see more of the empty shops filled. I’d love to see King Street come to life again and to see more cranes in the air, which means more apartments for me to sell and rent. It’s happening already and I think 2014 will be the year we all see some reward for the last few years of hard work.
