This booklet is a collection of useful information and contacts for Scout Active Support Units (SASUs), Activity Teams, Campsites and events which offer exciting opportunities for Scouts in Leicestershireshire.

We hope it will bring more exposure to the wealth of support and resources available and inspire Scout Groups around the County to get involved with fun activities available on their doorstep.

What we do?

Who are we?

We are at present a small Leicestershire team of two who have been Scouting for in excess of 25 years. We are part of the organisational team for a new National SAS Group called Bushscout. We are here to offer activities for programme nights to sectional groups from Beavers to Network.

We are also here to enhance basics training to create and offer a greater experience to our young people via training to sectional leaders.

Being a newly formed County Group we are looking for additional leaders who hold an active interest in such areas to create a team. Please email us if you would like to discuss this opportunity.

We teach knife, axe, saw and froe use, fire lighting sessions and the Kelly Kettle Challenge. We work with all sections within Groups along with District and County events. We are here to offer the basic skills opportunities for learning, whilst having fun.

All the basics our young people desire and leaders require. We also offer backwoods cooking including skinning, gutting and plucking when in season.

Who are we?

Scout Bands is all about music and having fun. The bands teach participants to read music, play a variety of wind and percussion instruments and work together as a team to perform in public at a variety of events. Bands also march in both a military traditional style and show band style.

What we do?

How is the activity good for scouts and their development? Enables scouting members to learn new skills, meet new people, interact with people of all ages and backgrounds. Helps increase confidence and creates a sense of belonging. Working as part of a team and having own self discipline to get better and learn more is a worthwhile life lesson to learn at a young age.

Do the instructors get specific training or qualifications? Currently there is no specific training for instructors within bands. However, all helpers, instructors and leaders bring their own ability, experience and skills to teaching. Some have music

qualifications acquired externally. Outside of Scouting there are organisations that teach and run training sessions run by marching band organisations. In addition some give the opportunity for members to achieve qualifications.

Who is the activity suitable for?

The activity is suitable for everyone.

It is an activity suitable for all ages, backgrounds and all sections of Scouting.

Even if people do not want to play an instrument, or march, there are jobs and things to do and help with behind the scenes. As a self funded organization all people involved are volunteers e.g. making/ arranging uniforms, equipment etc.

What size groups can be accommodated?

For ‘taster’ sessions, to experience bands, any size section/group up to 40.

Where and when is it available? (i.e. At the group meeting place, at certain campsites or sports centres, is it seasonal).

Leicestershire currently has five bands.

All bands meet all year round, at least once a week. This increases as they get busier with events and performances i.e. summer. The

Bands rehearse, and meet, at their respective Scout Groups.

However, if a section or Group would like a band to visit them to allow their members to see what a band does and have a go on the instruments, and meet the people involved, bands will travel across the County to any Group.

Are there any regular (annual) events?

Each year the bands take part in marching band competitions organized by the British Youth Band Association (BYBA) and Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association (TYMBA).

Bands also take part in Galas, fetes and country fairs in order to raise money for the band, Other events are ceremonial St Georges Day and Remembrance.

Recently the bands have worked together to perform a show called Sound Off. All the members perform together and make new friends in the process whilst performing to a large audience. These shows have taken place at Curve theatre and De Montfort Hall.

What it costs?

Some bands charges each member from 50p to ÂŁ2 subs each week to cover scout capitation fees and towards costs of instruments/uniforms/transport etc. Should a Group/Section wish to invite the band along to run an evening then each would ask for a donation to cover transport costs.

Can it be made available to participants with special needs or disabilities?

Yes, there are no restrictions.

How far in advance would you ideally want people to book activities?

If a leader wishes to book a band for a ‘taster’ evening then one months notice is required.

If an individual wishes to see what the bands do then they simply contact the respective main band leader and can arrange a visit to see how a band practice, before making any decisions about whether to commit.

How can people get involved if they would like to volunteer as a helper or become an instructor?

By contacting the Band Master to discuss.

G N I V A C M A E T Y T I ACTIV Caving isn’t every one’s cup of tea, there’s the mud, tight squeezes, water and darkness that is however what draws many people to the sport.

What we do?

What is the difference between a cave, a pothole and a mine?

Caves are walking passages, potholes are normally vertical needing ladders to enter and mines are man made. Different permits are required for the different types, our team has instructors capable of leading al sorts of trips Will you come and see my troop?

It’s normal that before you come caving that you’ll want to meet the instructors, our Troop nights make an excellent evening activity. A slide show and talk to your Scouts will get them all wanting to come, and can put worried parents at ease. It gives them chance to see some of the kit and explains how they can achieve the first step in their caver’s badge.

So where about will we go?

Derbyshire trips are normally used for beginners. To see if you can cope with being under ground we’ll take you down a simple system in Matlock Bath. If you like this then we’ll arrange another trip for you to a more demanding cave introducing water, ladders, squeezes and longer underground.

Weekend trips are held to Yorkshire or Mendip, where you will enter two cave systems on the Saturday and then one on the Sunday.

Are there any age restrictions?

We cave with anyone from 10 until they can’t walk to the entrance. We do however point out that small people may get cold and we may have to bring the group out of the cave if they do get too cold. It’s never happened yet on a trip. We will tailor trips for Explorers and Network where required.

We have a Scout with a disability can they come caving?

Talk to us, we have taken Guide Leaders with callipers, visually impaired and even someone with walking sticks into a cave before now.

Costs include a helmet, harness, lamp and instruction.

Weekend trips include bunk hut accommodation and food. All you have to do it get them there!

What it costs?

Who are we?

We are a group of passioate and very enthusiastic leaders with many years of rock climbing exsperiance whom also hold rock climbing and abseiling permits with some of us having national gorverning body qualifications.

These are the “The Climbing Wall Award” and “The Single Pitch Award”. For us its all about climbing and abseiling being carried out whilst having fun and safely.

What we do?

When possible, we provide climbing and abseiling sessions at campsites and on natural rock outcrops. We also run the County Climbing camp annually in May and provide our services to the County Cub camp, County Scout camp, Splash camp and Womble each year. We also run the off site climbing for big events like Peak 2015 and Charnwood 2016.

For a session we charge £6.75 per head with a minimum charge of £120 per day. (max 40 climbers taken a day) These cost are due to the fabric climbing equipment (ropes, slings, harnesses and helmets) having to be replaced every 5 years and the aliminuim climbing equipment having to be replaced every 10 years.

Who are we?

Leicestershire Scouts Mountain Bike Activity Team has been established to offer guided rides and skills training to Leicestershire Scout Groups or Districts. The team leaders have been British Cycling trained to Mountain Bike Leadership Level 2.

We currently have a range of bikes and a trailer to bring the fun to a venue near you or your camp, or alternatively book into Willesley Campsite, where the Mountain Bike Team is based and set up to run biking activities, including using the nearby Hicks Lodge Cycle Centre.

What we do?

Basic mountain bike skills session A typical 1-2 hour skills session will include a safety briefing, cycle “M-check”, bike handling and balance skills and/or a brief ride; ideally this would be at your campsite or meeting place, if you have the space on adjacent car park or playing field, otherwise we can agree a suitable venue. Highly recommended for District camps.

Led mountain bike rides Often we find that young people just like to jump on their bikes and ride – this is great, and we can help you by guiding rides in many locations across the Midlands in all sorts of terrain, teaching some important core skills along the way.

We can supply bikes and safety equipment and take your unit, troop or network on short or long rides. We will supply risk assessments and have experience in managing groups on roads too, always making group safety the top priority (shortly followed by maximum fun!).

Leaders skills training Leaders do not need an adventurous activities permit to lead bike rides in Terrain 0. However we feel the skills of mountain bike leadership should be understood before any of our helpers lead activities with County bikes. We therefore offer free mountain bike skills training to all leaders and occasional helpers. At the end of this half-day you will receive an “MBAT Permit” authorising you to support activity team events or hire our bikes. Contact us for details of the next training day.

Terrain 1 and Terrain 2 Mountain Bike Adventurous Activity Permit assessment Subject to holding a Terrain 1, or Terrain 2, Hillwalking permit. Contact the County Adviser for more information.

Cycle hire The bikes are available to hire by any Group, so long as a leader has received the leaders skills permit.

All costs subject to confirmation and an additional charge for transport of bikes to and from venue at County mileage rates.

Who are we?

We are all scout leaders with Hill Walking permits based across the county and assessors with the nationally recognised qualification of Mountain Leader Training.

What we do?

We organise High Adventure each year and run the Mountain Team for this event. We will come out to your group to advice on kit for the hills or any other queries relating to hill walking. We run one day assessments for Terrain 1 areas in Derbyshire regularly and two day assessments for Terrain 2 areas in Snowdonia through the summer period.

Some of us also assess D of E expeditions.

If you have groups or leaders that require advice or training for hill walking then let us know as we are always keen to help.

What it costs?

For High Adventure see the website, Face book page or booklet. For D of E usually fuel costs and any camp fees.

What is Hillwalking?

Hillwalking is the movement on foot over hills and mountains. It doesn’t require any specialist equipment such as climbing ropes (although there are occasions when they can be useful) and can take place in varying terrains from gentle slopes and valleys through to wild remote areas. Hillwalking doesn’t have to be about climbing peaks.

It can be just as much about enjoying the terrain you are walking in and developing navigational skills.

What is a Hillwalking Permit?

The adventurous activity permit scheme is designed to ensure that only people with the relevant skills and experience lead adventurous activities for the young people. Therefore all activities classed as adventurous can only be led by someone holding the appropriate permit. Additionally young people (under 18) can take part in adventurous activities for themselves with personal activity permits.

Describes terrain which meets one of the following criteria: a. Meets all the following criteria: • Is below 500 metres above sea level; & • Within 30 minutes travelling time from a road which can take an ordinary road- going ambulance, building which is occupied (such as a farm) or another means of summoning help (such as a phone box); & • Contains no element of scrambling b. Is a road, or path adjacent to a road, where you would expect to see traffic.

Terrain 1 (One)

Describes terrain which meets all of the following criteria: a. Meets any of the following criteria: • Is between 500 and 800 metres above sea level or: • Is between 30 minutes and 3 hours travelling time from a road which can take an ordinary road-going ambulance, or a building which is occupied (such as a farm) or another means of calling help (such as a phone box).

And b. Contains no scrambling.

And c. Is not a road, or path adjacent to a road, where you would expect to see traffic.

And d. Is not defined as Terrain Two.

Terrain 2 (Two)

Describes terrain which meets all of the following criteria: a. Meets any of the following criteria: • Is over 800 metres above sea level or • Lies more than three hours travelling time from a road which can take an ordinary road-going ambulance or a building which is occupied (such as a farm) or another means of calling help (such as a telephone box, or; • Contains an element of scrambling And b. Is not a road, or path adjacent to a road, on which you would expect to see traffic.

Specialist Terrain

When in terrain or using skills that have not been assessed for a Terrain Two hill walking permit (such as glaciers), then specific approval is required for the activity from the responsible Commissioner based on advice from someone with knowledge and experience of the activity.

Terrain Zero requirements:

You do not need a permit for any scouting activity with in this area.

Terrain One requirements:

You will need to apply for a permit to lead or supervise scouting activities in this and terrain two areas. Full details can be found in the following document available from the scout web site. Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme - Applicants’ Guide (FS120101).

The technical assessment generally takes the form of a days hill walking with the assessor and the overriding element is that of micro navigation. In other words you will need to demonstrate that you can always locate yourself on the map whatever the conditions. Each section of the walk will be looking for a small map feature such as a particular contour, a spot height or perhaps a bend in a stream and the distances involved vary from about 100m to several kilometres. Each applicant will take a turn locating the next feature and will lead the group to that feature. On completion of the leg everyone is required to point out where they are. You will need to use a compass for direction and be able to calculate distance covered by time and pacing.

There will be some steep ground and probably rough ground covered so again you need to be comfortable moving up or down steep ground. Basic fitness only is required as there is never a rush on these days and a valid first response should always be a minimum first aid requirement on the hill.

Terrain Two requirements:

This will be the same as terrain one but the navigation is likely to be in a more demanding area with a lot of up and down all day and will take place over a weekend.

If conditions are favourable an introduction to a scramble route will be undertaken.

The requirements of rope work will be demonstrated and tested by the assessor.

Since you are likely to be more remote from help, a better first aid qualification such as first aid at work should be held by someone in the group.

NSRA Qualified Instructors All our scouting instructors are qualified to conduct sessions to the National Small Bore Rifle Association standard.

to plan and undertake this badge for your section.

Who are we?

We are a Scout Canoeing club called “Hot Doggers” that meets on Monday evenings from April to September 615-8.30pm at the LOPC for a range of canoe, kayak and bell boating activities.

We provide fun sessions for explorers, Scouts, cubs and beavers either in Opens, Kayaks or Bell boats.

We also provide a range of 1* and 2* BCU courses for groups or individuals wishing to undertake various badges and awards.

What we do?

As well as fun sessions and awards we also provide training for leaders who want to gain their adventurous activity permits in canoe or kayak which can be arranged on request.

Pool Sessions

LSWA are running pool sessions at Cossington Street baths on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 7.45pm.

Participants should arrive at 6.45pm for a briefing.

Great Fun for All Sections Beavers, cubs, scouts & explorers can all book for either fun sessions or more serious training opportunities.

The warm, clean pool environment means that you can practice wet skills, such as rolling, with confidence.

Costs £5 per person.

Block bookings: £45.00 for groups of 12/13.

All equipment is provided but it’s normally a good idea to wear a t-shirt type top, on top of swimming costumes in the pool to help avoid getting gold once wet!

Beavers & Cubs For beavers and cubs, the all year round pool sessions gives them access to water activities during the winter months when it would be impossible to do so in the outside environment.

Scouts & Explorers Scouts and explorers can take the opportunity to become water confident in the comfort of the warm pool and improve paddling skills. Those wishing to learn more advance techniques and rolling can do so.

W O R R NA G N I T BOA Canal Narrowboats Narrow boating is a great activity for Scouting. It is best suited to members aged 8 or over (Cubs) as they are physically able to help with the steering of a boat and can help to operate locks etc. It can be undertaken as a day, evening or overnight activity. There are rules restricting the number of persons who can be on board a boat at anyone time – this is normally 12 but can be lower. It can only be more on commercially operated boats.

Narrow boating is considered to be an ‘Adventurous Activity’ by the Scout Association. The person /leader in charge should hold the relevant permit. The cost of boating varies according to the length of the activity.

A weeks boat hire for 12 persons costs about £1200 at Easter.

Commercial day boat hire is about £150 per day.

Who are we?

LSWA have our own sailing section that meets at Roundhills Sailing Association where groups or individuals may come along for experience. Groups may also book evening sailing sessions for all sections.

What we do?

A typical session includes a safety briefing and a brief introduction into the controls of the boat. Then the Scouts/Guides are able to go out in the boats with or without a Royal Yachting Association (RYA)/Scout qualified instructors.

Sessions can be at weekends or weekday evening and are available for all sections. We meet at Roundhills Sailing Association.

We also run courses to enable you to achieve RYA qualifications and these can be used towards Chief Scout Awards and Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes.

We also support county events such as cub camp, splash camp and Charnwood and are currently looking at supporting Womble too!

What will your Scout will need?

Who are we?

Adventures Off shore is registered charity, a member of the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO) and a District of the Scouting movement. We have been safely taking young people sailing since 1964 and now operate two 15 metre ketches out of Ipswich which are crewed and maintained entirely by volunteers.

Our Sail Training Programme is open to everyone, from those who have never been on the water before to experienced sailors wanting to try something new. Ocean Scout and Off shore Scout, our purpose built Oyster yachts, have 14 berths each and are fully equipped for long passages and ocean sailing. A voyage with us off ers the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and have a real adventure. Our programme helps to develop confi dence, character and team spirit as well as helping individuals fulfi l their personal potential.

What we do?

We offer a range of cruises, from day or evening tasters and weekends to week-long

trips to or around the continent. We can tailor a trip to suit your needs and your budget, whether you are a group or an individual. A typical weekend cruise involves spending two nights on board and off ers a great opportunity to give sailing a try and to learn the basics while exploring the east coast.

With a choice of havens for the night as well as rivers and backwaters to explore there is plenty to experience whatever the conditions. A fully qualifi ed skipper and mate will show you the ropes and keep you safe at all times. You’ll be involved in all aspects of the voyage including navigation, helming and sail handling as well the domestic side of things. A weekend like this would enable you to gain a Start Yachting qualifi cation, while two weekends could lead to a Competent Crew certifi cate.

Who are we?

Leicestershire Sub Aqua Unit offers affordable scuba diving & snorkelling to all members of the Scout & Guide Associations.

We meet between 8-10pm on Thursdays in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. All of our instructors are nationally qualified by the British Sub Aqua Club ( BSAC) for scuba and snorkelling and, as members of the scouting movement, all our adult members are fully CRB checked.

What we do?

Scuba Try Dives A try dive is the best way to find out what it is like to scuba dive. A Try Dive is completed in one evening. We start in the classroom for about an hour looking at the equipment and diving techniques. A pool session follows, also an hour, where you get the opportunity to scuba dive in the 3m deep pool with our qualified instructors who will help you get maximum fun and enjoyment from your first scuba dive. 4-6 people is the ideal number for a Try Dive session however it is possible to cover larger groups please get in touch for further information.

Experience Snorkelling: This is the ideal taster ‘Try Snorkelling’ session’. Experience snorkelling is designed to be fun yet at the same time building in water confidence. We start in the classroom looking at the snorkelling equipment and how to use it. A pool session follows with in water guidance on how to use the equipment from qualified instructors, and usually ends with some in water games using fins masks and snorkels.

Scuba Courses - BSAC Ocean Diver This entry level course provides you with the essential knowledge and skills needed for open water diving. Learning to dive is all about knowing how to use your equipment properly and safely. The Ocean Diver training course starts on preparing you for this in the safety of a swimming pool or sheltered water and then introducing you to open water in a controlled and safe manner.

LSSAU offers a full range of BSAC scuba courses after Ocean Diver – you could become one our future Instructors.

Snorkel Courses - BSAC Dolphin Snorkeller Dolphin Snorkeller is designed to introduce snorkelling to children with seven progressive fun sessions. Each session is named after a different dolphin and completion of a session results in the award of a Dolphin sticker. Each Dolphin session can be as long, or short as required by the snorkellers taking part, their on going snorkelling safety and fun being all important. LSSAU offers a full range of BSAC snorkelling courses after Dolphin Snorkeller – you could become one our future Instructors.

What is Classification of Waters?

All waters used for Scouting activities must be classified as C, B1, B2, B3 or A in accordance Rule 9.44b.

Classifications are:

Class C Safe inland waters (including inland lakes, lochs, rivers, canals or other stretches of placid water) which are less than 100 metres wide throughout the region being used and where surface turbulence is limited to the regular waves produced by wind action (this includes slow flowing water such as rivers and canals where the flow causes little effect); and swimming pools.

Class B1 Sheltered inland waters and other sheltered water where currents and tides create no real danger.

Class B2 The sea up to one mile from the shore, but excluding more dangerous waters close inshore; more sheltered parts of estuaries; large inland lakes and lochs; inland waters British Canoe Union Grade 2.

Class B3 The sea up to three miles from the shore, but excluding more dangerous waters close inshore; busy commercial ports, exposed parts of estuaries; inland waters British Canoe Union Grade 3.

Class A Open sea more than three miles from the shore, and other dangerous waters close inshore; inland waters British Canoe Union Grade 4 and above.

Training Water A County Commissioner may designate any water as Training Water for Local Groups and approve a variation in the published classification and defined areas for the named Groups.

Group or Individual International Links?

International contact helps young people develop an awareness of life outside of their own immediate sphere, and assists them in recognising and respecting the differences that exist between the many nations and cultures of the world.

The International Links Scheme offers a means of communicating with other Scouts abroad and provides an international experience without necessarily having to leave town. The International Links Scheme is keen to initiate contact between Scouts of all ages across national borders.

How do they get started?

What’s it all about?

As a member of the Scout Association young people can achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards (DofE) as well as Scouting Awards. This is done through being a member of an Explorer Scout Unit or the Scout Network.

Fill in form and send with enrolment fee to Leicestershire Scouts DofE Adviser.

They will be then logged in to edofe and sent their Welcome Pack.

The Chief Scouts Platinum, Diamond and the Queen’s Scout Award have similar requirements to the Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE Awards.

Why do both?

By doing both you can gain twice the recognition for the efforts you put in and it has been shown to make people stand out from the crowd when it comes to job and University interviews! It gives them something to put on CV’s and shows the skills they have developed.

DofE Programmes Anyone aged between 14 and 24 can do DofE Award at one of three progressive levels. There are four sections at Bronze and Silver and five at Gold.

Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community

•

Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.

•

Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.

•

Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.

•

At Gold level, participant must do an additional fifth Residential Section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.

Doing the Activities They make their choices for each section and upload evidence onto edofe and their assessors sign off each section when completed.

Achieving the Award When all sections are completed they are submitted to their Leader who then submits to DofE Adviser for approval.

Celebrating Achievement At Bronze and Silver Level they will receive a DofE pin badge, Scout Cloth Badge and they will be invited to a County Presentation to receive their Certificate.

At Gold level their DofE pin badge and Scout cloth badge can be presented by the County Commissioner (or representative) at a local venue of their choice, the Certificate is presented at St James’s Palace , London

by Duke of Edinburgh or Earl of Wessex.

Young Leaders Training Scheme

Young Leader Training is available to anyone aged between 14 and 18 working in the leadership teams of a beaver scout colony, cub scout pack, or a scout troop but they must also be members of an Explorer Unit (although they do not need to be active Members).

The Scheme itself is broken into Modules (A to K) and Missions (1 - 4).

The Modules include various management skills, leadership styles, dealing with bad behaviour, Programme planning and First Aid. The Missions use those skills in the Section environment in which you work.

Upon completion of all the Modules and Missions a Young Leader Belt Buckle is awarded.

The young leaders scheme can help you develop and grow as an individual.

You can make a valuable contribution to your community and give service to others

The scheme helps fulfil the service elements of the Chief Scouts Platinum and Diamond Awards, the Queens Scout Award and the D of E Awards.

The Modules will also give you a head start on your Adult Leader Training should you decide to become an Adult Leader at 18.

About the campsite

Hinckley District Scouts’ campsite at Fox Coverts has provided camping opportunities for young people since 1956. We are located between the villages of Kirkby Mallory and Newbold Verdon in the East Midlands county of Leicestershire but also close to good road links. Covering nearly 16 acres of woodland, there are campsite areas to suit both group camps and patrol camps including secluded sites in wooded glades which are ideal for backwoods camping and constructing bivouacs.

Fox Coverts provides a number of activities suitable for all age groups and there are additional off-site activities available nearby.

The site also makes an good base for hiking activities and has several public footpaths near the campsite.

We welcome bookings from Scout and Guide groups, schools, Duke of Edinburgh and other recognised youth groups but we cannot currently accept private whole site bookings.

About the campsite

Holwell Pastures is a field camp site located to the north of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. Melton Mowbray is well known for its famous Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese.

The Camp Site is owned and managed by Melton District Scouts and provides an ideal opportunity for groups of youths to enjoy back to basic camping and the outdoors. It can easily cater for Beaver Scout Sleepovers to Explorer Expeditions and D of E. Holwell Pastures is situated approximately 3 Miles from Melton Mowbray itself, and is in beautiful and tranquil countryside. The field is subdivided into 2 areas enabling smaller groups to share the site if necessary.

The site benefits from a fully equipped kitchen and indoor meeting/eating area, showers, classroom/indoor accommodation with segregated rooms for leaders and newly refurbished disabled toilet and shower facilities.

About the campsite

John’s Lee Wood Campsite covers 33 acres of woodland within the National Forest area.

There are 24 clearings in the woodland for camping pitches & these vary in size from Patrol to Group camp. The site is owned by the City of Leicester Scout Districts & is open throughout the year, except for Christmas weekend, to most organisations that hold public liability insurance. The site is staffed by volunteer warden teams, on an 8 week rota system, with a separate team of volunteers to staff the Providore. There is another team of retired staff who work on the site in the week.

Facilities

There is the Alan Gutteridge Cabin, which has 30bunk beds; Harry Walker Cabin, which has 10 bunk beds and room in the hall for up to 30 on camp beds etc..

The Collier Hut, which sleeps 12 on bunk beds and 2 more in a leaders room off of the kitchen.

The Dick n Phil Curtis Cabin, named after 2 war heroes who died in the Second World War, and was donated by Sir Arthur Curtis. There are 2 log shelters which each sleep 6.

There are 23 different sized camping areas that are all named after animals and birds.

There is a newly rebuilt Chapel and Fire bell. The bell was made in the Taylor Bell Foundry.

We have a large toilet block with token operated hot showers, and hot and cold water taps at the washbasins. There is a hot water tap in each toilet with free hot water for groups to fetch hot water for washing up. There is an “open all hours” toilet behind the Collier Hut for evening visitors and Collier Hut users.

About the campsite

The camp site at Oaks in Charnwood has been associated with Scouting in Loughborough District for many years. The field and woodland was owned by Miss.

Clarke who kindly allowed the District to use it for camps, competitions and other training purposes. The hut was the home of the Oaks Scout Troop whose leader Mr C. L. Bowler acted as warden for the site and it is thanks to his efforts that we are now the owners of this excellent facility.

Miss Clarke died in 1972 and left to the Loughborough Scout Council the hut and the adjacent stack yard and also gave the Council first option on the purchase of the field and woodland Both the leaders and the Executive Committee were unanimous in their decision that we should proceed with the purchase of both the field and the woodland. The probate value of these was approximately £1800 for ten acres of field and nine acres of woodland. Water is laid on to the top of the field and there is a road at both the top and bottom of the

About the campsite

Ullesthorpe Scout Campsite comprises 8 acres of woodland with 2 camping fields. It is situated in rural Leicestershire which is in the centre of the UK. This site is the South Leicestershire District Campsite and is managed by volunteers from within the district.

Its aim is to provide camping and pack holiday facilities for Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides and Brownies and is also available for other youth groups not only from Leicestershire but from throughout the UK. Due to recent improvements to our facilities, we are now more able to cater for those with physical disabilities.

About the campsite

Willesley Campsite is located 1 mile south west of Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.

It occupies 14 acres of the old Willesley Hall and estate from which part of the original gatehouse is still visible. The site has open fields, patrol areas, a coniferous wood and its own church. It is ideal for many events and activities including Beaver sleepovers, Cub camps, Scout Patrol camping, Family camps and District events. There are two toilet blocks, both with showers. Activities include a 15 metre Climbing and Abseil tower, a rifle range, potholing course, archery range, karting, bouldering wall, High Zip wire, LowZip wire and several others activities.

Sweets and souvenirs are available from the tuck shop. Alter fires are available for campers to use on there own pitches and a campfire circle is located near to the lake.

The gatehouse and the cabin are available for indoor events or accommodation. There are many local attractions that can be visited from the campsite.

Mendip (Caving)

Date: 30th January - 1st February Ran over the weekend of the 30th January the annual caving weekend allows for those that have caved at either the Caving Day in November or on a trip before with the team to gain their caving badge.

Stopping at a traditional caving cottage which features alpine bunks, a large wood burning stove and pig skull Scouts will be fed and watered with plenty of tea and fried breakfast. Saturday night will be a communal meal.

On Saturday Scouts will enter two dry caving systems, learning about their formation, about their kit and basic underground navigation skills. Saturday evening Scouts will be expected to draw a sketch of the cave system which they entered before retiring to bed.

Early Sunday morning scouts will leave to enter their third cave of the weekend where they will get wet. After returning to the hut and cleaning it Scouts will earn their cavers badge. On the way home they normally fall asleep.

High Adventure

Date: 6th - 8th March 2015 High Adventure is a competitive event set in challenging mountainous terrain. You will be transported to a secret location, teams stay overnight at a base camp before setting out to complete an orienteering course on the Saturday morning.

Teams carry all their equipment with them, stopping overnight at a remote top camp on the Saturday night, before returning to base camp on Sunday, completing several challenges along the way. The event is open to teams of Explorer Scouts, Scout Network, or joint teams of Explorer Scouts and Scout Network. The event takes place in the same area for all teams, with separate trophies for each team category and an overall award for the Ultimate High Adventure Team. www.high-adventure.org.uk

Hendon Air Museum Date: 28th February 2015

Each year Leicestershire Cub Scouts & their leaders get together for an enjoyable day out somewhere in England! In 2015 we will all head off down the motorway for Hendon Air Museum.

Each District will organise their own transport, so if you don’t get any info. get in touch with your ADC cubs or District team or failing that ACC Cub Scouts. Entrance to the museum is free so only the cost of a seat on a coach is all you will have to pay.

2011 was the last time we visited the museum and the Cub Scouts (and also some Scouts) were able to gain their Air Activities Badges and this is the aim for 2015 as well. The Air Museum has lots of great exhibits and as well as touring the galleries, Cub Scouts were able to dress up as airmen, have their photos taken beside remarkable planes and have their badges presented by air personnel.

Date: 21st March 2015 The 2015 Beaveree will be held at Moat College, Leicester. This year’s theme is “Around the world in an Archie day!” The Beavers will be visiting different counties and taking part in different activities which are county inspired.

The fun starts at 10am until 5.30pm”ish”, and the cost is £15 for each Beaver, £10 for Beaveree & £5 for Coach Travel – paid through district Not only will the Beaveree exciting a thrilling adventure for all of the Beavers, it was also a brilliant and challenging day for all the Leaders and Young Leaders involved. How about a race circuit !!

We are planning a full activity weekend for Scouts and Explorers To take place at Mallory Race Track, over the weekend of April 17th, 18th, and 19th.

Our aim is to offer participants a full and challenging weekend, Scouts and Explorers will get to choose the activities that they want to do from a large mixture of water and land based options. Mallory has as part of its portfolio, has no less than three lakes, coupled with a huge amount of bot grassland, and hard standing areas, buildings, a go carting track (currently under construction) and of course a full racing track, all of which we intend to fully utilise.

We hope that this will be a great opportunity for Scouts and Explorers From across the County to come together meet new people, make new friends, try new activities and have a camp to remember !!

Skills Camp

Date: 8th - 10th May 2015 This year will be the 5th running of the very successful County Skills Camp and will be held again at Ullesthorpe Scout Campsite over the weekend of May 8th to May 10th This camp is being held to help preserve & instruct all leaders from all areas of Scouting including GSLs, Cub, Beaver and Scout section members and also Young Leaders into the basic scouting skills and covers most aspects of scouting including • Setting up a camp, putting up tents and lightweight camping • Lighting fires, wood properties and backwoods cooking • Using a map and compass, navigation and hiking • Pioneering • The use of an axe and a bow saw.

These six scouting skills bases will be manned by experienced Scouters from Leicestershire and beyond and it is hoped that all course attendees will be Module 18 validated on completion of the course.

Cardboard Box Boat Regatta Date: 6th June 2015

We have all made boat/rafts out of poles and barrels, now its time to test you cardboard making skills!!

Create your own boat Out of carboard and sail it! Have faith cardboard works fine!

Boats may be of any size and shape, but must permit Regatta will be held at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre From 1.00pm till 4.30pm One person to sit or kneel entirely within the boat. All boats must be fully constructed at the event Cost per team will be ÂŁ6 4 - 5 People in a team (for ages 14 - 18) There will be an opportunity for a leaders race.

County Cub Camp

Date: 19th - 21st June 2015 Oaks Campsite (Charnwood) County Cub Camp is an annual activity camp held for Cub Scouts aged 8 – 10 ½ years old.

Traditionally we have a different theme each year, with each District Sub camp building a gateway to their camping area in line with the theme.

Cub Scouts get to choose from approx. 20 different activities for the 10 activity sessions offered. Some of these activities will be off site such as Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Sailing & Mountain Biking. Others will include on-site excitement like air rifles, archery, abseiling etc.

This is also a great camp for leaders to get involved in the activities and meet up with other Leicestershire Leaders.
