Jessica Coleman Staff Writer It’s April, and in Edna, that means it is clean up time again. The City of Edna will hold its sixth annual Clean Sweep on May 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and May 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 404 N. Kleas, under the big water tower. Sheila Miller, code enforcement officer for the City of Edna, began the first clean sweep and said the primary goals of the event are to curb illegal dumping and beautify the city, although there are many reasons to participate, especially if you have old tires laying around. “We accept tires because it
keeps them out of ditches and vacant lots. When you keep old tires at your house, it encourages mosquitos,” said Miller, “Water will collect in them and mosquitos will breed in those tires. They also bring roaches.” Only passenger tires will be accepted. Tractor tires and 18wheeler tires will not be allowed. Along with tires, the city is accepting most items that are too large for residents to put into their blue garbage cans, including mattresses, box springs, furniture, outdoor toys, plumbing fixtures like toilets, appliances, carpet, and car batteries.
