WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to welcome you on behalf of Charades Theatre Company to our production of The Mold that Changed the World.

Founded in 2010, we are a Scottish charity passionate about using the power of theatre to inform and empower communities to acknowledge and take action on important social issues. We are thrilled to be bringing this production to audiences in the United States in the coming weeks, and extremely grateful for the help and support received from some very committed partners.

Tonight's performance features two groups of very commited and talented professionals - our professional principal cast of 'West-End' actors who are fresh from performing a sell-out run of The Mold at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and a talented group of singing scientists and healthcare professionals from the Atlanta area who have given up their evenings and weekends to rehearse with us and form the show's ensemble. We as a touring company are in awe of the experience, knowledge and talent the ensemble bring to the production, and truly humbled to give them this voice to disseminate such an important message.

Finally, I would like to thank Dr Meghan Perry, without whom this project would never have come about.

THE DRUGS DON'T WORK If you or a loved one has had an infection, you will have most likely been prescribed antibiotics. Almost 100 years on from Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin, antibiotics have become the backbone of our modern medical systems. We need them to treat pneumonia, HIV, and tuberculosis.

But these medical marvels are also a victim of their own success. The global over-use of antibiotics mean that they become less effective, making infections more difficult to treat. We call this ‘antimicrobial resistance’, or AMR for short.

We have seen first-hand and fearfully during COVID-19 the impacts of an infection spreading globally, which the world was initially unable to treat. Like the variants we have seen emerging, bacteria are also hardwired to survive. Over time, bugs develop ways to escape the antibiotics that scientists have developed. Before antibiotics, even a simple cut had the potential to kill if it became infected. And for cancer patients who are hospitalised due to infections, antibiotics are the main line of defence.

Imagine going back to a pre-antibiotic age, where caesarian sections, dental treatment or chemotherapy were more dangerous than not having the treatment to start with. This is happening already, in hospitals and in GP surgeries across the UK and the world.

Scientists are working hard to stay one step ahead of the microbes, and healthcare workers are helping patients to receive the right antibiotic at the right time. But, no new classes of antibiotics have been discovered since the 1980s, meaning that our global medicine cabinet is now running empty.

AMR is one of the world’s most existential, but least known, threats. New data shows that over 1.2million deaths were directly caused by AMR in 2019. To put that in perspective, HIV caused 860,000 deaths in the same year. AMR, the silent killer, is the third leading underlying cause of death globally.

This matters to all of us.

It matters to children, who account for 1 in 5 deaths from AMR. It matters to women, including new mothers impacted by hospital acquired infections.

It matters to ethnic minorities, who in some parts of Britain are more likely to contract nasty superbugs.

Tackling AMR and ensuring that every patient who needs treatment can access timely, effective and affordable treatments, is a challenge so great that we all need to pull together to make it happen. Throughout my career, I have used my voice to break ceilings and stereotypes. The Mould That Changed The World gives the ‘silent’ pandemic a platform, starting with the voices of the healthcare workers who see its impacts most.

The arts and sciences have a power to educate and empower audiences, using song to tell the stories behind the statistics. The Mould That Changed The World is pushing boundaries to advocate for action on AMR, and can spark a movement to overcome health inequities locally, nationally, and globally.

We all have our moments when we comprehend the scale and urgency of the AMR crisis. Mine was in 2013 when I was Chief Medical Officer for England and heard the experiences of clinicians who were unable to treat patients. I hope that watching The Mould That Changed The World will be the moment that inspires you to play your part.

From washing our hands, to listening to advice of healthcare workers on when (and when not) to take antibiotics, to sharing what you learn today with others, we can all take small steps to mitigate AMR. Modern medicine depends on all of us.

What's it about?

For those of us working on this show, the question of what it is ‘about’ is easy to answer in some ways, but difficult in others. This is the challenge we faced in endeavouring to re-write the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe version of the show.

In the same breath, we have always been compelled to answer that it is about Alexander Fleming’s discovery of Penicillin and the subsequent overuse of antibiotics which has led us on a path to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). While this is absolutely true - and a global issue that we all need to become more aware of - it’s hardly a thrilling hook to draw crowds of eager audience members. So the task facing us for the re-write was to dig into the question: What is The Mould That Changed The World ‘about’?

To find the answer, it seemed important to ask ourselves - what is Resistance?

Not necessarily from a scientific standpoint but from an anthropological standpoint. When one considers the overuse of antibiotics in farming and fishing for example, it comes down to money. When one considers individuals’ relationships to these drugs in terms of overuse, it comes down to the repercussions of being ill; we all have responsibilities, people who rely on us to be healthy and the sheer logic of not suffering through a minor infection when we don’t have to. To dive deep: the overuse of antibiotics, whether for financial reasons or health reasons, is about survival.

But what of the other side of Resistance? Bacteria are under threat and adapting in order to manoeuvre around our cures. The natural world is resisting our overuse. Why? Survival.

So there it is. At its core, all of this is about humanity’s impact on the natural world. And where have we heard that before?

In our telling of the story of Alexander Fleming’s discovery, we present a scenario in which humanity (represented by Fleming himself) is directly answerable to the natural world (represented by the character of Rose).

What inevitably comes from that is the vital importance of Balance and respect for a varied and intricately evolved eco-system that cannot withstand the inexorable dominance of anyone species. As the emerging ‘mass media’ laud and honour Fleming as a ‘hero’, he faces a fight to hold onto who he is while insisting that though the world has been changed by his discovery, that does not mean it has been saved.

Sam is an actor, musician and composer from London, who studied Music at the University of Manchester and Musical Theatre at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where he was the recipient of a Leverhulme Arts Scholarship. This is his second time at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, after directing a sell-out run of Sondheim’s Assassins with Finishing the Hat Productions in 2017. Other recent credits include UK tours of Fantastic Fred and The Wind in the Willows with Hobgoblin Theatre Company, Fredrik Egerman in A Little Night Music, Otto in Spring Awakening and Loyal in Tartuffe at the RWCMD. Sam would like to thank Charades Theatre for bringing him back to Edinburgh and letting him be a part of this fantastic production.

Sarah Haddath trained at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She is thrilled to be back in theatreland with the Mould team after a break!

James Ross has been part of the Charades creative team as a songwriter and dramaturg since the inception of “The Mould”. He has over twenty years experience as a composer and performer across a variety of genres. Highlights include supporting Celtic music greats, Donnie Munro and Wolfstone. James is also a Trustee for Charades Theatre.

Graham Richardson is an actor, singer and science communicator from Belfast who has worked in Scotland for over a decade.

During the last four years he worked at the Edinburgh Science Festival creating workshops, science shows and exhibitions, inspiring an interest in science through the arts. He is also one half of the podcast Seagazing which focuses on stories about conservation and community around the coast in Scotland. A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland his performing credits include Bobby in Urinetown (RCS), Clowes in The Mould that Changed the World (Charades Theatre), Carl in The Magic Barrel Organ (Newsroom Theatre Company) and Host in RSNO presents Happy End (Peter Weigold). This time he joins Charades as a performer and science engagement manager.

Callum Donald is an acrobat and dancer originally from Scotland. He attended INAC circus school during 2019-2022, where he specialised in acrodance and Chinese pole. He joins the cast as one half of the silly bacilli Gram Twins.

Beverley Grant is a dance and circus artist, she trained at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Since graduating she has performed nationally and internationally with multiple dance, opera and aerial companies. In 2015 Beverley was awarded a BBC Performing Arts Fellowship in collaboration with Dance Base. She has subsequently held funded residency weeks at IACC and Assembly Roxy, BIRCA (Denmark) for making her own work. She is currently assistant director for All or Nothing Aerial Dance through an FST funded placement.

Beverley is looking forward to infecting hearts with her gram twin Callum.

CREATIVE TEAM BIOGRAPHIES Robin Hiley was a founding partner of Charades Theatre Company upon the company's inception in 2010. In 2017 he took the company forward as Artistic Director & CEO, overseeing its transition to a Scottish Incorporated Charitable Organisation and establishing partnerships and collaborations with major national and international organisations. As a composer, and lyricist Robin is passionate about writing and creating musical theatre that tackles pertinent social issues and also gives opportunities for the community to get involved in performing.

Developing The Mould that Changed the World has been a signifcant focus for Robin over the past 4 years, immensely enjoying collaborating with writing partners Thomas Henderson (book writer), his long-time friend and songwriting partner James Ross, and Dr Meghan Perry (scientific advisor).

Robin holds an undergraduate degree in music from Newcastle University and a MSc in enthnomusicology from the University of Edinburgh.

Thomas Henderson works predominantly as a Stage Director of opera, having studied Opera Directing and Italian at the Accademia Europea in Florence.

As an assistant director, he has worked with Nevill Holt Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Buxton International Festival, The National Opera Studio and The Royal College of Music where he has spent the past year leading the BMus 2 and 3 Acting course. Born and raised in Edinburgh, his connection to the city’s Fringe Festival has lasted many years - directing both operatic and musical theatre productions with Charades Theatre Company, Magnetic Opera and Edinburgh Studio Opera. Recent international work includes his semi-staged production of The Cunning Little Vixen which toured to Dortmund, Hamburg and Paris in 2021 with The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and he looks forward to taking The Mould That Changed The World to The United States this Autumn. Also a trained musician, Thomas can be found performing traditional Scottish fiddle music in his home city of Edinburgh, as well as singing as a member of Octavoce - an eight part vocal ensemble with whom he will tour to Croatia this September as guests of the Korcula Baroque Festival.

Sheila Grant is a movement director, performing artist and founder of Fluent Dance.

Neil Metcalfe read music at the University of Edinburgh (where he was Organ Scholar at Greyfriars Kirk), subsequently training as a repetiteur/ vocal coach/conductor in the Opera School of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and more recently at Berklee College of Music (composition and arrangement for film and television).

After a time on the music staff of Scottish Opera, he worked as a freelance repetiteur in Australia, the USA and Germany. He currently works

as a musical director, conductor, vocal coach, pianist, composer/arranger and session musician. Upcoming projects inlude a release of a recording of some of his orchestral music by Northern Film Orchestra. He has been dleighted to collaborate with composer Robin Hiley on The Mould That Changed The World, as co-orchestrator.

Jessica Conway has worked in Arts Management with many of the top arts organisations across Scotland. She currently works as Producer for Charades Theatre Company, Recordings Manager for Delphian Records and Concerts Manager for Music at Paxton. She has also worked as Ensemble Manager for Dunedin Consort and Marketing Campaigns Manager for Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Jessica also performs as a concert and opera soloist across the UK and beyond, having recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music under Hilary Summers with a Masters with Distinction.

She has appeared as a soloist with groups including Dunedin Consort, Leeds Philharmonic and Eboracum Baroque. Opera roles include Dido in Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas (Eboracum Baroque), Despina & Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Opera dei Lumi), Countess & Marcellina in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro (Edinburgh Studio Opera). Upcoming performances include performances at the Korkyra Baroque Festival and Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte (Snapshot Opera).

Molly MacDonell Finlayson is a maker and designer of costume, clothes and textiles. She makes costume at Scottish Opera and is currently developing her own brand, MacFin (Instagram: @macfin_wear). Other design work includes costume for Miss Lindsay's Secret (Fringe 2022, Venue 30) , Moonbeam on a Cat's Ear (Jabuti Theatre), Maria Stuarda and La Boheme (Magnetic Opera).

Working throughout Scotland, lighting for many community and Youth Theatre, Matthew is becoming one of Scotlands most sought after lighting designers. BIOGRAPHIES OF THE ENSEMBLE OF SCIENTISTS AND HELTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Brian K Hammer is a professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Biological Sciences and a member of the Center for Microbial Dynamics and Infection. His research lab studies the bacterium that causes pandemics of waterborne cholera disease.

He also teaches several Microbiology courses and others including the Biology of Sex & Death. He believes that now, more than ever, discoveries about the microbes all around must be coupled with effective communication of the science, and this musical is great way to do just that.

Ian Hamilton serves as Senior Advancement Officer at the CDC Foundation supporting the infectious disease and emergency response programs. He's excited to draw on his passion for theater and the arts to amplify the show's critical public health message around AMR and share Sir Alexander Fleming's story to the Atlanta community.

Stefanie McBride completed her doctoral studies researching the biosynthesis of natural products with antimicrobial properties and now works in public health policy, supporting programs to combat the threat of antimicrobial resistance in the United States and around the world. Stefanie is excited to combine her professional passions with her love of musical theater in this amazing production!

Marta Zlotnick is a veterinarian currently serving as an ORISE Fellow in foodborne disease prevention at the CDC. She last performed as part of a chorus in "The Pirates of Penzance" ca. 1989.

Rebecca Murphy-Hoefer's first love was theater even earning her first degree in musical theater/ theater studies, her career followed a different path into public health after profound experiences while working for the American Cancer Society and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Now in her 16th year with the CDC, the lead evaluator of the CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers® campaign, works with many others to prevent and reduce the most preventable cause of premature death and disease, tobacco use. Antibiotics are key to treating people who smoked and now suffer from life-threatening and chronic diseases.

Daniel Schachter is a neurologist at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He enjoys going to the cinema with his wife, watching ice hockey with his dog, and singing scales with his 2 year-old son.

Alexandra Medley is a veterinary epidemiologist. She works at the CDC in the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases, where there is a significant focus on AMR. Prior to obtaining her DVM and MPH from The Ohio State University, she was pursuing a career in opera. “Mould” is an amazing opportunity to combine her two passions and contribute to promoting awareness of AMR. Blake Tyler McGee is director of the PhD program and an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at Georgia State University, and a faculty affiliate of the Georgia Health Policy Center. He was last seen on stage 22 years ago as Larry in Burn This at nomadictheatre in Washington, DC. Dante Bugli is an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focusing on disease surveillance in humanitarian settings abroad. After participating in theater growing up, Dante is ecstatic to get a chance to return to the stage and really grateful to the whole team who made this show happen.

Lisa Guerrero is a Microbiologist currently working in Global HIV drug resistance surveillance. In addition to HIV research, she previously spent 10 years researching Ebola and other hemorrhagic fever-causing viruses. She received her BS in Cell and Molecular Biology at Texas Tech and a Masters in Public health from Tulane School of Public Health and tropical Medicine. She is grateful to the cast and crew for being able to have this wonderful opportunity.

Tess Palmer is an epidemiologist and GIS specialist with the Geospatial Research Analysis and Services Program (GRASP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focusing on public health emergency preparedness, response and recovery. Tess has loved everything that has come along with being in this show and is ecstatic about the opportunity to share her love of singing and science with this like-minded group!

Jenny Truong is a Scientist who designs, develops, and optimizes training materials on laboratory tests for public health labs in the Laboratory Response Network. Her work contributes to public health testing capacity and workforce development. For her, science and music go hand in hand; music is a creative outlet that inspires her to achieve goals in her career, so being able to combine both by performing in this musical is a dream.

Nicolette Bestul is an epidemiologist and works with Rickettsial diseases in her normal day-to-day life. You may have seen her most recently on stage in Wausau Community Theatre's 2014 productions of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Cassandra) and Shrek (Blind Mouse/Dragon). Nicolette would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her on this return to the stage!

Robert Leon Parr is a firefighter and paramedic with Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services right here outside of Atlanta. Before becoming a firefighter, Robert earned his Bachelor’s of Music from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and a Master’s of Music from McGill University in Montréal. He is happy to be dusting off his music skills and putting them to good use!

Charlene Siza is a veterinarian and public health epidemiologist, currently working on the problem of antimicrobial resistance throughout the world. Charlene has also always loved music, incorporating singing and musical instruments into her daily life. Aside from church choirs, plays and high school orchestra, this is her first venture on the public stage and she is so excited that she gets to help spread the message of the dangers of antibiotic overuse while doing something she loves.

Michelle Rogers is a Director of Clinical Pharmacy for IPD Analytics, a company that helps organizations predict, track, and analyze catalysts impacting the pharmaceutical landscape. Michelle has had a passion for musical theater and choral singing from an early age and has performed in a variety of choruses in college, church, and in her community.

Rebecca Casey studied medicine at King’s College, London and was a Surgeon for the UK National Health Service before making her move to global public health at the World Health Organization. She now works in CDC’s Global Immunization Division supporting countries around the world to introduce new vaccines and strengthen their immunization programs. Rebecca’s previous singing and dancing stage appearances include The Jungle Book and Carmina Burana (Birmingham, England).

Cindy Weinbaum is an emergency medicine and preventive medicine physician with 26 years of experience at CDC. When not working on US vaccination policy, she sings with Atlanta's Collegium Vocale, and is delighted to be allowed to combine her public health and vocal performance repertories in the Mold chorus!

Ashley Sabol is a microbiologist working in the National Center of Emerging Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. She has performed as a soloists throughout GA and on a major Christian network broadcasting worldwide. Her passion has always been to bring joy in singing to all. She is excited to be a part of this production, which brings music and science in one!

Angela Campbell is a pediatric infectious disease doctor who studies respiratory viruses at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cares for patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and loves to sing. Angie sang in various groups through college, medical school, and more recently at church, but the last musical she was in dates way back to high school when she was Rose in Anything Goes!

She is so excited for the opportunity to be part of this unique and amazing show.

Daniel Wenger by day, is an IT project manager who has worked on public health informatics appliations as a CDC contractor for over 15 years. By night, he is a wedding singer, cantor, and chauffer of his three daughters to their school play rehearsals. Past roles include The Fantasticks (Hucklebee), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Judah), Annie Get Your Gun (Tommy), and Fiddler on the Roof (Mendel).

Nanda Issa is a medical officer at CDC where she works on myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and post-COVID conditions. She started at CDC six years ago as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer. She has participated in an award-winning barbershop chorus in Atlanta as an adult, and performed Bangladeshi folk dances as a child.

Alison Mansfield is a medical doctor from the UK who is currently working in genetics research as a Visiting Fellow at Emory University. She is thrilled to be combining her love for science and music in this project!

Kelley Lubitz is a marketing professional for a biotechnology startup on the brink of solving the pathogen resistance crisis. She has also worked with the CDC Foundation to help find creative ways to raise awareness of issues surrounding public health. As a lifelong performer in music and theatre, she is thrilled to be part of this amazing cast! Enjoy the show and remember to wash your hands!

Elissa Meites became a doctor after failing a theater class in college. Now a US Public Health Service commissioned officer stationed at CDC, she also sings with the “Surgeon General’s Own” Music Ensemble.

Amanda Jones is an Informatics Epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She is delighted at the opportunity to share critical public health information through dance and song and work with an amazing group of talented, dedicated individuals.
