Editorial Desk Dear Readers, MSR Foundation has been on the growth path in the last three years 2015-18, expanding the group institutions, as can be seen from the cover page. RIBS, RILS and RIFS were added to RIMS to cater to the three year undergraduate programs like BBA, BCA, B Com, and integrated degree plus law courses respectively, while the big brother RIMS headed towards Decennial Celebrations in September 2017. Besides adding on the infrastructure needed by all the three group institutions, the management was focusing on recruitment of highly quali ed and experienced faculty members in all the areas in order to meet the growing challenges and achieve the goals.

It is evident from the pages to follow that a host of activities, tasks and events have been taking place in all the three institutions. Admissions and Placements, which are the key areas of a reputed B-School or College have witnessed remarkable achievements in recent years. Important events like Induction cum Orientation, Independence Day, Teachers Day, National Integration Day, Karnataka Rajyotsava Day, International Women’s Day, Decennial Celebrations, Annual Convocations and Onam Festival were on the top of our agenda during the academic year 2017-18. Seminars, Guest Lectures, Visits to Industry, Philanthropic acts by Rotaract Club continue to dominate the campus scene adding avor to the otherwise serious academic scene.

International Trips exposed our students to the global economies and business environment besides of course, tourism, culture, civilization, etc. Management has been taking care of the faculty and staff by celebrating birthdays, declaring Employees of Month and introducing the new joinees during the monthend lunches. Organ Donation Awareness, Blood Donation Camps, CSR Activities through Curriculum, Sports and Cultural weeks, Inter-collegiate activities, NSS, etc besides pursuing to learn Japanese / German languages, Business Analysis, Digital Marketing, Advanced Excel, Aptitude and Softskills, as also Yoga, Dance, Self-defence, Book Reviews help the students to be nurtured as well-rounded managers or professionals before leaving the campus.

An attempt has been made to capture all the events and achievements in the three institutions during the year 2017-18 and bring out this renewed issue of “PRATIDHVANI” to present to you.

Admission Report The Admission selection process for MSRF group of Institutions viz. RIMS, RIBS & RILS were done through online and Campus walk-ins. We accept MAT, GMAT, CMAT, ATMA, CAT & XAT Scores for the process to admit students from pan India in various UG and PG and also Law Courses.

The Online Marketing through Facebook was carried out exclusively targeted the young generations. We engaged an online platform for admission such as shiksha.com. The queries and online chats were regularly handled. In our website we have given the option to download the application form to cater to the aspirants.

Under RIMS the autonomous PGPM certi cation is an industry-oriented program that improves the employability quotient of the students. Exposure to cutting edge technology, catering to current market demands, business –analysis skills give the students a competitive edge over others. To maintain the standard of incoming students we have 3 rounds in the Selection process, 1. Essay writing or Written Ability Test (WAT), followed by 2. Presentation Round (PR) and 3. Personal Interviews (PIs).

Offer letters were sent to the deserving candidates once they complete the 3 rounds of admission process. The candidates are given one week time to block their seat with prescribed amount as speci ed 1

Placement Report 2017-18 It is with great pride that Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies / Sciences part of M S Ramaiah Foundation announces the successful completion of Phase-1 Final Placement process MBA Batch 2016 – 2018.

Through the years, recruiters from the world’s leading organizations have consistently reposed immense con dence in the exceptional capabilities of students that pass through these red brick walls.

This was again evinced in the recent nal placement process of Phase-1 which saw 74 companies offering coveted roles across multiple domains.

The recruiters were across the sectors such as BFSI, Consulting, FMCG, FMCD, Information Technology, Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Retail, Logistics, Services and Investment Banking.

In addition to the regular recruiters who continued to show immense faith in our students, the campus also saw 34 rst time recruiters, reiterating the ever increasing con dence that the industry places upon RIMS. There was a substantial increase in the number of offers made by the regular recruiters.

The Independence Day saw a huge assembly of students of all the three bodies of the MSR Foundation – RIMS, RILS and RIBS to celebrate the day with the customary ag hoisting following a smart march past by students and the dignitaries.

The Dean Prof. Arun Chandra Mudhol , the Principal , Dr M Swapna, Dr. Rejimon Thomas and the Coordinator Dr N Manjunatha spoke on the occasion.

While the oath taking ceremony took pride of place , with the Principal administering the oath , patriotic songs by students added signi cance to the day with a nale of snacks and sweets. 350 attendees (staff and students) across all streams

Two Industry Visits Organised on August 22, 2017 to visit two companies viz., Coca Cola and Mysore Sandal Soap 60 members including three faculty members (Prof Raj Bhaskar, Prof Rajalakshmi and Prof Chandini) visited Coca Cola factory in Bidadi (Mysore Road) in the fore noon Students witnessed the production process from raw material to nished products; also about cleanliness in the oor; it was a guided tour explaining each stage of the process; and a great learning besides enjoying in the bus as also observing group discipline during the visit.

After lunch, the group moved for second visit to Mysore Sandal Soap Factory, (Yeshwanthapur). A very senior and experienced Company Executive guided the group in plant.

Entire process of manufacturing of soaps was explained in detail. They were also shown the garden to see the trees in their backyard. Overall, it was a memorable experience to students 4

5th Sept: Teachers Day Celebrations at RIMS, RIBS and RILS The students of RIMS, RIBS and RILS got together to celebrate Teachers’ Day 2017. The day was punctuated with fun and laughter as the students had organised several activities like the Musical Chairs, Lemon and Spoon Race , Talent rounds and the Antakshari in which teachers contested to win prizes. The most heart warming part of the day was the students offering tokens of love to their faculty in the form of Rose saplings, and a school lunch kit and a book set.

Onam Celebration – 9 Sept 2017 ONAM

One of the biggest presentation event which is organized by the RIMS for the PGPM students every year to promote students to participate in the event and also to develop their presentation skills where the students can hone their skills, teams from both nal year and rst year lock horns to win the prestigious “ANVESHANA” competition where the young budding managers face each other in nail biting competition. The event was judged by the expert judges from the college as well as renowned personality from the corporate world.

RIMS, RIBS, RILS Cultural Committee The Cultural Committee organised a lavish Onam Day treat as a national day in which all students came beautifully dressed in the typical south Indian attire.

The class wise contests were Display of Floral Rangolis, Presentation of the legendary duo Lord Mahabali and Vamanavtara of Lord Vishnu and a traditional dish. The traditionally attired faculty members also decorated the Seminar Hall with a large Floral Rangoli and the visit of the Director and other dignitaries from the MSRF added to the signi cance of the day. The nale was the kaikottikali by the VI Sem. Girls and the Boat Song by the boys group.

This year a team of four young students from PGPM rst secured second prize. Initially they were really excited and with full of energy to participate in the event but there was one hurdle which they faced, was on what are going to present. In starting selected topics and rejected many but at the end able to agree on such a issue which we see every day from bus stands to a traffic signal the name of the topic was TRANSGENDERS IN INDIA. This particular issue attracted attention because it was unconventional which is considered as taboo in India but after doing research for weeks on internet, interacting with the subject we learn’t so many things about them.

National Integration Day – RIMS on November 1, 2017 Decennial Celebrations 2017 Week long celebrations of Ten Years of MSRF and RIMS closed on Sept 23, 2017 Venue was M S Ramaiah Memorial Hall, Gokula Dr G Raghuram, Director IIM Bangalore was the Chief Guest, He shared his thoughts on “New India : Vision 2022”. He dwelt on the topic of Development of Rural India, and the vision of our beloved Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He was appreciative of the bondage the students had with faculty and in particular the Director, RIMS. A Panel discussion on “Employability : Under-employment and Unemployment” was anchored by Prof Rejimon Thomas. Panelists were Mr Suresh Babu, Ms Lavanya and Mr Sharath Chandran Cultural Competitions were held; winners awarded prizes. Contemporary topics were discussed over dinner with the guests.

Students of RIMS are de ned by the spirit of oneness: the comfort with differences and kinship with all.

Karnataka Rajyotsava suffused with the colours of the nation, offered an occasion to appreciate the Indian panorama of cultural activities as part of National Integration Day on 1st November 2017. Map of India became the Rangoli inspiration; the colours and oral content drew widespread attention.

Competition between classes of all MBA programs ensured a concerted effort in presenting national diversity. Class Representatives gathered the best talent from their class for three group events – folk dance, folk song and ramp walk. Those skeptical and cynical about the engagement of our youngsters with the tradition and culture of India were reassured after witnessing the enthusiasm of our students in representing states of India in music, song and dress.

The riveting programs echoed the spirit of unity.

Best performers received blessings and prize money from the Director. Not few, but many perceptive members of the M S Ramaiah Foundation Family will see the generosity of the Founder Trustee re ected in the quantum of motivation packed in the prizemoney envelope. The least to our prize winner is greater than the most that we observe commonly in B-Schools. SBS-Business Analytics bagged rst position and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.12,500; University of Mysore (UOM) Section-E took the second place - Rs.10, 000; SBS-1 took the third prize of Rs.7500.

Kannada Rajyotsava Conducted on Nov 1, 2017 to increase awareness among students / citizens / Students / staff belonging to different regions / castes / languages / religions but are Indians!

Various activities were conducted by students with the guidance of faculty members (Prof /s Prasad Linganna, Julie Sunil and Chandini) in the presence of Director / Dean / Associate Dean To demonstrate integration and diversity, students performed Folk Songs, Folk Dances and Ethnic Theme Walking representing different regions of the country. These events were judged by Faculty Members and an external expert, Mr Darshan S. Prize winners were from three rst year sections, viz., SBSBA, UoM Section E and SBS-MBA It was a wonderful experience of entertainment, learning and with take away of Unity.

Management Seminar on 2 Nov 2017 One Day Seminar on “Impact of Legislation and Technology on Business” was held. The sub-themes were Demonetisation, GST, Data Analytics and Job creation in a Digital World The following four speakers addressed the seminar: 01. Dr Giridhar. Rotaract Club activities A seventeen member Board of Directors led by Rtr Chetan U was elected for the year 2017-18 Rotr. We had a break from our routine life. The experience of travelling in a group taught us to be respectful of the place we visited and also the people whom we socialised with. How much ever we missed our homes back in India, The level of fun was increasing day by day. As we entered Singapore we started to learn and also respect each other’s different perspectives of looking at similar experiences at the same time. Getting away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom gave us an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment.

We bonded better. By helping each other we de nitely built the ar t of time and money management, which also made us feel responsible for travel. This exposure was one of a kind and this trip has thought us things that we will not forget. And we realised that there is always a way to learn something new every day.

Educational tour to Malaysia – Singapore November 29th to December 4th Happiness is way of Travel, not Destination.

We were 69 MBA students who started our journey from RIMS at 4 in the evening on the 28 th of November. As we left to the airport we were comfortable with a group of friends we were already familiar for the past 5 months. By the time we reached the airport our rst lesson, which was communication had already begun. Because of the ying procedures we started to talk among each o t h e r, a n d t h i s h e l p e d u s E n h a n c e o u r Communication.

We reached Singapore on the 29 th and started enroute Kuala Lampur , we were put in 2 coaches , one for 37 boys and our Faculty Coordinator Mr.Saravnna and the other was for the 32 girls along with faculty coordinators Mrs. Laveen and Ms. Neha.

As we reaching Malaysia we began our informal learning environment. The different place, people, language, culture and started to teach us about how important travelling Experiences actually are. We as a group started building the art of Retention. This is a type of memory that educational trips create. It is also called “Episodic Memory”. This helped us to retain information for a longer period through informal learning experience.

On one end of the debate is whether the world is indeed round; on the other side is Thomas L. Friedman’s view on how globalisation has made the world at. In this backdrop, business students of RIMS must take a round of the globe and see its at market structures; the aerial view where markets look alike and the terrestrial one that reveals disguise and the undercurrents of differences in language, currency, culture, negotiation tactics and openness to strangers. Dubai attracts tourists with its feats of accomplishing the superlatives- the tallest sky scraper, the largest shopping mall apart from the shopping festivals and cosmopolitan culture.Therefore, it rightfully became the destination for the International Study Tour organized from 13th to 19th November 2017. Sixtythree students with 3 staff members started the journey to Emirates. They visited Dubai, Abu-dabhi, and Sharjah. The unique architecture, city landscape, world-class infrastructure, tall buildings, metro rail and roads, rules and discipline became the topics of discussion and a quest on how the model-city format can be duplicated in India. Desert Safari, shopping at the mall and visit to the Grand Mosque offered multidimensional experience of a contemporary business destination.

INTERNATIONAL TRIPS First international study tour was organised by our MSRF Group of Institutions to celebrate the completion Decennial Year. A team of 63 MBA 10

students along with 3 Teaching and Non-Teaching staffs travelled to UAE from 13th November to 18th November 2017 for the duration of 5 days. We had the opportunity to soak in the Middle Eastern Food, Cultures and Life Styles.

During the Trip students have visited to Dubai Museum, Jumeirah Beach and 7 star hotel “BURJ AL ARAB JUMERIAH” which was the rst biggest and luxuries Hotel in Dubai. Next students visited to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the most excited place Burj-Khalifa, which is the tallest and biggest manmade building in the world.

The students experienced the art of “Episodic Memory” through informal learning experience.

On our Second International Educational trip, we had the privilege to visit Singapore and Malaysia from 29th November to 4th December to enforce informal learning experience through different People, Language and Culture. A team of 69 MBA students along with 3 Teaching and Non-Teaching staffs.

During the trip our students visited Twin Tower, Chocolate Factory, Batu Caves where we received the blessings of lord Murugan, which is eventually one among the Gods prayed by the South Indian community. Our next visit to Marina Bay, Singapore Flyer where we can view the beauty of Singapore.

Then took a Cable car Ride, Sea Aquarium Singapore, met over 100000 marine animals and over 1000 species and learn as you go! Universal Studio is a theme park, it features 24 rides, Shows which makes you to forget that your grown up and takes you to your childhood.

An accused is the person who is charged by the investigation team with available evidences on any registered crime. But none of the accused except in certain petty cases accepts his guilty. They prefer trial by pleading not guilty and burden of proof lies on prosecution to prove beyond reasonable doubts. In a criminal case it is mandate for the investigation team to take evidences in the presence of the accused at the place of occurrence and as per his directions the investigation team should recover the material objects of the registered crime. Mostly the accused will not be cooperating with investigating team. At this juncture with the leave of the court, the investigation team may proceed for Narco-Analysis.

Chapterisation of this book spreads into nine chapters and book gives exhaustive knowledge on Narco Analysis in legal perspective. Narco Analysis Test is based on the principle that a person is able to tell lie by using his/her imagination. In Narco Analysis Test, he is brought to the stage of semiconscious so that he/she loses his/her power of imagination and he answers with the facts on which he has got direct knowledge. The origin of the word Narco – it’s a Greek word “narke” and its meaning is “numbness”.

The person under investigation is injected with Sodium Pentathal or Sodium Amgtal with different dosage as per sex, age, health and physical condition. The patient can answer speci c but simple questions though not in a position to speak his/her own and cannot create a lie. Since the semiconscious person is unable to manipulate, the answers given are believed to be true.

The question on the violation of fundamental right is answered by referring to the case reported in 2007 at criminal law journal in journal section page 138 stating Article 20 (3) does not apply during the time of investigation. The author brought various case laws and examples to establish the same. Section 29 of Indian Evidence Act states the evidence obtained by compulsion is not admissible in the court of law and section 163 of Criminal Procedure code also 12

prohibits to obtain evidence through compulsion.

The book distinguishes between the compulsion to give infor mation which is obtained under compromise with different case laws. In the present era, Narco analysis is considered as modern tool of investigation like DNA pro ling. The book gives international Jurists view of Narco Analysis and correlates with Medical ethics.

No person shall be compelled in any case to be a witness against himself. Hence in India the admissibility of the result of Narco-analysis has been put to scrutiny as it is considered as weakest evidence. Before accepting the result of Narcoanalysis as evidence, the court should apply his mind to the highest degree.

The construction of the book meshes with different substantial and procedural laws. The author has taken effort to put relevant citations in each area including fundamental rights and self-incrimination.

Major portion of the book is discussing much about the law in regard to grant or refusal of bail which is not much justi able to the title of the book. Article 20(3) is discussed many times in different chapters as well as there are number of repetitions in the book.

The book ‘Clear and Simple as the Truth’ by Francis Noel Thomas and Mark Turner makes convincing argument on the aws of adopting grammar and style as sufficient inputs for garnering con dence in communication.

The book introduces other styles of writing and compares these with classic style to draw out distinctions. In that, the comparison is made with Plain Style which, if adopted, is likely to distort and dilute truth. The Re exive Style, Practical Style, Contemplative Style, Romantic Style, Prophetic and Oratorical Style undergo similar treatment of their existence and application. The moment of clarity is unmistakable when the styles are compared and contrasted with the Classic Style; this approach leaves no room for doubt on the characteristics of classic style.

Part two of the book is a Museum where the authors delve into examples and commentary using plethora of excellent writing from Thomas Jefferson to Mark Twain. The analyses of writing styles aid application of rules that quali es a piece of work as classic prose.

The book is complete in its promise to the reader by introducing the nal part ‘The Studio’ with the objective of ensuring active mastery of the style with concerted practice. The aspiring classic writers can engage in the exercises given in the studio apart from adopting the list of suggested reading for appreciation of the classic style even as they hone their own.

The YMCA public speaking competition held on 27 th February, 2018 came as an opportunity for the students of Ramaiah Institute of Legal Studies. It was a public speaking competition with the topic being “Does youth need reservation in parliament” .The students who were participating in the event had to deliver a speech of 4 minutes either for or against the topic. Ms. Nupur Mehrotra, Ms. Divya Anand, Mr. Saivenkatdarshan were the 3 students chosen from our college. There were several other colleges who were competing in the same.

Listenig to the other speakers and their way of expressing their thoughts were quite impressive and made the students learn a lot. The timings of the events was from 11am in the morning to 5pm in the evening. Everyone was given a participation certi cate.

Three boys and 3 girls were given the best speaker award which included a cash prize of 2000 and a certi cate of excellence. Saivenkat Darshan of our own college emerged as the victor and bought laurels to our college .There were many challenges faced by our students the toughest being speaking in front of a large and well learned audience and judges .

Such experiences gives students lot of encouragement and lot of knowledge and teach them to face the world outside their college. These opportunities should be given to the students to enhance their personalities

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 8th March is internationally celebrated as the “International Women’s Day”. It is an important occasion for all us to pause for a moment to re ect on ourselves, to appreciate how much has been done and what more needs to be done in the eld of gender equality. Moreover, it is the day to acknowledge all the men and women in the world for making this world a better place for everyone to live in.

On this day ,all the students of RILS assembled in the basement of the campus with placards and hoardings ,there was a rally being conducted by them .The cause of the rally was to bring peace among people and to have a silent walk on the occasion to bring out the rights for women. Gender equality was highlighted under the theme BE BOLD AND BRAVE. The celebrations came to an end with cultural activities and a play by the drama club in the college seminar hall.

Everyone was excited about the events. ArchitaKashyap came 1 st followed by Sukanya Mukherjee as 1 st runner up and Surya as 2 nd runner up. 8 th March 2018 was the 2 nd day of our sports event. The most awaited one “FOOTBALL.” Everyone was excited a lot for the match. The match took place in Match Day Ground. There were 16 teams participating which consisted of 15 teams from RIMS and one team from RILS. The match begins with cheering for the teams. We won the 1 st match by 3-0 and the second match by 1-0. We got into semi nals and won the match. We got into the nals defeating 14 teams of RIMS and later lost the nal match by 5-2. The 3 rd day and the nal day of our sports event consisted of Throw ball and Volleyball. It was on 9 th of March 2018. The matches took place in RIBS Ground. There were 12 teams consisted of 11 RIMS teams and one RILS team in Throwball.

The girls were ready for the match and were quite con dent. They won the rst match by 7-3 and entered quarter nals. Winning the quarter nal they stepped into semi nal and were into the nals. We were the 1 st runner up. There were 16 teams consisted of 15 teams from RIMS and one team from RILS. Everyone cheered their teams and the match started with full energy and the teams were ready for the match. The team was nervous but the boys were focused and they set their goals.

SPORTS EVENT - RILS Excited about the sports events, all the enthusiastic fresh faces reached the HMT ground around 8am. Day one of the sports event started with Cricket. Everyone was excited for the matches to begin. The participants and the teams were excited and nervous about the events to begin. Hoping to their best the day begin with cricket. Our rst match was against RIMS.

They won the rst match by 11-8 and also won the 2 nd match by 11-9. They later got eliminated in the next match by 11-9. They gave the team a tough competition. The sports events were an amazing experience for our students to learn about team effort and to work as a team .The students especially thanked our principal for giving them this opportunity

Unfortunately it was not our day and we lost against RIMS. We all were dishearten but the boys gave their best and we were proud of them. As said by Vince Lombardi “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” The next event which took place were badminton. All the girls were nervous but they pull up their socks and were ready to give their best. There were around 18 participants and they were divided 18

BOOK REVIEW OF ‘PUBLIC SECRECTS OF LAW’ - RAPE TRIALS IN INDIA AUTHOR : PRATHIEEKSHA BAXI

The book is possibly one of the most damning indictments of the Indian legal system in recent times. Popular media has helped shape the story of an India on the verge of frightened society but always saved by an activist and visionary Supreme Court; but the truth is that despite a milestone judgments, the judiciary is possibly among the institutions that have betrayed their remit the most. Although the author Pratiksha Baxi deals only with rape, with Gujarat as her sample state, the policing and judicial procedures described here could be everyman’s trial for crime anywhere in India.

As Baxi says, quoting Nordstrom,’’ that which is formally illegitimate is sufficiently legitimated in practice’’. Baxi presents ethnographic accounts of real trials to systematically reveal the series of illegalities that they hide.

Firstly, official transcripts of a trial are not verbatim accounts but contain what is dictated by the presiding judge. Thus, the violence of what is actually spoken and practiced in the court room is sanitized from the official room. This also explains how and why precedents of injustice are allowed in live on.

Secondly police on duty paraphrases FIR’s or dictates what must be written in them, thus in the guise of using correct legal language and form, complaints are often diluted or falsi ed.

The conventions of “court room talk” insist the victims (even child victims) – use prescribed narratives to make their testimony “valid’ regardless of what their experience trauma is. To the court author says ‘wrong’ seems to weight in only when it can be proved or disproved in language of evidentiary value. In the process, we nd legal systems that are more faithful to linguistics than to justices.

Compromise exist because our courts do not uphold the written law, but they uphold the unwritten social norms. The police and the judiciary are complicit in dispensing social justice than legal justice- and women’s lived experience of violence always looses out against the politics of mail honor.

Baxi’s book is a hard-hitting expose of how the various projects of law reform have had limited onground impact. Of how Supreme Court guidelines on the conduct of rape trials are routinely outed. Of how court room culture reinforces phallocentric power politics rather than individual rights to life and justice. Of India’s easy socio-legal tolerance of sexual violence.

As the world moves increasingly towards therapeutic jurisprudence- de ned as an approach to law that does not re-victimize the victim (whether of road accidents, theft or violence) - Baxi’s book shows how very little Indian courts are touched by judicial humanitarianism or sensitivity. Surely this is a major failure of the legal education system. Everyone talks of sensitising the police force but nobody is taking of sensitizing our lawyers and future judges. Baxi’s book ought to be on every law student’s mandatory reading list.
