CHOWAN UNIVERSITY

Philanthropic Report 2 02 2-2 023

M E S S AGE F ROM Dear Chowan Family, Statistics show that college grads are healthier, wealthier, happier, and live longer than people without college degrees. But truthfully, a major contributor to those benefits is a person’s success in the workplace. Here is the big news! While most leaders in higher education are either oblivious to the confidence gap or are content to simply “admire the problem,” Chowan University is now one of a handful of universities in the United States dedicated to providing a solid academic education and equipping our students with the life skills they need to successfully navigate life in the 21st century. Chowan is becoming a Life Skills University. So, what are life skills? If you Google “life skills,” you will find a number of definitions and examples, but they all come down to this: “Life skills are acquired abilities that everyone needs to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of a changing world.” They include specific skills like communicating effectively, thinking critically, networking, and teamwork, to name a few. You might ask how Chowan intends to help students acquire these life skills. Here are the five pillars upon which our Life Skills University is being built: We will emphasize career-focused majors enhanced with internship, job shadowing, and mentoring opportunities. Life Skills learning activities inside and outside the classroom. An innovative active learning model in which students will take two courses in the first seven weeks of the semester, followed by two more courses. This will provide for more concentrated, active classroom learning. Faith Anchored is the University’s continuing commitment to maintaining a learning community where the foundational values of Jesus Christ are taught to and modeled for our students.

T H E PR E S I DE N T And the last is our commitment to work with students and their families to make a Chowan life skills education affordable. As we move forward, the University is going to need your help. Here’s how: First - We need you to help us spread the word far and wide. Encourage everyone to visit our website chowan.edu/lifeskills to learn more. Second – a large part of this new educational approach involves connecting our students with the world of work. If you can assist us in securing internships, job shadowing opportunities, and mentorships, we would like to hear from you. Third - A big change like this is going to require more resources and we hope you will think about how you can help financially. There may be some of you who catch the vision and want to invest in the future of our students in a big way. We would love to talk with you about how that can happen. Others of you may be able to support this new effort in more modest ways. Soon, we will be sharing ways that every one of you can help put our students on track toward a bright future. You can use the email address President@chowan.edu to communicate with us. Finally, Chowan has always been anchored in the Christian faith. We will continue to teach and model the values Christ taught. After all, they are essential life skills. We will not depart from that important part of our mission. In summary, we hope you become as excited as we are about this new direction and find ways to help us build a great Life Skills University. Gratefully,

Charles E. Taylor, Jr.

A BRAND NEW VISION:

Preparing Students for the FUTURE of work Y

es, the world around us is always changing–including what employers expect from today's college graduates. Excellence in a field of study is still essential, but it's the integration of future-proof skills that will set our graduates apart for career success. Recent college graduates, parents, and employers are increasingly dissatisfied with how colleges are preparing students for the workplace.

That's why Chowan is pivoting to a whole new approach to the academic experience.

“Chowan University played a significant role in preparing me for the design world. Through their program, I gained valuable insights into the importance of building a strong portfolio and understanding clients’ needs. The university also provided practical experiences, such as mock interviews, design-client interactions, and public critiques, which helped me develop real-world skills and confidence. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my abilities as a designer and building my professional acumen. NAYSON TIANGA '20

Students B

eginning in the fall of 2024, Chowan will implement a new innovative learning model that is designed to maximize learning—and the use of our student's time. In this new approach to scheduling, the traditional fall and spring semesters are divided into two sessions. By focusing on just two classes each session, students can dig deep into the content and take time for practical application.

HOW IT WORKS • • • • • • •

The school year is divided into four seven-week sessions. Students will take two classes each session, completing eight classes each year. Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Students will choose from classes that meet two days each week or four days every week. Coursework incorporates real-world problem solving for learning outside of class. Wednesdays are free for extracurricular activities, experiential learning, and studying. We’ll guide students to stay on track and graduate in four years.

“Working in Chicago addressing social issues and switching careers to teach started with the passion I found at Chowan. Chowan prepared me for my career by providing me with opportunities to be a servant leader in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Being involved in various capacities of the university shaped my heart, perspective, and work ethic and challenged me in ways that contribute to my success today. It takes a certain place to shape the mind intellectually, develop good character, and ignite passion. Chowan was that for me." GERLISA SHIPMAN '15

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE

The Chowan Chapel In 2020, amid the unknown of a pandemic, Chowan University and its supporters launched a campaign for the university’s first free-standing chapel. From the words in Jeremiah 29:11, the family of Bucky ‘74 and Jan Glover made a lead gift to launch the fundraising efforts for a new chapel at Chowan University. Chowan was founded as a Baptist institution and has served students since 1848 without a dedicated building for worship. In 2023, as the university celebrates its 175th year, this will soon change thanks to the Glovers’ involvement and the Board of Trustees’ commitment to construct the 5,000 sq. ft chapel in the heart of campus. The university held a groundbreaking ceremony in 2021. Despite delays related to the pandemic, access to materials, and inflation, it completed construction ahead of the 175th Founder’s Day on October 11, 2023. In late January, excitement built on campus as six concrete trucks arrived and laid the foundation for the chapel. Since then, the progress has been swift. In April 2023, as the contractors were finalizing the first third of the chapel’s framing, the Glovers prayerfully named the chapel what they feel is fitting and welcoming to all. Following a vote by the Board of Trustees, all were excited to share that the name of the first freestanding chapel in the university’s history to be “Chowan Chapel.”

THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

8

In a poignant ceremony that echoed with faith, unity, and gratitude, Chowan University celebrated the inauguration of the Chowan Chapel on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. This momentous event, known as the “Chowan Chapel: Service of Thanksgiving,” marked a significant milestone in the institution’s history. The Chowan Chapel, situated within the serene confines of Chowan University’s campus, is far more than a brick-and-mortar structure; it symbolizes a sacred space where a community of believers, united by a shared purpose, can congregate. With its doors now open to all, the Chowan Chapel embarks on a noble mission to serve as a cornerstone in the realms of worship, edification, and evangelism. In alignment with Christ’s message of love and service, the Chowan Chapel aspires to make a meaningful impact in the world while spreading the message of Christ’s love. It serves as the centerpiece of the university’s faith-based education, reinforcing the institution’s unwavering commitment to being a Christcentered institution of higher learning.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY COMMEMORATES THE OPENING OF

The Chowan Chapel With the Chowan Chapel now open and serving as a spiritual and communal hub for all, it stands as a testament to Chowan University’s dedication to nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of its students and the broader community. When it came to designing the Chowan Chapel, the university sought to create a structure that seamlessly blended with the existing architectural landscape while paying homage to the local and regional church buildings. Toni Finch, Principal of Little BIRD Architecture, PLLC, was entrusted with this formidable task. Finch’s vision was clear: to design a chapel that would not only stand as a symbol of faith but also evoke a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the region’s historic church buildings. She carefully studied the local architectural vernacular, considering the shapes, materials, and aesthetics that define the area’s beloved churches. The result is a chapel that exudes charm and timelessness. With its graceful lines, a soaring steeple, and a warm color palette, the Chowan Chapel harmoniously fits within the campus’s architectural context while carrying the spirit of traditional North Carolinian churches.

THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

Turning architectural blueprints into a tangible structure requires the skill and dedication of seasoned professionals. Monteith Construction, headquartered in Wilmington, NC, proved to be the perfect choice to bring Finch’s design to life. As the general contractor for the Chowan Chapel, Monteith Construction displayed exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for the project’s significance. They skillfully executed the construction, ensuring that every element of the chapel was meticulously crafted to reflect the architect’s vision and the university’s values. The result is not merely a building but a spiritual sanctuary that captures the essence of tradition and faith. The Chowan Chapel is more than just a building; it is a place where students can think, engage, and trust. Its design and construction represent a harmonious blend of history and modernity, tradition and innovation.

10

As students, faculty, alumni, and visitors enter the Chowan Chapel’s doors, they are greeted by an atmosphere of serenity and reflection. The soaring steeple serves as a beacon, guiding all towards a space where worship, edification, and evangelism are central. The completion of the Chowan Chapel at Chowan University marks a significant milestone in the 175 years of the institution’s history. As it stands proudly on the campus, the Chowan Chapel beckons all to come together, to worship, and to reflect. It is a living testament to the university’s values, and it will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and intellectual growth of students for generations to come.

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

n Febraury 2021, the Ann Baird Caulkins Second

Pew Scholarship was established by retired Murfreesboro Baptist Church pastor, the Rev. Tom Caulkins to honor his wife’s legacy as a faithful, selfless cornerstone of the community.

Partners in Love and Life by Kim Sherman Bailey

Rev. Tom Caulkins and Ann Baird Caulkins have been partners in love and life since June 8, 1949. Although Ann dropped out of Westhampton College, a division of the University of Richmond, to get married and support Tom while he completed a Master’s of Social Work from Richmond Professional Institute, a division of William and Mary, and then a Bachelor of Divinity from Crozer Theological Seminary, she never lost her passion for learning and maintained an unquenchable desire to complete her degree while raising two daughters, Charlene and Bonnie. Nineteen years later, she graduated from the then Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) with a BS in Sociology while being a full-time mother and pastor’s wife. Although there was self-gratification in achieving THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

14

her academic goals, Ann’s primary fulfillment came from knowing that she could better serve her family with a completed degree. “So much of my work history I did to educate Tom and then Charlene and Bonnie,” shared Ann. “It was a joy to know that my work was being beneficial to my family’s education. I think education is so important. Anybody should get as much education as they can.” Tom Caulkins served as the pastor of four churches, including Murfreesboro Baptist Church from 1968-1993. In the early 1960’s he served as a Chowan Trustee, and in the 1970’s he taught as an adjunct professor in the Religion Department. The stories of Tom’s devotion to Christ and His people can be heard throughout congregations in Northeastern North Carolina and Southeastern Virginia,

PA R TN E R S I N LOV E A N D LI F E including the eleven churches where he served as interim pastor. But when the Lord called Tom Caulkins to ministry, he called Ann as well. Through the years, Ann became wholly invested in serving their congregations with ceaseless, daily kindnesses. Though Tom served God with a quiet, confident reverence, Ann appeared as a complementary foil to her husband’s demeanor as an energetic, charismatic soul who exuded positivity and radiated God’s goodness. Ann was present at every church service, sitting faithfully in the second pew so as not to miss a word of Tom’s sermon. Charlene and Bonnie vividly recall their mother’s attentiveness on Sunday mornings, her concentrated brow and affirming nods silently encouraging their pastor father. The sisters also fondly remember how her playful, assertive nature made an appearance at Sunday lunch where she would give her candid review of the morning’s sermon and not hesitate to point out any stray grammatical errors. Tom shared that Ann’s unwavering support from the second pew always made him preach better.

As involved as Ann was with the church and tending to the congregation, she seldom missed an event hosted by Chowan University. From academic lectures and conferences to plays and musical performances, the family calendar held them all. Ann saw Chowan as an extension of their ministry work at Murfreesboro Baptist. Many Sundays, Ann invited students who attended the morning service to the family’s home for dinner. Ann was always delighted to have guests in her home.

In every aspect of her life, Ann was dedicated to living out one of her most cherished Bible verses, Ephesians 4:32. Her daily mantra was especially evident in her occupation as a social worker. Ann recalls, “I always enjoyed going to work and meeting people. I worked at mental health, and I felt like I made a difference and could be a good help. So many people had such difficult problems, and I could listen and help them work through their problems. I always tried to treat everyone with kindness and include everyone.”

Tom was very much aware of the influence Ann had in the community. He remembers, “When I’d go out and see people in the grocery store or on the street, any number of people would ask me, ‘You’re Mr. Caulkins, aren’t you?’ and when I’d answer yes, they would tell me how nice and kind Ann had been to them.” Ann’s gracious demeanor and sincere concern for others brightened everyone around her. Even if she was physically absent, Ann made sure her comforting presence was felt through handwritten notes to members of the church and community who were in the hospital, shut-in, bedridden, grieving, or simply in need of encouragement. Charlene and Bonnie fondly recall their mother writing these notes of encouragement every Sunday afternoon after waking up from her brief Sunday afternoon nap. They also remember sounds of their mother in the kitchen fixing meals and baking goodies to take to various people. In every aspect of her life, Ann made it her mission to consistently serve her family, church, community, and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her admirable perseverance to complete her degree in higher education for the simple desire to learn and grow is the essence Chowan hopes to capture as it award deserving recipients of this scholarship established in Ann’s honor.

For the Love of God, the Love of Juanita and the Love of Chowan by John M. Tayloe

Charles Pond’s relationship with Chowan began when he became a student in the early 1960s. He tells the story of meeting with Dr. Bruce Whitaker, President, along with his Grandmother, Clara Pond, just like it was yesterday. That meeting held at the request of Mrs. Pond changed his life forever. Charles readily admits he was not the best student in high school. He lacked direction and Chowan provided him the opportunity to prove himself. During the summer of 1960, he was admitted on probation with the requirement of successfully completing summer school courses. He rose to the occasion, proved his ability as a student and his Chowan story began. Completing his Associate Degree in Accounting in 1962, Charles continued his education at Mars Hill College (now University) earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. A constant through the years is his recognition of the fact Chowan changed his life forever. It was and has remained the people who became THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

16

his second family. Out of his Chowan experience, began a lifetime of service to church, community and his alma mater. Charles attributes all of his success in life to the opportunity he was given by Chowan to prove his worth and value. Mr. Pond has often stated, “The least I can do is give back to Chowan. I can never repay the school for the opportunity it gave me by believing in me at a critical time in life.” Alumni relate their experience closely with the people of Chowan. Mr. Pond is no different from the more than 12,000 alumni. He recalls fondly his relationship with Dr. Bruce Whitaker that lasted as long as he lived. Likewise, his professors in the Business Department Thomas Ruffin and L.M. Wallace really helped him grow and develop beyond just the classroom. They gave him direction, ideas and suggestions that have had tremendous impact throughout his life. While a student at Chowan, Charles took advantage of opportunities to be involved. He served in the Baptist

FO R TH E LOV E O F G O D, TH E LOV E O F J UA N ITA A N D TH E LOV E O F C H OWA N Student Union and played on the basketball team. His early involvement does shed light on interests that have remained throughout life. “Faith in your future,” are more than just a string of words linked together for Charles. It was Chowan that had faith in him and for the rest of his life he has had Faith in the future of Chowan. Having served initially as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, then the Board of Visitors and for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees. His service spans a combined 46 years. A level of service any graduate would struggle to match. In 2004 the Board of Trustees recognized Charles with a resolution of appreciation for making the contacts that saved Chowan from closure during the spring of 2003. This was a critical moment in time where he exhibited the ultimate faith in Chowan’s future. Since that time, Charles and his late wife, Juanita, embarked on a journey to pave the way forward for future Chowan students. With tears in his eyes, Charles recounts their relationship that began in high school and paused for a number of years while he pursued education. As fate would have it, they would later become reacquainted

and marry. Upon reflection, Charles states, “I would have never been inspired to do what I have done for Chowan and many other organizations had it not been for Juanita.” Along with Jesus Christ, she brought a sense of purpose to his life. With a smile on his face, Charles states their Dads knew early on they were meant for each other. Their Chowan story is truly one for the ages. Charles and Juanita along with President Chris White and First Lady, Linda worked together identifying opportunities worthy of their support. First their focus was on the scholarship program, small projects such as improving the quality of the Admissions Office suite on two occasions along with other areas on campus, the challenge gift for the Campaign for Columns, their assistance with the establishment of the Chowan Christian Service Association and their commitment to the Pond Football Center Campaign. Juanita was a quick study regarding need and became one of Chowan’s strongest cheerleaders inspiring Charles to give and inspiring countless others to join them in making a difference in the lives of the students we serve. Literally thousands of students have benefited from their generosity over the years. In recognition of her life’s work in the field of education and her love of young people, Charles named Juanita Pond Hall in Whites Crossing in her honor as her health began to decline. After a lengthy illness, Juanita died during the fall of 2019. With the passing of Juanita, Charles’ story could have easily ended. But with strong faith in God, his purpose was renewed. With conviction he has continued their mission of impacting the lives of young people and providing opportunity for them to be introduced to the special place we call Chowan. Keeping her memory alive is not only passion, it is evidenced by the difference he has made in continuing their legacy of support. Charles and Juanita enjoyed all aspects of life and as a couple had many interests - the arts including music and theater, athletic programs, lectures, church, community service and the list could go on and on. This reality explains his first gifts in her memory – The Juanita Kelly Pond Music Scholarship Endowment Fund and the Juanita Kelly Pond Missions Endowment Fund. Then the Juanita Kelly Pond Gallery in Green Hall. The most significant tribute of all to Juanita and a testament to their faith, is the naming of the sanctuary in the new chapel a vision he shared with many including President Kirk E. Peterson.

FO R T H E LOV E O F G O D, T H E LOV E O F J UA N ITA A N D T H E LOV E O F C H OWA N Charles often quotes his father, C. B. Pond, Jr., who said, “you reap what you sow,” and “you get out of something what you put into it.” These words of wisdom have not only been forever stamped in his memory, they have been guiding principles. Following college Charles worked with his Dad in the family business, Nansemond Cold Storage Company, until his death in 1984. With a strong business acumen, Mr. Pond has continued developing businesses over the years including Nansemond Cold Storage and Taylor Freezers, Inc. His business instincts, entrepreneurial ability and interest in real estate have paid significant rewards over his lifetime. Upon reflection, he is overwhelmed with the success he has created and as a result, has been sowing into others continually throughout his life. We all have a beginning. For Charles, it was Suffolk, VA. It is where he and his family lived, worked, went to church, and served the community. For a number of years Charles has made the Rushmere community of Smithfield, VA his home. He is an active member of Franklin Christian Church and gives generously of his time and treasure helping those causes most important to him. A constant throughout life, regardless of where the roads have led, has been his devotion, service and stewardship of this place he affectionately calls home.

THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

18

Beyond Chowan, Charles and Juanita have been devoted supporters of the Suffolk Center for the Cultural Arts, Boy Scouts, the former Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, Mars Hill University and countless other charitable causes. Their legacy stands on its own. Charles is a member of the Board of Trustees and is Chair of the Business Affairs Committee, positions he has held for many years. In addition he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chowan Christian Service Association, a position he has held since inception of the association. For many years of faithful service to Chowan and Baptist Life, Charles was honored with the Baptist Heritage Award in 2005. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. To quote scripture from Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” Charles recognizes he will be held responsible for what he has. Benefiting others with his wealth, knowledge, time and talents is not only a choice, but is expected. Without hesitating, Charles says the most important things to him have been and remain to be his – Love of God, Love of Juanita and Love of Chowan in that order. “Without Chowan, I would not be where I am today!”

CAMPUS MINISTRY in CUBA by Lou Ann Gilliam

On May 7, the Chowan Campus Ministry Mission team went to Santiago de Cuba, Cuba for their first international mission trip since the Covid-19 pandemic. Read Minister to the University Rev. Mari Wiles’s reflection on the experience. I have a map of the World that I found in a flea market in Brooklyn, NY. It was printed the year I was born. I love the colors but I especially appreciate the reminder that in my short lifetime countries have fallen, been taken over, changed their names, divided, etc. Lines on the map are all man-made. None of us chooses where we are born or what passport we will carry. But somehow I don’t think God sees it that way. We had the opportunity to go and spend time with our Brothers and Sisters of faith in Cuba. Cuba is a gorgeous Caribbean Island just 90 miles off the shores of Florida. But the stark realities of communism rob the people of basic human needs. Currently, there is a massive food shortage

and no gasoline is being sold on the island. How would that impact your daily life? It is a deep burden for these people. We were able to take in over 550 pounds of food (rice, beans, canned chicken, peanut butter, powdered milk, spices, oatmeal, and grits) medicines, and underwear as well as some children’s sports equipment and craft supplies. We were humbled when they gathered us together to share with us their gratitude for these things. They were especially grateful for the rice, medicines, and underwear (currently this is not available to buy at all). They said we had brought some bandaging that was a specific need of one patient and had no idea that we would be able to bring it so they didn’t request it. But GOD! They thanked us for bringing underwear and one woman thanked me that we had not just brought it but that many of it was so “pretty”.

CA M PU S M I N I S TRY I N C U BA Here we have all of what we need and most of what we want and we have God. There they have little of what they need and none of what they want BUT they have God. Their faith and worship express the difference. They are as vibrate as the blue waters that surround their island in living their love for God. They worship with their whole being and do not seem to worry that the government can shut down a church at any time. They do not look at their smartwatch to see “how much longer” or worry that they will get wet when they walk home miles in the rain because the country is in a drought and the rain is an answer to prayer.

We were thankful to spend a week scraping and painting, praying and worshipping, sharing simple yet generous meals, and hearing the passion and pain of our friends. I wish the manmade restrictions would lighten for these people. But I’m thankful that their relationship with God leads them to do heroic things every day. Our host told us on our last day,” When we complain, we disappoint God.” I think our team will attempt to complain less and find ways to delight God more after our time in Cuba.

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY has Historic CHOWAN GIVES 2023 EVENT by Kim Sherman Bailey

$332,284 RAISED Chowan University’s third annual day of giving was the most successful fundraising event of its kind in Chowan history and commemorated the 175th anniversary of the institution. This year’s day of giving inspired 748 donors to give, totaling $332,284, surpassing the event’s fundraising goal of $175,000 to support various university areas. Alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and parents from 32 states and four countries participated in the online giving event during the 1,848 minutes of giving on April 5-6th. There were over 214 Chowan Champions who signed up to promote the day of giving by sharing their story and even sharing their unique giving URLs to encourage others to give. Donors had an opportunity to express their support by writing messages when they made a gift online, either in memory or in honor of someone on the giving day website donor wall. Throughout the day, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters stopped by campus to show their support not only monetarily but with their time at “giving day headquarters” located in the Felton University House and student social tent located at the historic McDowell Columns Building and various events throughout campus. Vital to the success of the day of giving were 29 matching gifts and challenges totaling $228,900. Several alumni and friends of the university participated in offering challenges that inspired additional support. Mr. Charles Pond ’62 generously had a 1:1, dollar-fordollar match for donations and a CCSA Challenge. Chairman of the Board Kemper Baker ‘65 and his wife Bev also had a 1:1 dollar-for-dollar match that helped round out the afternoon donations.

748 DONORS Mick and Carol Outten had two gifts that challenged people to support the Chowan Fund and the Veterans Scholarship. The Science Department is in need of lab upgrades and Warren Chancey, along with Dr. Harold Babb ‘70, Betty Meiggs, Mick Outten ‘71, and Jamie Johnson, made significant gifts to challenge additional donors to this project and to get more awareness of the need for lab upgrades. Board of Trustees Vice Chair Dr. Harold Babb ’70 and his wife, June Slater Babb ’70, made the Hawks Nest student center fundraising effort a focus by challenging others to enhance the student recreational experience on campus. Wayne and Shirley Brown challenged donors to support scholarship programs by making a gift in memory or honor of someone important to them. Grace Brown challenged friends of the university to give in honor of loved ones to the Chowan Chapel. Numerous other challenges were created, including The Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce, Betty Jo Shepheard, alumni Barry Bradberry ‘73, Lynn Gruber Powell ’76, Jenay Nelson ‘12, Maurice Fluitt ‘09, Chad ‘92 and Jessica ‘92 Drake, Dr. Pamela Woodard ‘12, brothers Mark Parker and Al Parker, and Trustees Jane Burke, Lynette Bunch, Elaine Myers, Jesse E. Vaughan, Cecil Hollomon, and Linda Weaver.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT! 39

Three Decades OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF by Zoë Beale

Few individuals dedicate themselves to their work so fully; few put a cause – an institution – above themselves, time and time again. John M. Tayloe is one of those rare individuals. A Bertie County native and 1994 alumnus, Tayloe began his career at Chowan following his graduation, and time and time again, he has proved to be a devoted representative of the university. In his letter of retirement, John shared, “With my retirement, I am putting a bookend on my career in higher education. While this chapter will soon come to a close, I am pivoting at this phase in my life to public service. I have accepted a position to serve United States Senator Ted Budd as his Northeast North Carolina Regional Director. Chowan has more than prepared me for this next phase in life that is slated to start December 4, 2023.” As both the Executive Assistant to the President and the Executive Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving, the work for John was never done and never too much to handle. It is no surprise that Tayloe received the coveted Spirit of Chowan award in 2017 for his unwavering service to the university – day in and day out, his dedication to his alma mater has been interwoven into the fabric of his life. Without fail, he has represented Chowan with pride, dignity, and profound admiration for almost three decades. Through every challenge presented, Tayloe not only met expectations, but set new standards for the job that was being achieved. “One of the greatest joys in my life is helping others make a difference in the life of Chowan,” Tayloe expressed. “Connecting alumni and friends with the many opportunities to give is a rewarding experience.” THE PHILANTHROPIC REPORT

42

Tayloe’s retirement from the university marks the end of an era. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void that will be challenging to fill; he will be missed not only in the wake of the duties he tirelessly performed, but he will be missed in the silence where his laughter and positivity would be a sign of reassurance. His contributions to Chowan have been immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt by the entire community. In the words of President Charles Taylor, “John’s record of service to the University speaks for itself. He will forever be “Mr. Chowan.” Andy Wilson, Vice President for Development and Admissions, expressed his fondness for John with enthusiasm. “In my tenure working with Mr. Tayloe, I’ve witnessed unparalleled dedication and unwavering commitment. John Tayloe – ‘Mr. Chowan’ – has left an indelible mark on this institution through his tireless service. As he embarks on a new chapter, we express deepest gratitude for his remarkable contributions, and we are confident his legacy will inspire others at Chowan University.” As John Tayloe embarks on the next chapter of his life, Chowan University extends its deepest gratitude for his remarkable service and wishes him a fulfilling next step in his already successful career. His legacy will forever be etched in the history of Chowan, and his humble dedication will continue to inspire future generations of students and alumni.
