Chowan University is a four-year co-educational institution. Chowan opened its doors in 1848 as a four-year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female Institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992, the college returned to four-year status when it admitted a junior class. In April of 2006, then Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institution’s name from Chowan College to Chowan University.

FERNANDO ZUNIGA

INTERIM HEAD COACH | 3RD SEASON

Fernando Zuniga enters

his third season and first as Interim Head Coach of the Chowan women’s soccer team Zuniga noted, “Chowan University is a place of strong values and an amazing feel of family and community. Those were some of the reasons I decided to attend Chowan as an undergraduate student, and now, as a coach I believe it is a great place to continue my coaching career. I’m excited about the opportunity to become part of a program with such a rich history and to work alongside a coach with a vast amount of experience. I’m really looking forward to working with an amazing group of student-athletes and helping them to become successful on and off the field”. White added, “We are really excited to have Fernando join us. His experience as a student-athlete will be an asset. He has also done a great job with both soccer programs at Ridgecroft. He has a strong sense of values consistent with our vision, and he is passionate about teaching and learning aspects of coaching. It’s an exciting time for Chowan women’s soccer and Chowan University. We believe Fernando will help us reach our goals on and off the field”. Zuniga competed for the Chowan men’s soccer program for four seasons. He made 58 starts for the Chowan Blue and White, was named captain as a junior, and played an integral role in the team’s school-record 12-8 season in 2014. The Hawks competed in the NCCAA South Region semi-final that same season. In the spring of his senior year, Zuniga served as a student assistant with the men’s soccer program. He assisted with the planning of field training and strength and conditioning sessions. Additionally, he volunteered as part of the Hawks Soccer Academy.

10

Upon graduation, Zuniga gained coaching experience working with the Hawks Soccer Academy and serving as Head Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer Coach at Ridgecroft School. Zuniga managed all aspects of the varsity and junior varsity girls’ and boys’ soccer programs including training sessions, skill development, and teaching tactical and technical facets of the game. He graduated from Chowan in May, 2015 with a degree in Business Administration. During his time at Chowan, Zuniga was an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and was named to the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society, and the President’s List. He was also a Leadership Scholar. Zuniga resides in Murfreesboro.

2018 Season Preview

Chowan was picked third in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Polls behind Limestone and Belmont Abbey. The Blue and White will open the year on the road against NCAA Tournament opponent UNC Pembroke on August 30. The Braves secured the Peach Belt Conference Championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament after a 15-5-1 overall season. Chowan will host up-start program, Shaw, in their home opener two days later, September 1, at 3pm. Chowan will open up Conference Carolinas play against defending league champion, Limestone, on September 8. The Hawks will alternate league and non-league games in the month of September traveling to face Lincoln (Pa.) during the week before heading to Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees-McRae on September 15. CU will host Washington Adventist and Southern Wesleyan the following week prior to wrapping up the month against SAC powerhouse Wingate on the road and Erskine at home. In the month of October, Chowan kicks off the month with a midweek against Mount Olive at home on October 3 before heading to South Carolina to face North Greenville. Chowan will travel to Barton on October 10, then wrap up the home slate against King (Tenn.) and Converse on October 13 and 17

respectively.

The final three contests of the regular season will feature Emmanuel (Ga.), Catawba, and league power Belmont Abbey. After grabbing the #2 seed last season, the Hawks will look to vie for the title as the 2018 Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Championship starts on October 30. Chowan returns 16 players from last season’s record setting team. Returning for the Hawks is D2CCA All-American and Conference Carolinas Player of the Year in Carolina Lucci. Lucci posted a freshman leading 19 goals and 42 points, not only in the Conference Carolinas but in the country. Olivia Borer will look to continue to keep the ball out of the back of the net as the senior did so in 12 matches last season. Borer allowed only 10 goals last season for a 0.58 goals allowed average. The back-line for the Hawks continues to hold strong as Asia Fort, Shannon Park, Rebekah Langley, Sydney Henderson, and Ashlyn Smith anchor the defensive unit. Strong play in the midfield by Susan Balladares, Sierra Gonzalez, Sabrina Henderson, and Monae Moore will be key for the Hawks to continue their run.

CHOWAN HAWKS Women’s Soccer

After posting a program record 12-3-2 overall mark in their first season in the Conference Carolinas, Chowan will look to keep moving in the upward trajectory after finishing second in the league with an 8-2-1 record. The Hawks finished the season with a Conference Carolinas semifinals appearance falling to eventual league champion and NCAA tournament selection, Limestone.
