NEXT AUCTION | TUESDAY 22 MARCH FINE ART, ANTIQUES, STAMPS, SPORTING EFFECTS, GARDEN STATUARY Spring has finally sprung, and we are all starting to spend more time outdoors. Our March sale includes a good selection of stone troughs, urns and staddle stones to create a focal point in any sized garden.

A wrought iron circular tree seat will provide a shady place to sit and read on summer evenings, Lot 500 (estimate £350-450); two classical Campana shaped urns come ready planted with box plants, Lot 525 (estimate £500-700) and a pair of monumental terracotta vases will create a spectacularly dramatic entrance way, Lot 509 (estimate £350-450).

Coming inside, our sale offers an eye-catching array of paintings, furniture, ceramics and other antiques, with a special section of Sporting Art & Effects. Several studies of racehorses include ‘Rome’, winner of Lady Dudley’s Cup, painted by Charles E Gatehouse (1866-1952), Lot 98 (estimate £300-500). Among many antiquarian books featuring in the sale, the racing theme continues. A volume entitled Genius Genuine by Samuel Chifney of Newmarket was published in 1804 and the jockey author recounts famous horseracing exploits of the time, Lot 89 (estimate £80-120). A charming sculpture in bronze depicting a bloodhound following the scent was created by Sally Arnup (1930-2015) as Lot 683 an edition of just 10, Lot 111 (estimate £800£1,200). A group of earlier bronze sculptures by Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) includes an elegant Turkish Stallion, Lot 683 (estimate £150£200.

Lot 1

An important private collection and extensive range of Great British, British Empire and World stamps will feature in the March auction. This is one of the most important philatelic sales the firm has conducted in recent years. Collected during 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the Worcestershire philatelist paid particular attention to the collection’s presentation, beautifully displayed with pencilled margin descriptions highlighting the more important stamps.

The paintings section of the sale is led by two landscapes by Alfred de Breanski (1852-1928). Offered as Lots 1 and 2, the gentle river landscapes depicted in the glowing twilight ask £4,000-6,000 and £2,000£3,000 respectively.

Early Great British stamps include line engraved penny blacks, numerous 1d reds and 2d blues and some notable surface printed high value examples, notably a King Edward VII £1 green and King George V Seahorses. These, together with an unusual representation of other GB and World stamps are estimated to fetch between £1800 and £3,000.

Every stamp collector has stock books, these used to keep duplicates already in a collection as well as housing part of a collection no longer wanted.

There are about half a dozen stock books in the sale including some rare mint and used definitives from the reign of Queen Victoria through to Queen Elizabeth II; estimates for these lots range from £40 to £600.

An extensive representation of British Colonial stamps will be on offer, including early issues of the Australian States, Roos and higher values, £800-1200, Canadian States, £400-600, early Empire collections from India, £300-500, Malaya including the Japanese occupation, £400-600 and many others.

Fine rare world examples of Chinese Imperial and Republic stamps will be highly sort after with the Dragon and Dowager Republican stamps expected to realize £600-800 and scarcer overprinted definitives from the same country will gross in the region of £900.

A rare set of six drypoint etchings by William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931) depicting views of the River Tyne and surrounding area have been beautifully framed and are in ready-to-hang condition. They are accompanied by the original folio in which they were published as a limited edition of 160 copies, Lot 63 (estimate £1,000-1,500).

A group of seven oil paintings by John LeighPemberton show historical scenes but are painted in a style very evocative of the late 1950s. Although the artist’s name might not be familiar, his colourful illustrations in the Ladybird series of books have delighted generations of children. Lot 26 depicts the triumphant return of Henry V from Agincourt (estimate £300-500).

British Empire stamps from Aden-Zululand and world stamps from Abyssinia-Venezuela will find buyers from around the world.
