ABF has been supporting artists for over 200 years; today our aim is to enable emerging artists to launch, develop and sustain a career. We established the Step Change Programme to achieve this, working with Higher Education partners throughout England and Wales to deliver financial support, access to resources and mentoring opportunities to graduates of Fine and Applied Art subjects. Our Step Change Fellows are supported for twelve months, giving them a sustained period of time to focus on developing and nurturing their work. We recognise the difficulties faced by those from marginalised communities seeking to pursue a career in the arts. The Step Change Programme is therefore focused on graduates who would struggle to further their career without support. This could be someone who is disadvantaged through social, cultural or economic circumstances; who possesses the skill and ambition to embark upon a career as an artist and would benefit significantly from our support. Allan Laycock studied at Keighley College of Art and Sheffield College of Art, where he obtained both the National Diploma in Design and the Art Teacher’s Diploma. He began his career as a Designer & Visualiser with advertising agencies and design groups in Norwich, Wellington, New Zealand and London up to 1974 when he was appointed Lecturer in Graphic Design in the Faculty of Vocational Studies at Gloucester College of Art and Design. Allan was primarily a landscape artist, and painted all landscapes in situ, at one sitting – rarely in a studio – using acrylics as a watercolour medium. During his long life, he exhibited all over the West Country. Much of his work features the Cotswolds, although excursions as far afield as New Zealand, Portugal and Croatia produced some exciting views. Allan was a member of several art societies and his work is to be found in worldwide private and public collections. Allan’s work has appeared on TV, and he was the Commentator on the BBC production of “Art in Agriculture”. His subject matter is usually a rural scene, but from the less familiar viewpoint, painted ‘on the day, as it is’ with delightful spontaneity and authenticity. In 2018, we were proud that Allan asked Chorley’s to host an exhibition 90@90, timed to coincide with his 90th birthday. The paintings he had selected sold so quickly that we had to ask him to bring in additional works to meet the demand. Today’s exhibition focusses to a great extent on Allan’s Cotswold landscapes, but also includes some views of Norfolk, Portugal and Croatia. Please note that the majority of paintings are unframed, though some have mounts. All measurements are the image size. The proceeds of all paintings sold will be donated to Allan’s choice of charity, The Artists’ Benevolent Fund (Registered Charity No. 270585 )
