YASH CHOPRA ARCHITECT

ABOUT ME

As a student, Architecture since early days has bought tremendous changes to my thinking philosophies of design. It has made me understand that without a philosophy the true value of a design cannot be recognisable and can often fail when to stand true to its purpose .It has prepared me to challenge the conventional ways we think towards a problem and produce challenging yet efficient solutions. My goal has been to continuously expand my pool of knowledge and skills in architecture and design, with a belief in dedication, hard work and eagerness to learn at all possible times.

WILDLIFE RESEARCH & REHABLITITAION CENTRE-KUTCH, GUJARAT ACADEMICS

PROJECT BRIEF:

As we humans have grown and spread across the globe through time, we have been in a constant battle with wildlife, over expanding ones own population and surviving. We have competed with them, preyed on them and even got ourselves preyed. This rivalry with wildlife hasn’t seen its end yet, especially in a country like India where the population of humans is increasing at a much faster rate than that of its decreasing wildlife, combined with a rapid pace of development. With time architecture has grown and provided some of the best solutions to some of the most challenging issues around, and still continous to do.... It may be one of the best tools to repair the damages that have been done. It may be a small step, but with its intervention we maybe able to achieve a difference in ecology. The aim of the project is to design a architectural setup which can simulate a bio-diversity system to conserve the breed and protect the endemic species of Little Rann of Kutch. The architecture of this project will work towards reshaping the landscape and natural reserves on a large scale with setup of natural bio reserves, research labs, specimen centers souvenir area, wildlife observing zones etc. This architectural setup would also educate people about the importance of this vast bio-reserve and its species and also create spaces where we can understand its ecology and how best can we protect for its future scope of florishment.

ABOUT SITE

Rann which means a barren land with no productivity or the remnants of a destroyed land. The rann of kutch is desolated area, sun baked and saline clay desert shimmering with the image of perpetual mirage. The rann of kutch is divided into parts : The Greater rann of kutch & The little rann of kutch.

PROPOSED SITE

The proposed site is one of the abandoned piece of land that is situated at the periphery of the sanctuary. It is also situated on of the unprotected routes, often used by poachers, hunters and villagers to do illegal trading of salt and the protected species residing in the sanctuary. The site is also located near the breeding grounds of various species of birds and wild animals, hence make it an ideal place for research and documentation purposes.

SITE ANALYSIS PROPOSED SITE PLAN

Diagram 1 demonstrates the analysis of a built mass on the proposed site. It shows how wind and heat impact a mass.

Diagram 2 demonstrates the analysis of the same built mass that has been rotated, to reduce the heat impact and to improve the natural air flow of a given mass. The same principle has been applied while developing the overall massing for the proposed design.

MASSING EVOLUTION

The site plot is divided into two parts. One part for the built mass and the other to create artificial landscape for rehabilitation and research purposes, which would further merge into the existing landmass.

Dividing the built mass into two parts and creating a central pathway that connects to the santuary .The large built mass would house facilites of the new wildlife santuary and the small one for local community to display their artwork.

Dividing the built masses into three equal parts. The three large built masses, will be Rehabilitation center, Research & analysis with public amenities such as library and a cafe. They would also have individual coutyards. The local community center would house an exhibition ,art gallery and adminstartion department.

Applying the principle dereived from site analysis, creating angular faces for all the built structures to reduce the impact of heat and to improve the quality of natural ventilation.

SITE-1 - INFORMAL MARKET-(Kalpana Stores)

Site 1 is located along side one of the very famous eatery stores right at the beginning of the street. The site is a narrow lane that is surrounded by residential housing units on three sides. The programme for this site has been chosen in a manner that allows local communities in and around the street to display various skills and productivity, and also to enhance the existing eatery that would attract more population towards it. The design programme proposed was to develop a informal market space flexible enough to adapt to various occasions. Activities would include variety of food kiosks to various exhibition spaces.

SITE-2 - COMMUNITY PLAZA & PUBLIC LIBRARY- (Middle Street)

Site 2.was selected primarily on the basis of its rich heritage and cultural values that are seen as perfect reflection in each house that stands still more than 5 Decades. The Topologies that were observed as the part of the study , highlights the true essence of a urban village. It also is a reflection of how different communities that have settled over a long period of time co-exist in the truest form .The program was formulated to incorporate major markers of the urban village and to magnify the sense of communal gatherings with positive interventions . Since the site was central part of street , the ideology behind the design was to magnify the sense of community that is already been established since the very beginning and also help the local business flourish by designing appropriate spaces for them. Green spaces were designed to act as a filter between the built and the unbuilt. A variety of Community spaces were added which acted as catalyst for the locals and outsiders to interact and expand the sense of community living. Apart from designing these spaces the main challenge was to connect them all together, hence a central spine was designed that would help connect the spaces.

Site 3 is currently an open piece of land that is surrounded by old and new residential housing structures. It is located near to the end of the Chapel road street and is widely used as a parking space by the locals. The proposed programme for the site was to house a community kitchen along with guest housing for tourist who wish to stay amongst the locals during their visit, especially in the festive season of Diwali and Christmas. Having the community kitchen right below the guest housing, it allows the both locals and the tourist to be a part of and to indulge in major festive gatherings and events,

The Programe for the site was to have two seperate functions that serve the community yet be showcased as single unit.the design process started with selecting a basic form that would house the design intend, which was a rectangle. Plus the form would perfectly blend with the existing topology of the street that surrounds thes site. The next stage was to carve out a common area that would act as interactive space and would also connect the two different parts of the design. The Project. The volume was divided equally into two parts The bottom structure was dedicated to a community kitchen service, which would be occupied by both the locals and the tourists. The above volume is used to design a very simple and low cost guest housing which would allow the visiting tourist to be housed within the street and blend with local community.

PUBLIC HEALTHCARE CENTER-JETPOR,GUJARAT 03. ACADEMICS

PROJECT BRIEF:

Jetpor is a small village which is situated at the border of the state of Maharashtra and Gujarat with a population count of less than 1000 people. Basic facilities like education and health care, villagers have to travel to the neighbouring villages on a regular basis, which are situated far away. The current health care centre setup by the local governing body didn’t serve to fullest capacity. The project aims to redesign the healthcare centre, which would address multiple problems at once, with better functioning system that provides the necessary aid for the villagers as well as the neighbouring villages.

ABOUT SITE:

The presently built healthcare centre is built on a 30 X40 M piece agricultural land which is equivalent to the area of a one room apartment, and only equipped with minimal facilities required to treat a simple case of illness. This has forced the villagers to travel a huge distance in the city to get the appropriate treatments for them selves.

MFAR - RED SANDERS-BANGLORE, KARNATAKA

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The high rise building which will be constructed is part of India’s most prestigious IT park. The architect of the Building used Red pigmento zinc to highlight the service areas of the building. To compliment the facade, Corton Steel is used to highlight certain elements, part of the landscape design scheme.

At the entrance, stepped planters wrapped with corton steel are designed with pylons that resemble the shape and design of RED SANDER tree, a native species which is illegal to grow. The entrance and the rear side are connected through a walkway that comprises of kiosk, open air seating and a restaurant plaza. Rear side has a long sewage drain, which was dealt with the concept of having a fast growing and dense forest with the help ofthe technique famouslyknown as Miyawaki, whichwas invented byJapanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.

My Contributions Included:

1. Working and resolving the conceptual planning and design.

2. Working on the 3D model and graphical representations for the same.

3 Preparing the final presentation with appropriate data for clients approval.

4. Working on the design development stage and issuing of working drawings for the same.
