BAT OBSERVATORY TOWER Site: Houston, Texas Instructor: Ross Wienert Year: Fall 2018 The site for the bat observatory tower is on the slope of the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, right next to the Waugh Drive Bridge. This proposal represents a more natural prototype of the Buffalo Bayou, with a vertical sense of urban prototype from the heart of Houston downtown.

Rather than the horizontal observation platform, the proposal embraces verticality with a small footprint and elevates the program’s space to heighten one’s experience of the tree canopy around the site. The core of the proposal integrates both the spiritual experience of the surrounding urban nature and the natural habitat of the bat by separating the elevations into different perspectives for visitors to experience a variety of moments.

PLASTIC RECYCLING CENTER Site: Houston, Texas Instructor: Rafael Beneytez-Durán Year: Fall 2021 With great optimism and the ideals of the oil energy consumption’s society, millions of barrels, shipped by cargos, parade through Buffalo Bayou every day. The incoming oil is transformed into a million tons of plastic waste that ironically (partially) will flow back into the Gulf, swimming in front of Brady Island. Plastic waste stacked up on the island created “The Plastic Mountain.” which become the challenge of this project.

This proposal to hide the recycling centre under plastic mountains and let part of the building emerge from the mountain has the metaphor of a sense of hope for the future generation, and express empathy for mother nature by consuming the plastic waste through the tower of hope while letting visitors witness the path of recovery.

HOUSTON INNOVATION CANTER Site: Houston, Texas Instructor: Emily Moore Year: Spring 2018 The Houston exploration centre situated in the heart of Houston serves as a connection of the circulation paths in this particular area of Houston by connecting the transportation and people through the design of this building. Using the proposal of the design to create a social space for people to communicate, socialize while sinking in the vegetation around the exploration centre become one of the strategies in connecting people. In addition, the elevated copper workspace located on the upper floor has visual communication in-between the ground floor and upper floor visitors. The copper exterior at the upper floor workspace also serves as a material timeline by using the natural oxidation method.
