WELCOME TO EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EARLY LEARNERS IN

PRE-K & K CONFERENCE – an island-wide event focusing on early learning –presented by the Long Island Regional Technical Assistance for Pre-K and Early Childhood Education!

This is the ninth year of our full-day conference event, formerly known as Best Practices for Teaching Pre-K & K

This year’s event, Expanding Opportunities for Early Learners in Pre-K & K Conference, presented by the Long Island Regional Technical Assistance Center for Pre-K & K is, once again, being offered as three separate and unique opportunities for professional development. This annual conference continues to grow in popularity, as it refects and supports the wide-ranging topics proposed by our community of early childhood educators and families.

Since our frst event, a workshop on Election Day, 2014, our offerings have been attended by thousands of practitioners. This year, we were intentional in ensuring that our offerings are accessible for families, public school districts, child care providers, community-based organizations (CBOs), and private and parochial schools. We’re proud of the professional development, technical assistance and resources about best practices we’ve made available – and of the growing support for developmentally appropriate practices at the Pre-K and K levels.

In the past, the Long Island Pre-K Initiative was made possible by the generous support of The Rauch Foundation and the Hagedorn Foundation. Now, we are entering a new era with earmarked state funding for the Long Island Regional Technical Assistance Center for Pre-K & Early Childhood, that will enable us to continue many of our programs, such as these conferences, and will add new avenues of support for schools and families. This includes a partnership with CUNY’s Leadership Initiative for early educators, supporting families as partners through leadership development opportunities and more!

We welcome you to this year’s conference, Expanding Opportunities for Early Learners in Pre-K & K, and invite you to take advantage of new and expanded professional development and services in the coming months.

Welcome from the LI-RTAC’s Center Director

Greetings! Welcome to the 2024 Expanding Opportunities for Early Learners in Pre-K & K Conference!

On behalf of the Long Island Regional Technical Assistance Center for Pre-K and Early Childhood Education (LI-RTAC) – our core advisory board, center staff and volunteers –welcome to the ninth annual conference! We are truly excited to have you here where hundreds of us have gathered from all across Long Island for this experience.

Two years ago, we had a bold vision at the LI-RTAC to expand opportunities for early childhood professionals across all settings – school districts, child care providers, private schools, community-based organizations and more – who all have an impact on a Pre-K learner through our annual convening experience. This vision resulted in us now providing two full-day conference offerings to ensure that there is greater access for professionals with different work schedules to take advantage of the resources and expertise shared. We hope that your time at Suffolk County Community College and/or Crest Hollow Country Club will foster opportunities to expand your knowledge, deepen relationships with existing and new connections, as well as learn best practices to strengthen your capacity as early childhood professionals.

The work you do each and every day on behalf of young children and their families is vital to the future of our region. We thank you for your commitment, and hope that this event provides an intentional space to learn, grow, connect and reflect together as a community. Thank you to all of our sponsors, funding partners, workshop presenters, exhibitors, venue staff and volunteers for your incredible support of the annual conference.

We also are thankful for our keynote workshop presenters this year, Dr. Nell Duke and Mr. Unique Wilson, for your generosity of time and wisdom that you will share with our community of professionals. We are especially grateful to the Conference and Professional Development Committee and its co-chairs, Dr. Adrienne Robb-Fund and Sheryl Haimovich, for your leadership, service, and expertise in curating this experience. I also want to extend our deepest gratitude to our center staff for all of their hard work toward the success of the conferences – Dr. Adrienne, Sheryl, Dr. Florence Prophete-Barbour, Dr. Elaine Kanas and Brittany Harper. Thank you to our team members at Choice for All, including Lynette Batts, Brittany Harper, Jahshua Taylor, Gloria Rivas, Charles Caple III and Saniyah Wyche for all of your behind-the-scenes magic; making this year’s conferences a resounding success. Special thanks to Judy Hynes, Associate Director – Regional Schools and Instructional Programs at Nassau BOCES for your partnership and endless support toward the success of the LI-RTAC.

Last, but certainly not least, thank you all taking the time out of your busy schedules to join us. Your dedication to the profession does not go unnoticed! We wish you a fabulous, productive, and engaging conference experience!

EARLY CHILDHOOD CONVERSATIONS: GROWTH BEGINS WITH OUR YOUNGEST LEARNERS (WORKSHOP PROVIDED BY SCHOLASTIC)

Presenter: Marcus Ferrara (MFerrara@Scholastic.com)

The need to focus attention on foundational learning and early skills with access to books year-round is now more important than ever. Some of the most distinguishing features of any early literacy initiative is the emphasis on access to a sound early childhood program, engagement of families, and learning the whole year. With a renewed focus on early learning, the case for prevention is clear. During this workshop, participants will learn about a sound early learning program, the importance of authentic literature, how to extend the learning to home with families, and gain access to year-round learning.

Presenter: Kimberly Greenfeld (kimberlygreenfeld927@gmail.com)

Learn foundational PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) for young children that will result in greater positive child outcomes and less educator burnout. Strategies for use of positive language, age-appropriate behavioral supports, and redirection to tasks will be shared. Learn how these strategies promote social and emotional health for young children. As a result of this workshop, participants will learn to respond appropriately and immediately to behavior challenges in an individualized fashion, proactively use positive language to prevent challenging behaviors, and learn how to use strategies such as routines, transition tools, and preference-assessed positive reinforcement to proactively address student behaviors.

Is it math time, story time, center time or art time? How can you do it all? During this workshop, participants will explore practical and easy routines, games, and activities to infuse math learning throughout your day to spark your students mathematically thinking in developmentally appropriate ways. Join Ms. Lufrano as she presents her engaging workshop that supports the idea that math is everywhere, and that we are the facilitators of math learning by creating opportunities and facilitating math talk in our classrooms.

HIDDEN PREJUDICE: UNCOVER HOW IT SHAPES WHAT WE SEE, THINK, AND DO

Presenter: Paula Mills (elitescholarsacademy@gmail.com)

Implicit bias occurs when we unconsciously attribute particular qualities to members of a social group. We may not realize the assumptions we’re making about people from different races, genders, abilities, statuses, and more. But we all do it, and it impacts the choices that we make every day. We will probe the workings of our brains to discover how implicit biases form and infuence our everyday decisions. You will learn how to interrupt and transform biased behavior with a single step featured in the book Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do, by author Dr. Jennifer L. Eberhardt.

EMPOWERING EVERY LEARNER: STRATEGIES AND PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT FOR STUDENTS WITHOUT IEPS OR 504S

Presenter: Gaby Paulino (gabypaulinopena@gmail.com)

Join us for an insightful training session designed to support students who face academic or behavioral challenges, but do not have formal accommodations like IEPs or 504 plans. This session will highlight the importance of adapting instruction to cater to the diverse needs of these students. Participants will discover practical strategies to enhance their instructional practices, ensuring that all students can succeed in the classroom. Additionally, Ms. Paulino will emphasize the vital role of parental involvement in the adaptation process, providing effective techniques to engage and collaborate with parents.
