I

MEDIATOR X INTERFACE My exploration between architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism started right here in my country of Taiwan. Growing up on this beautiful island, I have come to marvel at its architectural and landscape complexities – a result of its recurring and devastating natural cataclysms. I have experienced the great destruction caused by earthquakes and typhoons, seen the countless temporary shelters for victims, and witnessed the endless rebuilding. It is this constant stream of unforgettable scenes of dilapidation and suffering that sparked my interest in exploring the relationship between urban, landscape architecture, architecture, natural environments of both natural and political causes, and its refugees.

I have always seen myself as the 'mediator' between human and nature – the person who use architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design strategies as the 'interface' to create gentle and smooth connections between the two extraordinarily different substrates. I have been searching for how best to reconcile this complex intersection by working on various projects that shown in this portfolio.

While natural disasters and man-made destructions are neither controllable nor predictable, cross-disciplinary designer has the ability to flexibly and effectively respond. In 2016, I founded Atelier TBD, a studio that explores potential possibilities of all kinds of environmental challenges and respondes via diverse fields of professionals, including graphic, architecture, landscape, urban strategy, curation, ergonomic support, animation, publication to name only a few. I aim to continue my adventure as well as to assist the countless others who need a better mediator and an interface with their environment, whether natural or manmade.

I started to intervene the camp by bringing waste warm water from refinery into the camp. With the airdrop package I designed, refugees can easily set up a simple heating system by themselves. At the same time I deployed a rammed earth wall to establish a reference point in the camp.

This massive building not only forms a considerable shadow area during the daytime but also became an obstacle of the wind system of the inner city. In addition, it separates the open spaces of Zhong-shan district and becomes a break point in the Taipei city.

I divided the volume into three different parts: (1) a light and transparent open space at the lower level (from ground floor to the third floor), (2) a semi-transparent public space at the north side, and (3) private housing units located on the south side of the building. The building becomes a porous and permeable volume that allows sunlight and wind passing through. With 7 different modularize units and the adaptable housing system, the building serves as a sponge collecting the middle-class generation and their residential memory segments.

TYPICAL RAINING HOUR

The activities happen in the camp includes refugees' everyday routines, monthly events and annual celebrations. Most of the refugees are now living in the 3X4 square meter tent. They do almost everything in this small, enclosed space. They have neither proper foods nor a proper cooking area.

During the monsoon season, they need to stay in the humid, warm tent for almost entire day.

Public area and common facilities in the camp are insufficient and unorganized. Refugees do not have enough public social spaces, neither do most of them have work or income. These immutable and frozen scene weaken Rohyingas' sense of their coordinates. The most ironic thing is that Bangladesh government cut down all the trees in the camp because they claim that these trees make Royingyas at home. The sun exposure became the most critical issue to both people and environment.

MATERIALS X Tectonics Due to the budget limitation, 95% of the reused materials in this project were provided by donors.

The used materials include kassod wood, ply wood, pine wood, C-beam, I-beam, L-beam, and the gabion fence. Since these materials have different structure performance, we decided to use C-beam and kassod wood to construct the main structure, and combined gabion fence with L-beam to set up the ecological gabion wall.

In order to fulfill the quick release system, I chose steel tube as another main material which can be easily fixed on any walls and provide stability and more storage spaces as well.

Furthermore, steel tube has the potential ability to enlarge or reduce its size to fit in any size of spaces. The outline of the tube is also an advantage for 3D printing components to connect without any glues or screws. PLA plates and tubes also create a cactus cultivation area that allows me to cultivate cacti and other plants at the same time.

The development and the future of the military landscape in kinmen After the implementation of ‘Mini Three links’ agreement in 2001, Kinmen government was eager to develop this island. However, without comprehensive consideration and preservation plan, the military landscape is drastically destroyed by the developers for hotels and residential units. Tourism development ignores and eradicates this incredible history, and does not take advantage of these unique historical structures that have reshaped the land, the ecology, and local settlement.

The precious historical military landscape has become a contested landscape. The research and workshop aims to document the disappearing military landscape in Kinmen and propose various repurpose strategies to the government in order to preserve the world largest remained Cold War landscape.

02 NCKU 103 THESIS DESIGN PROJECT review [ EDITOR / exhibition visual design ] / 2014 This is a collective review publication of thesis projects of NCKU 2014. As the editor and visual designer of the book and exhibition, I was responsible for setting up the standard colors of the visual design and the template layout. I also had to design the cover and poster, and meet with the printing shop. This book aims to present the diversity among 5 studios that focused on different domains among architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design projects.

The most challenging task for me and my editor team was that we had to properly manage our time between thesis design work in order to distribute the posters and flyers 2 months prior to the final critic and publish the book 2 weeks after the final critic.

03 exhibition: 2016 tectonic becoming [ PROJECT MANAGER & EDITOR ] / 2016 "Tectonic Becoming" is the most significant architecture biennale in Taiwan. The main idea of this exhibition aims to discuss and display the relationship between architects, construction companies, and clients by 30 complete, outstanding architecture projects in the past 2 years. Each invited-studio was required to display both architecture drawings, photographs, full-scale models, and a detail section model.

As the project manager and the editor of this project, I cooperated with the participated companies as well as more than thirty participated teams. In order to conquer the structural and budget issues, we explored the possibility of thin carbon fiber tube, the structure material of kites, as the main frame material.

03 Camouflage island 2019 penny white project fund [ project director / editor ] / 2019 Camoufalge Island: Re-imagining the Contested Landscape of Kindmen was one of the selected projects of 2019 Penny White Project Fund of Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. Began in 2016, I conducted onsite field research in Kinmen every year during summer time to document the disappearing Cold War ladnscape.

After receiving the research funding from Harvard GSD, I further pubished the book to present the collective work from all the participated researchers, students.

Additionally, I continuously conduct one-week workshop once every year since 2019 as a way to invite more architecture professionals, landscape experts, historian, students and people from every field to meet this precious island, preserve its unique military landscape and irreplacable historical context.

04 2020 Tainangram NCKU Cross-grades competition [ curator & EDITOR ] / 2020 Cross-grades Competition is one of the most significant event in NCKU since 2017. 'The prototype of future human's living and learning environment' is the core proposition of 2020's competition. More than 45 groups explored the site in Tainan, worked on their proposals with various approach during winter vacation and presented in hardcopy drawings, models, digital animation, and video representation. The juries of this year are Pacharapan Ratananakorn and Varat Limwibul from PAVA architects, Luis Enrique Flores and Armida Fernandez from Estudio ALA. With the serious impact of COVID-19, built-environment designers and planners is required to re-think how the space and programmes can be reorganized in order to fulfill the needs of new globalized living pattern.
