One Hundred Thirty-First
Commencement School Song
Words and music by Guy E. Moulton To our school upon the hillside come and sing a rousing song, Till the echoes clear send back our cheer in accents loud and strong. Then ever true to Gold and Blue shall be our loyal throng, So we’ll hail our alma mater, ’tis to her our hearts belong. Chorus Cheer then for Choate! All hail her bright name! Far thro’ the land we all shall bear her great fame, forever. Down thro’ the ages renown’d shall she be. Fairest in all the land, ever thy name shall stand, Ever we all sing to thee!
GO CHOATE!
R Academic Apparel The academic apparel worn by the faculty has its origins in 14th century England, where at colleges long gowns were prescribed to “avoid excess in apparel.” American colleges joined together in 1895 to establish a standard code of academic dress specifying three types of gowns: the bachelor’s degree gown has pointed sleeves; the master’s degree gown has oblong sleeves with the front cut in an arc; the doctoral degree gown is trimmed in velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Hoods, the most distinctive feature of academic dress, are lined with the official colors of the college, while the color of the border indicates the field of learning in which the degree was earned.
