001 - Urban Hearth

This project focuses on the introduction of natural light openings into a sunken space. The task is to design an underground space in an urban neighbourhood by exploring and developing the surface openings and underground topology. The design was motivated by the idea of designing an underground public space where anyone can enter and find rest from a busy urban lifestyle. Central to the space is the layout of the constellation Ara, symbol of hearth, laid out as large light openings amidst a scattered range of small light openings across the roof. The underground space is divided into five smaller pockets of space for users to occupy. These spaces have small hills which users can rest on or use to shield themselves from the rest of the space for more privacy.

002 - Tranquisolation

This project was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic at its worst, where international travel was heavily restricted, and mental stress was at an all-time high. The focus of this project was thus to explore and design a cabin for a low-density natural environment (e.g. plains, or fields), where the user can live for short periods of time to destress and disconnect from a chaotic reality.

The cabin is designed in 2 sections: an open living space and a closed private space. The open living space has large wall windows for natural lighting as well as great views into the natural environment so as to allow for an immersive and therapeutic experience. The closed private space allows for seclusion and privacy for the individual, easily accessible as desired.

003 - Croissant Waves

This was an exploratory project primarily focusing on designing an open space within dense urban environments with the concept of articulated grounds at its core. The approach undertaken was to experiment and explore potential architectural forms by applying aseries of simple geometric transformations on a 25 cm x 25cm piece of paper.

Taking inspiration from a croissant, strips of paper were bent and curled in sequence to form a series of folded frames which become both the floor and the roof of the architecture. The strips vary in length and degree of bending to create a layered effect when the shape is viewed along the length. The resultant form becomes a long corridor enclosed by the tail ends of the folds, providing a semi-isolated space for users to enjoy, detaching themselves from the busy and chaotic urban environment.

004 - Ground Underground

This project explores the lateral and altitudinal relationships between architectural spaces and the surrounding environment, cummulating in a cottage located in a certain forest in Singapore.

This design explored developing a symmetrical floor plan, then intentionally breaking the symmetry in the subsequent stages. This resulted in a cottage with three different elevations across the plan as well as two vastly different roof structures.

Pushing the boundaries of “becoming immersed in nature”, this design has no doors. having an open access and a wall window running across the length of one side of the cottage. The access and the wall window are on the same plane as the surrounding landscape to keep users at ground level, as though they are out in the forest. The central section of the cottage is however, sunken under the terrain to create a space from which the user will be able to look up at the stars at night or the morning sky to enjoy another aspect of the natural environment.

005 - Simplexity

This project explores the potential of a satellite branch for the Museum of Modern Art, New York in Singapore. To be situated in the Civic District together with other recognised museums like the National Gallery and the Asian Civilisation Museum, the architecture is to both stand out with another innovative approach to connect and engage the public with contemporary works, as well as remain grounded and integrated in the context of its site.
