Healing Communities through Landscape Bromley-by-Bow Gas Works

Gillespies Highly Commendended Award

Healing Communities through Landscape is a transformative design project focused on developing trauma-informed environments for justice-involved individuals transitioning from prison to community living. This project explores the evolution of community engagement and trauma-informed design principles in redefining landscape solutions for rehabilitation. From ahighlights the importance of ongoing community involvement, flexible programming, and thoughtful planting design in mitigating trauma triggers and fostering healing. Healing Communities through Landscape sets a new standard for compassionate, inclusive design in post-release settings by prioritising the well-being and reintegration of justice-involved individuals.

Newham Council Local Plan Surrounding Land Use

Strategies

1. Provide a space for skill building, education, and therapy, together with a horticultural rehabilitation programme.

2. Utilise trauma-informed design principals

3. Improving accessibility to the site and connections with the wider area (public transport, walking routes, cycle network).

4. Enhance the Lea Valley green corridor, restoring native habitat types.

5. Developing the site to allow for flood water to be absorbed and held.

6. Reconnect users with the river through improving access to water’s edge and increasing sustainable recreation.

7. Maintaining industrial heritage while making the site safe from contamination threats.

8. Creating opportunities for recreation, play, and refuge.

Little Seven Playarea Bromley-by-Bow Gas Works

Parental relationships are significantly damaged by time in prison. It is therefore essential that there is space for these relationships to be rebuilt. Often offending is intergenerational and linked to the break down of relationship and the trauma experienced by separation from parents during childhood. This space aims to create a place where relationships can be rebuilt and connections remade. This is a long term approach to reducing reoffending rates.

Alternative seating and path arrangements allow users to have autonomy over the level of social interaction the desire. Wider, more direct paths allow for more fastpaced movement across the site, while meandering, narrower, secondary paths offer space for contemplation. This is the same for individual seating areas, while larger seating arrangements can foster group activity and conversation.

Reflection Space Bromley-by-Bow Gas Works

Reflection Space was developed to be a space that people could use to reflect and heal, sunken to reduce the inputs of outside distractions. However, it also has a space that could bring people together through art and performance.

Life on the Water Chelmsford City Centre

The aim of this project was to mitigate the potential effects of Urban Heat Island effect in Chelmsford City Centre. Careful and extensive site analysis was undertaken to understand how the effects of warming could be minimised under future climate models. While heating was the main issue the brief addressed, it was important that other climatic future fluctuation was considered. For example, increased sporadic and heavy rainfall, make it likely that flooding will also greatly impact Chelmsford City Centre.

The Masterplan aimed to connect the green fingers of Chelmsford through the city centre, bolstering the green infrastructure, while creating a space for leisure and recreation.
