N OBU LL DAIRY NOBULL Dairy is a robotic dairy farm proposed to be on the southeast corner of UNL’s East Campus. This dairy is part of a movement towards transparency in the dairy industry as well as agrotourism.

The main challenge within this project was finding a way to implement transparency while also respecting the privacies and “flow” of each program. WE SPLIT THE BUILDING BASED OFF OF ITS PROGRAM. THE BARN AND BARN OPERATIONS ARE GROUPED, WHILE PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND GENERAL OPERATIONS ARE SEPARATE.

ONE OF THE WAYS WE FOCUSED ON THE FLOW OF OUR BUILDING WAS THROUGH PUBLIC CIRCULATION. OUR PUBLIC CIRCULATION FOLLOWS THE MILK PROCESS, IN THREE DIFFERENT STEPS: LACTATING, FOOD PROCESSING AND MILK PROCESSING.

AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR CONCEPT IS VIEWS. WITH THIS CONCEPT WE FOCUSED ON THE AREAS OF THE BUILDING THAT NEED TO BE SEEN FROM THE PUBLIC. FOCUSING BOTH ON ARIEL VIEWS AND SIDE VIEWS OF THE MILK PROCESS

THE FORM OF OUR BUILDING CAME FROM OUR DIFFERENT CONCEPTS AND LAYING OUT THE PROGRAM IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEM. WE THEN USED OUR ROOF AS A MEMBRANE TO SPAN ACROSS OUR BUILDING TO MAKE IT APPEAR UNIFIED AS ONE FORM INSTEAD OF THREE.

OUR FACADE CONSISTS OF A RUSTED CORTEN STEEL AND GLASS. A MAIN FOCUS OF OUR FACADE WAS TO SHOW EXTERIOR VIEWS INTO CERTAIN SPACES THAT WE WANTED THE PUBLIC TO HAVE A GLIMPSE OF. SOME OF THESE VIEWS CONSISTED OF THE BARN, SOME OF THE PUBLIC SPACES, INCLUDING THE CATWALK AND MAIN STAIR. THESE DIFFERENT VIEWS ARE PLACED ON EVERY SIDE OF THE BUILDING.

DESIGNING PROPER ACCESS POINTS FOR STAFF AND VISITORS WAS AN IMPORTANT GOAL WE ACHIEVED IN OUR DESIGN. MAKING SURE THERE WERE EFFICIENT ACCESS POINTS FOR STAFF AND MAINTENANCE, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING ACCESS AND PARKING TO THE PUBLIC NEAR THE MAIN ENTRY.

Site features include a mild grade change of 5’ as well as densely wooded land to the north and south of the site.

The implementation of our separate but transparent strategy shows up in the two new roads (public and private), the two parking lots (public and staff) with a bus path stretching across the two, and the cow spaces bridging the two. This is further outlined in the diagrams to the right.

The structural strategy aims to act as a bridge between programs. The team accomplished this by utilizing a truss system spanning across the three overarching programs (pictured below). This was also a way to guide the publics focus towards the barn and create a dynamic roof condition that piques interest from the exterior.

To the right, is a drawing that shows more development towards a completed structure. This diagram also shows the separations and overlap of programs.

Another driving factor behind this design was implementing and respecting the requests from each discipline of the dairy industry that we consulted.

The barn side of this facility uses a tunnel ventilation system. This is a system in which air is pulled in through an opening to the north and pushed out through the south facade with the help of exhaust fans (pictured below). This strategy helps keep conditions optimal for the cows.

The choice to opt for tunnel ventilation influenced the layout of the barn side of the facility in that we kept the sick pen and veterinary spaces at the southern most end to prevent infection of the entire barn.

Curriculum Flow Chart

The preliminary stages of this project included an analysis of projected usage as well as development of a curriculum and program specialties in relation the the existing infrastructure on KCAI’s campus.

The team decided that “wellness” would be the specialty and also be the driving factor behind the design (architectural health). This was implemented in the site strategy, program, and facade development.

01 BUILDABLE VOLUME Given roughly 30,000 sqft of buildable space on the KCAI campus in Kansas City, MO.

05 ISOLATE ADDITIONAL PROGRAM Adding our additional program on the top of the building to maximize views along with isolation from other programs.

06 ADD SUN SHADING FACADE Our facade is made of terracotta baguettes to shade the interior as well as providing views of the surroundings.

TECHR EHAB TECH-rehab at Null Island aims to help refocus one’s attention through the mode of vigilance. The main idea of this project is exploration and the form of the center helps facilitate that with the three outstretching bars linked by a courtyard.

The first floor is split into three bars. The southern most bar is patient living focused and contains a lounge, dining, kitchen, and living on the second floor.

The second bar, angled northeast, is admin focused. It contains a library, office spaces, a conference room, and greenhouse.

Pictured to the left are photos of a church I worked on during my internship nat RDG Planning & Design.

I worked across a couple 3D modeling softwares to make the building and then used those files to help me construct a physcial model.

The model is of the proposed renovation and addition to Lord of Life Lutheran Church located in Elkhorn, NE. It will be displayed at the church for approximately two years as a fundraising effort.
