Community awards A WARSOP resident who has transformed his neighbourhood with colourful community planting was among four people to receive Mayor’s Awards in Mansfield. Kate Allsop presented the award to Amby Taylor, who was nominated for his exceptional work in his community. Mayor Allsop said: “The land outside the Homesteads bungalows was looking a little tired and Amby kindly asked if he could do something about that. “He rolled his sleeves up and began digging and weeding the area, which he has filled with lovely planting. This has all been done at his own cost. What a lovely thing to do — it has made a real difference for the elderly who live in that area.” Three other awards went to Helen Cíesíelskí, Tony Dowson and Pam Easton, who all volunteer for Mansfield Welfare Rights. Mayor Allsop said: “These volunteers are true community champions and do an exceptional job helping people in need by listening, advising, assisting in filling forms, and dealing with letters of enquiry from external agencies. “This service takes so much worry from people’s shoulders and this award is our thanks for the invaluable work they do.”

1ST KIRKBY-IN-ASHFIELD Guides ready for their litter pick.
Caring Guides
INSPIRED by the Clean For The Queen campaign, Guides volunteered to help clear Kirkby’s Portland Park of litter in a bid to make the area better for everyone. The 13 girls involved were members of 1st Kirkby-in-Ashfield Guide Unit and the litter pick enabled them to complete the community action clause of their latest Challenge badges. “It takes 12 months to complete each badge and the girls decided they wanted to finish this year’s set of challenges by doing something to both mark the Queen’s 90th birthday and to help make our local park better for everyone,” explained Guide Leader Claire Sharman. The Guides, aged from 10 to 14, were assisted by John Tattersfield, from Ashfield District Council, who provided the equipment and identified the spots most in need of the girls’ attention.

Peter Gundel won £22,896 and Steven Hughes £22,896, while other prizewinners received from around £1,000 to more than £15,000 at a presentation event at Fisher Lane Park, Mansfield. A KING’S Mill Hospital staff nurse raised around £2,000 for the Sutton hospital’s dedicated stroke unit by stepping into the ring for a charity boxing match. Ben ‘Buster’ Griffiths, who works on the stroke unit, strapped on his gloves as part of a national White Collar match at Alfreton Leisure Centre. White Collar Boxing allows men and women in white collar professions to be trained by world-class coaches to fight at special events to give them the chance to experience the sport. Ben, who faced a bantamweight champion in three, three-minute rounds, said: “As a member of the stroke team I felt that this was a fantastic opportunity to support our excellent service. “We strive to provide our patients the best possible care. We see on a day-today basis the devastating effects that strokes have on patients and relatives. “The money I raise will go towards improving dayroom facilities, aiming to provide patients a more comfortable experience whilst with us on the ward.” People can still sponsor Ben by donating at http://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Ben-Griffiths14
