Introduction A mental disorder or mental illness affects a quarter of people around the world during their lives but many will neither seek nor receive help, according to the World Health Organisation. It is stated that one million people commit suicide every year and that around ten to twenty million people attempt to take their own lives. Around the world 450 million people suffer from a range of conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar or dementia but still only half of all countries have just one psychiatrist per 100,00 people. A shocking four out of ten countries have in place no mental health policy at all. In the United Kingdom under the National Health Service and Community Care Act in 1990, people with mental health problems were able to remain in their own homes whilst undergoing treatment. This meant that the majority of psychiatric hospitals were in turn shut down. This book takes you on a journey through a series of eight abandoned buildings. All of the images were taken using film and were shot using both a Lomography LC-A or a Miniature Diana Camera.
