The studio was founded in 2010 by two classmates, Ondřej Chybík and Michal Krištof. These two young architects have succeeded in forming a studio consisting of 50 associate architects. The studio boasts a large number of completed and on-going projects on which they work with a sense for local context within a global perspective. In 2016, they opened two new offices in Prague and Bratislava and they are still looking for new opportunities abroad.

Ondřej Chybík (* 1985, Brno, Czech Republic) studied architecture and urban design in Brno, in Graz and at ETH Zurich. He was also awarded the Rector’s Award from BUT in Brno. After completing his studies, he worked at Vienna’s PPAG studio. His work was exhibited at the NY MoMA as part of the Uneven Growth exhibition. In 2015 Forbes included him in its “30 under 30” list.

Michal Krištof (* 1986, Martin, Slovakia) studied architecture and urban design in Brno and Ghent and was also awarded the Rector’s Award from Brno University of Technology in Brno. After graduation he worked at Bjarke Ingels Group ‘BIG’ in Copenhagen. In 2016 Forbes included him in its “30 under 30” list.

Our team is composed of approximately 50 architects who see the world from the contemporary global perspective and who can rely on the trust of large domestic investors. Only with their help can we bring to life brand new architectural and urban planning concepts.

We provide a full spectrum of multidisciplinary services. Whether we are masterplanning a city or designing a small temporary pavilion, our philosophy remains the same: innovate, add value and collaborate. The aim of our office is the creation and supply of all phases of project documentation.

Our goal is to design unique projects and to realise them at the proper level of quality. We put together a specific team of professionals for every project.

We collaborate with the best engineers and specialists such as AED project, K4 or ARUP.

Over the last years, we have bulit strong relationships with our local or international clients inculidng Czech Forestry, KOMA Modular, Lahofer Winery, The Moravian Gallery in Brno, furniture manufacturer MY DVA, Forbes Slovakia and Czech Republic, numerous developer groups such as Penta Investments, Skanska, Central Group, Gemo, Arkon, Karlin Group and several private clients of family villas.

The first thing we do is create a strong multidisciplinary team for each project. Also, we believe that professional discussion with civil engineers, specialists in the field of energy efficiency, landscape architects, interior designers, and experts in users’ sociological composition should start as early as the first design stage, and the project’s subsequent development should reflect the conclusions of these discussions. These people work on and develop the proposal with due professional care and diligence.

We do not provide or advocate generic solutions. Instead, we always strive to propose a unique, innovative, sustainable, and site- and client-specific project.

Research Our internal research team takes several weeks to investigate existing approaches to the specific issue before the studio actually commences work. The aim is to become familiar with the relevant issues and how these issues have developed.

After visiting and investigating the site, our internal team of architects goes on to consider as many alternative approaches as possible. We usually create dozens of approaches during the first stage. Such testing provides us with accurate knowledge of the site, the local context

Natural resources should be used efficiently. We collaborate with energy specialists to ensure that heating and cooling systems are designed in the most sustainable way. This smart technology makes it possible to respond to temperature and humidity changes in the buildings and public spaces in real time, thanks to which our solutions offer optimal living conditions.

Urban spaces We love living in the city. Our urban designs are based on our fundamental experiences of urban living all around the world. We know how to design a new main square and we enjoy designing new pedestrian streets full of shops and cafés. We understand the city as an organism. We know how to provide it with efficient urban acupuncture, and we have the right tools to make it healthier: well-proportioned public spaces oriented towards the sun, public amenities, and the right proportions of the neighbouring buildings. The result is a city where one can safely walk and shop, spend time with friends or even find love.

Public and sports facilities Our designs consider public amenities and sports as a necessary part of each housing project. We are convinced that a balanced number of such facilities will promote quality of life in the area.

We always make sure to create attractive places where people can meet friends and neighbours, do some shopping, educate children or engage in many different sports activities around the housing estate. Another important feature is communal spaces, which play an important role in the design of each housing development. These spaces have different forms and functions

such as shared meeting rooms, small libraries for children or rooms for listening to music. These spaces help new residents to create a new community. We always take extra care to create an environment in which new relationships can be formed. This is because we believe that strong relationships positively affect not only the safety of the area but also the condition of common spaces such as park areas and semiprivate gardens. And this goes hand in hand with better social life in the area.

It is our conviction that the anonymous “all the same” boxes are a thing of the past and that contemporary design needs to be more complex, taking into consideration the needs of the clients more than ever before. If we make efficient use of nature, we can often avoid technologically demanding solutions. In cooperation with landscape designers we have found and articulated those qualities of the ecosystem that have a great potential to create an optimal climate for an office building. A natural cooling system can substantially reduce temperatures during the summer.

In addition, it makes the air around the building fresher and helps the building to breathe naturally. Biodiversity in the landscape creates attractive green areas where people can relax on a busy working day. Thanks to the natural character of the landscape employees can enjoy the building with all their senses including the smell of fresh air.

According to multiple studies, the quality of the working environment has a huge impact on employee productivity, and thus also on the company’s profits. It has been proven that every innovation starts with meeting and collaboration between people.

We created a central space for the whole firm, a central atrium which interconnects all floors and all employees. This space encourages collaboration between employees, random meetings and innovation.

“The Waltrovka project offers affordable compact housing with the quality of a semi-private garden and connection to the public spaces” Resident-friendly affordable housing What is significant for our building is a simple typology in the form of balconies, terraces and windows on the facade. For each unit we designed sheltered parking places and cellar spaces; the green roof on the first floor provides a quiet garden in the inner courtyard of the building and is open only to its residents. Nevertheless, these flats offer affordable and the most economic housing. They represent perfect living in close proximity to a central square and metro station.

Housing and its environment We consider every apartment to be more than just four walls, a floor and a ceiling. Naturally, it’s a place where the most private interaction within a family happens.

While it is true that interior layout is essential, this does not mean we can ignore the surrounding areas.

We take many different aspects into consideration in our housing designs. These are the safety of the neighbourhood, sustainability of the private, semiprivate, semi-public and public spaces, and the project’s connectivity to its surroundings. We enjoy preparing designs in which these spaces are built adjacent to each other. We call this an urban gradient.

We believe that in this way we can prevent conflicts in the area and eliminate physical borders such as walls and fences.

Forming public space With each of our projects we try to improve the quality of life in the city. We believe that buildings shouldn’t have a rear, since they are surrounded on all sides by public space. We carefully design every ground floor of our projects to bring shared benefits for both the building and the public.

Spatial architecture We believe luxury is primarily defined by space rather than by fancy materials or solutions such as golden toilets.

Therefore, we carefully consider the spatial needs of each room in our luxury villas. We are convinced that the ability to read context should complement our passion to fulfill the client’s demands, and that spatial concepts should combine these two parameters. The set of main rooms with spatial extenstions always remains identical, and the living room, dining room and salon form the core of the spatial concept. Placemaking The new winery building is nestled amidst the scattered vineyards of the scenic South Moravian countryside. The structural design is based on the width of a row of grapevines and runs through the whole building. In the public wine-tasting room, the vineyard and an arched space symbolizing the region’s wine cellars intersect orthogonally. The winemaking activities are concentrated in two horizontal buildings; the winery thus makes a lightweight impression in relation to the countryside.

A waste disposal centre as an essential part of the community The aim of the project is to transform an unattractive waste disposal centre into a destination site that will become one of the symbols of the town and the region. Currently, waste disposal centres are generally seen as “grey areas” on city maps,

a view that our project strives to overcome by offering a building whose function and form will draw the general public’s attention and make it a significant part of the community and its public facilities.

Education as a necessary part of the waste management process

The building uses only recycled materials presently used in the construction process, and the design aims to create a paradigm of how these materials can be employed in real life.

This approach gives rise to a building which aspires to become a showroom of recycled materials. In addition, the building is designed to serve as a laboratory in which these materials and their combinations are tested in real life. It will be interesting to observe how these materials age and how the building

We believe that educating the public plays a pivotal part in a sustainable approach to the reuse of materials. Therefore, we have designed a waste disposal centre which, aside from fulfilling its primary function of collecting and sorting waste, also serves as an educational gallery of waste. The gallery provides the public of all ages with an opportunity to discover

transforms during its projected lifespan. In the future, the inner boxes inserted into the concrete superstructure can easily be changed or substituted by newly developed recycled materials, thus providing engineers and architects an opportunity to test these materials in real life as well. The reconditioned furniture seeks to demonstrate that the interior can take on a contemporary look even if older equipment is used.

The first section consists of an educational loop, while the second one is a shop where reusable objects may be purchased. Finally, the third section is the waste management centre as such, with storage areas for the various types of waste.

Healing benefits Can a hospital be more than a place of white coats?

Yes, we believe it can. We adhered to the main client’s demand for creating a pleasant space with a positive impact on its employees, patients and visitors.

We would like to find the balance between the effective provision of health care and a cultivated place.

Emphasis is put on greenery - there are vines growing on the facades, patients can access the smaller gardens around each hospital room and, moreover, the entire building is surrounded by a park. The building is accessible from various directions, does not create any barriers, and enables the use of its parterre as a public space.

Modernizing an existing station City infrastructure 2.0 Our cities as we know them work around specific important hubs. Train stations and bus stations are some of those points.

In our office, we are highly interested in designing these dynamic public spaces not as barriers or places where you don’t want to be, but as new pleasant plazas offering diverse urban life.

We anticipate a full modernization, with a focus on increasing the functionality, clarity and aesthetic unification of the bus station and its premises. The new design is based on the station’s two most characteristic features, the platforms and roof construction.

We would love to give Zvonařka back its prominence and the majesty of a representative public space.

Czech Architecture Award and Architecture Grand Prix, 2017

Our studio has been awarded a number of distinctions since its inception. Last year the office was awarded in both main Czech architecture contests. We were a finalist for the Czech Architecture Award 2017 - the annual contest of the Czech Chamber of Architects.

The same year we won the National Architecture Award, the Architecture Grand Prix 2017. Both prizes were awarded for realization of the Gallery of Furniture.

In 2015 we received a bronze medal for our design of the Czech National Pavilion at Expo Milan. Additionally, we received an honorable mention in the Top Ideas Competition in Shenzhen, China, in 2015. More recently, we won first prize in an international competition for a project for the Czech Forestry Commission.

Both of our copmany’s leading architects, Ondrej Chybik and Michal Kristof, were selected by Forbes magazine as members of the prestigious 30 under 30 club, a list of exceptionally talented young people under the age of 30.

Our work has been recognized globally by prestigious architecture magazines such as A10 and MARK (Netherlands) and Concept (Korea), and published in some of the most prestigious online media such as Dezeen and ArchDaily. We regularly give lectures at universities (e.g. Cornel University, US) and during events such as Pecha Kucha Night in Hong Kong.
