By the goodness we strive to achieve, and by which we promise to live, God renews time. May this hope-filled spirit guide us all as we greet a New Year seeking purpose, contentment, and renewal.

At Chizuk Amuno Congregation we provide a variety of settings for observing Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. As you make your plans to join with us, please consult the information in this brochure.

Selihot: An Evening of Conversation, and Preparation Saturday, September 24 Join with our community to prepare for Rosh HaShanah & Yom Kippur.

8:15 p.m. Havdalah

We gather to enjoy the sweetness and light of Havdalah following the conclusion of Shabbat.

We will read and recite the prayers and reflections of our Selihot Service that evening from Mahzor Lev Shalem. During the Selihot Service we are introduced to some of the prayers and motifs of the coming Days of Awe. We conclude our evening with the sounding of the Shofar.

The Selihot Service is an emotional, spiritual, and evocative evening of teshuvah, repentance, reflecting upon our deeds and experiences this year as we consider personal and religious goals for future growth and change.

Dessert Reception

In friendship and conversation, we’ll join to renew our bonds as a synagogue community before the first “formal” service of the High Holy Day season. Join with our rabbis and your synagogue friends for discussion about how to find personal meaning and spiritual feelings during the High Holy Days.

Chizuk Amuno Family Selihot Service: Stepping into the High Holidays

9 p.m. Selihot Service

Sunday, September 25

Before our service begins, the Torah Scrolls in the ark are publicly changed into their white High Holy Day covers which symbolize the freshness and purity of the coming New Year.

A String Quartet will accompany Hazzan Perlman and the Chizuk Amuno choir during our Selihot Service. Selihot is a unique and moving late night “Service of forgiveness” that begins the High Holy Day season.

During the service, grateful for our new prayer books, Siddur Lev Shalem and Mahzor Lev Shalem, our rabbis will reflect on this question: “What will be new about my prayer during this sacred season?”

11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Prepare for the New Year, participate in our community shofar blast, and join your friends and the synagogue clergy for an interactive family friendly experience. We will dress the Torah Scrolls in their white covers, share our personal prayers, and sing those songs which mark this important time of year. As we come together, we will all grow in our awareness of these very special days and enjoy some holiday sweets!

High Holy Day Service Descriptions

Sanctuary Service

Rabbi Ronald J. Shulman Hazzan Emanuel Perlman Worship is formal in style, providing an inspiring and evocative setting for personal prayer and reflection. The Chizuk Amuno Choir complements the service. English readings and reflections, as well as a sermon and teachings are interspersed throughout the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

Krieger Auditorium Service

Rabbi Deborah Wechsler Dr. Larry Amsterdam, Ba’al Tefilah Worship is formal in style, providing a warm and participatory setting for personal prayer and reflection. English readings and reflections and a sermon are interspersed throughout the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

Stulman Auditorium Service Rabbi Paul Schneider Dr. David Roffman, Ba’al Tefilah

Worship is less formal in style and somewhat abbreviated, providing an intimate and participatory setting. Stories, anecdotes, and readings are interspersed throughout the service to enrich and inform each person’s experience.

Important High Holy Day Seating Information n Your seats for the First Day of Rosh HaShanah as well as on Yom Kippur eve and morning will remain in the same location as last year. However, subject to the availability of seats in different locations, you have the option of moving to different seats or a different worship service. n On the Second Day of Rosh HaShanah all the members of our synagogue family, gather together in the Sanctuary to celebrate and worship.

Though seating in the Sanctuary will be open, all congregation members who wish may reserve seats for this communal Second Day service in advance. n Reserved seats not occupied by 10:30 a.m. will become available for general seating. n Elderly and disabled members who require special assistance for

their comfort in the Sanctuary are able to reserve their seats for the entire Second Day service. Hosts

& Relatives We are delighted to welcome into the Sanctuary, Krieger and Stulman Auditorium services your family’s children, high school and college students as well as relatives who may be visiting with you during the High Holy Days. Suggested donation for these extra seats, as available, range from $100 to $250. Please contact Judy Simkin.

Each year we delight in how many of our synagogue members share in the honors of Opening the Ark, coming up to the Torah, and participating in the ritual of our High Holy Day Services. In the Sanctuary and Krieger Auditorium service honors invitations are extended each year in continuing alphabetical rotation. We invite honorees for this year starting from where in the alphabet we left off last year. Through this rotation, over the course of a few years everyone receives the opportunity to come forward to participate.

Higher & Higher - Shofar Ceremony

Sunday, October 2 We invite you and your children to bring your own Shofarot and join at 5:45 p.m. in the synagogue courtyard. We will welcome the New Year with a special Shofar Ceremony including song and discovery before Erev Rosh HaShanah Services. One purpose of sounding the Shofar is to announce the arrival of sacred time. Another purpose is to elevate our mood as we begin the New Year. Together we will prepare to greet the New Year about to begin, and sound our many Shofarot to announce the arrival of 5777 in our synagogue community before entering the sanctuary.

Minhah: Afternoon Service

Hoffberger Chapel Ma’ariv: Evening Service We will usher in the New Year together in the Sanctuary.

Rosh HaShanah, Second Day ~ Aliyot

On the Second Day of Rosh HaShanah when our worship service embraces all of us as one synagogue community, we honor members of our congregation for their life experiences in the recent past.

• We recognize friends in our synagogue community who have experienced healing in the year gone by, coming through a time of illness, surgery, or personal distress.

• We recognize friends in our congregation who have been blessed with the birth of children or grandchildren in the past year.

• We recognize our younger synagogue members who recently became Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

• We recognize those in our synagogue family who were married or who celebrated their children’s and grandchildren’s weddings last year.

• We recognize our elders, dear friends and relatives to us all, who are 90 years of age or older.

During our Second Day Rosh HaShanah Torah service, we invite these individuals to come up for an Aliyah, joining with others who share in these particular experiences from last year. We hope that this shared Aliyah is a meaningful way to express feelings and gratitude at this sacred time of year.

Yom Kippur Food Drive

Tuesday-Tuesday, October 4 -11 In the Haftarah for Yom Kippur, the prophet Isaiah implores Jews to fast not just by refraining from food, but by taking meaningful social action. The words of the prophet are as urgent now as when they were originally written.

As you reflect on the past year and on the one that is nearing, consider putting Isaiah’s message of social responsibility into action by making a contribution of non-perishable food items to the bins in the lobbies.

In the tradition of our ancestors, we gather inside the hallowed gates of our congregation’s cemeteries to recite psalms, prayers, and personal memorials during the Days of Repentance between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Services are conducted by Rabbi Ron Shulman, Rabbi Debi Wechsler, and Hazzan Emanuel Perlman, accompanied at Arlington Cemetery by voices of the Chizuk Amuno Choir.

Yom Kippur Study Sessions: “Our God and God of Our Ancestors” 2:30 p.m. In the quiet of Yom Kippur afternoon we have the opportunity to reflect together and discuss questions of faith and doubt, Jewish and personal beliefs. These shared and spiritual discussions enhance the mood and meaning of our observance. We invite you to take advantage of the reflective mood on Yom Kippur afternoon and think about “Our God and God of Our Ancestors.”

Ask the Rabbi

3:30 p.m. Each year on Yom Kippur afternoon we meet in the sanctuary for a question and answer session with Rabbi Shulman.

Participants ask about theology, Jewish tradition and customs, current events, and any other pertinent questions they want to ask the rabbi.

For some it’s try to stump the rabbi! It’s a fun and insightful hour to which everyone is invited.
