The office of the Chamber of Commerce occupies the city’s oldest brick building and is located at 52 E. Walworth Avenue. Built in 1841, over the years this building has been a general store, post office, residence and an art museum. Delavan Lake is regarded as one of the finest boating and fishing lakes in the state (Lake Comus and Congdon Pond also have their fans). Large muskellunge, northern pike, large- and smallmouth bass, walleye and panfish are regularly caught.
A lake for all seasons, Delavan Lake has it all — fishing, sailing, canoeing, swimming, water-skiing, para-sailing, ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
The Town of Delavan operates the lakeside Community Park (located on the corner of Hwy. 50 and South Shore Drive), featuring picnic areas, a swimming beach, a boat launch and fishing area, along with the newly renovated Waters Edge banquet/ wedding/meeting facility. Special community-wide events are regularly scheduled throughout downtown Delavan and at Community Park in the Town of Delavan as well. Visit townofdelavan.com.
The Delavan and Delavan Lake area is one of the most popular resort locations in Wisconsin with exciting water sports, golf, outdoor special events and seasonal activities. Delavan’s park system contains more than 100 acres of beautifully maintained natural preserves, parks, picnic areas, athletic fields and playgrounds. Delavan’s robust park system offers a swimming pond (staffed by lifeguards), sledding hill, botanical garden, bandshell and memorial arboretum. Discover over two miles of winding waterways
and nature trails that pass through picturesque parks. Town of Delavan Community Park is also a popular recreation and event site.
Congdon Gardens was established through the Delavan-Darien Rotary Club, and can be discovered while strolling the nearly one-mile loop around the pond, or by sitting peacefully on a park bench. You will appreciate beautiful displays of plantings for all seasons, amazing monuments and memorials. You can even get married here!

Delavan sits in the middle of what was at one time an inland sea. During the Ice Age, many glaciers covered this area. One glacier, known as the Michigan tongue, descended down what is now known as Lake Michigan. A large section of this glacier broke off, pushing southwest into the area now known as Walworth County.
The area that would become Walworth County was divided into five towns by act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in 1838, with Delavan occupying the county’s southwest corner. The region grew steadily around the settlements that are now the Villages of Darien, Fontana, Sharon and Walworth, and the City of Delavan. Delavan’s first settlers were Henry Phoenix and Col. Samuel F. Phoenix, two men of strong principles who sought to start a community pledged to temperance, sobriety and faith. Incorporated as a city in 1897, Delavan presently boasts a population of over 8,500, with an additional 5,300 residing in the Town of Delavan.

Delavan, as one of Wisconsin’s earliest communities, has some notable architectural sites. Buildings in the 19th century Victorian styles are located throughout the older neighborhoods of the city. Just east of the Delavan Chamber of Commerce office is a set of Greek Revival-style row houses built between 1841
and 1845. The Allyn Mansion stands east of the city center, at 511 E. Walworth Ave. Designed by E. Townsend Mix and built in 1885, this building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby, at 533 E. Walworth, stands the Queen Anne-style Latimer House built in 1900. Several homes by Frank Lloyd Wright stand on the shores of Delavan Lake as well.
Delavan has played a key part in the history of the American circus. In 1847, Edmund and Jeremiah Mabie, proprietors of the U.S. Olympic Circus (which was then the largest traveling show in America), chose Delavan for their winter quarters. This was a year before Wisconsin attained statehood and 24 years before the more famous Ringling Brothers raised their first tents in nearby Baraboo, Wisconsin.
The Mabie brothers chose Delavan for its ability to support the circus horses and other animals.
The animals were the most important assets of a 19th century circus, both for transportation and performance. Mabie Circus occupied the site that is now Lake Lawn Resort on Delavan Lake. The Circus heritage survived for the next 100 years. From 1847 to 1894, more than 25 circuses with clowns and performers held their winter quarters in Delavan.
The P.T. Barnum Circus, “The Greatest Show on Earth,” was founded in Delavan in 1871. More than 250 members of the old circus colony are buried in Spring Grove and St. Andrew Cemeteries. In 1966, the U.S. Postal Service recognized Delavan’s circus heritage with a Commemorative Stamp.

Delavan has a wide range of retail establishments. The historic downtown features antique and collectible shops, clothing, specialty and jewelry stores. The east end of Delavan has several shopping plazas with a variety of shopping including national chain stores (Fleet Farm, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, PetSmart, Walgreens and Walmart, etc.). Delavan offers a wide variety of recreational and tourism opportunities for all ages and interests, including two great golf courses. Delbrook Golf Course (27 holes) is operated by the City of Delavan and is one of the oldest courses in the state. Majestic Oaks Golf Course (18 holes) is located at Lake Lawn Resort and was redesigned by renowned architect Dick Nugent. Whether you have planned a group golf trip or a weekend getaway that naturally includes your clubs, we invite you to be challenged by as many rounds as you can!
Access to health care is a priority in Delavan. Dean Medical Clinic, Aurora Heath Center and Mercy Delavan Medical Center are all located here, with specialists in such fields as internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology and surgery. A Mayor and six Aldermen comprise the Common Council that governs the City of Delavan. The implementation of policies, directives and daily operation supervision is the responsibility the City Administrator. Delavan’s Municipal building, 123 S.
